By City News ServiceFederal officials Tuesday announced $159 million in funding for a trio of Southern California water-resiliency projects, including nearly $100 million for an underdevelopment water-recycling facility in Carson.
Sen. Alex Padilla, D-California, and Reps. Grace Napolitano and Nanette Barragán, both D-Los Angeles, made the announcement at the Carson facility that is named after Napolitano.
The Grace F. Napolitano Pure Water Southern California Innovation Center will receive $99.2 million of the funding announced Tuesday. Pure Water will take cleaned wastewater that is currently sent to the ocean and purify it to produce high-quality drinking water.
According to the Metropolitan Water District, which is overseeing the project

along with the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, Pure Water will produce up to 150 million gallons of water daily, enough to serve the demands of more than 500,000 homes, officials said.
Purified water from the
facility will be delivered through up to 60 miles of new pipe to the region's groundwater basins, industrial facilities and two of Metropolitan's water treatment plants.
"We know that it's only a matter of time until the next devastating drought, which is why we need every tool at our disposal to protect our region's precious water supplies," Padilla said in a

Construction set to begin on large mixed-use complex in ArcadiaBy Staff

Construction officially began Wednesday for a 319-unit mixed-use apartment complex in downtown Arcadia. Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Alexan Azalea, a massive residential development at 150 N. Santa Anita Ave. by Trammell Crow Residential.
Passengers are required to use a TAP card to pay the fare before boarding a bus or train. Beginning Tuesday, passengers exiting the Metro B (Red) Line train at the North Hollywood station are required to again tap the fare card to leave the station.
Metro officials described it as an effort to boost
The move is aimed at providing more assurance that people who are riding the trains paid the fare to board the line. Sheriff Robert Luna said in recent comments that the vast majority of people arrested or detained in connection with wrongdoing on the transit system had not paid the proper fare to board.
compliance with fare requirements, noting that people who do not pay the fare are subject to citation or removal from the system.
According to Metro, similar tap-to-exit programs are already in place on other systems, including Bay Area Rapid Transit, Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority and Metropolitan Atlanta Regional Transit Authority.
Tapping the TAP card upon exiting the station will confirm that valid fare was paid for the trip. People who did not pay the fare when they boarded the train will be charged when they tap to exit, but those people could still be cited or removed from the transit system for failing to pay up front.
"We have also increased the visible presence of our teams at North Hollywood
“Arcadia is fondly knowns as, ‘A Community of Homes,’ which is evident in the diverse array of housing types and styles available throughout our city,” Mayor April Verlato said in a statement. “We are incredibly proud of the housing options offered in Arcadia, and now, through the Alexan Azalea, we can offer more opportunities for people to call Arcadia home.”
The planned seven-story apartment building is near the city's Metro Gold Line station and will have 319 studio, oneand two-bedroom units each between 540 and 1,220 square feet situated above parking for over 551 vehicles, according to a city staff report. The new complex will have 26 units deemed "affordable housing" and eight "live-work" units.
"This mixed-use development not only provides highquality living space, but it will also serve as a dynamic hub where individuals can seamlessly integrate living, working and socializing," city spokeswoman Jackie Tran said in a statement. "As a transit-oriented development, located one block from the Metro station, this project strikes the perfect
‘The
Winter’s Tale’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ kick off Theatricum’s summer season

Celebrated for expansiveproductions by William Shakespeare that fill the outdoor stage and spill over into the surrounding hillside in Topanga, Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum opens its 2024 summer repertory season with two productions by the Bard. Opening first on Saturday, “The Winter’s Tale” is a sweeping romance of passion and forgiveness. The very next day, Sunday, marks the opening of Theatricum’s signature production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Containing one of Shakespeare’s most famous stage directions (“Exit, pursued by a bear”), “The Winter’s Tale” is a tragedy in its first third and a comic pastoral in its second, then finally resolves itself in romance. In a jealous rage, King Leontes falsely accuses his wife,

reunited, and old wounds are healed through the forgiving power of love.
“Out of a winter plagued by jealousy and torment emerges the glorious rebirth of spring in high

Hermione, of adultery with his best friend, King Polixenes. Their baby daughter, Perdita, cast out to die, is adopted by an old shepherd and secretly grows up in Polixenes’ kingdom as a shepherdess. When Polixenes discovers that his son has fallen in love with Perdita, he forbids their marriage and the lovers flee. Through the inadvertent help of a comic pickpocket, a clown and two shepherdesses, the lovers and their parents are
humor of the countryside,” says Theatricum artistic director Ellen Geer, who directs. “One of the Bard’s final plays,’The Winter’s Tale’ concludes in one of the most extraordinarily written scenes of magical redemption, in which Time ensures that the past is only a prologue to the reconciled future.”
“A Midsummer Night’s Dream” opens the very next day with a Sunday matinee. Theatricum audiences insist
on its return every summer. Once again, the venue’s wooded stage will morph into the enchanted woods of Athens, where mortal lovers chase and are chased, players prepare, and fairies make magical mischief.
This year, associate artistic director Willow Geer directs.
“I’ve had the privilege of being a part of this glorious play for decades,” she says.
“As I age and grow and experience so many different types of love and relationships, I am constantly in awe of the timelessness of Shakespeare and his unwavering ability to illuminate and explore the human heart so eloquently. In this year’s Dream, we endeavor to immerse the audience in the whimsical world of fairy enchantment, Greek mythology and mortal folly, inviting all to revel in and relate to the joyous tapestry of human connection woven throughout this delightful comedy.”
“The Winter’s Tale” opens on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and continues to run in repertory through Sept. 30; a prologue (pre-show) discussion will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” opens on Sunday at 3:30 p.m., with performances continuing through Sept. 23; a
prologue discussion is set for Thursday, Aug. 29 from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum is located at 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Topanga, midway between Malibu and the San Fernando Valley. (Topanga Canyon Boulevard is currently closed between the theater and PCH; until further notice, exit the 101 at Topanga Canyon Boulevard South to access Theatricum from the Valley.) The amphitheater is terraced into the hillside, so audience members are advised to dress casually (warmly for evenings) and bring cushions for bench seating. Patrons are welcome to arrive early to picnic in the gardens before a performance.
Tickets to performances range from $15 to $48. Premium seating is available for $60. Children 4 and under are free. Pay What You Will ticket pricing is available on the following dates: The Winter’s Tale on Friday, July 19 and Monday, Sept. 30 at 7:30 p.m.; and A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Monday, Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. (available online the week of the performance or cash at the door). Man shoots, kills self on freeway after Corona-to-OC police chase
By Staff
Aman shot himself to death on the Riverside (91) Freeway after leading police on a pursuit from Corona to Anaheim Hills and barricading in his vehicle for several hours, the Corona Police Department reported Friday.
Police said the man — identified Tuesday as Efrain Quezada, 40, of La Puente — was sought for alleged stalking, criminal threats and violating a domestic violence restraining order.
The chase started around 8 a.m. Friday when Corona police attempted a traffic stop near McKinley Street and Griffin Way and the suspect drove away, according to Corona Police Department Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis.
After the California Highway Patrol joined the pursuit, the suspect stopped on the 91 Freeway near Lakeview Avenue in Anaheim Hills. Armored vehicles — one from Corona police at the rear end and another from the Anaheim
Police Department at the front, blocked the suspect's vehicle, Kouroubacalis said.
The ensuing four-hour standoff stymied trips for morning commute as the CHP shut down the freeway while crisis negotiators from the Corona PD spoke with the suspect on his cell phone. Negotiators had the man on the phone for over two hours in an attempt to convince him into surrendering without violence.
Just before noon, "the suspect stopped moving inside his vehicle, and he stopped communicating with us on his phone," Kouroubacalis said in a statement. "Our Special Response Team officers deployed light and sound diversion devices to the outside of his vehicle to gain his attention, but our officers did not see a reaction from him. Special Response Team members approached the vehicle and determined the suspect had a self-inflicted gunshot wound."
Police removed the suspect from the vehicle, and paramedics from the Corona and Anaheim fire departments determined he was dead.
Officers did not use deadly force during the standoff, police said.
The 8 a.m.-noon freeway shutdown resulted in a mileslong backup on both sides of the 91.
Video from the scene showed some commuters standing outside their cars on the freeway as they were stranded behind a swath of law enforcement vehicles.
The freeway barricade led to shelter-in-place orders at nearby Crescent Elementary School and Orange Pre-K that were lifted by the afternoon and all students were sent home, City News Service reported.
Corona police asked tipsters with information about this case to call Detective Steven Hungerford at 951-739-4858 or email him at Steven.Hungerford@ CoronaCA.gov.

Coalition presses lawmakers to put climate bond on CA November ballot
By Suzanne Potter, Producer, Public News Service
Ahuge coalition of 170 groups rallied in Sacramento on May 22, pressing lawmakers to put a climate bond measure on California's November ballot.
The bond measure would authorize the state to borrow $10 billion for projects to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Abraham Mendoza III, policy manager with the nonprofit Community Water Center in Sacramento, noted that California has suffered 46 extreme weather events - which each caused at least $1 billion in damage since 1980.
"We've had record wildfires in back-to-back years, followed by weather whiplash where we're seeing flooding in areas that previously had drought," said Mendoza.
"And we know that this isn't an anomaly. This is, unfortunately, the new reality and the future we need to prepare for."
Opponents cite concerns about increasing the state's debt during a time of budget deficits. Backers say a bond measure is necessary to protect the funding during tough budget years.
The Legislature is already considering two similar bills that would put the bond measure on the ballot.
If passed, the bond would be the largest voter-approved climate investment in U.S. history, and would send at least 40% to the most vulnerable communities.
Rosa Carrillo lives in a flood-prone farmworker housing community in Salinas. She said low-income
families need protection before big storms hit again.
"The past year when the rains came, the entrance for our little community was flooded," said Carrillo. "We had an elderly man that needed the ambulance, and the ambulance couldn't go in because the roads were closed."
The bond would fund projects to increase access to safe drinking water, promote renewable energy, restore wetlands, help farmers save water, and improve flood protection, increase wildfire resilience, and support air quality.
Lawmakers have until June 27 to pass a bill in order for the bond measure to qualify for the ballot.

As children, most people are told that if you work hard, it will pay off. Working hard is the key to success. This makes a lot of sense. Hard work should be the foundation for accomplishments. For each degree you earn or position you hold, you become more qualified. You are checking off more and more boxes that make you a better and better fit for a future role.
This theory works fairly well in fields such as computer programming. It is not uncommon for computer programmers to earn certifications and take courses, even beyond their degrees. The qualifications to be a computer programmer are more clear cut than in other fields, so it is fairly easy to distinguish who the most qualified candidate is. Unfortunately, there are many other fields where

this is not the case. This is true in marketing, for example, where candidate qualifications can vary widely for the same role. And, this is the same situation for executive level roles. These employees can find their path to success through many different roads, and different degrees.
When hiring, what's a company to do? Very often, the hiring manager is looking for what is known as a culture fit. Culture can become their number one priority. They have a good team in place, and they want someone who will get along well with that team. They want to keep things on track, and someone who fits culturally feels like the answer. Unfortunately, the desire to find a culture fit creates a few unforeseen consequences. Sometimes,
OPINION
Career corner: Fitting in
By Angela Copeland angela@copelandcoaching.comthe people who are the most likely to fit culturally are also very similar people. In other words, they may be similar in age. They could be the same gender or have the same religious views. They could be the same ethnicity. Or, they may have similar hobbies or children around the same age.
Have you ever noticed that an entire team of company leaders often has a lot in common with one another personally? It's more than being good at their jobs. They are also very similar people.
Unfortunately, this makes the bar much higher for interview candidates. Not only must they be qualified to do the job, but they must be like the other employees. And, if they are different, then they must be overqualified. In other words, there has to be a lot of extra perks to the person

in order to be selected. Don't get me wrong. It is important to get along with your team at work. Companies don't want to hire someone who is high conflict, and who may cause problems within the
company. But, there is a big difference between fitting in with everyone and being high conflict. There's a big difference in being able to do the work, and being just like everyone else.
We see Amazon trucks all day long. In case you didn’t get the reference, in this version, Amazon is the Philistine giant. I know I am not the only person who has a wee bit of an Amazon addiction. It’s just so darn easy. Ok, addiction was probably too strong of a word. I do try to shop in brick and mortar stores whenever possible. But sometimes you can’t find that certain something you might be looking for. For example, I bought a meat press to make your own, homemade deli meat. Have I used it yet? Nope. My point is, I haven’t seen one in a store. I shop at Home Depot for certain things, but that’s big business. And while Amazon is a threat to businesses of all sizes, the threat is not as dire for the
big guys.
Amazon is becoming the new “Monopoly”: super low, almost “predatory” pricing, “free” shipping, paid for by our Amazon Prime memberships. I’m not sure I can kick the Amazon habit, just yet. I can put whatever I want in the search bar and there it is, in my cart. With that being said, some things need to be seen and touched: fabric and especially books. I can buy a book online, no problem. But something comes over me in a bookstore that is magical. There is a process to touching the book and skimming the jacket. (RIP Vroman’s.)
Toys are the same way. Who didn’t love Toys “R” Us for its convenience? And that was not a small local business, but it is where we went for birthday presents,
Being aware of this potential pitfall will ensure you're hiring the most qualified candidates, not the most similar.
Monrovia Old Town report: David & Goliath
By Shawn Spencer shawn@girlfridaysolutions.netChristmas, strollers and everything else we needed for kids. Was it magical? Nope. Going into the Dollmaker’s Kattywompus was. It was impossible to not feel pure joy in that store. It was impossible to leave empty handed. Not only that, but the owners and staff made shopping there even better. Never once have I felt that at Toys “R” Us. I may be wrong, but I don’t feel like Kattywompus had a problem competing with Toys R Us, but Amazon is a whole different ballgame, though.
And while brick and mortar owners have tried to fight back, the counterpunches Amazon is throwing back are knocking them out left and right. So, like I said, I won’t give up my Amazon habit, but I will not give in to it either. I actively
shop locally just because I cannot stand watching our small businesses shutter their doors in defeat. I will not be bedazzled by the search bar. I prefer the personal relationships you create when you shop local — when a shop owner puts something aside until you come in because she knows you will love it, or when they know your name and ask after your family. That’s special. Amazon is just like “Hey this face that you put on your tree looks like you should buy it.” I bought it. What else is making small business so darn difficult? You guessed it! Rent. As we know, the price of everything has gone up. Everyone is dealing with inflation and high interest rates. The networking platform Alignable surveyed more than 4100
small businesses across the country. In April, 43% of the businesses surveyed could not pay their rent on time. The survey also showed that 68% of small businesses have fewer monthly earnings than they did preCOVID, and 54% said that their rents are higher now than they were six months ago. I don’t understand. Is it me? Is it all about profit? Why wouldn’t a landlord want a business to stay long term? If they are pricing their rents so high that a business can’t afford to stay, then what good does that do them? I’m not suggesting they underprice, but good grief. It feels like price gouging to me. I know. The costs have gone up for the property owner too: insurance, taxes, etc. I do not pretend to have the

answers. I just know that there needs to be some sort of regulation. Our legislators need to do a better job creating legislation to curb monopolies and other bad business practices. Without our small businesses, Monrovia would not be the same. How many of you remember Monrovia in the ‘80s? I wasn’t even allowed to be in Monrovia then. A trip to Monrovia got me grounded for a week. If I could capture it on video and play it at the Friday Night Street Fair or at LOOK Cinema, y’all would trip over yourselves to support small businesses more. Monrovia is a wonderful city to live and work in and Old Town is the cherry on top that makes this place so special. We really need to do more to support our small business. Me included.

Monrovia utility billing gets back on track; phone system upgrade completes
By Staff
Monrovia'sutility billing system is back up and running after it was unable to generate bills since March, City Manager Dylan Feik announced Friday.
City staff has restored the data and network connections that were lost on March 17.
"At the moment, we are using the term 'data loss' as the general overview of what happened," Feik said in an email to Monrovia Weekly. "There are lots of granular details about what exactly happened and because we are not yet out of the woods, I want to be careful about sharing too much information publicly. This is especially true IF we need to seek all available remedies to ensure the City recovers all of our costs associated with the data loss."
Utility bills for March, April and May began being sent at weekly intervals on May 27.
"This effort will give residents time to see their new bills and make plans for payment, rather than receive all the bills at once," according to Feik's announcement.
City officials expect June bills to be delivered to customers at the end of the month and in early July.
Planned sewer- and waterrate increases have been postponed to become effective July 1.
"This will allow everyone, including the City, time to catch up on utility bill payments," Feik said.
Utility customers enrolled in the electronic fund transfer program will have automatic

EFT payments deducted from their bank accounts on the due date specified on their bill. Customers who want to discontinue their enrollment in the EFT program may email watercustomersvs@ ci.monrovia.ca.us or call 626-932-5517.
Phone issues repaired, upgraded Feik also announced the municipal government's phone system upgrade to fiber optic cable from the copper that experienced "an unusually high volume of phone issues due to a rainy winter season and an antiquated landline phone infrastructure."
Issues with calling the city's phone lines should be reported via email, pio@ ci.monrovia.ca.us.
Shy-but-sweet Noeli can sometimes find the world a bit overwhelming. Once she gets comfortable, though, it's obvious she is a very confident little lady. Noeli is seven years old, and tips the scale at twelve pounds. She's a bundle of fun in a pint-sized package! Noeli has been spending time in a foster home, and she has gotten great reports. She loves squeaky toys, balls (she hasn't learned yet how to fetch and bring it back), and tug toys too (she wins all the time). She was introduced to two dogs about her size and she was friendly and curious. After a few times of getting acquainted and familiarized with them, she has been over to their yard to enjoy some playdates. She might be a good companion to a dog at home. Noeli loves walks and can even go on jogs. If you’re looking for a snuggly sweetheart look no further than Noeli! The adoption fee for dogs is $150. All dog adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.
Blue (A462656)
Meet Blue, a strikingly handsome 5-year-old Siamese cat with mesmerizing blue eyes. He will surely capture your heart at first sight. Blue is a gentle soul who loves to bask in the sunlight, often found curled up in the coziest spots of the house, enjoying a peaceful nap. Blue loves interacting with his human friends, but it can take him a little bit of time to get to know them. His shyness can be quickly overcome with a tasty treat or two, so with a patience and time, he’ll be your BFF before you can blink. Blue will thrive best in a calm and loving environment where he can feel safe and secure. If you are looking for a loyal, loving, and beautiful companion, Blue is the perfect addition to your family! June is Adopt A Cat Month, and thanks to a generous donor, Blue and all other adult cats at Pasadena Humane can be adopted at no charge throughout the month! The normal adoption fee for cats is $100. All cat adoptions include spay or neuter, microchip, and age-appropriate vaccines.
The Alexan Azalea will center around a paseo that will connect pedestrians to the Metro station and additional features of downtown Arcadia, Tran said. It will also have an outdoor plaza between the existing eight-story commercial tower and the residential building, as well as a cafe within the commercial space.
Officials expect the complex to open in 2026. August 2025 was a previous estimate for construction to finish.
Additional information on real estate projects in Arcadia is at ArcadiaCA.gov/Projects.
Walk-in adoptions are available every day from 2:00 – 5:00. For those who prefer, adoption appointments are available daily from 10:30 – 1:30, and can be scheduled online. View photos of adoptable pets at pasadenahumane.org. New adopters will receive a complimentary health-and-wellness exam from VCA Animal Hospitals, as well as a goody bag filled with information about how to care for your pet. Pets may not be available for adoption and cannot be held for potential adopters by phone calls or email.

Pasadena Humane seeks pet models for 2025 calendar
By City News ServicePasadena Humane is about to begin a search for pet models to appear in its 2025 calendar as part of an annual contest, the shelter announced Tuesday.
Animal owners are encouraged to submit their pets' best photo for the contest, which opens for submissions on Saturday.
"Our annual calendar contest is one of our favorite fundraisers," Dia DuVernet, Pasadena Humane's president and CEO, said in a statement. "There are so many adorable pets and amazing photos. The best part is that it all benefits the pets in our care. It's truly a win/win."
Twelve pets will be selected to adorn the pages of the 2025 Pasadena Humane calendar, and the winners will be decided by popular vote, according to shelter officials.
Competition is expected to be fierce, as the 2024 contest featured 192 entries and the top vote-getter cat, Federer, received more than 7,000

votes, according to the shelter.
The 2025 calendar is sponsored by Petco Love, a national nonprofit dedicated to animal welfare.
"Our investment in Pasadena Humane is part of more than $15 (million) in investments recently announced by Petco Love to power local organizations across the country as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessarily euthanized," Petco Love president Susanne Kogut said. "Our local invest-
ments are only part of our strategy to empower animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us."
The calendar photo contest will be open for submissions and voting from Saturday through June 30. There is a $25 entry fee for each photo, and members of the public can cast votes for $1 per vote, according to the shelter.
Pet owners can enter their photos and vote online at pasadenahumane. org/25calendar.
UCLA academic workers strike over protest response
By City News ServiceArolling strike by unionized academic workers upset about the University of California's response to pro-Palestinian protests at various campuses came to UCLA Tuesday as part of the second wave of union walkouts.
Workers represented by United Auto Workers Local 4811 had already been striking at UC Santa Cruz in what the union called the first wave of planned walkouts. The second round of strikes began Tuesday at UCLA and UC Davis.
Early Tuesday morning, a small group of workers walked a picket line on the UCLA campus, and dozens more joined by midday, when they marched through the campus and held a rally near the large Bruin statue.
Caroline Luce, an
academic administrator and historian who chairs the communications committee of the University CouncilAmerican Federation of Teachers at UCLA, told the crowd the university "has failed us."
"Instead of protecting our rights to free speech and assembly, Chancellor (Gene) Block's administration has actively hindered them, rendering our students and our colleagues vulnerable to assault and arrest," she told the crowd.
Mary Osako, UCLA vice chancellor for strategic communications, issued a statement Tuesday saying, "Our talented students are getting ready for finals, and UCLA's focus is doing whatever we can to support them. They're paying tuition and fees to learn, and we're dismayed by deliberate outside disruptions that get in the way of that. Students want to hear their professors teach, not the piercing sounds of trumpets, drums and slogans being shouted right outside their classroom windows."
The union represents teaching assistants, readers, tutors, student researchers and academic researchers.
UAW Local 4811 is asking the UC schools to give amnesty to all academic employees and students who face arrest or disciplinary actions for protesting. The union wants the students to have guarantees of freedom of speech and political expression on campus and is asking for researchers to be able to opt out of funding sources tied to the Israeli Defense Force.
LA County offers summer tutoring program for grades 1-6
The county of Los AngelesTuesday announced its new tutoring program for young learners in grades 1-6 to help them with reading and math at select libraries.
Supervisor Janice Hahn, who spearheaded the Summer Stars tutoring program, said it was developed in response to requests from parents and caregivers. The program will be offered at 33 libraries, including 11 in Hahn's 4th District, such as Bell, Bell Gardens, Clifton M. Brakensiek, Cudahy, Hawaiian Gardens, Huntington Park, Leland R. Weaver, Los Nietos, Norwalk, Pico Rivera, and Sorensen.
The program began last week, and according to Hahn's office, more than 1,500 interest forms have been submitted so far.
"Summer tutoring can help prevent kids from falling behind and can set them up for success in the new school year, but tutoring can be expensive and out of reach for many families," Hahn said in a statement. "This new tutoring program we are launching this summer at our L.A. County libraries is completely free and is designed to meet a

need in our communities."
She added, "Our public libraries have always been important resources for families and young students, but this new program takes it to another level."
Participants in the Summer Stars tutoring program will select from two 4-week sessions in reading from June 18 through July 11 and math from July 16 to Aug. 8, with the option to complete both sessions. Participants will have a 30-minute tutoring appointment Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of each session during the 1:30-4:30 p.m. time block.
Water project
"We are immensely grateful for Supervisor Hahn's dedication and efforts in making in-person tutoring at our libraries a reality," L.A. County Library Director Skye Patrick said in a statement. "Her commitment to our children's education allows us to offer live, free in-person tutoring with credentialed tutors, helping students build essential skills for success."
Appointments are available on a first-come, firstserved basis, and space is limited.
Sign-up information for Summer Stars is available at LACountyLibrary.org/ summer-stars.
Protesters rally outside UC Irvine chancellor's home
By City News Service
Pro-Palestinian protesters rallied outside UC Irvine Chancellor Howard Gilman's house in University Hills on Memorial Day.
More than two dozen protesters attended the morning rally, some with graphic posters and others using megaphones spread the word: "Howard Gillman you won't rest until UCI divests."
The group was there from about 8 to 10 a.m. before voluntarily dispersing.
This latest protest comes after law enforcement cleared the UCI Palestine solidarity encampment and arrested several dozen protesters on May 15.
Prior to that, protesters occupied the lawn outside the Physical Sciences Lecture Hall for a little over two weeks to demand that UCI disclose any financial ties with Israel and divest from all companies that do business with Israel. Protesters also have called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
statement. "Today's announcement, made possible by Bipartisan Infrastructure Law investments in large-scale water recycling projects, will help us build a more reliable, more resilient water supply in Southern California."
The legislators also announced $30 million for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Groundwater Replenishment Project. Another $30 million is being directed to the city of Ventura for its VenturaWaterPure Program.
"Adequate, resilient and safe water supplies are fundamental to the health, economy and security of our communities," U.S. Bureau of Reclamation Commissioner M. Camille Calimlim Touton said in a statement. "Investment in water recycling and reuse are key to stretching limited water supplies, making systems more resilient to the effects of aridification in the American West.
"Water recycling is an innovative and cost-effective tool that can help make our water supplies more reliable, helping communities find new sources to meet their needs today, but most importantly to meet our needs in the future."
According to MWD, the federal funds announced Tuesday will advance design work and improvements to existing infrastructure needed for the Pure Water project. Construction is expected to begin as soon as 2026 and the first water could be delivered in 2032.
"Purified recycled water isn't just a new supply of water, it is a climate-resilient one," MWD Board Chair Adán Ortega Jr. said. "That is precisely what we need as climate change challenges us with increasingly dramatic swings in weather, when every drought seems to be worse than the one before. Having a dependable supply of water, unaffected by the weather, will provide our communities a critical source of reliability. We are immensely grateful to our federal partners for their support."

LA County Fair sees uptick in attendance in 2024
his year's Los Angeles County Fair saw an increase in attendance with an estimated 787,843 guests, up 8% percent from 2023, despite "perhaps the chilliest weather ever," fair officials said Tuesday.
The 95th Los Angeles County Fair ended its 16-day run Monday at Fairplex in Pomona. The annual event had long been held in September, but moved its dates to May in 2022 to avoid the high temperatures of late summer.
Organizers said the average temperature for this year's 16-day fair was 73 degrees, down from 86.4 degrees in September 2019. The fair was not held in 2020 or 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"Guests are now acclimated to us being a May fair and, despite the cool weather we had this year, they are coming early and staying late. The Fair continues to be a tradition for so many, and an exciting new outlet of fun for those who've never
been here before," Fairplex President and CEO Walter Marquez said in a statement.
"We trended toward higher attendance almost each day of the Fair," said John Landherr, chairman of the Los Angeles County Fair Association Board of Directors. "I think that is due to the fact that we are bringing in new programming targeted to all ages. At its heart, the Fair is a family-friendly event with a touch of the new."
Officials also released their annual tally of the food eaten at this year's fair.
Among the highlights:
-- Chicken Charlie reported 15 pallets of French fries, 5,000 ears of corn, 2,000 chicken kebabs, 10,000 drumsticks and 3,000 chicken sandwiches.
-- Midway Gourmet Dominic Palmieri used over 1 mile of sliced bacon for bacon-wrapped pork belly on a stick, 2 miles of sausage on a stick used for Big Daddy Corn Dogs and sausage sandwiches, 3 tons of sugar to make cotton candy and
By City News Servicelemonade, 1,000 pounds of grated parmesan cheese for roasted corn, 700 pounds of chopped garlic for garlic fries, and 200 gallons of BBQ sauce and hot sauce to sauce up turkey legs.
-- Tasti Chips celebrated its 50th anniversary by selling 25,000 pounds of potatoes for homemade chips.
-- The Fair's wine education program served more than 20,000 individual 1-oz. tastings of wine, featuring gold medal winners from the Los Angeles International Wine Competition.
Guests donated nearly 95,000 cans of non-perishable food on three Food Drive Thursdays, one-quarter more than 2023, officials said. Donations will go to Inland Valley Hope Partners, LA Regional Food Bank, God's Pantry and the Pomona Unified School District's Community Schools Initiative's food pantry.
Cal Poly Pomona's Huntley College of Agriculture provided more than 200

animals for the petting zoo and presented educational programming in the dairy, livestock and show barns. Officials said two cows, 19 sheep, 24 goats and nine pigs were born during the Fair.
This year's overall fair theme was "Stars, Stripes & Fun," celebrating the county's diverse communities.
The fair provided more than 70 rides, 29 games and
20 food concessions this year in a carnival conducted by Ray Cammack Shows, whose Read to Ride program for school-aged children afforded parents the opportunity to scan a QR code and have their children write book reports in exchange for a carnival ride.
This year's concert performances included Los Tucanes de Tijuana, War, TLC, Ramon Ayala, Nelly and
T.I., Dustin Lynch and The Outlaws.
The fair evolved from a commercial-industrial show first held along the Southern Pacific railroad siding in downtown Pomona in 1921. It proved so successful that the businessmen who produced it held the first Los Angeles County Fair in October 1922.
The 2025 Fair will return next May.

Safety on the transit system has been a major topic in recent weeks, with a series of attacks on bus drivers and violence involving passengers, including Monday's incident in which a woman allegedly attacked and robbed a Metro bus driver on Spring Street just south of Temple Street, the stabbing of a man on a Metro bus in the Lynwood

area, the recent shooting death of a bus passenger in Commerce and stabbing death of a woman on a B Line train between the North Hollywood and Studio City stations.
The Metro Board of Directors last week approved a pair of motions aimed at boosting safety on the transit system in response to a string of recent attacks involving drivers and passengers. The

motions approved by the Metro board include a call for immediate deployment of more law enforcement on the transit system and at stations, along with exploration of possible technological improvements that can be made on buses, trains and stations.

“The play is whip-smart and brilliantly funny,” says director Brian Shnipper. “I laughed out loud the entire time I was reading it. It’s as if an episode of The West Wing was co-written by Aaron Sorkin… and John Cleese! This isn’t a play about left versus right or conservatives versus liberals. It’s a play about America’s distrust of politicians and our need for them to be relatable — no matter what the cost.”
Stephen Rockwell, previously seen at ICT in “A Splintered Soul” and “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” stars as the tongue-tied Newley, a man easily written off as a lost cause.
