n Cinco de Mayo, the Hoover High School class of 1947 held its 70th reunion at Royal Oaks Manor in Duarte. State Senator Bob Margett hosted his classmates from his Glendale Alma Mater appropriately starting the afternoon with margaritas in honor of the date. Throughout the event, classmates reminisced about their school days (Margett even remembered the days when he had a full head of hair). Shirley Mae Ricketts (nee Dyson) recalled the major events of their senior year. Mindy Perkins (Margett’s daughter) put together a slide presentation of photos from the group’s senior annual, The Script. The group especially appreciated Perkins story of the song her Dad, the Senator taught her as a child. She and her father than joined in a duet singing “Give a cheer for the boys who brew the beer in the cellars of Old Hoover High.” That was not the only musical interlude of the day. Sam Nicholson and Clarke Masters lead the group in singing the school fight song to the tune of “On Wisconsin” and then the Alma Mater. As the old friends took their leave from each other it was hard to determine who enjoyed the afternoon more, Margett, his fellow Tornados (the school mascot) or his daughter or granddaughter, Alexis, Margett (whom he proudly introduced as a Olympic swimmer – for the next Olympics). Or perhaps, I enjoyed it most. Thank you Tornadoes for a 70th. I hope to see my own in a few decades, but I will cherish the memories of yours. I pray we will be able to enjoy the day as much as you enjoyed yours.
