Rep. Adam Schiff honors fallen LAPD Officer Nicholas Choung Lee

Survey on sales of tobacco & unhealthy products revealed Results of a new, statewide survey on nearly 7,400 businesses offering retail sales of tobacco were announced today by the California Department of Public Health in conjunction with city health department officials from Berkeley, Long Beach and Pasadena. The results were released during a March 5, 2014 press conference in Los Angeles to help kick-

On Thursday, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) spoke on the House floor to honor fallen LAPD Officer Nicholas Choung Lee, who served in the Hollywood Division: “We depend upon the bravery and dedication of police officers every moment of every day, and we often forget the dangers and challenges they face on our behalf. I ask all members to join me in expressing our condolences to the Lee Family and LAPD.” “Mr. Speaker, I rise today to honor the memory

of Nicholas Choung Lee, a Los Angeles police officer who selflessly served his community. “Nicholas served for years in the LAPD, first in the Van Nuys Division, and later in the Hollywood Division, where he was assigned to a patrol car. He had worked as both a Field Training Officer and Vice Officer in Wilshire, before returning to patrol in the Hollywood Division in 2008. In his 16 years of service, he received more than 70 commendations. “But even as a police officer, family came first for

Nicholas, who had a wife, Cathy, and two young daughters, Jalen and Kendall. “Tragically, and much too soon, Nicholas passed away on April 6 when a truck hit his patrol car in Beverly Hills. “We depend upon the bravery and dedication of police officers every moment of every day, and we often forget the dangers and challenges they face on our behalf. I ask all members to join me in expressing our condolences to the Lee Family and LAPD.”

Mardi Gras 2014 breaks records in funds raised, attendance With an all-time high of 875 in attendance, Methodist Hospital’s 19th annual Mardi Gras also raised a recordbreaking $144,000 to benefit the hospital’s important cancer program. This year’s event was the most profitable ever, with 37 of the area’s top restaurants providing delicious fare at Sirona’s in beautiful Santa Anita Park on March 4. Restaurants included Benihana, Celestino’s Ristorante & Bar, Hai Di Lao Hotpot, Green Street Restaurant, La Luna Negra, Matt Denny’s, Sena on Myrtle and Toro Sushi and Bar, just to name a few. California 1980s tribute band The 80z All Stars, provided lively music for dancing and entertainment. The annual Mardi Gras parade featured the King of Mardi

Gras, former Methodist Hospital chief of staff and foundation board member Dr. James Lin. Methodist Hospital President and CEO Dan Ausman recognized Dr. Lin for his longtime support of Methodist Hospital and the outstanding clinical care he has provided to thousands of patients. Also, a special commendation was presented by a representative of Supervisor Michael Antonovich. “I feel extremely honored, and I want to continue helping the foundation raise funds for the cancer program, which is one of the clinical areas the hospital strives diligently to expand and strengthen,” Dr. Lin said. “It’s important that we remain competitive and on the cutting edge, and Mardi

Gras helps us do just that.” Other fun activities of the night included a silent auction and a raffle. Winner of the $1,000 drawing was Robert Bray, a Methodist Hospital employee. Much of the huge success of the event can be attributed to Mardi Gras co-chairs Sherry Wang, Methodist Hospital Foundation board member and twotime chair; longtime hospital supporter Patty Soldo, who also chaired for the second time; and four-time chair/cochair Lindburgh McPherson. Of course, the co-chairs depended heavily on the hard work of their volunteer committee as well. Foundation President Michael Driebe thanked the co-chairs and presented special tokens of appreciation.

Spring is coming and so are the poppies By Greg Aragon Each year they invade by the millions, painting portions of the California landscape with a bouquet a brilliant of colors. They are welcome visitors, sprouting up along freeways and covering rolling hills. They are wildflowers and spring is their invite. The most famous of these flowers is the California Poppy (Eschscholtzia californica), which blooms in deep orange, yellow, white, or variegated, and features four to eight pedals. Named state flower in 1903, the poppy once flourished throughout the state but today the only large fields left are found in the western Antelope Valley. One of the best places in Southern California to view poppies and other wildflowers is the Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve in Lancaster. This 1800-acre state reserve offers eight miles of intertwining hiking trails (including

a paved section for wheelchairs) winding through rolling hills covered with vibrant flora and beautiful desert vegetation. The park is located off lonely Highway 138 near Gorman, a meandering, two-lane country road that passes large grassy fields, hidden homes, vineyards, old water towers, and farms with horses and tractors. When I visited the park earlier this month, I found the hills speckled with green flowers and a few small poppies. The reserve says thanks to the recent storm that brought 3.5 inches of rain, there should be lots of new plants coming in the next few weeks. “This could be another ‘March Miracle’ year but there’s no guarantee how long it will last,” says the park’s website. On my previous visit to the park, I encountered a collection of colorful wildflowers, including Owl’s clover, lupine, goldfields, cream cups, coreopsis, and of course poppies. I also got a great workout walking the trails. Besides wildflowers,

the hills are spotted with Joshua trees, blooming with soft white artichokeshaped flowers; sage brush and red broom. Animals in the reserve include gliding hawks, singing meadow larks, side-blotched lizards, garden snakes and rattlesnakes. If you’re lucky, you may spot a coyote or bobcat. The complex also invites guests to the Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive Center, where they can watch a short video on wildflowers, view wildlife and plant displays, and visit the gift shop. The center is open weekends from 9am - 5pm beginning March 22nd, and then daily through April. Next to the facility there are benches that are perfect for a picnic in the poppy fields. Although this year hasn’t been the best for poppy viewing so far, there are still enough blooming to make for an enjoyable visit. But this year’s display of owl’s clover, another reserve favorite, has been better than most recent years. The flower is currently carpeting many sections of the park with

its beautiful silver spherical seedheads. When visiting, guests should be prepared for strong winds and watch out for the Mojave green rattlesnake, which the park says are not aggressive and will not attack unless startled or threatened. “They make

you aware of their presence because they want to avoid a confrontation,” says the website. “Rattlesnakes are an important part of the food web and are also protected. Without them, rodents could overpopulate and consume the flowers.” The Antelope Valley

California Poppy Reserve is located at 15101 Lancaster Road, Lancaster, CA, 93534. The reserve is open daily sunrise to sunset, with free tours available. Admission: $10 per vehicle. For more info, call (661) 942-0662 or visit: www. parks.ca.gov/?page_id=627

PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

We relieve you from the burden of answering day-to-day equipment issues.

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

able to continue to collect usage data.

Compliance through great patient care

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Survey on sales of tobacco Continued from page 1

in-store marketing and availability of tobacco, alcohol and food products. Businesses included in the survey were first identified by the state as ones that sell tobacco. The survey then looked at the product marketing and the availability of healthy and unhealthy options offered for sale such as alcohol, junk foods, sugary beverages, sodas, fresh fruit, vegetables and milk. The survey was done last summer in all 58 counties (both incorporated and unincorporated areas) in California. All county health departments and the three municipal health departments participated. Only stores that sold tobacco were included, from supermarkets, small grocery and convenience-style shops to liquor stores, discount chains, drug stores and big box retail. Health food stores or grocery stores that do not sell tobacco were excluded. In Pasadena, 97 stores that sell tobacco were surveyed. The stores were not identified by name. Of those 97 stores, almost 58 percent displayed some form of exterior advertising or signs that promoted unhealthy products while only about 13.5 percent

featured similar advertising for healthy products. Averages both statewide and throughout Los Angeles County indicated about 71 percent of the stores surveyed showed unhealthy product advertising and just 12 percent had healthy product advertising. The survey showed that many of the stores sell tobacco within 1,000 feet of schools. In Los Angeles County, nearly 40 percent of the businesses were within the 1,000-foot radius while statewide the percentage was about 27.5 percent and 32 percent in Pasadena. In Los Angeles County, less than half of those businesses surveyed sold any fresh fruits and vegetables. Statewide, the number was about 42 percent and about 38 percent for the Pasadena-based businesses surveyed. The survey also looked at sales of “alcopops,” a sugar-sweetened, fruity malt-liquor product. Statewide, about 82 percent of the stores carried such products, while the average was about the same in Los Angeles County and 60 percent for Pasadena businesses. In many instances, alcopop products were marketed in close proximity to regular

soda beverages, the survey found. “We’ve made a lot of strides in recent years but this survey shows that tobacco and other companies offering unhealthy products continue to find new ways and new products to entice our youth, many times in stores just a few blocks from schools,” said Dr. Eric Walsh, the City’s Public Health Officer and Director of the Pasadena Health Department. “We need healthier stores for a healthy community. Consumers have a right to select and have healthier food options available. As health officials, we want to work with retailers, partners and parents to protect our kids to achieve this health goal.” The Pasadena Public Health Department has worked to promote and protect the health of the Pasadena community for more than 120 years. significance of the work of three iconic American photographers: Documentary photographer, Dorothea Lange; Landscape photographer and social activist, Ansel Adams and incarcerated camp photojournalist, Toyo Miyatake, in bringing the news of this sad moment in American history to the attention of present day Americans, is the focus of documentary feature, THREE LENSES, currently in production at Santa Ana Media Production Company, Video Resources Inc. The story of the internment has great relevance for today’s world, according to THREE LENSES Executive Producer, Ecar Oden. “Some Americans possess a passing knowledge of the internment. But they may not appreciate the role that fear, racism and greed played in the singling out an entire race of people - most of whom were American citizens largely because they shared

‘the face of the enemy.’ THREE LENSES is not so much a Japanese American story as it is an American story made all the more relevant and timely by the very real possibility - recently confirmed by Supreme Court Justice Scalia - that it could easily happen again. “A greater knowledge by more Americans of this time in history is our society’s best protection from similar injustices happening in the future,” Oden concluded. As of March, 2014, more than a dozen interviews with historians, camp internees, family members and other contemporary experts have been completed, with an equal amount on the books for the coming months. However, finding former internees to appear on camera has been a challenge, according to writerproducer, Jeff Redd. “More than 120,000 men, women and children were relocated to the 10 internment camps during WWII, but few re-

main that are willing or able to tell of their first hand experiences there. We would love to speak with any former internee willing to share their stories, journals, home movies or photos.” Joining Oden and Redd on the production team are writer/producer Denis Donovan and director Brad Hagen. Donovan is an industry vet with dozens of documentary features to his credit and Hagen is Video Resources founder and CEO. In October, 2013, THREE LENSES was awarded the prestigious Abel Cine Documentary Grant, in competition with 86 other documentary concepts. An IndieGoGo Crowdfunding campaign to help with postproduction and marketing expenses will be undertaken later this spring. Track THREE LENSES progress on Facebook https:// www.facebook.com/threelenses on Twitter@threelenses and on http://threelenses. org.

Coastal Commission encourages taxpayers to protect California coast Through April of this year, the California Coastal Commission is launching the Check the Coast at Tax Time Campaign. It encourages Californians to give back to the coast by making a small donation to the Protect Our Coast and Oceans Fund when they are filing their state taxes this year. We would like to enlist your support by asking you to print our PSA in your publication or on your website, and help us raise awareness of this important new cause. Funds raised will go back into our communities, providing grants to clean up shorelines, restore habitat, bring kids to the coast (some for the first time), and improve beach access. Please see the overview below for background on the campaign. We will publicly acknowledge your support through our own social media and email networks. In addition, we would love it if you would

tweet or post about your support on social media. You can tag it #checkthecoast. We have images that are formatted for Facebook and Twitter use here. We welcome the opportunity to talk further and answer any questions. We hope you will support us! Thank you so much for your consideration. Regards, Chris and Judi About the Protect our Coast and Oceans Check Box Campaign The California Coastal Commission’s Public Education Program, the same team that oversees California Coastal Cleanup Day (now in its 30th year) and the Whale Tail Specialty License Plate is launching a new campaign to educate and empower the public to care about and care for the California coast and ocean. This tax season, Californians will have the

option of “checking the coast” – making a donation to the Protect Our Coast and Ocean Fund, right on their state tax form. Funds raised will go back into our communities through the Whale Tail Grants program. Whale Tail grants have supported more than 500 valuable projects throughout California over the past 16 years. Here are some grantee highlights. However, the need for these grants far outpaces the available funding. The Protect Our Coast and Oceans tax check-off will help to bridge this funding gap. To raise awareness so that all Californians know about this opportunity, we have partnered with Gyro San Francisco, a fantastic integrated marketing agency.
