California roads one step closer to being a source of energy Shortly after being elected, Assemblyman Mike Gatto (D-Los Angeles) had a conversation with a friend who had just returned from Israel. Expecting to hear emotional descriptions of religious sites, Gatto was surprised to hear his friend rave instead about a road that produced energy. After putting aside his credulity and researching the issue, Gatto found that engineers in Israel, Italy, and Japan had successfully installed piezoelectric sensors underneath roadways and railways. The technique uses tiny devices that look like watch batteries, embedded in pavement, to recapture energy that would be otherwise lost as vehicles rumble along. The Monterey Park Police Department will be conducting a special Traffic Safety Enforcement Operation on Thursday, February 6, 2014. Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas where officers have responded to frequent collisions cracking down on driving and pedestrian violations that cause collisions, injuries and fatalities. Motorist failing to yield to pedestrians and those walking into traffic are a serious safety concerns that puts everyone on the road at risk. In the most recent release of data - 2010, 578 have been killed and 11,429 seriously injured in California as a result of collisions that involved pedestrians. In Monterey Park officers have investigated 44 pedestrian involved fatal or injury collisions.

But it sure came in handy growing up. “I was with my cousins and they were boxing already,” Ramirez said. “I wanted to learn how to fight with them, to beat them up. It worked. At first, I got beat up, but then I started learning and I got better.”

Now 20 and a professional fighter, Ramirez – an Alhambra resident and graduate of Alhambra High School – was honored by the Alhambra City Council on Monday night for his work in the ring. And things have been going well for Ramirez, who is a featherweight, who is undefeated in his professional life. “It’s good,” Ramirez said. “I’m 10-0 now and

Sophia Song, a 15-yearold sophomore on the Keppel High girls’ basketball team, can attest to this as it was her father that introduced her to the sport when she was in the first grade. “My dad got me into it,” Song said. “A couple of my friends started playing basketball. It looked like a lot of fun and ever since then I just loved it.” Song, who said she would like to play basketball at UCLA after she graduates, said while she is having a good year, there is much more on which she can improve.

“Driving to the basket and shooting are good,” she said. “But I need to work on my defense and rebounding. I need to guard the post better. In college, I want to play guard, so now I need to get more physical with my game.” She added she really likes playing for Keppel coach Joe Kikuchi. “I love Coach Joe,” Song said. “He’s like the coolest coach ever. Glimpses of black history in Pasadena, 1850-1950 PMH Education Volunteer Adrian Panton takes us on a visual journey through a century of Black history in Pasadena and neighboring communities at a free presentation at the Altadena Senior Center on Tuesday, February 25, at 1:00 pm. Despite this area’s long tradition of diversity, much local recorded history has been heavily focused on elite elements of local life, with emphasis on topics such as Arroyo culture, Craftsman art and architecture, the Indiana Colony and their citrus groves, and the mansions of the very rich. While important, the emphasis on these particular stories leaves out the experiences of many of the city’s residents – individual and groups that contributed substantially to the growth of this area into the communities we know today. The Oaks at Ojai By Greg Aragon If it was possible to distill all the peaceful, relaxing and wellness qualities of Ojai down into one single resort hotel, the Oaks at Ojai would definitely be on the list. This award-winning destination spa is a place that helps one live and feel better. With a focus on healthy weight loss, overall wellness and conscious eating, the Oaks is about rejuvenation. I recently submersed myself into The Oaks for an inspiring experience. My getaway began when I checked into an incredible bungalow house overlooking the pool, with memorable views of the Topa Topa Mountains and the iconic cupola of downtown Ojai’s signature main street tower. To get to the room, I walked through the lobby, past the fitness center and spa area, then through a lush pool area speckled with sunbathers. At the end of a tree-lined pathway, I found a wooden gate, concealing a spacious patio and the large

arched doorway to my suite. Like the entire resort, the room is decked out in Spanish-Mission-styled architecture. Highlights include adobe-looking walls, exposed wooden beams, a big round fireplace, and wooden tables and chairs. My bedroom featured two queen beds, a large TV, a vanity area, and a back window for fresh air. The bathroom is also a thing of beauty, with a giant sunken, Jacuzzi tub and a separate walk-in shower. The living room boasts a sofa, office desk, kitchen sink, tile floors and huge sliding glass door leading to the patio. And the patio offers plenty of spacious shade and seating. After acquainted with the suite, I set out to discover the magic that attracts so many guests from around the country to this little healthy hideaway. I began in the lobby where I joined an orientation to tour the property and learn about the various resort activities. A hallmark at The Oaks are the fitness activities, divided between cardio classes, strength classes, and flexibility classes. The resort

suggests guests start with a foundation of one class of each type per day. For those who feel a little out of shape, there are also personal trainers to help get things started. For low-impact training there are many the Water Works exercises. Other activities include rollerblading, biking, hulahooping, and numerous hikes into the surrounding mountains. There are advanced hikes up to eight miles, intermediate fourmile hikes, and brisk threemile walks. After participating in the intermediate hike, I discovered the hotel’s spa, a favorite among returning patrons. Here I experienced wonderful 50-minute Swedish massage. The town of Ojai is known as a mecca for body workers and healers and many of them work at The Oaks. At the hotel’s spa visitors can indulge in a Ojai Pixie Tangerine Scrub, an Eye Rejuvenation treatment with a facial or a Thai Table massage, among others. technology could be put to good use in car-obsessed California. In 2011, Governor Jerry Brown vetoed Assemblyman Mike Gatto’s AB 306, which would have implemented two piezoelectric pilot projects on California freeways. Undeterred, Gatto asked the California Energy Commission (CEC) to study the issue. This week, the CEC is releasing preliminary research on the feasibility of using piezoelectric material in California roadways to capture wasted energy from cars. The paper is available here: http://www. energy.ca.gov/publications/ The CEC study found that piezoelectric energy could produce electricity at, “between $0.08-$0.20” per kilowatt hour, making it

cheaper than almost all current technologies, including roof-top solar. This is particularly impressive, especially considering that this energy is currently uncaptured, and therefore wasted. “California’s top state scientists have now confirmed that piezoelectric capture can affordably be put to good use in California,” said Gatto. “We’re the car capitol of the world, and we recycle just about everything. Why wouldn’t we capture the energy otherwise lost from roadside vibrations, and put it to good use?” Piezoelectric technology has been used for years in sonar and touchscreen phones. In 2009, the East Japan Railway Company in-

stalled piezoelectric flooring in their Tokyo railway station, using the energy generated by passing pedestrians to power all displays in the station. Israel has already placed this technology under some highways, and Italy has signed a contract to place the technology under a stretch of the Venice-to-Trieste Autostrada. A dance club in San Francisco has even piloted the technology under their dance floor to run their lighting. “Thirty years ago, no one would have believed that black silicon panels left in the desert could generate ‘solar’ power,” said Gatto. “Like solar power, piezoelectric technology is very real, and I am glad the state has finally acknowledged its potential.”

ACLU puts Supes in hot water, again Antonovich labels ACLU attorneys ‘Storm Troopers' Not entirely unexpected, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California sued the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors Thursday for voting to return a religious cross to the official County seal. “The restoration of the cross to the County seal favors the Christian religion over all other religions,” says the federal lawsuit. It argues that the addition of the cross would violate the Establishment Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The clause, part of the First Amendment, bars the preference of one religion over another by government agencies. The ACLU is representing eight religious leaders, including Reverend Edwin Bacon ofAll Saints Church in Pasadena, Rabbi Harold Schulweiss of Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, and Shakeel Syed, a lay leader in the

Muslim community. In 2004, under threat of another lawsuit by the ACLU, the board of supervisors voted 3-2 to remove the cross from the county seal. The cross was part of the first official seal, created in 1957, and was featured above a rendering of the Hollywood Bowl. The case went to the Supreme Court. Yaroslavsky, Molina, Burke – all Democrats – comprised the board majority that voted to remove the seal. Supervisors Mike Antonovich and Don Knabe, both Republicans, voted against removing the cross, and proposed restoring it last year. They argued they were making the seal historically correct, because the San Gabriel Mission depicted on the County seal has a cross. The ACLU lawsuit says

the only way to interpret the cross is as a religious symbol, and notes no other such symbols are on the seal. “Once again, the ACLU storm troopers are attempting to rewrite history,” said Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich. “However, just as other California municipalities have missions on their seals, Los Angeles County will prevail.” The action by the Board of Supervisors last month updated the seal with an accurate rendering of the current mission.

Governor Brown issues statement on State Water Project Allocations Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. today issued the following statement after the Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced that State Water Project allocation is being dropped to zero: “Today’s action is a stark reminder that California’s drought is real. We’re taking every possible step to prepare the state for the continuing dry conditions we face.” When Governor Brown declared a drought State of Emergency earlier this month, he directed state officials to take all necessary actions to prepare for water shortages. Last week, CAL FIRE announced it hired 125

additional firefighters to help address the increased fire threat due to drought conditions, the California Department of Public Health identified and offered assistance to communities at risk of severe drinking water shortages and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife restricted fishing on some waterways due to low water flows worsened by the drought. Also last week, the California Natural Resources Agency, the California Environmental Protection Agency and the California Department of Food and Agriculture also released the California Water Action Plan, which will guide state efforts to enhance water supply reliability, restore

damaged and destroyed ecosystems and improve the resilience of our infrastructure. Governor Brown has called on all Californians to voluntarily reduce their water usage by 20 percent and the Save Our Water campaign has announced four new public service announcements that encourage residents to conserve. Last December, the Governor formed a Drought Task Force to review expected water allocations and California’s preparedness for water scarcity. In May 2013, Governor Brown issued an Executive Order to direct state water officials to expedite the review and processing of voluntary transfers of water.

Kelli Kamida Killer on the bassketball court Standing at 5-foot-4, Kelli Kamida doesn’t look like a very ominous threat on the basketball court. But box her in a corner behind the three-point line and she can be deadly. So deadly that she hit 16 – yes, that’s right – threepoint baskets in the Mark Keppel High girls’ basketball team’s recent 90-50 victory over host Montebello High to set a school record. A bench player, Kamida is now averaging 17 points per game. Her coach Joe Kikuchi agreed that she doesn’t look like a killer near the basket. “She’s a tremendous shooter,” Kikuchi said of Kamida. “She doesn’t look like your typical athlete who’s going to score 48 points. But she gets the job done.” But Kikuchi said he wasn’t fooled by her lack of stature on the court when deciding to play her earlier in the season. “When she came up from (junior varsity) this past year I could already tell she was going to be a

She’s fun to be around and she works hard.” Kamida, a 16-year-old junior, said it was just fun to reach that accomplishment. “It was really exciting because it was my first year (on the varsity squad),” she said. “My teammates helped me, though, by passing me the ball. They just set me up well.” Kamida said she started playing basketball when she was 5 years old, adding that is has been a family affair. “My parents both play basketball and my whole family does,” she said. “My mom has a friend and her daughter started playing with me.” She added she just likes being part of the team. “I love how your teammates make you family and how close you are,” she said.
