Nearly 9,000 local, state and federal firefighters are battling 11 major wildfires across California. Despite windy conditions across much of Northern California and the Sierra, firefighters did make progress yesterday on those

fires. On Sunday, firefighters in Monterey County were able to contain the 4,500 acre Mission Fire at Fort Hunter Liggett, bringing the total number of large wildfires down from 12. Please see page 4

It was a Cal Phil weekend full of awe-inspiring performances, music magic and a string of standing ovations that marked the conclusion of another successful summer season for the orchestra and the building excitement for next year’s series. The spectacular season finale, Les Miz and Bernstein, attracted record numbers at both Festival on the Green at Santa Anita Race Track on Saturday August 24, 2013 and at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Sunday August 25. Randal Keith and Melissa Lyons Caldretti, stars of Les Miserables on Broadway and the National Tour, along with the Cal Phil Chorale, joined the acclaimed orchestra in an inspired selection of highlights from Les Miz, songs from Leonard Bernstein’s classics

Candide and Wonderful Town and the stirring orchestral Symphonic Dances From West Side Story. Commanding the podium with his singular style, an emotional Maestro Victor Vener expressed his gratitude to orchestra members, special guests and the audi-

ence for making this season such a resounding success and hinted of what to look forward to during Cal Phil’s 2014 summer season. As always, the 2014 series will take place every other weekend, Saturday evenings at Festival on the Green at Santa Anita race Track and Please see page 3

On Friday, August 23, 2013, at 7:49 a.m., 6 Glendale units (1 Battalion Command Team, 2 Engine Companies, 1 Truck Company, and 2 Basic Life Support Ambulances) were dispatched to a traffic collision on the Westbound 134 Freeway east of Brand Boulevard in the City of Glendale. Glendale Engine 26 arrived first on scene to discover a three-vehicle collision that caused one of the vehicles to roll onto its side. Three patients were outside of the vehicles upon the arrival of the firefighters. The Glendale Fire Department paramedics evaluated three patients at the scene. One of the patients had no injuries and two patients had minor injuries but due to

the extent of the injuries, those two patients were transported to a trauma center hospital for further medical evaluation. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the California Highway Patrol. Glendale Fire Department resources remained on scene for 1 hour and 24 minutes. The Glendale Fire Department would like to remind drivers to always wear their seat belts, and pay attention while driving to avoid serious accidents. The mission of the Glendale Fire Department is to protect life and property by providing the highest level of service to the community. Glendale approves trashy idea for 2014 Rose float The Glendale City Council approved Tuesday a 2014 Rose Parade float design patterned after a black bear who is famous for stealing meatballs from a Southern California garage freezer. The float, which will be Glendale’s 100th entry in Pasadena’s Tournament of Rose, will be showing a mechanical bear popping up and down from a trash can, wearing a lid on its head as a hat. It is called “Let’s Be Neighbors” and will feature other wildlife such as a skunk and a cayote. Glendale budgeted $155,000 for its Meatball the bear float, but is still accepting donations from its residents. Meatball the Bear was caught last year and was returned to the Angeles National Forest. It kept on returning to Glendale for three times, prompting the officials to ship it to an Alpine sanctuary.
