Credit card skimming operation busted In the early morning hours of Tuesday, August 13, 2013 the Glendale Police Department – Financial Crimes Unit executed search warrants on a ring of identity theft suspects. Over the last several months, an investigation of nine locations and nine suspects was conducted in cooperation with Orange County Sheriff’s Department, LASD – Identity Theft Task Force, Los Angeles Police Department, California Attorney General’s Office, and United States Secret Service. The warrant searches on the morning of August 13 resulted in the arrest of seven suspects, with three remaining outstanding. The identity theft investigation began in January 2013 when Glendale Officers conducted a traffic stop on a 2011 BMW with tinted windows. Monrovia police car hit in intersection On Friday night, August 9, a Monrovia Police Officer was rolling “Code 3”, lights and siren, when his cruiser was struck by another car. The other car had failed to stop as the police car rolled through an intersection although several other vehicles had stopped. According to the Monrovia Police Department, as the patrol vehicle began to cross the last lane of traffic, it was struck on the right rear portion, causing the patrol vehicle to travel up the sidewalk and strike a small tree. Witnesses indicated the other vehicle failed to
stop for the emergency vehicle when all other traffic on the road had yielded. According to Police Chief Jim Hunt, Officer James Ruano, who has been with the department for a “few years.” was taken to the hospital, but was released to return to work. His vehicle did not fare as well and is still being inspected for potential damage to its frame. Ruano was responding to a call for assistance from another unit which was in the process of detained Monrovia Police Officer involved in detaining suspects in a robbery.

The Board of Supervisors has authorized the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works to begin emergency efforts to protect residential communities below the Madison Fire Burn Area in Monrovia against the threat of post-fire mud and debris flows. The Madison Fire in April burned more than 80 acres and most of the vegetation which stabilizes hillsides creating a risk if inundation this winter. “Nearly a dozen homes are at risk of inundation this winter by an estimated 15,000 cubic yards of mud and debris,” said Supervisor Antonovich. The County Department of Public Works will strategically place K-rail and rail-and-timber structures in the burned watershed immediately above these homes as temporary measures against mud and debris flows. The barriers will remain in place util the burned watershed recovers, which could take about five years. The Board approved

1300 children get a helping hand in preparation for new school year 1,800 registered children of Foothill Unity Center client families attended the annual Back to School giveaway to Santa Anita Park in Arcadia Tuesday morning to pick up new backpacks, gradeappropriate school supplies, uniforms, and clothing they need to start the school year with confidence. A little different this year as the location switched to the west end of the race track, however the enthusiasm from students and volunteers was none the less exuberant.
