Child support programs help parents be successful August is ‘Child Support Awareness Month’ serving to remind parents that providing child support is one of the many ways they demonstrate love for their children. The California Department of Child Support Services (DCSS) is commemorating the month by recognizing California’s 51 local child support agencies in counties across the state, as well as the courts that collectively provide the services necessary to help children get the financial and medical support they are entitled to in a fair and consistent manner statewide. “Our mission is to collect money owed to families so that children have the security and support they need, but we recognize that some parents face challenges to making their child support payments including underemployment, re-entry after incarceration, or other challenges. Local child support agencies, through partnerships, can play an important role for parents trying to be successful in making consistent child support payments,” said Kathleen Hrepich, Interim Director of DCSS.

Parents who are past due on child support payments are encouraged to stop by their local child support agency. When appropriate, child support professionals provide their customers with referrals to other programs for crisis intervention, social services, workforce programs and community organizations that can help address non-child support needs. Each county is different, and they strive to address the unique characteristics of their community with links to programs that can assist parents so that they can be more successful in meeting their child support obligations.

Children have the right to be supported by both parents for their financial, medical and emotional needs. The California Department of Child Support Services, together with the local child support agencies, collected a combined $2.3 billion in distributed collections during the past federal fiscal year ending in September 2012. That’s a $48 million increase over the previous federal fiscal year. Of that, $1.8 billion was distributed directly to families, and $500 million was distributed to the state and federal governments for recoupment of public assistance and foster care expenses.

New pilot sidewalk repair program begins in Pasadena A new Pilot Sidewalk Repair Partnership Program has been launched by Pasadena’s Department of Public Works that encourages a collaboration between the City and private property owners to fix public sidewalks damaged by City-owned tree roots. Under the new program, the City will match 50 percent of the cost of the sidewalk repair up to a maximum of $1,000 per parcel. Income-qualified residents may be eligible to receive a match of up to 70 percent of the cost of sidewalk repair, also to a maximum of $1,000 per parcel. Income qualifications are based on criteria from the Pasadena Water and Power Department’s Electric Assistance Program (UUAP) http://www. ci.pasadena.ca.us/waterandpower/CARE/. To be eligible, property owners cannot be currently engaged in the sale of their property and/or cannot already be involved in a building permit process for improvements to the property valued at $20,000 or more. Damage to the sidewalk must be caused by a City-

owned tree and verified by the City. Damaged to sidewalks caused by privately owned trees or damage due to other circumstances are not eligible for the program and remain the property owner’s responsibility to repair and maintain. Property owners can submit an application for any residential property located within City of Pasadena with existing sidewalks that are damaged by City-owned tree roots. The City will inspect the sidewalk to determine qualifications, condition, project limits and if the sidewalk was damaged by City tree roots. The City will then send an agreement to the property owner with the cost. The work will be scheduled by the City once the invoice has been paid in full. The City will be responsible for permits and working with a designated contractor to do the work. The pilot program is based on a first come, first serve basis until funds have been expended. Dorothy's Place Lessons in life

By Dorothy Denne Did you read last week's Letters to the Editor? I hope so. There was a nice letter in there about me. It made me feel good. It also made me go to my file where I keep my "fan mail" that I've received over the years. Now, if you are a regular reader you know that when I go back in my files that means time spent reading, actually re-reading. This was no exception. I spent hours reading letters, cards, and any particular columns they referred to. That wasn't really wasted time because the fact that it took that long made me feel good too. Now that it is deadline time to write another, I'm going to draw on some of those I re-read. I've learned a few lessons in this life. Some took me far longer than they should have.

One of the more recent I've learned is when I start a project, keep my mouth shut until it's finished. That way I won't have to give explanations when what I thought would take about three months, turns into a year. Another is don't get involved in a routine where people observe me in the same place at the same time all the time, then suddenly stop being in the same place at the same time. Throws people into a tizzy. That was unkind to them but it did make me feel really good to learn how many people were concerned. I let it go straight to my head. There's another lesson I should have learned a long time ago - never let anything go straight to your head. Like the time the little first grader said to me, "Mrs. Denne, you always look so pretty when you come to work." I smiled but before I could say thank you, he added, "But you don't look so good today." Browsing through my files produced a reminder of a lesson we all need to learn about yesterday, today and tomorrow. There are two

days in every week about which we should not worry, two days which should be kept from fear and apprehension. One of those days is Yesterday with its mistakes and cares, its faults and blunders, its aches and pains. Yesterday has passed forever beyond our control. The other day we should not worry about is Tomorrow with its possible adversities, its burdens, its large promise and poor performance. Tomorrow is also beyond our immediate control. This leaves only Today. We can fight the battles of just one day. It is only when you and I add the burdens of Yesterday and Tomorrow that we break down. It is not the experience of Today that drives men mad. It is remorse or bitterness for something which happened Yesterday and the dread of what will happen Tomorrow. Given that, I think I'll close my file, make myself pretty (?), then go sit in my same place at my same time and say hello to my friends today. We'll share life's lessons.

Letters to the Editor Send your letters to tmiller@beaconmedianews.com Dear Editor: Does Dorothy Devine (SIC) actually get paid for writing nonsense? Who cares whether she still irons or not?! Her column is a total waste of time and complete silliness! Can’t you find somebody else to write a column? She rambles on about absolutely nothing important and it is not even funny. C. Johnson Temple City Editor’s Note: Dear C. Johnson: Thank you for your letter, albeit rather off-center. In answer to your first question, we do not pay columnists. However, should policy change, Dorothy ‘Devine’ would be the first on the list to receive remuneration. For the record, Doro-

thy’s last name is Dennealthough I’m sure she’ll feel honored to hear that she has acquired such a Saintly moniker . In reference to your comment on her column being “a total waste of time”… Denne is not only one of the founding Matriarchs of this newspaper group but one of the funniest women I’ve ever known. Everyone I run into considers her column hilarious…often, side-splittingly so. In point-of-fact, yours is the very first letter I’ve ever received in 15 years with a negative tone towards ‘Dorothy’s Place’. We have received countless letters over the years praising Denne for her insightful wit and repartee that is such a delightful distraction from a complex and often dreary

world. One such letter was printed in last week’s issue. Denne’s ruminations along with a couple of books she has published in recent years will always be a treasured part of Beacon Media Inc., and remain in our library for eternity…or, perhaps, longer! Referring to her column as “complete silliness” is, well, complete and utter silliness defined. Denne’s life observations may be silliness to you, but to a great many of us , reading ‘Dorothy’s Place‘ each week is a most-welcome breather in a world already filled with entirely too much hotair, hatred, hypocrisy and hype. We welcome letter(s) on all subjects. Please send your letters to: tmiller@ beaconmedianews.com

Dear Editor: Thank you for the headline article on the front page of the Monrovia Weekly "Zimmerman acquittal cause friction in LA; Peaceful protests in San Gabriel Valley." It was nice to read that there were peaceful marches in Pasadena compared to the Los Angeles area. The colored photograph definitely depicts a peaceful march as the people wore shirts in honor of Trayon Martin who was innocently killed by a White Latino man in Florida. The article was very informative because I didn't get a chance to follow all of the Trayon Martin trial and aftermath. It's sad that young Black and Latino men are not valued when they are innocently killed and the killer is not convicted. I can relate to this because I have a son that is a nice hard working man that has good character. Consequently, what if my son had a hoodie on and someone didn't

know his character and someone conceived in their depraved mind that he was violent and he was killed. Another young life would be taken and another mother would be burying her son and wondering why? Somehow, some way the inequality among minorities, poor people, homeless and non-minorities has to stop. In Monrovia we have a good police force, but sometime there are police that hassle some of the decent young men for no reason at all. It is evident in our city that minorities are racially profiled compared to non-minorities. I also realize that police have to be careful too because they are targeted by gangs and violent people. I would like to know what plan of actions are set in place by the Monrovia Police Department, Monrovia City Council and our Congressman so that history does not keep repeating itself. Society is in need

of a solution so that everyone can enjoy equality in their communities and not be targeted because of the color of their skin or the attire they wear. Editor if you know of any solutions that Monrovia is incorporating please let me know. Jennifer Boone Editor’s Note: Thank you for your thoughtful letter. This issue is extremely complex and will take each of us to respect his fellow man no matter what his national origin; what he does for a living or what color his skin is. Racial profiling is ugly…a reminder that the 1960’s struggle for equality really wasn’t that long ago, after all. Combine this with recent legislation that essentially turned the clock back on voting rights, and you have a recipe for discrimination. Let’s hope our legislators wake up and come back to the future.

Probation officers join El Monte PD to manage parolees released In response to the State of California’s prisoner realignment program that resulted in the release of thousands of non-violent convicts to local communities, the El Monte Police Department will have two probation officers on assignment to assist in their supervision. The Los Angeles County Probation Department has arranged for two probation officers to be assigned to the El Monte Police Department. The collaboration will allow for both departments to work closely in administering the program and keeping parolees in compliance with the terms of their release. The Post Release Community Supervision program, also known as Assembly Bill 109, was designed to alleviate the overcrowding of the state’s prison system. Under the law, nonviolent, non-sexual and non-serious criminals

are sentenced to county jail instead of state prisons, shifting the responsibility of postrelease supervision from the state to the communities that they resided in before their incarceration. The El Monte Police Department has since dedicated a portion of its resources to the monitoring and supervision of its residents who are released under the program.

LASD offers tattoo removal for inmates Inmates in the custody of the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department have the opportunity to participate in a tattoo removal program. Tattoos were once considered permanent, but are now possible to remove them using laser treatments. The tattoo program utilizes the latest technology in tattoo removal and it has been a great success. The Sheriff’s Department has implemented new programs such as Education Based Incarceration, the Community Transition Unit, and the Tattoo Clinic. The implementation of these programs is an attempt to reduce recidivism; the rate of inmates committing new crimes. It is the hope that through these programs the inmate’s sense of worth will improve and opportunities for employment will increase after their release from custody. The Tattoo Removal program started in February 2012 as a collaborative partnership between The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Medical

themselves while in custody carry that commitment with them as they re-enter our communities,” said Medical Services Bureau Captain Kuykendall. The tattoo removal process uses a laser that produces a short pulse of intense light, which passes through the top layers of skin to be selectively absorbed by the tattoo pigment. This breaks down the tattoo ink, which is then absorbed by the body, and the tattoo fades. Most patients need between three to eight sessions to

completely remove the tattoo. Treatment sessions are scheduled every eight weeks. The Tattoo Removal Program helps give inmates a positive change and has had overwhelming positive feedback from the participants. The tattoo clinic, along with education and vocational training, are part of the Sheriff Department’s programs to help inmates secure employment, and reduce the likelihood that they will commit more crimes in the future.

5,495 illegal guns melted down into rebar On Tuesday, July 30, 2013, Sheriff Baca announced the destruction of 5,495 weapons confiscated from criminals in Los Angeles County and collected through the “Gifts for Guns” exchange program. Annually, Gerdau Steel Mill, located in Rancho Cucamonga, donates its furnace, equipment and personnel to convert these weapons into steel rebar. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works also donates the trucks every year that transport the weapons to the Mill. These weapons were melted into steel reinforcing bar (rebar) and ultimately will be transformed into elements of construction for upgrades in freeways and bridges in Arizona, California and Nevada. “Our partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department allows us the opportunity to make an impact in our community,” said Jim Crompton, Vice President and General Manager of Gerdau Steel Mill. “We are taking weapons that could destroy our community and repurposing them into steel

that will literally help build our community.” Twelve law enforcement agencies have contributed confiscated weapons to this program. These agencies include Downey Police Department, Long Beach Police Department, Signal Hill Police Department, Claremont Police Department, El Montel Police Department, West Covina Police Department, Whittier

Police Department, Santa Monica Police Department, Bell Gardens Police Department, Culver City Police Department, El Camino College Police Department and Inglewood Police Department. “These weapons that you see here will never again be used to commit a crime or used to threaten or intimidate an innocent victim,” Baca said.

Hundreds attended this year’s first summer concert at Arceo Park in the City of El Monte on Wednesday, July 24. Bandleader Ray Carrion put together “Thee Latin AllStars,” featuring well-known artists like Steve Salas from “Tierra,” Ersi Arvizu from “El Chicano,” Greg Esparza from “Thee Midniters,” and Sal Rodriguez from “War.” During two sets the band performed hits anywhere from the soulful “Sabor a Mi” to the Mexican ranchera “Volver,

Volver” and the El Monteans seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time outdoors dancing, singing along, and perusing the vendor and food booths placed about the park. In attendance were members of the El Monte City Council including Mayor Andre Quintero and Mayor Pro Tem Norma Macias with their respective families. The concert was recorded by El Monte’s Channel 3. The event was one of three scheduled at the park in a series called “Rockin’

Wednesdays” that will continue July 31 with “La Internacional Sonora Show” and August 7 with “Los Pistoleros.” August 7 has also been appointed by the El Monte Police Department as “National Night Out,” and the first 1,000 residents in attendance at the park that evening will receive a complimentary flashlight. newspapers and the City of Sierra Madre city manager Elaine Aguilar for allegedly refusing to be tape-recorded in an interview regarding the water crisis. This, of course, is simply not true. As the old saying goes, tell 5 people the same story and you’ll get 5 different stories often with completely different endings. It appears that this is what happened here. Firstly, here’s what the Sierra Madre Tattler told readers last week: “The City Hall media blitz to sell the latest water rate increase to reluctant residents here did not get off to the greatest of starts this week. And, if the story I'm hearing is true, and I believe that it is, the apparent cause of the City Manager's confusion was the possible presence of a tape recorder. Earlier this week it had become known to us that City Hall had scheduled a series of interviews about the water situation here in town, and with three news outlets. Those being the Pasadena Star News, the Beacon Media fam-

ily of newspapers (which includes the Sierra Madre Weekly), and the Patch. The Mountain Views News was not on the list I saw, though perhaps that was because they are content to work from press releases alone. So apparently our friend and colleague, Terry Miller of the Beacon Media newspaper group, had scheduled a sit down with Elaine Aguilar. The topic was to be Sierra Madre's water crisis, and from the perspective of what Terry had been hearing about the situation from residents. Apparently Beacon Media's phones have been ringing off the hook with calls from Sierra Madre folks clearly panicked about the water crisis. Tellingly, many were also fearful about leaving their names. Also, why would she have scheduled a meeting with Terry Miller, only to later tell him that she was heading out the door for a vacation? Here is my take. I believe that Elaine hoped this would have been a light

chat with the Sierra Madre Weekly, with her telling Terry what this water stuff is all about. The expectation being that he would write it all down and then dutifully repeat her thoughts verbatim in his paper. What Terry's courtesy call tipped her off to was this was not going to be that kind of a meeting at all. Rather he was interested in getting her reaction to some very specific resident water concerns, and that he and those accompanying him would be expecting to hear some real answers. I think City Hall is very fearful over possibly losing control of the message. Sierra Madre's water crisis is real, the possible consequences frankly dangerous, both politically and otherwise, and there are certain things that the city would prefer not be discussed. I also believe that this loss of control is already happening. They are in serious trouble, and Elaine's erratic actions as described above shows that she clearPlease see page 18

Dear Emmy, My husband and I are nearing retirement. I’ve heard that we can file for Social Security but delay receiving it. What’s the benefit in this? Deciding when to receive your Social Security benefits matters a great deal. By delaying your benefits for a few years, your monthly income can increase markedly. There are three factors that impact your benefit amount: your lifetime earnings, lifespan and the election date. The first two aspects are beyond your ability to substantially change, so choosing an appropriate election date is a crucial decision. The earliest age to begin receiving Social Security is 62. The latest, that affects the benefit amount, is 70. The monthly payout one can receive increases for every year benefits are deferred. After both of you reach full retirement age, roughly 66 for folks born after 1943, you have the option to elect a limited benefit for a period of time then switch to

a larger benefit in the future. This is called a ‘switch strategy.’ There are two aspects of switch strategies: ‘restricted applications’ & ‘file and suspend.’ After filing a Social Security application, you can turn around and voluntarily restrict or exclude certain benefits, allowing them to continue building delayed retirement credits. This could earn you more money down the road. But once you’ve filed, you may be eligible to receive the spousal benefit from your spouse’s social security plan. Spousal benefits are not available until the primary earner has filed for his or her own benefits. So for example, the higher earning spouse can file for benefits, then immediately suspend them to continue earning delayed credits. But in the meantime, the lower earning spouse can collect spousal benefits from the suspended plan right away. This can supply a modest income now, hopefully augmented by your individual retirement account income. Then at 70, the higher benefit amount can be activated. This can be especially helpful if you’re concerned that your personal retirement savings may not stretch past a decade or more. As your IRA becomes depleted, the Social Security income can help make up the difference. A single person can do a ‘break even’ analysis to

determine whether to take early payments or wait. This is relatively straight forward. For married couples, choosing an election date can be more complex. Social Security offers two additional benefits for married people. As discussed above, spousal benefits provide your spouse with a smaller income after you claim you own. Additionally, there are survivor benefits, which provide your spouse with income after your death. Factoring in these aspects can be complicated and affects each family differently. The Department of Labor has recently published an online resource called the Retirement Toolkit. This toolkit includes a list of publications and interactive tools to help with your retirement planning. Jewish federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys presents Neil Simon’s rumors The Jewish Federation of the Greater San Gabriel and Pomona Valleys’ Cultural Arts Program will be holding open auditions for its 5th production, Neil Simon’s Rumors. Auditions will be held Monday, July 29 and Tuesday, July 30 at 7:00p.m. at the Jewish Federation (550 S. Second Ave., Arcadia) and Wednesday, July 31 at 7:00p.m. at Temple Beth Israel of Pomona (3033 N. Towne Ave., Pomona). Celebrated and award winning playwright, Neil Simon’s first foray into farce is one that is not to be missed by humor seeking enthusi-

asts. Mr. Simon (Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Odd Couple) buckles the audience up for a bumpy night in his delightfully jocular 1988 Tony Award winning play, Rumors. Chaos and hullabaloo ensue when the guests of a tenth anniversary dinner party for the deputy mayor of New York are shocked to find that their host has shot himself, his wife is missing and (heaven forbid!) the kitchen staff has vanished. What are a bunch of severely unprepared middle class couples in fancy clothing to do? They don’t know either. What follows is an evening of

mistaken identity, poor judgment and a temporary case of hearing loss that keeps the house in stiches and begging for more. Rumors will run in October at the Jewish Federation located in Arcadia. Performance dates are Sunday, October 6 at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 12 at 8:00 p.m., Sunday, October 13 at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 19 at 8:00 p.m., Sunday, and October 20 at 2:00 p.m. For questions or optional audition dates, please contact Cantor Judy Sofer at jsofer@jewishsgpv.org or (626) 445-0810 ext. 25.

Making a difference, one pet at a time... It takes someone who cares The Day Everything Changed Adapted by Darlene Papa from an email by Steve Hofstetter Steve and his wife, Sara, had been on a road trip to Visalia, with their dog, Bea Arthur. They had just pulled over north of Modesto for Sara to drive--when they saw him. It was a little mutt, running around a gas station. They chased the dog but he was extremely fast. They were told that Animal Control had been trying to catch the dog for weeks. When Steve finally caught it, he said, “The poor dog was terrified – it peed so much I felt like I had squeezed a water bottle.” It was too scared to even eat a treat. Steve named the dog Carlin, “for finding him on a car trip.” At Petco they bought supplies. They would have him examined, and then find a no-kill shelter or a neighbor to take him. “The pup wouldn’t walk in the parking lot, probably having never been on a leash before, so I carried him back to the car and began looking for a dog park to help calm him.” At the park, even off leash, he wouldn’t walk. “He ate a little bit – but he wouldn’t drink any water. All of our coaxing did not help.” Poor little guy . . . he was such a sweet little animal. “At first, we attributed Carlin’s twitching to fear, his weakness to hunger, and his missing teeth to a life on the streets. It was becoming increasingly clear that Carlin was

gremlin one last hug goodbye. “I wish the story ended differently. I wish I could show you ‘after’ pictures, where Sara and Bea and I are all playing with my new goofy little gremlin. But I can’t. “When I say today was the day that everything changed, I don’t mean for me. Yes, I am more determined to help any stray I see, to donate money to rescues, and to use my stage to influence others. But today, things didn’t change for me – they changed for Carlin. His life of fear ended quietly in a hospital instead of in agony in a gas station parking lot. And it ended with three things he’d never had before – love, protection, and the dignity of a name.” Not every story has to have a happy ending. Some can just have a happy couple of hours.

very sick – and a lifetime of running had made it worse. “But he wasn’t running from us now. He trusted us enough to just lay in the grass, alternating between eating and sleeping, two things he wasn’t able to do with any sense of certainty just an hour earlier. Carlin soon cuddled into Sara’s lap and fell asleep.” The only vet option in this remote location was the SPCA. “As we drove, we knew there was a good chance Carlin would be put down. We might have been saving his life – but the odds were we just gave him one nice afternoon after a lifetime of fear. The Fresno SPCA’s diagnosis was devastating: “an incurable condition called distemper, a disease that proves fatal in most cases. Though completely avoidable with a simple vaccination, distemper is one of the worst diseases a dog can contract, and it causes tooth loss, trouble walking, and dehydration with no desire to drink. The worst part is that, while incurable, distemper is treatable if caught in time. Had Animal Control – or anyone else – bothered to catch a scared little dog, his disease might have been manageable. “The optimist in me wanted to pay the several thousand dollars for a distemper test to make sure. The realist in me accepted what was happening, and gave my little

Arcadia School District mandated to honor transgender student's rights Continued from page 1

school and in all other aspects of his life for several years, will be treated like other male students while attending school in the district. The agreement, joined by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, which participated in the investigation, resolves a complaint filed in October 2011. The complaint alleged that the district had prohibited the student from accessing facilities consistent with his male gender identity, including restrooms and locker rooms at school, as well as sex-specific overnight accommodations at a school-sponsored trip, because he is transgender. The United States investigated this complaint under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Both Title IX and Title IV prohibit discrimination against students based on sex. Under the settlement agreement, the district will: • work with a consultant to support and assist the district in creating a safe, nondiscriminatory learning environment for students who are transgender or do not conform to gender stereotypes;

• amend its policies and procedures to reflect that gender-based discrimination, including discrimination based on a student’s gender identity, transgender status, and nonconformity with gender stereotypes, is a form of discrimination based on sex; and • train administrators and faculty on preventing gender-based discrimination and creating a nondiscriminatory school environment for transgender students. Additionally, the district will take a number of steps to treat the student like all other male students in the education programs and activities offered by the district. The district-wide provisions of the agreement will be in place until the end of the 2015-2016 school year. The student-specific provisions of the agreement will be in place as long as the student is enrolled in the district. “All students, including transgender students, have the right to attend school free from discrimination based on their sex,” said Jocelyn Samuels, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division. “We commend

the district for taking affirmative steps to ensure that this student and his peers can continue to learn and thrive in a safe and nondiscriminatory environment.” “ O u r commitment to civil rights enforcement runs deep and nowhere is that commitment more meaningful than in our schools,” said André Birotte, Jr., United States Attorney for the Central District of California. “This agreement helps ensure continued advancement towards equal rights under the law for all students.” In recent years, the Justice Department and the Department of Education resolved a number of cases involving gender-based harassment in public schools. In 2012, the

departments entered into a consent decree addressing harassment against students who do not conform to gender stereotypes in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, Minn. In 2011, the departments entered into an agreement with the Tehachapi Unified School District, Calif., to resolve a similar complaint of harassment against a gay student who did not conform to gender stereotypes. “Teenage years are hard enough to navigate when the only concerns are making friends and learning the lessons of the day,” said Rep. Judy Chu. “But those challenges are compounded when a teenager happens to be LGBT, and basic notions of equal treatment are

The Arcadia Unified School District readily offered full cooperation with the investigation, and began allowing the student access to the facility while the process was ongoing. As part of the agreement, AUSD will update its policies to reflect sex-based discrimination, including sex stereotypes and discrimination based on gender identity and transgender status. AUSD will also train their administration and faculty on creating non-discriminatory environments for transgender students. “I commend the AUSD, the Department of Education and the DOJ for their diligence and attention to this important situation. they have done many times before, the federal government has stood up for the rights of all Americans.” According to the Department of Justice, in recent years, the Justice Department and the Department of Education resolved a number of cases involving gender-based harassment in public schools. In 2012, the departments entered into a consent decree addressing harassment against students who do not conform to gender stereotypes in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, Minn. In 2011, the departments entered into an agreement with the Tehachapi Unified School District, Calif., to resolve a similar complaint of harassment against a gay student who did not conform to gender stereotypes. Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 each prohibit harassment based on sex. The enforcement of Title IV and Title IX are top priorities of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.” A play. Adapted for the stage by Laura Eason. Based on the novel by Mark Twain. Directed by Aaron Lyons. Produced for Sierra Madre Playhouse by Christian Lebano. At the Sierra Madre Playhouse, 87 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre, Ca. 91024. Ample free parking behind theatre. August 9-September 7, 2013. Fri. at 7:00, Sat. at 5:00, Sun. at 11:00a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Sierra Madre Playhouse introduces a show suitable for family audiences presented at family-friendly times, ideal for when youngsters are on vacation. This is intended to be a regular summer feature at the Playhouse. The challenge was in finding a show that would be just as appealing to adults as it is to younger audiences. "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" answers that challenge. Based on Mark Twain's 1876 novel (itself suggested by his own earlier boyhood), the story is set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, a town on the bank

of the Mississippi River. Tom is a young boy full of mischief but with a good heart. The play includes everyone's favorite episodes from, Twain's book: Going to school; outsourcing his chores; falling in love with pretty Becky Thatcher; playing at being pirates with best friend, the homeless kid Huckleberry Finn; being trapped in a cave; faking his own death and attending his own funeral; and witnessing a murder and confronted with saving the life of a falsely accused man. For the adults, it's fun to watch a favorite tale onstage. For younger audiences, it's a wonderful introduction to the works of Mark Twain. The locale of Sierra Madre itself, with its trade-mark feel of retro Americana, is the perfect place to enjoy another classic piece of Americana. Laura Eason is the adapter. Currently staff writer for acclaimed TV series "House of Cards", she is the author of more than twenty plays. Her most recent works for the stage include "Sex With Strangers," an adaptation of "Around The World in 80

Days," and the book for a musical, "Days Like Today." She is a graduate of Northwestern University. Aaron Lyons directs. His most recent directorial efforts were for successful shows at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, "Sewer Rats at Sea" and "Double Blind." Also an actor, he appeared at the Fringe im "The Devil and Billy Markham" (which received four Fringe Awards) and in the Antacus production of "The Crucible." Lyons' cast for "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" includes ( in alphabetical order) Sierra Campbell-Unsoeld, Jeff Doba, Hank Doughan, Katie Hotchkiss, Brandon Matthew Karrer, Cameron Miller, Mike Rosenbaum, Jason Thomas and Jennifer Zahlit. Stage manager: Cody Clark. Lighting design: Maura Reinhart. Costume design: Sara Michele Gray. $25, Seniors (65+) and students (13-17), $22. Children 12 and under, $15. El Monte youth go on lifeguard duty Through Aug. 8, youths ages 10 to 15 are participating in the City of El Monte’s Junior Lifeguard Program, which is run by the City of El Monte Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department’s Aquatics Division. The month long 2013 American Red Cross Guard Start Program, held at the El Monte Aquatic Center, provides a foundation for lifeguarding and life skills. For kids with swimming skills, this program is an ideal transition between Red Cross Learn- to-Swim and the Lifeguard Training Course. “Through this pro-

gram, students are challenged mentally and physically to be lifeguardsin-training, learning First Aid, CPR and water safety,” said El Monte Councilman Juventino “J” Gomez. “It also gives them a chance to spend their summer working alongside real lifeguards, seeing them in action and learning what they do to help save lives. It’s exciting that our kids fully embrace the program and rigors that come with it.” Candidates for the program were required to have the ability to swim 50 yards, tread water for one minute and swim under water for 10 yards during a

skill pre-test at the Aquatic Center. Aside from teaching fitness and swimming skills, the program is also aimed at educating participants on how to prevent aquatic accidents, respond in an emergency situation, and develop leadership skills and professionalism as a lifeguard. Among the many activities scheduled, participants are learning how to perform CPR, shadowed a professional lifeguard and took trips to Huntington Beach, the Santa Fe Dam and Raging Waters to experience various types of lifeguard environments.

and Pasadena. Completed on time and under budget by the Metro Gold Line Foothill Extension Construction Authority (Construction Authority), the segment included 13 stations – six in Los Angeles, six in Pasadena and one in South Pasadena. Once completed, it was turned over to Metro to operate. Since operation of the line began in 2003, millions of passengers have used the line. Ridership has increased consistently every year. Today, nearly 1.1 million rides occur on the line each month, a 300% increase since the initial monthly ridership in 2003 of just under 362,000. Speaking at the event today was Congresswoman Judy Chu, State Assemblyman Chris Holden, County Supervisor Michael Antonovich, Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard, Construction Authority board chairman Doug Tessitor and numerous other local elected officials from the throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Here is what a few of the speakers said: Pasadena Mayor Bill Bogaard began today’s celebration by welcoming everyone to Pasadena and then highlighting the changes that have occurred in the city since the Gold Line’s completion. “The Gold Line’s arrival has caused a true renaissance in the city of Pasadena. It has improved the fabric of our city and changed how our residents, workers and visitors travel every day.” He added, “Nearly 2,300 new residential units; 750,000 square feet of new-

ly constructed retail and commercial space; as well as numerous other projects that either renovated or adaptively reused our historic buildings. Even using a conservative ratio, the transit oriented development projects in Pasadena along the Gold Line have already generated more than $1 billion dollars for the region.” Congresswoman Judy Chu reminded the attendees that the Gold Line was not initially supported by Metro or some of the community members: “Over a decade ago, it wouldn’t have necessarily been a given that this Gold Line would have been completed. There was no easy way to get from Pasadena to downtown, and yet there was a lot of resistance to build this line - so much so that the state legislature had to create a new independent agency to construct the Gold Line.” She added: “This place is thriving and it is so active every single day. It’s such a success with the 44,000 riders every day; in fact,

Art Leahy said that there are so many riders on this line that Metro is going to be buying more rail cars to speed up service and serve more public transportation customers. The challenge is to continue this line to Claremont and then Ontario Airport.” Assemblyman Chris Holden stated: “I remember back in the late 90’s when then Senator Adam Schiff took it upon himself to work through the legislature to create the Gold Line Construction Authority. That action was so pivotal to moving this project forward and creating the kind of synergy that it needed at the time; and certainly has put it on track to see it make its way out to the farthest eastern part of the San Gabriel Valley (and hopefully before not too long into the San Bernardino County area, connecting to the Ontario Airport).” He added: “It makes good sense, it’s common sense and it’s the kind of public transportation we want to encourage our citizens to take part in.”

PRESCRIBING FOR SLEEP APNEA? YOUR DME COMPANY LETTING YOU DOWN? If you’re frustrated with your DME provider, find out why thousands of physicians prefer “Classic”

Why Classic?

“Sleep” is our specialty. That’s right, no oxygen, scooters, wheelchairs, beds or other DME. We supply only PAP equipment and related replenishment supplies. This allows us to be real experts in what we do and to concentrate on delivering the patient care that matters. The fact we serve more than 18,000 patients over 18 states and are growing rapidly is testament to our focus and commitment to delivering timely setup and having happy and compliant patients.

Compliance through great patient care

is what really sets us apart from the pack. Our licensed respiratory professionals (respiratory therapists and registered sleep techs) work with patients from the time of setup and throughout their therapy with one goal in mind…to ensure they quickly adapt to their therapy and stay compliant over time.

Our CPAP Circle of Care® program

was carefully designed to achieve this. The first step of the program is for one of our licensed respiratory therapists to complete the setup faceto-face with the patient, either in their home or their doctor’s office, usually within 72 hours of approval. Our R/T will set the machine to the prescription and then educate the patient on its use, care and maintenance. And educate the patient on what to expect over the first days and weeks of their therapy. We set up all patients on the highest quality machines fitted with wireless modems (regardless of insurance). And we leave the modems on the machine indefinitely so as to be

able to continue to collect usage data. After setup patients are passed to our patient care center for ongoing compliance care. Our licensed clinicians make outgoing calls at 72 hours, 30 days and 90 days after setup to interdict any problems patients may be having. A field R/T will make a re-visit to a patient in their home where a problem cannot be resolved over the phone.

Download on Demand® - Driving Compliance

When calling patients we use data generated from our proprietary Download on Demand® software. This takes the raw data streams from patient’s modems, parses the data to produce compliance reports containing key data points and a graph that our clinicians use so that they can have an intelligent conversation with the patient based on that patient’s actual use of their equipment. Of course patients can (and do!) call in to our patient care center for help and advice from our clinicians at any time.

Our goal is to have happy, compliant patients while taking the brunt of the every-day questions patients invariably have. This relieves the burden from our referring physician’s offices who otherwise have to deal with this call volume, and depending on the experience of the doctor in this field, may not be able to answer typical questions the patient has regarding equipment issues (e.g. how to fix a leaking mask).

Skeptical?

So you’ve heard it all before? All the DME’s brag that they’re the best and have a great compliance and supply replenishment program.... everybody talks the talk...so who do you believe? Your patients...that’s who! We’ll prove it to you. Send us two or three patients and then ask your patients about the care they received and their opinion of the process... then compare the results to your existing DME provider. Talk to your staff about the interaction they have with our office. Look at our documentation. Reach out to Bill Kleiman (contact info below) to set up an inservice over lunch with your staff to go over our program and answer any questionvs you may have.

The prescribing doctor receives documentation by eFax (or electronically via EMR system integration), starting with confirmation of receipt of the referral through every touch we have with the patient. This includes a copy of the 2-page compliance reports containing our Download on Demand® data and a copy of the notes made by our clinician during a call. Farewell to a special colleague Star News reporter Janette Williams - We'll miss you Janette Lamb Williams, for 22 years a popular reporter and editor for the Pasadena Star-News, died unexpectedly at her Monrovia home recently. She was 68. "The Star-News lost both its heart and its soul" with Williams' death, Editor Frank Girardot said. "It is a truly devastating blow to all of us who know and loved Janette." “Williams, a native of Scotland, began her journalistic career at British newspapers including the Paisley Daily Express, once interviewing the nascent Rolling Stones in the early 1960s. When she and her husband, the late Brian Williams, moved to Canada and then the United States in the 1980s as part of his work with international engineering firms, she put her journalism on

hold while her two children, Andrew and Fiona, were young. But when the family settled in Arcadia, Williams

began writing for a chain of weeklies owned by the StarNews in 1991, and soon was promoted to the daily paper. Over more than two decades at the Star-News, she covered essentially every beat the pa-

per has, from crime to city halls to high culture. She was promoted to city editor, and also worked on the city desk of sister paper the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, before returning to writing in recent years, mainly covering local cultural institutions including the Huntington Library and the Norton Simon Museum.” The newspaper said. “We often would see Williams on assignment at all sorts of events” said Beacon Media photographer Terry Miller. “She was always delightful and usually had a bloody funny story to tell… usually off the record.” “We shared a similar heritage both being from the UK, I’ll miss her smile, sense of humour and genuine concern for her fellow man.” Miller concluded.

EPA selects UCLA to help improve public health data and research EPA announced today its selection of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as an academic partner for the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) University Challenge, a project designed to find innovative ways to increase public awareness of toxic chemical releases in their communities and around the country. UCLA is one of eight diverse academic institutions selection nationwide. TRI provides communities with information about toxic chemical releases to the air, water, and land and helps industry, government, nongovernmental organizations, and the public make more informed decisions to protect their health and environment. UCLA’s project seeks to advance the knowledge, use and understanding of TRI data to promote more informed decision-making and action on the part of communities and manufacturers. The project will include the development of a robust ranking methodology of manufacturing facilities in the Greater Los Angeles Area. Clarification on an incident in Sierra Madre Continued from page 8

ly understands that.” Here is what actually happened: Beacon wordsmith Shel Segal was assigned to do a story on the Sierra Madre Water crisis and assigned to interview the city manager to uncover what really is going on. The day Segal telephoned the city manager for the interview, it became apparent that the conference should take place in person and that said meeting be recorded ( at Elaine Aguilar’s suggestion) as there is a wealth of information to pass on. They agreed to a dialogue the following week ( i.e. Tuesday) and that Segal would, in fact, record the interview. After hanging up the phone with Elaine Aguilar last week, Segal immediately called me to let me know he couldn’t really interview Elaine on the ‘phone and that he was going to reschedule and record the interview. The timing that particular day was bad for both Segal and Aguilar. Segal called the of-

fice directly after an Angels game and it was very noisy. I had trouble hearing Segal and thus grossly misconstrued what he was trying to tell me. I assumed I heard that the city manager did not want to be recorded. This, of course, was erroneous, a critical error on my part. However, to add insult to injury, I mentioned this ( in passing ) to a resident with whom I have been speaking about the water problems Sierra Madre is facing. In doing so, apparently said resident helped create a bit of a buzz in the local blog world. Well, before you know it I get a call from John Crawford on Sunday who had posted the aforementioned ditty referring, of course, to the use of a tape recorder which was never even an issue. It was a MY oversight, an error - a human faux pas - which leads me to believe I’ll have to listen much more carefully and say considerably less to people on the ‘phone. Sincere apologies to Sierra Madre City Man-

ager, Elaine Aguliar, for the misunderstanding for which I am solely responsible. I hold no blame to our friends over at Sierra Madre Tattler as John Crawford has done a huge amount of excellent research on the water and UTT issues for some time now. He was merely following up on what seemed like a rather good story due to my blunder and apparent hearing problem. Had any of the story been true, it would have made front page news, I assure you. Again, apologies to anyone else who was involved in the obvious case of he said/she said/they didn’t say/what did he say?…..and so on down the line. Mostly, however, a personal expression of regret to Elaine Aguilar for setting the wheels in motion for a fictional story that got completely out of hand. Perhaps I’ll have to get an ear trumpet next time someone calls me from an Angels game.

Trustee Notices NOTICE OF TRUSTEE’S SALE TS No. 12-0051142 Title Order No. 11-6-103412 APN No. 8622-014-005 YOU ARE IN DEFAULT UNDER A DEED OF TRUST, DATED 10/14/2009. UNLESS YOU TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY, IT MAY BE SOLD AT A PUBLIC SALE. IF YOU NEED AN EXPLANATION OF THE NATURE OF THE PROCEEDING AGAINST YOU, YOU SHOULD CONTACT A LAWYER. Notice is hereby given that RECONTRUST COMPANY, N.A., as duly appointed trustee pursuant to the Deed of Trust executed by ALEJANDRA CONTRERAS AND AURELIO CONTRERAS, WIFE AND HUSBAND AS JOINT TENANTS, dated 10/14/2009 and recorded 10/26/2009, as Instrument No. 20091611975, in Book N/A, Page N/A, of Official Records in the office of the County Recorder of Los Angeles County, State of California, will sell on 08/22/2013 at 9:00AM, Doubletree Hotel Los Angeles-Norwalk, 13111 Sycamore Drive, Norwalk, CA 90650, Vineyard Ballroom at public auction, to the highest bidder for cash or check as described below, payable in full at time of sale, all right, title, and interest conveyed to and now held by it under said Deed of Trust, in the property situated in said County and State and as more fully described in the above referenced Deed of Trust. The street address and other common designation, if any, of the real property described above is purported to be: 18213 EAST WOODCROFT STREET, AZUSA, CA, 91702. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address and other common designation, if any, shown herein. The total amount of the unpaid balance with interest thereon of the obligation secured by the property to be sold plus reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $315,103.19. It is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total indebtedness due. In addition to cash, the Trustee will accept cashier’s checks drawn on a state or national bank, a check drawn by a state or federal credit union, or a check drawn by a state or federal savings and loan association, savings association, or savings bank specified in Section 5102 of the Financial Code and authorized to do business in this state. Said sale will be made, in an ‘’AS IS’’ condition, but without covenant or warranty, express or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to satisfy the indebtedness secured by said Deed of Trust, advances thereunder, with interest as provided, and the unpaid principal of the Note secured by said Deed of Trust with interest thereon as provided in said Note, plus fees, charges and expenses of the Trustee and of the trusts created by said Deed of Trust. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on a property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil

Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 1-800-281-8219 or visit this Internet Web site www.recontrustco.com, using the file number assigned to this case 12-0051142. and will give a preview of the upcoming water and sewer rate study. And the fifth and final meeting will be 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 10 in council chambers and will present highlights from the first four meetings. Aguilar said that while the rate and the conservation issues are separate, they have hit Sierra Madre at the same time. “It’s a perfect storm,” she said. “There’s water conservation and the need for water conservation. The second piece would be the water rate study

that we’re in the process of drafting. Each of the sessions is a different topic. That will pertain mainly to water rates, but conservation will be a part of that.” Aguilar added most people do not think of where their water comes from. “When it comes to water conservation I think that a lot of folks take it for granted,” she said. “There’s not a lot of thought where the water comes from when it comes out. It’s automatic. We’re used to that. Our goal is to keep that, so when you

go to your facet or to take a shower or cook dinner you’ve got water coming out of your tap.” In addition, Aguilar said the city of Sierra Madre is in a unique situation from the get-go. “Sierra Madre gets 90 percent of its water from groundwater, from aquifers that lie underneath the city,” Aguilar said. “It’s not so common in this area to be so heavily dependent on groundwater. Other cities have more than one source of water. We have primarily one source of water.”
