During a Metropolitan Transportation Authority board meeting discussing whether to allow tunneling under Beverly Hills High School for the Westside subway recently our illustrious conservative County supervisor Michael Antonovich (who also likes to be called Mayor) apparently affronted one of the most respected experts in the field of Seismology at CalTech. Seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, who is perhaps the most quoted of experts when we have a temblor anywhere in the world, has testified in favor of that subway. “She is not a trained geologist, she is a seismologist,” Antonovich said. “It’s akin to asking the weather girl for advice on how to secure your home during a hurricane.” Antonovich was apparently on a roll and continued: “This sounds like a perfect example of finding so-called experts who will behave as trained seals,” Antonovich said. “There is a cottage industry of people who go around and appear on TV. The sad thing is, that when these things fail, it is the taxpayers left holding the bag.” With a Ph.D. in geophysics from MIT, Lucy Jones is hardly what we’d call a “weather girl” Mr. Antonovich. And, in fact, she is rather an expert in geophysics and seismology of worldwide world-wide repute.

In their defense: Tony Bell, Mike Antonovich provided me this information regarding the matter when I asked for comment: “This issue is about MTA staff discrediting Beverly Hills’ legitimate concerns with a panel of experts that appeared to be speaking outside of their licensed areas of expertise. The supervisor made a motion to take the responsible action when faced with differences of scientific opinion -- elevate the matter to the California Geological Survey, the recognized authority in the state on these issues, and seek a neutral, authoritative, third-party opinion to help the MTA Board make an informed decision based on vetted scientific evidence and analysis. This motion was voted down by the subway advocates on the Board who seek to ram the subway through the City of Beverly Hills despite their strong objections based on the findings of their state-licensed scientific experts. These pro-subway forces are promoting this massive, multi-billion dollar excavation plan that will likely have major cost overruns like the Red Line subway had, which will significantly drain vital countywide resources away from transportation projects that serve the San Gabriel Valley and our effort to develop a regional, inter-model plan to improve mobility.“

For our readers here is a rundown of Dr. Jones qualifications: Dr. Lucy Jones has been a seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey since 1983 where she currently serves as the Science Advisor for Natural Hazards. Her expertise is highly regarded and she often speaks publicly and with authority about southern CA seismic hazards. Currently, Dr. Jones leads the Science Application for Risk Reduction Project (SAFRR). This project applies USGS science to reduce natural hazard risks in communities across the Nation. You can learn more about it at http:// www.usgs.gov/blogs/features/ usgs_top_story/usgs-naturalhazards-risk-reduction-project-goes-national/ Dr. Jones received a Ph.D. in geophysics from MIT in 1981 and has authored over 90 papers on research seismology, specializing in southern California. She has received numerous awards, and created and led several innovative projects that help communities understand, prepare for, and respond to natural hazards. Dr. Jones is not a paid consultant for the Independent Review Panel. She is doing that as part of her job as a career, federal employee for the U.S. Geological Survey.
