Sustainability As designers and engineers we continue to strive to create buildings that are sustainable, inclusive, flexible, support change, provide choice, embrace daylight, and offer good air and green space. We recognise that we are humans, that we have feelings and need meaningful contact with the elements and with one another to thrive.



BIM Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology represents the biggest change to the construction industry since computers were introduced. BDP was the first architectural practice to be accredited to BIM Level 2, we developed the BIM Digital Toolkit for the British government and hold BSI certification. All our design team are Revit users, and as a practice, we have extensive experience built up over more than a decade of use. We are now utilising BIM tools to go beyond the traditional design role, providing value to clients by looking forward to occupation with integrate ‘Day 2’ data for soft landings and supporting Facilities Management operation.

Following the agile workplace strategy introduced in PwC Manchester, the One Chamberlain Square offices provide a total of nine floors over 156,000sqft. We introduced a carefully considered mix of workspaces for collaboration, quiet time and presentations, in close proximity; gone are the zones of break-out and work area; instead an eclectic mix of different settings, balanced across practice floors, making the best use of natural light and quiet corners.

House of Cool ID

House of Cool, an animation company with a unique niche in digital storyboards, lives up to its name in their new home at the Toronto Waterfront Daniels City of the Arts. The space is bright and inviting with a tongue-in-cheek ‘house’ design feature at the heart of the studio that houses their kitchen and entertainment space. The family-room comfort and quirky touches are mixed with highly functional and flexible furnishings throughout the studio to respond to their project work flow.

We are delivering the vision for a new office headquarters and laboratory complex for 2,000 employees to support AstraZeneca’s drive for scientific leadership and best practice in low energy laboratory design. The BREEAM Excellent design encourages collaborative working across the organisation and provides easy access for the wider scientific community through an open campus environment.

Cambridge Assessment headquarters provides office accommodation for 3,000 staff and has the adaptability to facilitate the business’ expected growth of 25% – with office spaces, restaurants, coffee bars, a library and resource centre, flexible conference and auditorium facilities, wellbeing facilities and over 100 meeting rooms of varying sizes. The project involved a Cat A and B fit-out, full furniture, furnishings, and equipment design as well as shell and core coordination.

PwC Belfast – Merchant Square GD

Design for fit-out of the new 200,000 sq ft nine floor workplace building for PwC Belfast. Relocating them from their existing premises to the new building at Merchant Square. The building is an amalgamation of three existing structures with a dramatic feature staircase linking floors 4, 5 & 6 connecting the 5th floor restaurant, Wellness Area & Co-Working to practice space.

The first wholly owned and designed Google building outside of the United States, provides 1 million sqft of purpose-built space and combined with its current building at 6 Pancras Square, and an additional third building, will create a Google campus. We are lead consultant, design delivery architect, lighting and interior designer, and workplace planner, working with concept architects Heatherwick Studio and Bjarke Ingels Group to deliver the scheme.

PwC Frontier is a client facing hybrid of laboratory, office, and collaboration space, offering an experience centre that brings together business strategy, digital technology, customer experience and design. A series of interconnected spaces incorporates a virtual reality lab in which users can engage and test strategies through technology alongside a high spec studio office, and an adaptable open plan space. Its flexible environment is inspired by home, work and play.

A 1980s office development near St Katharine Docks required upgrades to its principal office building and public realm. The main reception area was remodelled, and incorporates a new double height stainless steel entrance portico, a large reception with feature audio visual system, business lounge and coffee shop. The upper floors were refurbished to create grade A commercial space. The public realm was remodelled to provide new access routes, raised levels, planting, seating and lighting.

A new north of London office destination, considered the company’s first biophilic office with an immersive garden floor; the welcoming interior features relaxed living spaces that evoke a feel-good factor where wellbeing, community connectivity and an inclusive flexible agile environment play a central role.

The refurbishment of a 1980s office building in the City of London includes work on its external façade and the creation of a semi-public ground floor space and a rooftop extension with terrace, opening up the roof level and offering views across the city. The scheme features an innovative structural glazing system on the ground floor, new lifts and core reconfiguration, prefabricated bathroom systems, and flexible ceiling-less office space.

Refurbishment of PwC client lounge by using net zero as a driver. The sustainability formula ‘Build less, build clever, design for adaptability & disassembly’ allows the newly designed interior to be disassembled and relocated to other PwC locations with less of a carbon footprint. This Refurbishment was the amalgamation of retaining existing features, refreshing, and improving functionality of a multifunctional space with a strong narrative related to location and history, therefore creating a distinctive space.

PwC’s Manchester office spreads across four floors of the One Spinningfields building and provides collaborative workspace, flexible meeting pods, a feature staircase with ‘Spanish steps’ style seating, a café and three roof terraces. A strong Manchester identity is conveyed throughout, with its topography, industrial heritage and bee symbolism inspiring the aesthetic.

Our design team held a pivotal role in the collaboration process of this job, working closely from the outset with PwC, the developer and its team including the architect Foster and Partners. The first building in London to achieve BREEAM Outstanding it includes environmental innovations such as the use of 80% recycled aggregate within the concrete used, and recycling of waste heat to cool and warm the building.

The new headquarters for a growing, designfocused development client encompasses the full second floor of a restored art deco heritage building with stairs leading down to a “sunken living room” amenity space for staff with games, a gym and showers. Vintage lighting and furniture pieces, factory-style steel screens, and a green marble reception desk recall the art deco style of the building with a modern twist.

A fit-out project across the top three floors and ground floor reception of a new office building for more than 300 Eversheds Sutherland staff. The offices will meet the high demands of today’s workforce for health, wellbeing and workplace quality, as major factors in job satisfaction and retention. Our design will allow the law firm to work in a more agile way while also factoring in future growth.

One Angel Square enabled Northamptonshire City Council’s workforce to relocate from 12 separate properties into one BREEAM Excellent headquarters building. The brief required a flexible office to accommodate 2,000 employees and established a building that encourages collaboration and new ways of working for improved productivity, as well as serving as a catalyst for wider urban regeneration.

With increasing demand on the utilisation of its internal infrastructure BDP was asked to provide a new strategy to relieve the current flow of staff and client traffic using the first floor facilities. The installation of two new escalators provide access at street level through to a new concourse at first floor providing a new entrance. The existing client lounge and support spaces have been completely re-imagined providing an enhanced facility for guests and staff.

This office refurbishment project refocused the central atrium to become a new destination at the heart of the workplace, with a new concierge reception and improved connectivity. A prominent entrance is created underneath the arches of the original station facade. The project provides 22,000 sqft of Category A office space, along with the redesign and refurbishment of common facility areas. A comprehensive rebranding exercise including wayfinding signage was also delivered in the scheme.

64 Victoria is a 22 storey 1960s office tower that has been comprehensively refurbished with a new aesthetic and modern environment. Work included stripping the building’s concrete frame, cleaning stonework, installing new windows, maximising the ground floor glazing and opening up the entrance. The central core was remodelled and double-decker lifts were introduced, enabling densification of the workplace which is a first for a refurbishment project.

The Bright Building, at the centre of Manchester Science Park, is the first element of our masterplan and sets the standard for new development within the Manchester Science Partnerships’ portfolio. The BREEAM Excellent building provides a flexible office and low level laboratory accommodation over four floors set around a central collaborative hub, as well as café and restaurant facilities, a gym, meeting spaces, conferencing and networking spaces.

The next generation infrastructure brings scientists together into multidisciplinary houses creating a ‘collaboratory’ of wet and dry science activities across chemistry, biology, physics and ecology to better understand plant and microbial phenotypes and how they impact on the evolution of plant genetics and development. Views into laboratories, glasshouses and other working spaces present a cross-section of the activities taking place.

Launchpad is a first-of-its-kind incubator where creative entrepreneurs can learn the skills and create the work to launch their careers, providing affordable access to equipment, programming and an environment that fosters collaboration. With over 90 distinct rooms that each have their own unique feel, the space is amongst the most complex assembly occupancies in Toronto and features wood, jewellery, prototyping and fashion workshops, high-tech media labs, meeting, event and social spaces.

A tired 1980s office building has been transformed into the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s headquarters to encourage collaboration and public engagement. The society’s museum of pharmacy collection is on display on the ground floor and leads to a 120 seat lecture theatre, feature staircase and new atrium which was created from an existing lightwell. Externally the reclad façade visually enhances the building and improves its environmental and acoustic performance.

The first off-campus outpost for OCAD University, OCAD U CO is an all-in-one design research lab and design-thinking facilitation and training space that features four large innovation studios, an open plan transit space, private niches and meeting spaces to suit any project’s needs. The design echoes the Sharp Centre for Design, visually linking the project to OCAD’s strong brand identity.

Deluxe occupies a three-storey space in a renovated 1990s data centre that contains open concept workspaces, a welcoming atrium and highly specialized post-production facilities for movies and videos. Boasting a custom private cinema for client screenings on the top floor, Deluxe exemplifies how an underused office building can be tailored to accommodate even the most unusual and specialised clients.

In stark contrast to the widely accepted design principle of the democratization of light, Stereo D is a 3D conversion studio with open work spaces that need to be nearly dark to facilitate rendering. Utilizing the industrial bones of the former Canada Bread Factory, cool, comfortable communal spaces were created to help staff decompress, reconnect and recharge their creativity.

Rogers Centre of Excellence (COE) consolidates master control facilities for television, special events and radio networks into a non-traditional open plan design. The master control area is the focus of the facility with support spaces located on the periphery. The open plan permits “follow me monitoring”, allowing staff the ability to monitor various signals from anywhere in the space, and can be customized to support special programming events without affecting the day to day operations of the facility.

Consolidating many dispersed Corus offices into a single space, Corus Quay features complex technical areas, barrier-free design and a LEED designation, all while reflecting the style and personality of the company’s brand. Corus Entertainment’s headquarters is an award-winning space that incorporates facets of wellness and fun with practicality and feasibility. It is a beautiful space that facilitates its high-tech function, all the while being sustainable and accessible.

Renovation of this five-storey building creating a visually engaging focal point for one of Toronto’s most vibrant and intense urban meeting places. The Rogers Broadcast Centre incorporates a street-level studio and broadcast space for the open, interactive style of programming pioneered by Citytv.

In the new CBC/Radio-Canada media centre, creators and programmers work within modern and versatile spaces which support the collaborative workplace strategy of the digital, multiplatform public broadcaster. The building features clear and simple wayfinding that connects its programmes around a central, sky-lit atrium, providing natural light on all floors.

When Canadian telecom giant Rogers Communications moved to consolidate their Sportsnet studios at their main campus in downtown Toronto, BDP Quadrangle designed a new space dedicated to the iconic Hockey Night in Canada programming. The design team adapted space in the existing heritage building to suit the needs of a television studio, which included strategic interventions such as maximizing ceiling height, levelling the floor slab, and adding an internal acoustic barrier along the exterior façade to both assist lighting control and block noise infiltration from the busy urban street outside.

Heritage

Historic buildings present many complexities. We respect the sensitivities involved yet still deliver innovative and far-reaching projects. Our heritage teams have undertaken the complex refurbishment of internationally renowned theatres, concert halls, museums and other cultural institutions. We have succeeded in preserving and enhancing their character whilst discreetly adapting them, functionally and technically, to make them truly fit for purpose in the 21st century.

Phased refurbishment and consolidation of the University’s estate. Library accommodation formerly spread over eight locations, has been centralised in the Grade II* listed Senate House, which has increased the number of books it can hold. New meeting and teaching accommodation has also been created.

The refurbishment and creative adaptation of the Grade II listed Old Admiralty required extensive engagement with Historic England, due to its significant history including offices once occupied by Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming. Now home to over 1,600 staff, work included reordering the building and repairing its external fabric. The interiors have been opened up to create 24,000 sqm of flexible workspace. Cellular spaces are linked within the historic building to increase connectivity.

A glass circulation addition punctuated by two 13m tall Corten steel clad volumes that glow like lanterns at night transforms this hybrid of office, retail and gathering spot. The interiors embrace the site’s history with an enlarged Goad’s Fire Atlas wall graphic, while a supergraphic ‘60’ on the exterior by artist Pascal Paquette gives the building a bold identity. The design highlights both old and new with contrasting brick that patch openings and castiron floor plates that knit together the two formerly separate buildings and carriageway between.

Our masterplan maximises their use and secures their conservation and repair for the long term, creating efficient, accessible and sustainable modern facilities.

The Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal Programme has been established to tackle the significant work that needs to be done to protect and preserve the heritage of the Palace of Westminster and ensure it can continue to serve as home to the UK parliament in the 21st century. The Grade I listed palace dates from the mid-1800s and is now one of the most iconic and significant buildings in the world, and forms part of the UNESCO Westminster World Heritage Site.

The Artists Bar, currently located in the B1 backstage corridor, is being relocated to the old B2 level boiler house once the new basement boiler house has been constructed and commissioned. The intent is to create a highly attractive space, sympathetic to the Hall’s heritage and to the original use of the space as a boiler house. The design makes reference to the previous use of the space as a boiler house and highlights the original brick vaulted ceiling and other original features.

Healthcare buildings are the places where many of us will experience life’s most profound events and yet they are also complex technological facilities which have to operate efficiently. Our designs pay close attention to clinical effectiveness and efficiency but they always prioritise people – patients, their visitors and the staff who care for them.

Alder Hey embraces international best practice, providing 21st century clinical functionality within a framework that is efficient and flexible. The therapeutic environment it instills gives visitors and staff A sense of ease and delight through the quality of spaces, views, daylight and interaction.

Completion 2024 The major trauma centre for the region incorporates 361 beds, 65% of which are single ensuite rooms and a helipad, with views over the English Channel. Extensive consultation with local planners and English Heritage resulted in unanimous consent for the design’s sensitive integration into its historic environment.


National Children’s Hospital of Ireland Ar

The largest, most complex and significant capital investment project ever undertaken in healthcare in Ireland, this new landmark building has a distinctive oval design with therapeutic gardens on the roof. A sequence of spaces inside and out enhances children’s freedom of body and mind, creating the optimum environment for care to flourish.

Completion Mar 2014 Phase I, Jul 2016 Phase II A BREEAM Excellent healthcare facility designed around a central, top-lit grand public concourse which simplifies access to medical wards and departments. Naturally ventilated inpatient rooms are organised around a series of landscaped courtyards separate from the core clinical facilities, creating a positive, non-institutional environment.

BDP were commissioned to develop the first 9,000 sqm building an ambitious plan to redevelop the RNOH site on Stanmore Campus. The site was a combination of a green and brownfield land and surrounded by active hospital buildings and roads that are used to treat and transport patients. The new five storey hospital provides 91 single beds, an atrium, children’s playground and landscaped garden.

Completion 2023 The design brief for this world-renowned centre for paediatric care and research was created in partnership with staff, patients and families. A welcoming, active frontage responds to the domestic scale of its context and the ‘lily pad’ winter gardens enhance the inpatient experience, offering views from every bedroom window.

New Covent Garden Market has just got newer; the traders have moved out of the 1970s building half a mile down Nine Elms Lane, and replanted themselves in a bright new premises opposite Battersea Power Station. Our wayfinding has been designed to reflect the visual identity and the vision of the greater development – a new fruit and vegetable market is scheduled to open in 2022.

Under the Flyover is a proposed ‘pop up’ shop and food stall development located under the Magdalen Street flyover in Norwich. The scheme re-uses stripped and refitted 40ft high shipping containers arranged over two floors. BDP created the brand and developed a graphic language that—like the containers themselves—is strong and robust.

Every aspect of the scheme was considered to create a cohesive brand language. BDP designed everything from the suspended lighting cradles, to the typeface, logo and even the clock.

Tonbridge School’s science centre dates back to 1887 and was the first in the country to be purpose built. The wayfinding scheme for the new Barton Science Centre at Tonbridge School, gently combines the sign components with the architectural materials, while also providing up to date and flexible information in key areas. Graphics have been integrated into the library book shelving with each panel highlighting the ground breaking work of iconic scientists in physics, chemistry and biology.

The wayfinding scheme for the new City Campus, has a concept inspired by the curves of the building. As part of an overall design remit we also created super-graphics using bold icons and vibrant colours in order to activate the spaces.

Mivida retail district is part of the Emaar Mivida masterplan and is located on the eastern edge of New Cairo. BDP created a wayfinding strategy by choreographing the entire customer and user experience. Particular attention was paid to the arrival sequence, the amenities or architectural statements that greet the guests, the character and circulation within the project, what events present themselves, what people see, touch and hear, culminating in a cohesive wayfinding strategy, design system and project identity.

One Angel Square is a flexible office space designed to accommodate Northamptonshire City Council’s 2,000 employees. The internal floor plates are arranged along four internal ‘streets’ each zoned by compass point.Along each street, sequentially numbered workspaces and meeting rooms are assigned a letter/number code, created specifically to enable staff to understand and navigate the building easily.
