Following the agile workplace strategy introduced in PwC Manchester, the One Chamberlain Square offices provide a total of 156,000sqft. We introduced a carefully considered mix of workspaces for collaboration, quiet time and presentations, in close proximity; gone are the zones of break-out and work area; instead an eclectic mix of different settings, balanced across practice floors, making the best use of natural light and quiet corners.

House of Cool, an animation company with a unique niche in digital storyboards, lives up to its name in its new home at the Toronto Waterfront Daniels City of the Arts. The space is bright and inviting with a tongue-incheek house design feature at the heart of the studio for the kitchen and entertainment space. The family-room comfort and quirky touches are mixed with highly functional and flexible furnishings throughout the studio to respond to its project work flow.

We are delivering the vision for a new office headquarters and laboratory complex for 2,000 employees to support AstraZeneca’s drive for scientific leadership and best practice in low energy laboratory design. The BREEAM Excellent design encourages collaborative working across the organisation and provides easy access for the wider scientific community through an open campus environment.

Cambridge Assessment headquarters provides office accommodation for 3,000 staff and has the adaptability to facilitate the business’ expected growth of 25% - with office spaces, restaurants, cafes, a library and resource centre, flexible conference and auditorium facilities, wellbeing facilities and over 100 meeting rooms of varying sizes. The project involved a Category A and B fitout, full furniture, furnishings, and equipment design as well as shell and core coordination.

The first wholly owned and designed Google building outside the United States, provides 1 million sqft of purpose-built space and, combined with its current building at 6 Pancras Square and an additional third building, will create a Google campus. We are lead consultant, design delivery architect, lighting and interior designer, and workplace planner, working with concept architects Heatherwick Studio and Bjarke Ingels Group to deliver the scheme.

PwC Frontier is a client facing hybrid of laboratory, office, and collaboration space, offering an experience centre that brings together business strategy, digital technology, customer experience and design. A series of interconnected spaces incorporates a virtual reality lab in which users can engage and test strategies through technology alongside a high spec studio office, and an adaptable open plan space. Its flexible environment is inspired by home, work and play.

A 1980s office development near St Katharine Docks required upgrades to its principal office building and public realm. The main reception area was remodelled, and incorporates a new double height stainless steel entrance portico, a large reception with feature audio visual system, business lounge and coffee shop. The upper floors were refurbished to create grade A commercial space. The public realm was remodelled to provide new access routes, raised levels, planting, seating and lighting.

The refurbishment of a 1980s office building in the City of London includes work on its external faรงade and the creation of a semipublic ground floor space and a rooftop extension with terrace, opening up the roof level and offering views across the city. The scheme features an innovative structural glazing system on the ground floor, new lifts and core reconfiguration, prefabricated bathroom systems, and flexible ceiling-less office space.

PwC’s Manchester office spreads across four floors of the One Spinningfields building and provides collaborative workspace, flexible meeting pods, a feature staircase with Spanish Steps style seating, a cafe and three roof terraces. A strong Manchester identity is conveyed throughout, with its topography, industrial heritage and bee symbolism inspiring the aesthetic.

Our design team held a pivotal role in the collaboration process of this job, working closely from the outset with PwC, the developer and its team including the architect Foster + Partners. The first building in London to achieve BREEAM Outstanding it includes environmental innovations such as the use of 80% recycled aggregate within the concrete used, and recycling of waste heat to cool and warm the building.

Completion 2019 The new headquarters for a growing, designfocused development client encompasses the full second floor of a restored art deco heritage building with stairs leading down to a sunken living room amenity space for staff with games, a gym and showers. Vintage lighting and furniture pieces, factory-style steel screens, and a green marble reception desk recall the art deco style of the building with a modern twist.

One Angel Square enabled Northamptonshire City Council’s workforce to relocate from 12 separate properties into one BREEAM Excellent headquarters building. The brief required a flexible office to accommodate 2,000 employees and established a building that encourages collaboration and new ways of working for improved productivity, as well as serving as a catalyst for wider urban regeneration.

We are designing the fit-out across the top three floors and ground floor reception of a new office building for more than 300 Eversheds Sutherland staff. The offices will meet the high demands of today’s workforce for health, wellbeing and workplace quality, as major factors in job satisfaction and retention. Our design will allow the law firm to work in a more agile way while also factoring in future growth.

This office refurbishment project refocused the central atrium to become a new destination at the heart of the workplace, with a new concierge reception and improved connectivity. A prominent entrance is created underneath the arches of the original station facade. The project provides 22,000 sqft of Category A office space, along with the redesign and refurbishment of common facility areas. A comprehensive rebranding exercise including wayfinding signage was also delivered in the scheme.

64 Victoria is a 22 storey 1960s office tower that has been comprehensively refurbished with a new aesthetic and modern environment. Work included stripping the building’s concrete frame, cleaning stonework, installing new windows, maximising the ground floor glazing and opening up the entrance. The central core was remodelled and double-decker lifts were introduced, enabling densification of the workplace which is a first for a refurbishment project.

The Bright Building, at the centre of Manchester Science Park, is the first element of our masterplan and sets the standard for new development within the Manchester Science Partnerships’ portfolio. The BREEAM Excellent building provides a flexible office and low level laboratory accommodation over four floors set around a central collaborative hub, as well as café and restaurant facilities, a gym, meeting spaces, conferencing and networking spaces.

The next generation infrastructure brings scientists together into multidisciplinary houses creating a ‘collaboratory’ of wet and dry science activities across chemistry, biology, physics and ecology to better understand plant and microbial phenotypes and how they impact on the evolution of plant genetics and development. Views into laboratories, glasshouses and other working spaces present a cross-section of the activities taking place.

Launchpad is a first of its kind incubator where creative entrepreneurs can learn the skills and create the work to launch their careers, providing affordable access to equipment, programming and an environment that fosters collaboration. With over 90 distinct rooms that each have their own unique feel, the space is amongst the most complex assembly occupancies in Toronto and features wood, jewellery, prototyping and fashion workshops, high-tech media labs, meeting, event and social spaces.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society Location London, UK

A tired 1980s office building has been transformed into the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s headquarters to encourage collaboration and public engagement. The society’s museum of pharmacy collection is on display on the ground floor and leads to a 120 seat lecture theatre, feature staircase and new atrium which was created from an existing lightwell. Externally the reclad façade visually enhances the building and improves its environmental and acoustic performance.

The first off-campus outpost for OCAD University, OCAD U CO is an all in one design research lab and design-thinking facilitation and training space that features four large innovation studios, an open plan transit space, private niches and meeting spaces to suit any project’s needs. The design echoes the Sharp Centre for Design, visually linking the project to OCAD’s strong brand identity.

Deluxe occupies a three-storey space in a renovated 1990s data centre that contains open concept workspaces, a welcoming atrium and highly specialised post-production facilities for movies and videos. Boasting a custom private cinema for client screenings on the top floor, Deluxe exemplifies how an underused office building can be tailored to accommodate even the most unusual and specialised clients.

In stark contrast to the widely accepted design principle of the democratisation of light, Stereo D is a 3D conversion studio with open work spaces that need to be nearly dark to facilitate rendering. Utilising the industrial bones of the former Canada Bread Factory, cool, comfortable communal spaces were created to help staff decompress, reconnect and recharge their creativity.

Rogers Centre of Excellence (COE) consolidates master control facilities for television, special events and radio networks into a non-traditional open plan design. The master control area is the focus of the facility with support spaces located on the periphery. The open plan permits ‘follow me monitoring’, allowing staff the ability to monitor various signals from anywhere in the space, and can be customised to support special programming events without affecting the day to day operations of the facility.

Consolidating many dispersed Corus offices into a single space, Corus Quay features complex technical areas, barrier-free design and a LEED designation, all while reflecting the style and personality of the company’s brand. Corus Entertainment’s headquarters is an award-winning space that incorporates facets of wellness and fun with practicality and feasibility. It is a beautiful space that facilitates its high-tech function, all the while being sustainable and accessible.

Renovation of this five-storey building created a visually engaging focal point for one of Toronto’s most vibrant and intense urban meeting places. The Rogers Broadcast Centre incorporates a street-level studio and broadcast space for the open, interactive style of programming pioneered by Citytv.

In the new CBC/Radio-Canada media centre, creators and programmers work within modern and versatile spaces which support the collaborative workplace strategy of the digital, multiplatform public broadcaster. The building features clear and simple wayfinding that connects its programmes around a central, sky-lit atrium, providing natural light on all floors.

Historic buildings present many complexities. We respect the sensitivities involved yet still deliver innovative and farreaching projects. Our heritage teams have undertaken the complex refurbishment of internationally renowned theatres, concert halls, museums and other cultural institutions. We have succeeded in preserving and enhancing their character whilst discreetly adapting them, functionally and technically, to make them truly fit for purpose in the 21st century.

This is a phased refurbishment and consolidation of the University’s estate. Library accommodation formerly spread over eight locations, has been centralised in the Grade II* listed Senate House, which has increased the number of books it can hold. New meeting and teaching accommodation has also been created.

A glass circulation addition, punctuated by two 13m tall Corten steel clad volumes that glow like lanterns at night, transforms this hybrid of office, retail and gathering spot. The interiors embrace the site’s history with an enlarged Goad’s Fire Atlas wall graphic, while a supergraphic ‘60’ on the exterior by artist Pascal Paquette gives the building a bold identity. The design highlights both old and new with contrasting brick that patch openings and castiron floor plates that knit together the two formerly separate buildings and carriageway between.

Our masterplan maximises their use and secures their conservation and repair for the long term, creating efficient, accessible and sustainable modern facilities.

National Army Museum Location London, UK

Our design for the refurbishment of the museum included reorganising the public realm and the entrance to the building, creating a stronger identity within the streetscape. A radical reordering of the interior created an atrium space which visually and physically links all floor areas and elements of accommodation and opens up views into and out of the museum.

Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal Location London, UK Client Houses of Parliament

The Palace of Westminster Restoration and Renewal Programme has been established to tackle the significant work that needs to be done to protect and preserve the heritage of the Palace of Westminster and ensure it can continue to serve as home to the UK parliament in the 21st century. The Grade I listed palace dates from the mid-1800s and is now one of the most iconic and significant buildings in the world, and forms part of the UNESCO Westminster World Heritage Site.

Royal Albert Hall, Artists’ Bar Location London, UK

The Artists’ Bar, currently located in a backstage corridor, is being relocated to the old boiler house once the new one has been constructed and commissioned. The intent is to create a highly attractive space, sympathetic to the Hall’s heritage and to the original use of the space as a boiler house. The design references the previous use of the space as a boiler house and highlights the original brick vaulted ceiling and other original features.

Healthcare buildings are the places where many of us will experience life’s most profound events and yet they are also complex technological facilities which have to operate efficiently. Alder Hey embraces international best practice, providing 21st century clinical functionality within a framework that is efficient and flexible. The therapeutic environment it instills gives visitors and staff a sense of ease and delight through the quality of spaces, views, daylight and interaction.

Completion 2024 The major trauma centre for the region incorporates 361 beds, 65% of which are single ensuite rooms and a helipad, with views over the English Channel. Extensive consultation with local planners and English Heritage resulted in unanimous consent for the design’s sensitive integration into its historic environment.

National Children’s Hospital of Ireland Location Dublin, Ireland

The largest, most complex and significant capital investment project ever undertaken in healthcare in Ireland, Client this new landmark building has a National Paediatric Hospital Development distinctive oval design with therapeutic gardens on the roof. Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital Location Bristol, UK Client Carillion for North Bristol NHS Trust Cost ÂŁ430m Completion March 2014 Phase I July 2016 Phase II A BREEAM Excellent healthcare facility designed around a central, top-lit grand public concourse simplifies access to medical wards and departments. Naturally ventilated inpatient rooms are organised around a series of landscaped courtyards separate from the core clinical facilities, creating a positive, noninstitutional environment.

Completion 2022 The spectacular cancer hospital in the heart of Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter delivers a wide range of highly-specialist cancer care including pioneering chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy and radiotherapy. The 11-storey building incorporates 110 fully-single ensuite patient bedrooms and five radiotherapy Linac treatment suites, stepping back in profile at its upper levels to create external terrace spaces for wards, especially for the chemotherapy floor.

We were commissioned to develop the first 9,000 sqm building of an ambitious plan to redevelop the RNOH site on Stanmore Campus. The site was a combination of a green and brownfield land and surrounded by active hospital buildings and roads that are used to treat and transport patients. The new five storey hospital provides 91 single beds, an atrium, children’s playground and landscaped garden.

Completion 2023 The design brief for this world-renowned centre for paediatric care and research was created in partnership with staff, patients and families. A welcoming, active frontage responds to the domestic scale of its context and the ‘lily pad’ winter gardens enhance the inpatient experience, offering views from every bedroom window.

The client is a leading private healthcare provider in Germany specialising in back and spinal care. The new 6,500sqm hospital facility incorporates three laminar airflow operating theatres, recovery wards, MRI and CT diagnostic equipment, consultation rooms, a gymnasium providing physiotherapy treatments and 40 luxury bedrooms split over eight floors.

Completion 2022 This design is for a new cancer centre on the Royal Marsden’s existing estate in Sutton. Relocating services from their existing location on the estate, the new building contains outpatients, rapid diagnostics, day care, clinical assessment, a research centre, endoscopy and a staff cafe/restaurant that will be accessible to all staff on site.

This new flagship education facility enables and encourages modern teaching and learning methodology. The building is IT and audio visual-rich, with excellent access for students with a diverse range of needs and preferences. It provides a variety of collaborative and informal open access learning spaces with two large lecture theatres.

The new campus includes a STEM subject focus, with the integration of the Grade II listed Oddfellows Hall, and adaptable and collaborative learning spaces. The development promotes intensive user engagement and efficient use of space.

American School of Paris Location Paris, France

Completion 2018 This is a competition winning scheme for a new school campus. The design explores ways the site can be developed to provide a great 21st century learning environment. It celebrates the wonderful parkland setting at Saint-Cloud, in the western suburbs of Paris, and maximises the use of buildings and landscape to enrich the learning experience.

Set over two floors, the school is organised around a central atrium, which contains interactive zones including science, performance, music, technology, library, art, storytelling and play. An intentionally calming internal environment has been designed to accommodate sensory difference. It has a learning lab fitted with curiosity cabinets, modular furniture and smart screen technology.

Completion 2022 Sheffield Hallam University campus masterplan is placed at the heart of the city and is a single, sustainable and flexible campus. New ways of learning and working are supported by providing the right type of spaces in the right places to promote interdisciplinary collaboration across departments and with partners. It aims to make the university more outward facing giving it a new identity, showcasing its excellence in teaching and research whilst providing it with opportunities to engage more directly with the Sheffield city region.

UCL Make Space Location London, UK

This is a conversion fit-out project for a space which was previously used as a delivery bay. The space is designed to be used by students, the faculty and the wider academic community to support extracurricular projects and interests, and to provide support for projects as part of the curriculum. At the heart of the project is the Materials Library – a growing repository of some of the most extraordinary materials on earth, gathered together for their ability to fire the imagination and advance conceptualisation.

Our design for the new Alliance Business School at the University of Manchester remodels two conjoined buildings from the 1970s, to provide the university with facilities to match its international reputation. The remodelling creates an uplifting and appropriately scaled entrance which was previously lacking and from this a simple axial route, overlooking three open courtyards, rises steadily through the building, resolving a previously barely navigable series of corridors and stair cores.

The new flagship city centre community campus is for one of the largest colleges in Wales serving Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan. Its distinctive wedge shape connects the interior spaces to south facing terraces with views towards Cardiff Bay. The over-sailing roof is angled to accommodate a 1,850 sqm photovoltaic array, and the fine dining sky restaurant is located under the northernmost tip with views across the city towards the Millennium Stadium.

Barton Science Centre

Completion 2018 This is a refurbishment and extension of the historically significant 1894 Science Building at Tonbridge School. The building is set within the heart of the castle conservation area and adjoins the main historic buildings of the school. The design creates a central heart space within the existing structure and provides a new exciting wing, promoting cross-curriculum collaboration and a flexible area to be used to host a wide range of events and activities.

The interiors of Gallery Square, part of the larger Downtown Markham masterplan, will incorporate art in all aspects of the project from the sports court floor graphics that are visible from the suites above, to the furniture, to framing suite entries. This residential building is also targeting LEED Silver and features larger than usual two and threebedroom suites, and luxury townhouses.

A long stretch of amenities along the street level inspired a white crystalline sculpture that runs the length of the building. Cave-like pockets of activity hold different amenities, giving practical value to what is an impressive sight for residents, guests and passersby from the outside.

Abeja District

This residential development subverts expectations of a typical suburban block typology by establishing a series of interconnected public and semi-public spaces that connect the interior of the development to the street level. The built form is three towers between 25-30 storeys on a shared podium, containing community uses and retail at grade, with the tower expression designed to draw upon the contrast between the fastpaced external environment and the intimate neighbourhood within.

Quadrangle provides retail roll-out services for Lululemon stores across North America. The original Yorkdale Shopping Centre location won awards for its eye-catching and innovative storefront fashioned from over 20 types of recycled wood, reflecting a focus on sustainability and nature. Relocated and refurbished with new glass detailing in 2016, this store exemplifies how a brand’s identity can be both reinforced and reinvented through inspired design.

Completion 2017 The Westgate masterplan is based on a group of individually designed blocks which define the public streets and spaces. Covered streets open onto the surrounding streets of Oxford, providing a protected route leading from the existing high street to a new John Lewis store. The east-west lanes pass through the development, forming connections between the Castle Quarter and adjacent colleges and between adjacent residential areas on either side of the site.

The Samsung Experience Store represented its sixth, largest and most immersive Samsung Experience Store in Canada to date, and ushered in a new era of retail excellence for Samsung’s Canadian operations. The two-storey, 21,000 sqft store features a fluid, contemporary design created to enhance the retail experience and delight visitors through innovative, hands-on participation.

Underline Fashion Space Mega Teply Stan Location Moscow, Russia Client Ingka Centres Cost Confidential Completion 2017

This is an avant-garde fashion space in a former retail unit and car park. This project is experimental in its design as it needed to naturally traverse workplace, hospitality, retail and exhibition while accommodating current and emerging technologies. The concept is designed to engage with emerging experimental online fashion brands who want to establish pop-up stores, engage with clients and have a strong physical presence whilst retaining the integrity of the existing architectural space.

Completion 2015 This was a new flagship showroom for prestige Italian furniture brand Poltrona Frau. Designed to a blueprint by leading French designer Jean-Marie Massaud the new showroom is arranged over two floors on London’s Fulham Road. We worked closely with Poltrona Frau’s in-house design team to deliver a luxurious new home for the brand.

The retail catering and leisure extension to the refurbished shopping centre in Bielany, Poland, is designed to reference the local landmarks, geography and culture. Facades are inspired by rock formations and resulting patterns are used to generate massing, geometries and patterns in the architecture.

This adaption of a shell and core building over three floors provides new offices, a lighting showroom and Category A offices for subletting. The Atrium showroom accommodates 40 staff and has associated facilities such as client meeting spaces and a kitchen. The showroom can also be used for events, having a bar area and a 50 seat seminar space.

This is a mega 175,000 sqm. refurbishment of an existing shopping centre in Russia for Ingka shopping centres. We were commissioned to implement a meeting place strategy throughout the interior spaces and to complete the external renovations and entrances. The project also included creating a new restaurant terrace and IKEA integration following their latest guidelines.

A luxurious black and bronze aesthetic with a fully customisable module encompassing shelves, lights and fixtures, re-established this 1973 retailer to its original status as a luxury clothing store. The UK’s fourth largest shopping centre has been transformed into a contemporary destination. Embracing Sheffield’s steel legacy, our proposal is inspired by the process of making steel, which is interpreted in abstract ways. The original centre was cluttered with impeded sightlines, having four zones that lacked distinction, poor legibility and orientation.

Completion 2017 Paddington Lawn was the first commission under the Network Rail retail architects framework. Our vision created a retail and catering destination that fully integrates with the magnificent volume of Brunel’s famous station structure. The customer experience is improved to provide an elegant piece of placemaking with a tenant mix that caters for the ‘grab and go’ right through to quality dining and drinks in a unique and memorable setting.

As part of the Westgate Oxford development, for which we were masterplan architects and responsible for all the common elements, we created a unique rooftop food and beverage destination with outstanding views over the dreaming spires of Oxford. This project generated 12 rooftop dining offers, set amongst a landscaped terrace and flexible event space, providing a new dining venue in the city with an eclectic mix of places to eat, and reflects the growing trend for external dining terraces.

The new pop up mall is part of the mixeduse Ruskin Square development. Boxpark is constructed of stripped and refitted shipping containers and includes 80 units arranged around a covered courtyard space. It is made available for year-round events, while bringing a new food and drink concept to Croydon.

Part of the Paddington Central Development at 5 Kingdom Street, the masterplan proposal for this former goods yard, located near Paddington Station, is a flexible food and beverage destination, offering a street food market that can be transformed into a community sports hall. This provides an innovative and high-end twist to the food court concept. A dynamic space with views out to the city, houses Toronto’s best culinary stars in a variety of upscale kitchens and modern, open-plan dining areas. A copper box floating at its core is designed to host all the services. Whether it’s for a formal lunch meeting, after work drinks or pre-movie dinner, the Dining Hall is Toronto’s place to see and be seen.

This creates a new food hall destination within an existing shopping centre north of Stuttgart called BreuningerLand. Key aspects include flexibility, strong visual connections to the existing centre and the department store to targeting the different customer groups and seamless integration of digital technology.

The striking new children’s hospital sits in a landscaped park and our three-finger plan design concept ensures that the majority of rooms enjoy park views and gardens and terraces are equally accessible to all. This open feel begins with the atrium concourse, a five-storey high space that links the building’s two principal entrances and gives visitors an immediate appreciation of the hospital’s layout and a reassuring sense of its life and buzz.

We provided a full FF&E planning, design and specification service, working with the client, and stakeholder and facilities management teams to develop the design and specifications. The design was developed to meet the functional and aspirational brief and ranged from high end key set pieces, to the high ticket, large quantities, where quality and performance were critical.

New Covent Garden Market has just got newer; the traders have moved out of the 1970s building half a mile down Nine Elms Lane, and replanted themselves in a bright new premises opposite Battersea Power Station. Our wayfinding has been designed to reflect the visual identity and the vision of the greater development. A new fruit and vegetable market is scheduled to open in 2022.

Under the Flyover is a proposed pop-up shop and food stall development located under the Magdalen Street flyover in Norwich. The scheme reuses stripped and refitted 40ft high shipping containers arranged over two floors. Tonbridge School’s science centre dates back to 1887 and was the first in the country to be purpose built. The wayfinding scheme for the new Barton Science Centre gently combines the sign components with the architectural materials while also providing up to date and flexible information in key areas. Graphics have been integrated into the library book shelving with each panel highlighting the groundbreaking work of iconic scientists in physics, chemistry and biology.

Mivida retail district is part of the Emaar Mivida masterplan and is located on the eastern edge of New Cairo. We created a wayfinding strategy by choreographing the entire customer and user experience. Particular attention was paid to the arrival sequence, the amenities or architectural statements that greet the guests, the character and circulation within the project, what events present themselves, what people see, touch and hear, culminating in a cohesive wayfinding strategy, design system and project identity.

One Angel Square is a flexible office space designed to accommodate Northamptonshire City Council’s 2,000 employees. The internal floorplates are arranged along four internal streets each zoned by compass point.Along each one, sequentially numbered workspaces and meeting rooms are assigned a letter/ number code, created specifically to enable staff to understand and navigate the building easily.


Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology represents the biggest change to the construction industry since computers were introduced. We were the first architectural practice to be accredited to BIM Level 2 and developed the BIM Digital Toolkit for the British government, holding BSI certification. All our design teams are Revit users, and as a practice, we have extensive experience built up over more than a decade of use. We are now utilising BIM tools to go beyond the traditional design role, providing value to clients by looking forward to occupation with integrate Day 2 data for soft landings and supporting facilities management operation.
