— INSPIRE. THE CAMPAIGN FOR BCIT. EDUCATION FOR A COMPLEX WORLD

A BOLD NEW CHAPTER What is the British Columbia Institute of Technology story? Reflecting on the past year, it is first and foremost a story of unprecedented philanthropy—exceptional generosity from you, our community of partners, donors, and alumni, that is transforming the future of applied education at BCIT. We are pleased to share this story through this annual report. Through the INSPIRE Campaign this past year, the BCIT Foundation raised a historic $26 million in donations representing numerous sectors across BC, towards our three pillars: Access and Inclusion, Teaching and Learning Innovation, and Campus Redevelopment. This brings our raised and pledged support for the INSPIRE Campaign to over $100 million. Together with contributions from government and BCIT, these funds will continue to support the Institute’s campus renewal plan to ensure a leadingedge learning environment for our students, to meet the workforce demands in the province, and to contribute to the prosperity of BC. The much-anticipated new Health Sciences Centre—now the most sustainable building on the Burnaby campus—will be ready to receive students in fall 2022. The state-ofthe-art $220 million Trades and Technology Complex, which will create increased access to world-leading, adaptive learning environments for 21st-century trades education, was officially announced this past February. We invite you to read more about these two exciting developments on page 9. Students and the positive impact they will make as alumni working in every sector across the globe are at the heart of why our donors give. This was evident in the virtual 2021 Student Awards Celebration, which recognized the academic achievement, outstanding leadership, and positive contributions of our more-than 600 student award recipients and the donors who make these awards possible. Over 2021/22, we distributed 2,337 awards totalling more than $3.56 million, thanks to the generous support of donors like you. This past winter, our holiday fundraising campaigns raised a total of $58,291 from donors—more than half of whom were BCIT alumni—to support BCIT students in financial need. Thanks to these gifts, even more students can gain access to muchneeded financial support through the Student Emergency Response Fund. On behalf of our students, staff, and faculty, we thank you and each and every one of our donors for your commitment to BCIT. We want to especially thank BCIT President Kathy Kinloch, who is retiring from BCIT this year, for her guiding vision and outstanding leadership; we wish her all the very best. The next chapter for BCIT promises to be as exciting as the last. We look forward to writing it with you!

The British Columbia Institute of Technology is grateful to be located on the unceded traditional territory of the Coast Salish People.

Christine MacDonald establishes a legacy endowment for BCIT Engineering students A prolific inventor, electrical engineer Bruce Neilson was known for rolling up his sleeves and creating solutions for whatever challenges he faced. Upon his passing, his wife, now Christine MacDonald, wanted to find a fitting way to honour Bruce’s legacy. She chose to establish the J. Bruce Neilson Endowment to fund bursaries for third- and fourthyear BCIT Engineering students—students who are learning to become hands-on, solution-seeking innovators like Bruce. Thank you, Christine and Bruce, for supporting BCIT students in their journey not only to realize their career goals, but also to make a positive impact in our communities. 4

Student Awards Change Lives In 2021/22, BCIT disbursed 2,337 student awards, scholarships, and bursaries totalling more than $3.56 million. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, students are building brighter futures for themselves, their families, and the community. “Thank you for helping me fulfill my dream. One day, I will become a fullfledged nurse because there were people like you who extended financial support during my time of need.” Beverly P., Nursing student

BCIT women in trades leading the way on the Mott Electric site

For more information about how you can support student awards, contact Brianna Michielin at 604.451.7099 or bmichielin@bcit.ca.

It isn’t very often that you find a woman foreman on a job site. It’s even less often that she’s leading a team with another four women at her side. But for Sarah Raby, BCIT Electrical alumna and Foreman Electrician with Mott Electric, that’s exactly the position she’s found herself in working at the Butterfly development site in downtown Vancouver—and she couldn’t be happier. For those in the know, it’s no surprise to find this kind of diversity on a Mott Electric job site. Derek Mott, Operations, Mott Electric, is a BCIT alumnus himself, having attended BCIT for his electrical apprenticeship training right out of high school and completing the program in 2013. He says hiring women in trades is more critical than ever. In fact, Mott Electric has been supporting women in trades at BCIT for years, recently donating $50,000 over five years towards the BCIT Legacy of Leadership Award. In 2021, BCIT received a College and Institutes Canada grant to offer an Inclusive Pre-Apprenticeship Training program, with the funds from this grant providing access for 15 women to participate in the Trades Discovery for Women program. BCIT also received funding to improve the delivery of foundation programs, like Electrical, to make them more diverse and inclusive places. The co-ed Enhanced programs piloted in October 2021 and February 2022 and included incentive to women students including partial tuition fees and a $600 bursary to help each participant with the cost of their tools and required toolbox. In addition, Concert Properties and its industry partners provided half of the program tuition and supplies costs for women participants in the October 2021 and February 2022 Enhanced Foundation intakes through the Construction Trades Discovery Training Fund. In January 2022, CN donated a 1992 GE Dash 8-40CW locomotive, their second such locomotive donation to the Institute. The donated locomotive will support the BCIT Railway Conductor and Operations program. CN’s generous gift will help give students invaluable hands-on training and set them up for success to enter the ranks of the railroading community, confidently and safely. Thank you, CN, for your philanthropic leadership and commitment to supporting and educating the leaders of tomorrow.

Supporting student success through experiential learning opportunities When it comes to education, there is nothing more effective than hands-on, real-world experience. BCIT is known for it, students seek it, and industry demands it. That is why BCIT’s Centre for Workplace Education is so integral to the success of its students. It is also why RBC, one of Canada’s largest banks, has made significant contributions toward the Centre’s programs, helping countless students on their journeys to reaching their goals. With contributions from donors like RBC Foundation and through innovative learning opportunities that the Centre can provide through co-operative education, BCIT students are entering the workforce ready to make a difference from day one. Students get the benefits of increased work-integrated learning placements, increased industry engagement with experiential learning opportunities, engagement in employment preparation, coaching and job preparation courses, industry-specific resources, and skills gap development. BCIT students are in demand and the generosity of RBC Foundation helps keep it that way. “BCIT is so grateful for RBC Foundation’s contributions to the success of our students to the Centre for Workplace Education and beyond,” says Jackie Jacob, Executive Director, BCIT Foundation. “RBC Foundation has been a long-time donor of BCIT as far back as 1989, also giving generously to student awards and special projects throughout the years.” RBC’s Future Launch program is empowering Canadian youth for the jobs of tomorrow by engaging the public and private sectors to understand the barriers young people face and make a significant impact on their lives.

BCIT launches Master of Engineering in Smart Grid Systems and Technologies In an era of global climate change, there is growing demand for sustainability and carbon-neutrality to be at the forefront of business strategies, innovation, and industry. Across Canada, smart grids are widely adopted to ensure safe and efficient delivery of power in an environmentally responsible manner—helping municipalities and energy providers advance their sustainability goals. As a result, new job opportunities are emerging for skilled talent required to implement smart grid technologies. With over 15 years of industry-led, world-class applied research initiatives related to smart grids, BCIT is pleased to introduce the Master of Engineering in Smart Grid Systems and Technologies (MEng SGST) program. This part-time, hands-on program aims to support industry professionals in upskilling to ensure they have the interdisciplinary knowledge and relevant skills to be job-ready for the changing demands of the energy industry.
