THE CAMPAIGN FOR BCIT.

EDUCATION FOR A COMPLEX WORLD

The INSPIRE Campaign is the largest fundraising initiative in BCIT’s history and a catalyst for shaping the future of the Institute. As BCIT enters a bold new era, the Campaign plays a pivotal role in expanding opportunities for students, empowering faculty, and supporting the evolving needs of British Columbia.

With a broad range of entry points for support, the INSPIRE Campaign engages individuals, alumni, and corporate partners to contribute modest to transformational donations to support three strategic pillars—Access and Inclusion, Teaching and Learning Innovation, and Campus Redevelopment.

As of March 31, 2025, close to 3,900 donors have contributed to achieving the $125 million campaign goal.

Thank you for your generous support of the INSPIRE Campaign. Your contribution strengthens BCIT’s role as the premier destination for applied education and hands-on innovation. By investing in the next generation of industry-ready leaders, you are directly strengthening the skilled workforce that powers British Columbia’s economy and future.

The British Columbia Institute of Technology acknowledges that our main campus is located on the unceded traditional territories of the Coast Salish Nations of xwməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)

BUILDING TOMORROW, TOGETHER

In this 2024/25 Annual Impact Report, we are proud to share the extraordinary impact your generosity has had in advancing BCIT’s mission to empower people, shape British Columbia, and inspire global progress.

Thanks to the commitment of alumni, industry partners, individual donors, and friends, we have surpassed our goal of raising $125 million through the INSPIRE Campaign. This support has helped bring BCIT’s vision to life—ensuring more students have the opportunity to succeed, enhancing learning experiences, and transforming our campuses.

Philanthropy continues to drive major progress across all three pillars of the INSPIRE Campaign:

Access and Inclusion: Over 2,100 students received more than $2.9 million in awards this year, including entrance awards and bursaries to support Indigenous students. This enables many students to pursue life-changing education who otherwise might not have had the opportunity.

Teaching and Learning Innovation: Donations are accelerating the use of advanced technologies such as virtual reality and simulation labs that mirror real-world work, better preparing students for careers in an evolving economy.

Campus Redevelopment: New student-focused spaces like the Scotiabank Lounge, the Kathy Kinloch Lounge and Terrace, and the Cansel Computer Lab are creating environments where collaboration and innovation thrive. Further, industry leaders such as CIMS and Ideal Welders are helping build the next generation of trades training facilities.

These investments aren’t just transforming BCIT—they’re strengthening BC’s workforce and economy for years to come.

This year also marks Richard Rudderham’s final term as Chair of the BCIT Foundation Board. We thank him sincerely for his leadership, vision, and steadfast commitment to student success.

On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff—thank you for investing in the future.

EXPANDING ACCESS TO TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION

ACCESS AND INCLUSION

The INSPIRE Campaign, led by the BCIT Foundation, is dedicated to increasing student access to life-transforming education by supporting key pillars such as Access and Inclusion. With a strong commitment to fostering an inclusive environment, the campaign provides meaningful funding to help remote students access education and offers holistic support for Indigenous learners. Through the generosity of our donors, we are empowering students to build brighter futures for themselves and the communities where we live and work.

Trades students benefit from Beedie Luminaries BUILD program

To increase access and inclusion in the skilled trades, Beedie Luminaries, founded by developer and philanthropist, Ryan Beedie, launched the BUILD scholarship fund. BUILD will support BCIT students facing financial and other barriers by providing funding throughout their academic journey to pursue Red Seal certification in trades such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, welding, and sheet metal programs. This commitment is expected to assist nearly 300 students over the next five years, addressing the critical shortage of skilled trades workers in British Columbia. Through the BUILD program, it will enable a more diverse group of students to enter high-demand fields, thereby fostering a more inclusive and equitable workforce.

“Beedie Luminaries is grounded in a simple truth that our students continue to affirm: investing in education has the power to transform not just individual lives, but entire families, communities, and future generations.”

Ryan Beedie President, Beedie

Honouring culture and promoting health with the Indigenous Wellness Toolkit

BCIT gratefully acknowledges the generous support of BMO in advancing Indigenous health and wellness through the Indigenous Wellness Toolkit (IWT). This living, interactive resource is designed to support all Indigenous students and beyond by promoting mental well-being and cultural connection leading to success. The IWT will be hosted on BCIT’s Learning Hub and offer a personalized, non-linear experience, allowing students to explore content based on their unique needs and interests. Developed through engagement with Indigenous youth and elders, the toolkit incorporates lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic to reflect current challenges and foster healing and resilience. With guidance from a dedicated Education Coach, the IWT is evolving into a dynamic platform that provides relevant and effective support. Together with BMO, we aim to create lasting impact and empower Indigenous students to thrive in a post-pandemic world while honouring their identities and traditions.

Dr. Andrew Chan and Dr. Elaine She: Championing Opportunity

Retired dentists Dr. Andrew Chan and Dr. Elaine She, were inspired by BCIT’s practical, career-focused education model. Motivated by their belief in the power of education, they established a bursary to support students facing financial barriers. The bursary is aimed at high-potential students from Templeton, Britannia, and Vancouver Technical secondary schools who might otherwise delay post-secondary studies due to financial need.

Dr. Chan, who immigrated from Hong Kong with only a suitcase and received financial aid to attend university and dental school, understands how lifechanging support can be. “I want kids to go straight into BCIT and get the training they need,” he says.

Recipient Allan Dam, now studying Mining Engineering at BCIT, says the bursary allowed him to pursue a full degree without postponement.

For Dr. Chan and Dr. She, their gift goes beyond funding—it’s a vote of confidence in the next generation’s potential.

“At BMO, our commitment to zero barriers to inclusion drives us to support Indigenous-led initiatives that promote wellness, education and connection to Indigenous culture in the community. We’re proud to partner with BCIT to champion the Indigenous Wellness Toolkit as a resource that fosters healing and resilience and empowers students to thrive.”

Seibel Head of Community and Employee Giving

Opening doors to skilled trades careers through partnership

BCIT is proud to be part of the Johnson Controls Community College Partnership Program, which expands opportunities for students from historically underrepresented groups in skilled trades. The partnership supports initiatives in BCIT’s School of Energy and School of Construction and the Environment, offering tuition support for programs such as Telecommunications Systems Technician, Electrical Foundation, Security Systems Technician, and Automated Controls Installation and Maintenance.

Beyond funding, Johnson Controls employees contribute as mentors and guest speakers, helping bridge education and industry. “We’re proud to support institutions like BCIT that provide the skills and confidence students need to thrive,” says Charmyse White, Philanthropy & Volunteer Program Manager at Johnson Controls.

For students like Amelie C. Langlois, the support was life-changing: “I was a struggling student afraid I couldn’t afford tuition. With this help, I focused on my studies and future. Now, I’m building a career I’m proud of.”

Inspiring the next generation of women engineers

Diane Kennedy has played a pivotal role in advancing engineering education at BCIT. Hired in 2004 to help design the Electrical Engineering program, she later joined the faculty and helped guide the program through successful accreditation.

“I’ve always felt very connected to the program,” says Diane. “Supporting Engineers Canada’s 30 by 30 initiative for 30% female representation in engineering by 2030 is something I care deeply about.”

Together with her husband Richard Rudderham, Chair of the BCIT Foundation Board, Diane gives back through the Rudderham-Kennedy Family Foundation. Their awards and bursaries support women across all engineering programs at BCIT, with a focus on helping them thrive in a male-dominated field.

“We’ve always believed that if you can help, you should,” Diane says. “If I can inspire even a few more women to pursue engineering, that’s meaningful.”

INNOVATING EDUCATION FOR TOMORROW’S WORKFORCE

TEACHING AND LEARNING INNOVATION

The INSPIRE Campaign is transforming applied education by investing in innovative teaching methods and emerging technologies that prepare students for the jobs of tomorrow. Through immersive simulations, virtual and augmented reality, collaborative makerspaces, and experiential learning environments, BCIT is integrating real-world workflows and interdisciplinary interactions into the classroom. With support from donors to the Teaching and Learning Innovation pillar, the BCIT Foundation is helping to future-proof education—equipping students with the job-ready skills they need and industry demands to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

Scotiabank Lounge: A catalyst for student success and innovation

In December 2024, BCIT unveiled the Scotiabank Lounge at the Downtown Campus, a transformative space designed to enhance student success and innovation. Located on the fifth floor of the Technology Education and Collaboration Hub, the lounge offers a dynamic environment for students to collaborate, study, and engage in flexible, interdisciplinary learning. This initiative is part of Scotiabank’s commitment to education excellence, supporting BCIT students in Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity programs. The lounge is equipped with advanced educational technologies, facilitating real-world simulations and fostering connections between students and industry.

A legacy of support with the opening of the Kathy Kinloch Lounge and Terrace

With support of long-time advocates, Russ Cmolik and The Cmolik Foundation, BCIT unveiled the Kathy Kinloch Lounge and Terrace at the Health Sciences Centre. The lounge and terrace named in honour of former BCIT President Kathy Kinloch recognizes her significant contributions to health education and student success. The facility is dedicated to fostering student collaboration and well-being, and is designed to enhance the student experience by providing a welcoming environment for study, relaxation, and community engagement. The Kathy Kinloch Lounge and Terrace will serve as a lasting legacy, reflecting the values of innovation, inclusivity, and dedication to shaping future healthcare leaders.

Advancing geospatial education at the Cansel Computer Lab

To support the Geomatics program in the School of Construction and the Environment, BCIT unveiled the Cansel Computer Lab in recognition of local industry leader. Their gift of the Trimble Business Centre software, provides students with hands-on experience with the latest technology in land surveying and data mapping, preparing them for careers in surveying and mapping across British Columbia and Canada. During the event, Cansel reaffirmed their commitment by extending software access for an additional five years and providing two graduating achievement awards for Geomatics students. This collaboration ensures that BCIT students have access to the latest technology and resources, aligning education with industry needs and contributing to the development of a robust talent pipeline in the geospatial sector.

“Our

pride in our business comes with a responsibility to support young professionals and equip educational institutions with the resources needed to help students thrive in their careers.”

Iliana Tsali Segment Manager, Cansel

FUELING INNOVATION AND EXPANDING IMPACT

CAMPUS REDEVELOPMENT

Over the past year, the INSPIRE Campaign has played a vital role in transforming the BCIT Burnaby Campus through the renewal of aging infrastructure and the creation of next-generation learning environments.
