P

resented annually by The Palm Springs Cultural Center, this Festival that celebrates hardboiled American crime dramas on the cinematic screen was founded in 2000 by the late Arthur Lyons, showcasing an eclectic mix of Classic Film Noir “B” movies. The Gala 20th Anniversary Opening Night will feature “The Night of the Hunter” (1955), starring Robert Mitchum as an odious sociopath posing as a devout country minister who attempts to reap a secret bounty hidden by two innocent children. While Shelley Winters might be snookered, the legendary Lillian Gish knows evil when she sees it. The film was directed by Charles Laughton and produced by Coachella Valley resident Paul Gregory. Kathy Garver will be on hand as a special guest.

Other screenings will include titles like “Somewhere in the Night” (1946), “The Scarlet Hour” (1956), “Trapped” (1949), “Calcutta” (1947), “Shakedown” (1950), “King Creole” starring Elvis Presley (1958) and so many others, all characterized by romantic innuendos, hoods with big guns and no-nonsense dialogue. Film buff or newbie, the Festival is a treasure trove of film history and culture, honoring those films created from the early 1920s to the late 1950s. Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival takes place May 9-12 at the Camelot Theatres located at 2300 East Baristo Road in Palm Springs.
