Frank Family’s 30th Anniversary is Dedicated to You

Over 4th of July weekend in 1993, Napa Valley’s iconic Frank Family Vineyards first opened their winery doors. What initially began as a hobby for Founder Rich Frank, has not only grown into a successful business, but a premier Napa Valley destination. Rich started vacationing in Napa Valley while he presided over the motion picture and television production at Disney Studios in the late 1980s. He quickly fell in love with the beauty of Napa Valley and purchased a charming 1930s Tudor-style home built on a hillside vineyard in the heart of Rutherford. This coveted piece of land would later become Winston Hill, the vineyard where Frank Family’s story began, inspiring Rich’s purchase of the historic Larkmead Winery and eventually, more than 380 acres of some of the finest vineyards throughout Napa Valley.

As founders, Rich and his wife, Leslie, an Emmy Awardwinning broadcast news journalist, were the original

visionaries of Frank Family Vineyards. Their winemaker for the past 20 years, Todd Graff, has been along for the ride as well, and he’s played a critical role in making the Frank’s vision a reality by crafting elegant and balanced wines vintage after vintage.

With three decades of world-class winemaking and award-winning hospitality under their belts, Frank Family Vineyards plans to celebrate their loyal members and guests all 2023. “Our friends and fans are truly the ones who helped build this winery and for that we want to dedicate our 30th anniversary to them,” says Founder Leslie Frank. “This year is our chance to say, ‘thank you.’”

From founder-hosted wine dinners across the country to 1,000 bottles of a commemorative 30th anniversary sparkling cuvée, Frank Family Vineyards has thought of everything to help fans celebrate this incredible milestone with them.

A SPARKLING ANNIVERSARY

To honor its 30th anniversary, Frank Family Vineyards crafted a late disgorged sparkling rosé to commemorate the journey that began with Founders Rich and Leslie Frank three decades ago. Named, Lady Edythe, in honor of their matriarch, Edythe Frank, this wine is worthy to be classified as a tête de cuvée, essentially the best of their best; and with only 1,000 bottles produced for this special occasion, this wine is all the more precious and rare.

The Frank Family Lady Edythe Brut Rosé comes from the standout 2015 vintage and is a tribute to the winery’s sparkling wine legacy dating back to the late 1950s when their historic property was home to one of California’s earliest sparkling wine producers, Hanns Kornell Champagne Cellars. Decades later, Frank Family continues to honor the heritage of their iconic winery by handcrafting sparkling wines according to the méthode champenoise.

This commemorative bottle will be released at Frank Family’s 30th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, July 1 and made available online and in the tasting room soon after. For event tickets and wine release details, visit FrankFamilyVineyards.com.

Some of the country’s best restaurants are lined up for a series of exquisite wine dinners, which is fitting since Frank Family is one of the most popular wines in high-end restaurants. Frank Family Brut Rosé Ice Pops

Ingredients - Ice Pops

• 1 cup strawberries, sliced

• 1 bottle Frank Family Brut Rosé

• 2 ounces lime simple syrup

Optional: Sliced lemon, lime, or raspberries to play up the mouthwatering notes of the Frank Family Brut Rosé

Method - Ice Pops

1. Combine Brut Rosé and lime simple syrup in a large pitcher or squeeze bottle.

2. Divide the mixture between 10 (2.5 ounce) popsicle molds and place on a flat surface in the freezer for one hour.

3. Use a popsicle stick to break up any frozen chunks and push sliced strawberries, or other preferred garnishes, into the mixture. Gently tap the molds on the countertop to remove any air bubbles. Insert the popsicle sticks, and freeze for at least 6 hours, or overnight.

4. Carefully unmold and enjoy on its own or place a pop in a glass of Brut Rosé for an even more refreshing summertime treat!

Ingredients - Lime Simple Syrup

• 1 cup sugar

• 1 tablespoon lime zest

• ½ cup fresh lime juice

Method - Lime Simple Syrup

1. In a small pot, bring ½ cup of water to a boil, then add 1 cup of sugar.

2. Stir constantly until the sugar is completely dissolved, approximately 3 minutes.

3. Remove from heat and stir in lime zest and lime juice. Cover and chill for 1 hour.

Winemaker Lunch Series at Somerston Estate

Join Director of Viticulture & Winemaking Craig Becker and Winemaker Cody Hurd for an elevated food and wine experience.

Estate Executive Chef Dan Solomon will prepare you a seasonally sourced lunch expertly paired with limited-production Estate wines during this extremely-limited and intimate event

Napa Valley’s Somerston Estate has launched a new Winemaker Lunch Series featuring Winemaker Cody Hurd. Recently appointed to the post of head winemaker, Hurd is thrilled to share his expertise with guests in a fun and casual setting.

“The lunch series enables us to showcase our wines through food in an intimate yet casual way,” says Hurd. “Chef Dan (Executive Chef Dan Solomon) is a master at creating menus that pair perfectly with each of the three courses offered.” Working in tandem, Hurd and Solomon will, in turn, discuss the day’s dishes and wines, including the highlights to look for in each.

The intimate Winemaker Lunches will host between 15 and 30 guests for an elevated food and wine experience showcasing the Estate’s limited-production wines. As Somerston’s assistant winemaker for the past dozen years, Hurd has an incredible knowledge of the individual vineyard blocks that make up the 1,682-acre property located in the eastern hills of Napa’s Vaca Mountain range.

Originally from Washington State, Hurd relocated to Napa Valley in 2009 and was invited to join the Somerston Estate/Priest Ranch cellar team in 2010. Working under the tutelage of Craig Becker, Hurd worked his way up from cellar master to assistant winemaker, associate winemaker, and now, head winemaker. Still an integral

part of the team, Becker is the cofounder and director of viticulture and winemaking. But Hurd who now oversees all winemaking protocols, including harvest, fermentation management, managing the cellar crew, and blending to bottling. As winemaker, his focus is maintaining Somerston Estate’s portfolio of single-block wines and wine blends that reflect the full diversity of the vineyard.

Chef Dan will draw from his passion for fermentation, an affinity for Chicago-style dishes, and high-quality, seasonal ingredients. Born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Chef Dan’s culinary journey started at the age of 16 when he began making pizza and pasta at a small mom and pop shop outside of the city. After studying Culinary Arts at Kendall College, he honed his craft in diverse settings throughout the greater Chicago area. His appointment at Somerston Estate marks a return to Napa Valley, having previously worked at the esteemed La Toque restaurant, where he first cultivated a profound understanding of the intricate relationship between food and wine.

Chef Dan echoed Hurd’s statement about the new offering saying, “I believe that food and wine go hand in hand, and I look forward to creating a casual yet delicious menu that complements the award-winning portfolio of wines. Our collective goal is to create quality, approachable food that just tastes good. Imagine walking along the Napa Riverfront about 150 years ago. At that time, what would eventually become Napa’s thriving leather tanning industry, was just beginning. This new industry would flourish in Napa for over one hundred years.

The tanning industry has been gone for decades. Today galleries, storefronts, and a winery occupy these historic buildings that front the Napa River. The smell of leather tanning has been replaced by the pleasant aroma of wine and wine barrels, and instead of seeing laborers milling about, people are sitting outside, sipping wine, laughing, and enjoying the riverfront view.

A visit to Vinoce is a special wine experience. Tim Nuss will likely welcome you on arrival. Opt to taste wines inside the cool, funky tasting room, or outside on the patio overlooking the river. Tim’s enthusiasm is contagious, and tasting his wines will immerse you in a special wine adventure, made all the more enticing because of Tim’s personality and hospitality.

Nuss means “nut,” in German. The Nuss family is of GermanItalian heritage. Noce means “nut” in Italian, Vin or Vino means “wine” in Italian. Hence Vinoce is a play on the Nuss families heritage and words and translates to “Wine-Nut.”

Look forward to having a great time wine exploring at Vinoce. The Nuss Family crafts delightful, enticing wines with a passion that tells a story. And, as Tim talks about his history and his family’s wines, he will tell you: “We don’t take ourselves seriously ... we take our wines seriously!”

THE WINES – THE STORIES

Depending on availability, when you come for wine and fun at Vinoce, you may sip on an elegant Sauvignon Blanc (and if fortunate, you may try Lori’s Lucky Penny, but that’s a story for Tim to tell), a St. Helena Cabernet

Sauvignon, reflective of the region’s terroir, or The Grappler, the flagship wine of this boutique winery. The Grappler is a palate- and sensory-pleasing Zinfandel, great to savor on its own, or to enjoy with cheese, a burger, or steak but definitely a wine to share with friends.

As Tim is pouring, and zipping around the tasting room and outside patio area like a whirlwind, he will regale you with his personal and family history which is blended with an obsessive love of winemaking, people, history, and fun.

You may be dazzled to learn about the close connection between Tim and his family with Robin Williams (yes, that Robin Williams), and Robin’s Mt. Veeder property, which is how the Nuss family became involved in winemaking. You may also hear the story of how the Sauvignon Blanc became named Lori’s Lucky Penny (suffice it to say, this elegant liquid is an homage to a special person in Tim’s life, his mother).

Even though Tim is born and raised in the Napa Valley his parents’ New Jersey heritage really shines through in him. With Tim you get a feeling he would end up being one of two things in life: A New Jersey-style gangster or a damn fine winemaker! Guess which path he took.

A GATHERING PLACE

After your first visit to Vinoce, and meeting Tim, you will want to make this a regular gathering place. There are no strangers here, only new friends. Sip by the riverfront, or inside, and become part of the Vinoce family. Pour a glass of Sauvignon Blanc, or enjoy a glass of The Grappler, as you imagine the sweat labor of decades that went into creating so many of the wines we love to drink. Most of all, enjoy the energy, friendship, and passion that is infused in this out-of-the-way urban wine destination. And, when Tim gets going with his impromptu routine (which will captivate you), remember, he’s just another wine nut like we are, wanting everyone to have fun with friends while enjoying his wine.

THE GRAPPLER

The Grappler is the lynchpin, the star of Vinoce’s wine line-up. But this is not just any Zinfandel. The succulent wine, along with what it represents, makes this Zinfandel extra special. Grappling means “wrestling.” Brian (Tim’s father), Tim, and his brother, Tyler, all partook in the sport of wrestling and that’s why the wine is named The Grappler. However, more than just a sport, grappling is a discipline and way of life. Like winemaking, it takes discipline, commitment, and passion, plus the ability to get back up on your feet after being knocked down.

The Vinoce Family wanted to create not only a special wine for people to enjoy but a wine that was representative of the hard work and dedication of the Mexican people, which he describes as “being the backbone of Napa’s wine industry.” Too often we don’t appreciate what goes into the creation of wine. Labor, love, sweat, passion, and people. The Grappler honors and pays respect to these hardworking, industrious people who have ‘grappled’ with hard times, becoming an integral part of the wine community.

The Grappler is a serious wine, without being pretentious. Additionally, the labels honor “the Luchador” or Mexican wrestler. There is even a story behind the labels, which Tim will tell you about.

Family and dog friendly, this is the place where “in-the-know locals go” for affordable, friendly wine country fare so follow their lead! Buon Appetito!

Wild Goat Bistro | Petaluma

Using fresh, locally sourced ingredients, you may want to try the Into the Woods Pizza, with French onion mascarpone, hen of the woods mushrooms, mozzarella trio, sweety drop peppers, and truffle oil. Practically the entire menu is gluten free – even the house-made desserts. The styles, creativity, use of fresh ingredients, melding of flavors, and variety of pizzas you will enjoy in Napa and Sonoma counties are almost endless.

Fumé Bistro and Bar | Napa

This may not be a pizza-focused Italian restaurant, but if you want to enjoy one of the best traditional wood-fired pizzasthis is the place. Fumé is a true neighborhood restaurant and now you are in the know. Right off Hwy 29, it’s a hidden gem that shouldn’t be missed. Reservations are strongly suggested.

Diavola Pizzeria & Salumeria | Geyserville

Specializing in Neapolitan-style pizza, house-cured salumi, and handmade pasta – this is another mouth-watering gem to be experienced. Lunch or dinner, your senses will thank you as you relish a pizza straight out of the wood-burning oven. Adding to your experience: Diavola is located in an historic building, dating from the 1900s, putting forth a very cool indoor and outdoor vibe.

What’s all the fuss about? A bite from one of Live Fire’s Pizzas will answer that question immediately. When “pizza” is in the main name – despite the other great offerings, you probably want to order the pizza! Enjoy a hot, delicious pizza, with perfect crust cooked in an almondwood, wood-fired oven. Eat at the counter, outside tables, or take it home. I’m kind of a purist so I go for their four-cheese pizza (with mushrooms added) YUM!!

The Red Grape | Sonoma

Easy walking distance from Sonoma Plaza, Red Grape has consistently been voted “best pizza” being awarded “people’s choice awards” from The Sonoma Index-Tribune. The New Havenstyle thin-crust pizzas will make you salivate and want more. With a wide selection of pizzas to choose from, my personal favorite is Stella’s Honey Pistachio – I give that my OMG seal! Bring your family to another local favorite, for food, ambiance, and fun.

Recently remodeled, PizZando is elegant, classy, and comfortable. ‘Wine Lifetime Achievement Award’ at California State Fair

Sonoma County wine pioneer David S. Stare of Dry Creek Vineyard is the recipient of the California State Fair “Wine Lifetime Achievement Award.” Stare is one of two recipients for the 2022 year alongside legendary wine writer Bob Thompson, as the State Fair Advisory has recognized multiple industry experts across award categories due to delayed events during the pandemic.

Coming west in the late 1960s with little more than a dream to start his own winery, David Stare is the original innovator of present-day Dry Creek Valley.

“It was 1971, and I was studying winemaking at UC Davis during the week and searching for vineyard property on the weekends. It was on one of those visits that I discovered the Dry Creek area and immediately fell in love,” said Stare.

As the first new winery in the Dry Creek Valley following Prohibition, Dry Creek Vineyard has become the flagship producer of Fumé Blanc and Zinfandel in Sonoma County. Over the last 51 years, the winery has also developed an international reputation for its Dry Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Bordeaux varietals and Meritage blends, continuing to craft classically styled, terroir-driven, appellation-focused wines.

Stare’s pioneering legacy reflects his lasting impact. Among the many achievements during his career, Stare was:

• First to plant Sauvignon Blanc in the Dry Creek Valley in 1972.

• First to produce a Fumé Blanc in Sonoma County.

• First to initiate the appellation status for the Dry Creek Valley in 1983.

• First to label a wine with the Dry Creek Valley appellation.

• Ranked among California's first proponents of Bordeauxstyle blending.

• First to release a wine using the classification of “Meritage” (1985 vintage) on the label to classify Dry Creek Vineyard’s Bordeaux-style blend.

• First to champion Zinfandel among world-class vinifera.

• First to coin the term “Old Vines” Zinfandel, beginning with the 1985 vintage.

The journey to establish Dry Creek Valley as a premier winegrowing region was never easy, but David Stare remained persistent in his vision despite skepticism from agricultural critics.

“All along the way, I was told that my ideas had never been done before. Being a kid from Boston, I was just bullheaded enough to do what I wanted to do,” said Stare. “I am so proud that Dry Creek Vineyard remains one of the last truly private, family-owned, iconic wineries from Sonoma County consistently producing 90-plus point wines!”

Stare’s work extends far beyond the five-decadesold family winery. As a community leader, he has served as President of the Society of Blancs, President of the Winegrowers of Dry Creek Valley and President of the Sonoma County Wineries Association, as well as serving on the board of directors of the California Wine Institute. He was recently honored with Wine Enthusiast Magazine’s “American Wine Legend” award as well in 2022.

With a passion for philanthropy, Stare continues to serve as the Board Chairman for Global Partners of Development, initiating Vineyards to Villages in 2012, a program that raises money from the wine industry to bring clean water to Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. His family winery Dry Creek Vineyard continues to pave the way to an innovative future, led by the second generation and Stare’s daughter, Kim Stare Wallace.

New Release Wine Recommendations

Enjoy these wines from up and down the Golden State Wines from Mendocino County, Napa Valley, Paso Robles, and Sonoma County.

If you’re looking for true Burgundy-style Pinot Noir from California, this bottling is spot on. It shows of the more classic French style in its restraint, low-alcohol composition, bright acidity, ripe but not richness of fruit, and complex flavor profile that marries fruit with earthy, herbal notes. The wine is aged for 16 months in 33% new French oak, giving it nice depth and tannin structure. The palate brings forward notes of cherry, black tea, and forest floor. This is a stunning Pinot Noir that honors the varietal and showcases the best that California has to offer from its fruit.

From the talented Daou brothers, the 2020 Soul of a Lion is top of the line for Paso Robles Bordeaux style blends. The wine is composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon with 13% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot; it sees an impressive 22 months of aging in 100% new French oak. One of the many skills the Daou brothers possess is integrating new oak and this bottling is no exception — the oak is seamlessly balanced with a ripeness of fruit, softness of tannin, and an undeniable elegance. On the palate, the wine expresses intricate notes of blackberry, roasted coffee beans, and wet earth. It’s enjoyable now but will age seamlessly for years to come.

The Mathew Bruno 2020 Blanc de Blancs is a lovely bubbly made from 100% Los Carneros Chardonnay. It’s made in the traditional Méthode Champenoise style and spent 12 months en tirage. It’s a lively sparkling with effervescent bubbles, aromas of ripe green apple and pineapple, and flavors of green apple, lemon, and toasted nuts on the palate. Pair this sparkling with assorted charcuterie and cheese for a decadent snack spread this summer and beyond.

This is another beautiful expression of Pinot Noir from one of the state’s most coveted terroirs for the varietal: the Sonoma Coast. It’s bright and ripe with lively acidity, and balanced by the 11 months of aging in 33% new French oak. The 13.5% alcohol offers restraint without compromising the ripeness of fruit, which shows off fresh raspberry and cranberry notes coupled with burnt sugar and floral tea.

The California wine community considers being responsible neighbors and caretakers of the land a crucial aspect of their professional and personal values. For numerous growers and vintners in the state, adopting sustainable winegrowing methods has been a longstanding practice, starting as far back as the late 1950s with educational initiatives. For over two decades, they have demonstrated a firm dedication to sustainability and transparency, evident in the numerous educational programs and certification initiatives that have surfaced.

What Is Sustainable Winegrowing?

Sustainable winegrowing involves a comprehensive set of practices that are environmentally sound, socially equitable, and economically viable. Growers and vintners throughout California have adopted those standards to grow and make high-quality grapes and wine, respectively.

These practices conserve water and energy, maintain healthy soil, protect air and water quality, enhance relations with employees and communities, preserve local ecosystems and wildlife habitat, and improve the economic vitality of vineyards and wineries.

Some examples include:

• Employing sheep, cover crops, and birds, such as raptors, to control weeds and pests

• Using drip irrigation and process ponds to conserve water

• Composting, recycling, and reusing to minimize waste

• Providing employee training and recognizing contributions to sustainability efforts

Addressing diversity, equity and inclusion issues to enhance communities

California has one of the most comprehensive and widely adopted sustainable winegrowing programs in the world, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and leadership in sustainability. Since 2003, the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA)—a partnership between growers and vintners—has promoted sustainability from grapes to glass.

In 2010, CSWA introduced its certification program, Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing, providing annual third-party verification that a winery or vineyard has adopted and implemented stringent sustainable winegrowing standards. In addition to implementing required practices that address the environmental and social responsibility aspects of sustainability, companies

Currently, 80% of California wine is made in a certified California winery, and more than 2,584 vineyards totaling 233,061 acres are certified.

Since 2017, participants have had the option to put a certification logo on their labels, and there are now over 19 million cases of wine with the logo.

When you see the circular Certified by Certified California Sustainable Winegrowing logo you know these wineries are required to source at least 85% of their grapes from certified vineyards and 100% of their grapes must come from California.

Shakespeare Summer Stroll Returns to di Rosa! Site-integrated performances amid exquisite art and nature in Napa

di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in Napa and Shakespeare Napa Valley with Napa Valley College announce Shakespeare Summer Stroll, a site-integrated presentation of scenes and monologues from some of Shakespeare’s most beloved plays, interwoven with the sculptures and outdoor spaces at di Rosa.

Petaluma Gap ’s Wind to Wine Festival, August 5

Petaluma Gap AVA producers will be pouring their highly-awarded wines

The Alliance anticipates another sold-out event with more than 400 attendees and 25+ wineries participating the Wind to Wine Festival on August 5 at SOMO Village. New this year is the addition of satellite Wind to Wine events hosted by individual vintners and allowing attendees to participate in intimate winemaker dinners and hosted experiences.

“Once again the Wind to Wine Festival will feature the AVA’s signature varietals – Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah – with additional wines offered from winemakers who push the cool-climate envelope with their Albariño, Pinot Gris, Grenache, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon, among others,” said Tom Gendall, Director of Winemaking for Cline Cellars and President of the Petaluma Gap Winegrowers Alliance Board of Directors. “Over the last year, the number of 90+ Point Wines from the AVA has substantially increased, and many will be offered for tasting at the festival. In addition, several winemakers who do not have tasting rooms will participate, so this is a rare opportunity to taste their wines before purchasing,” Gendall said.

A menu of delicious bites selected to complement the wines will be served along with an array of artisanal cheeses from Point Reyes Cheese Company, whose dairy

farm is located along the Pacific near the edge of the Petaluma Gap AVA. Back by popular demand, guests will be entertained and informed by a story corner, featuring tips and tales from Petaluma Gap winemakers and growers. And the venue’s Redwood Grove will be the site for live music, enjoyed under the shade of the towering 80-food redwoods.

Wine, food, and music celebration returns to The Meritage Resort

Festival Napa Valley’s signature celebration of exceptional food, wine, and music will take place July 15 from 11am to 3pm. Held on the central piazza of The Meritage Resort, Taste of Napa features offerings from more than 70 wineries, breweries, restaurants, and culinary artisans. The event also includes live music, games, activities, prizes, a Reserve Tasting Salon, and the chance to sample wines from international wine partner, the Wines of Catalonia.

“Taste of Napa is more than just a celebration of food and wine; it’s a celebration of the community that makes it all possible,” said Festival Napa Valley CEO Rick Walker. “The event is a testament to the generosity and hospitality that the Napa Valley is known for, and a wonderful opportunity for locals and visitors alike to come together and celebrate life's simple pleasures.”

New elements at Taste of Napa this year include a Play Court sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Thrive featuring life-size fun and games; an “Ask a Wine Writer” opportunity where guests can engage with celebrated San Francisco Chronicle journalist Jess Lander; and a chance to win prizes, including international travel, by collecting Taste of Napa passport booklet stamps.

The music lineup for Taste of Napa includes jazz from the Frost School of Music All-Stars led by Shelly Berg and Broadway classics from Festival favorite Christina Maxwell, while Taste’s Reserve Tasting Salon offers guests premium wine tastings of limited-edition vintages and special treats in a private setting.

Tips on Wine Tasting

Guidelines and Etiquette to Enhance Your Experience

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect.

Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country.

Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:

• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved.

• Understand that there may be a time limit

• Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs.

• If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person.

• If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly.

• Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)

• Be flexible

• Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.

• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period.

• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast.

• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.

• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!

• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

• Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help.

• Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle).

• Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).

• Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and best not to wear white!

• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit.

• Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.

• Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.

• Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery

• Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.

• If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.

• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.

• Enjoy yourself!
