CELEBRATING THE RESIDENTIAL PARK COMMUNITIES FOR 64 YEARS

An evening with Mel Brooks

E

mmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award winner Mel Brooks will bring his hilarious career retrospective to The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa on Saturday, September 29, at 8 p.m. “An Evening with Mel Brooks” will explore the legendary filmmaker’s life as an actor, writer, producer and director through personal anecdotes and clips from some of his movies. One of only 12 EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winners, Brooks’ career began in television writing for Sid Caesar on “Your Show of Shows.” Together with Buck Henry, he also created the long-running TV series “Get Smart.” He then teamed with

Carl Reiner to write and perform the Grammy-winning “2000 Year Old Man” comedy albums and books. He won his first Oscar in 1964 for writing and narrating the animated film short, “The Critic.” His second came in 1968 for the screenplay of his first feature film, “The Producers.” For three consecutive seasons, from 1997 to 1999, Brooks won Emmy Awards for his role as “Uncle Phil” on the sitcom “Mad About You.” He received three 2001 Tony Awards and two Grammy Awards for “The Producers: the New Mel Brooks Musical,” which ran on Broadway from 2001 to 2006 and still holds the record for the most Tony awards ever won

by a Broadway musical. In 2009 he received The Kennedy Center Honors, recognizing a lifetime of extraordinary contributions to American culture. In 2013 he was the subject of an Emmy Award-winning American Masters documentary on PBS titled “Mel Brooks: Make A Noise,” and was the 41st recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award. In 2016 President Obama invited him to the White House to receive the National Medal of Arts. Among Brooks’ many hit comedy films are: “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “Silent Movie,” “High Anxiety,” “History of the World: Part I,” “Spaceballs,” “Robin Hood: Men in

Tights,” and “Dracula: Dead and Loving It.” His film company, Brooksfilms Limited, also produced critically acclaimed films such as “The Elephant Man,” “The Fly,” “Frances,” “My Favorite Year,” and “84 Charing Cross Road.” His recent projects include three Emmy-nominated HBO comedy specials: “Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again,” “Mel Brooks Strikes Back!” and “Mel Brooks Live at The Geffen.” The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa is located at 32250 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. Senior News Line: Flu season is coming fast By Matilda Charles

F

lu season is just around the corner...again. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a few things are new this year. Topping the list — the vaccines have been adjusted to better match the viruses that are circulating. Fluzone High-Dose is the one made for seniors over the age of 65. The vaccine contains four times the regular dose because we

need help with developing a stronger immune response. What’s concerning is that the high dose for seniors contains only three vaccines, not four. The shot has vaccines for A/Michigan, A/Singapore and B/Colorado. Regular quadrivalent (four-way) vaccines, also protect against B/Phuket. However, even with the highdose vaccine, we might not be completely covered. A 2014 study concluded that the high-dose was only 24 percent more effective

than the regular dose. It’s curious that the study ran from March to August, which generally isn’t thought of as the flu season. Another curiosity: While the CDC says the high dose is approved for people age 65 and older, they have not specifically stated a preference for any vaccine for that age group. Here’s a tip: Don’t wait for your doctor’s office to call. Call them. Or get the vaccine at a chain drug store or community health clinic.

Last year was a high-severity flu year for all age groups, and the last thing you want is for the vaccine to run out. The CDC suggests getting vaccinated before the end of October. Flu season, however, starts in October, and it takes a few weeks for the vaccine’s protection to set in. Last year’s flu season was especially long. Keep an eye on your state’s CDC website so you’ll know what’s going on around you. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
