CELEBRATING THE RESIDENTIAL PARK COMMUNITIES FOR 63 YEARS
Little Big Town brings on a tornado of sound The country foursome will blow audiences away By Alison Elsner
F
resh off their recent win for Best Country Duo or Group Performance at the 2018 Grammy Awards for their blockbuster single “Better Man” (written by Taylor Swift), Little Big Town shows no signs of slowing down. Known for their pitch-perfect harmonies, the group has had the same four members since its founding in 1998: Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet. Their musical style relies heavily on four-part vocal harmonies. Unlike most vocal groups, Little Big Town does not feature
a definitive lead vocalist. Instead, their songs are either led by any one of the four members or by all four in varying combinations. Westbrook and Sweet also play rhythm guitar. Fairchild and Westbrook married and welcomed a son in 2010. In 2015, the band achieved a career defining milestone when their hit single “Girl Crush” took Best Country Song at the Grammy and CMA Awards and went on to become America’s best-selling country single of the year. With albums “Tornado” (2012) and “Pain Killer” (2014), Little Big Town has achieved huge success with multiple chart-topping singles like
“Pontoon,” “Tornado” and “Day Drinking.” Their most recent albums “Wanderlust” (2016) and “The Breaker” (2017) continue that chart-topping tradition. The band announced that they would be the first act in history to have a residency at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. On October 5 during their show at the Royal Albert Hall, the band revealed that they would be headlining the 2018 C2C: Country to Country festival, making history as the first act to play the event three times. Inducted into the iconic Grand Ole Opry in 2014 by none other than Reba McIntire, the group has
chalked up in excess of 40 award nominations, and in the past five years they have taken home over 20 awards, including multiple Grammys, CMA and ACM Awards and even an Emmy Award. The group is one of the biggest country acts in the country right now, and audiences can definitely look forward to their hit-laden repertoire and award-winning stage presence. Little Big Town takes the stage at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino, located at 84245 Indio Springs Parkway in Indio, on Friday, June 29 at 8 p.m. For tickets, visit fantasyspringsresort.com
Pinocchio in the Desert is a valley favorite that boasts plenty of charm By Charlie Price
E
verybody and their mother has been to Pinocchio in the Desert. True, visitors flock here en masse during peak travel season, but it remains one of the area’s favorites for locals, too, who just can’t resist the establishment’s all-day (7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.) happy hour that includes bottomless champagne for $4.95. Hold on there, desert dwellers—you and your clan are limited to 90 minutes
of that but that’s enough for a few rounds of cheers. Elsewhere, if the summer heat is dragging you down, this place is the perfect pick-me-up. Standouts include the bountiful platters of food that will certainly fill you up and the atmosphere— misters on the patio and those impromptu dance moves from the engaging wait staff wanting to dance with you certainly help. Food items that remain go-tos: the dreamy lobster benedict (and salmon, and lox, and crab, more—oh boy!), an
extensive build-your-own omelet menu, and the popular griddle selection (buttermilk pancakes, Belgian waffles, French toast.) Still, it’s hard to pass up those delectable chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes. Pass the syrup. Pinocchio in the Desert is located at 134 East Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs. The restaurant is open Monday through Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit pinocchiops.com
