Tribe reveals plans for new cultural center Agua Caliente project includes new Museum, Spa & Bathhouse, Oasis Trail Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians Tribal Chairman Jeff L. Grubbe unveiled plans Saturday for a 5.8-acre cultural center in the heart of downtown Palm Springs that celebrates the history, culture and traditions of the Agua Caliente people. Groundbreaking for the new cultural center is scheduled for early 2018 with a two-year construction cycle. The cultural center will feature an envisioned Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, a new Agua Caliente Spa and Bathhouse that celebrates the Tribe’s ancient Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring, a Gathering Plaza, gardens and an Oasis Trail.

JCJ Architecture, of Phoenix, is the project designer. JCJ Architecture’s design concept for the cultural center reflects the Tribe’s values and ongoing commitment to the Agua Caliente people. In addition, the Center pairs up the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum with the new Spa and Bathhouse, which draws upon the rich history of experiencing the healing mineral water.

The cultural center will include numerous outdoor activity spaces, in-

cluding a Gathering Plaza adjacent to the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring, originally known as Sec he (the sound of boiling water), which serves as a commemorative focal point for the new development. Here, Tribal Members and visitors can celebrate community, history and pay respect to the life-giving waters that helped shape the Palm Springs region. Visitors can readily access from the Plaza either the Museum or the Spa and Bathhouse along landscaped terraces and pathways that serve as an extension of the Gathering Plaza. An interpretive green belt, the Oasis Trail, meanders through the property and provides an interactive, cultural learning environment. This trail recreates, on a smaller scale, the distinctive character, geology, flora and beauty of the nearby Indian Canyons, one of the ancestral homes of the Agua Caliente.The new Museum includes approximately 48,000 square feet and will feature collections in a main gallery, changing gallery and art gallery.

The new Museum, a repository for

cultural artifacts, stories and history, will also include an education center and garden. The Tribe will build and own the Cultural Center while the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum organization will run the day-to-day operations of the Museum sharing the stories of Native people and, in particular, the Agua Caliente people, who have a vibrant, living culture with a rich and complex history.

“The new Museum will be a stateof-the-art- facility with a basket-starter shape incorporated in its architectural design and a dome-element in the Grand Lobby,” said Julia Bussinger, Director of the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum. “It will adhere to the best museum environmental standards to display and take care of our collections, and host world traveling exhibitions.

This is an exciting time. My staff and I are ready for the opportunities ahead of us, and we will work diligently to convey the living culture continuum.”

The Spa includes approximately 40,000 square feet to celebrate the ancient healing waters of Agua Caliente

Hot Mineral Spring with treatments rooms, men and women’s bathhouses, a tranquility garden, a salon, fitness center and outdoor mineral pools. The water from the Agua Caliente Hot Mineral Spring is estimated to be upwards of 12,000 years old and is truly unique as it contains a mineral make-up that has not been found anywhere else in the world. The Tribe has shared the healing water with visitors for more than 100 years. This new Spa will be the fifth bathhouse or spa at the site, with the first one operating in the late 1880s.

The Oasis Trail will meander between the Museum and Spa and will include terraces, a waterfall, sandy beach, fire pit and meditation labyrinth. Building upon the traditions of the Agua Caliente people and the world-renowned natural features of their ancestral lands, the new Agua Caliente Cultural Center will encompass a wide-range of experiences and learning opportunities that conveys the values and legacy of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.

The Platitude and Deflect Strategy

There are first responders – men and women who are heroes who bravely swarm to the rescue whenever there’s a tragic emergency -- and then there’s the first response, by politicians who have nothing to add so they put out statements that invariably include the bromide that their “thoughts and prayers” are with the victims and their families. Admirable thought, until we consider it has become a purely mechanical way of saying they have zero to say, that they’re concerned but impotent. At its worst, it is an excuse not to take meaningful action.

Then there’s the other cliche that’s in vogue. We heard it constantly after the massacre in Las Vegas; it’s some variation of “This is not the time to discuss politics” or “we’ll get to the gun-control discussion after the period of mourning.” It’s a favorite of government leaders who wish to deflect discussion about common-sense limits on the most insanely destructive killing machines.

They have aligned themselves with the arms industry’s lobbyists, the National Rifle Association and the rest, and have opposed any sort of controls on these weapons, like the ones in the arsenal of the Las Vegas monster. But what better time to talk about it?

In fact, Republicans and other arms merchant apologists are so spooked that they’re even saying they might “look into” making “bump stocks” illegal, which they’ve refused to do in the past. In case you’re not a homicidal weapon aficionado, a “bump

stock” is a readily available add-on that can turn an already lethal semiautomatic assault rifle, where you have to pull the trigger each time you shoot someone, into a fully automatic one, where you literally don’t lift a finger as you spray mass murder.

Now even the NRA claims that it might support some sort of regulation on them. Of course, they didn’t say it would be meaningful regulation. At the same time, the GOP has discreetly put on hold legislation that would have made gun silencers legal. So that’s what passes for progress, albeit minuscule. Or it could be that GOP leaders are simply hunkering down until after attention to this massacre is distracted.

We’ve gotten a taste of that from a story already competing with it, the one where NBC reported that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson got so frustrated with President Donald Trump that he called his chief executive “a (expletive) moron.” The outburst reportedly happened in private. In Washington, very (expletive) little is private. So out trotted Tillerson to go on camera pretending to deny he had called Trump “a moron,” with or without the adjective.

He was obliged to go through the Trump grovel: “He loves his country,” said Tillerson, describing the boss. “He puts Americans and America first. He’s smart.” Once the obsequious bowing and scraping ritual was done, President Trump told reporters he had “total confidence” in Tillerson, which may or may not be the kiss of death.

He also held the line with his party’s refusal to enter the gun-control debate, insisting “We’ll talk about that at a later date.” That may seem moronic, even (expletive) moronic, but it works. By Matilda Charles Time for Medicare Open Enrollment Medicare has open enrollment every year between Oct. 15 and Dec. 7. It’s the only time you can make changes to your existing plans.

Making decisions about Medicare can be tough because once you make any changes, you have to live with them for a year. Here are a few things to know: • When you sign up during open enrollment, coverage will start Jan. 1, 2018.

• If you’ve already had Medicare, you’ll receive a Medicare & You booklet in the mail.

Spend the time between now and December reviewing it and deciding if you need to make any changes.

• By now you should have received notices in the mail as well, either a Notice of Change or Evidence of Coverage, and maybe both.

These will tell you whether there are changes to your existing plan and whether the costs are changing.

• If you go with an Advantage plan, you’ll also likely need a Part D drug plan to go along with it. If you have an Advantage plan and don’t like it, now is the time to make a change.

• Many people who like their current plan do nothing and are automatically re-enrolled, but beware: There might be changes in the plan’s cost and coverage that you won’t know about unless you read the notices. To review other possible plans, go online to www.medicare.gov and look for the plan-finder tool.

Best bet: If this is your first time signing up, or if you know you need to make changes to your plan but need help, get advice.

There’s too much at stake to just pick a plan you haven’t studied. On the Medicare website, look for contacts and select your state, then look for State Health Insurance Assistance Program. Or call Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE.

The valley’s three State and County Certified Farmers’ Markets are now open.

A Palm Springs Cultural Center program, the three outdoor Certified Farmers’ Markets have become a must-do for visitors and year-round residents who use the outdoor opening as a seasonal tradition each fall.

Paul Palodichuk, General Manager of the Certified Farmers’ Markets noted that February 2018 will be a momentous time in the CFMCV’s history. “We’re coming up on a landmark – one decade of Certified Farmers’ Markets here in the desert.”

Megan Goehring, CV Site Manager and Children’s Nutrition Education Program coordinator reflected with wonder on the past 10 years.

“It’s been a privilege to participate in our increasing involvement in the community.

But considering the terrific customer response that first day, it’s not too surprising,” she commented, recalling the busy opener almost ten years ago in Palm Springs. Since then the Markets have expanded to five

locations three outdoors in the high season and two indoors over the summer months.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers classes for people 50 and older

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus is accepting registrations for its fall classes. The fall session begins on Monday, October 23, with a week of free courses that are open to the public.

The regular term starts Thursday, Nov. 2, and includes six-week and three-week courses with topics in the arts, history, literature, economics, natural sciences, philosophy and more. Several film courses will also be offered. In addition to traditional courses, there are a variety of free member events, discussion groups, and a fabulous educational travel program.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute is a program designed for adults 50 and older who want to experience learning for the fun of it.

OLLI offers non-credit, universitylevel courses, but without the grades, tests or homework.

The future of transportation has arrived in Palm Springs Tesloop ride share whisks passengers to LA or OC

By Alison Elsner If only there were a reasonably priced and convenient way to power on over to Los Angeles or Orange County for the day to see a show, visit family or friends, attend a game or hit the beach and then return to the Coachella Valley without worrying about traffic and parking and maybe not even having to stay overnight.

There is a way, and it’s called Tesloop. It’s the first service offering cityto-city shared-car transportation in Tesla Model X cars, making it a breeze to travel to and from Los Angeles and Orange County from the greater Palm Springs area both one way and round trip. The rideshare service has been operating with routes between Los Angeles, Orange County and Las Vegas for the past two years, and in the future it is expected to connect up the Coachella Valley with Vegas,

San Diego and other cities like Santa Barbara and San Francisco as the service expands. There are presently 38 drop off and pick up locations in our valley with almost as many in the LA and OC areas (and a few in San Bernardino County, too), most at hotels, restaurants and shopping or business centers.

As if the falcon wing doors and the privilege of being driven in one of Elon Musk’s iconic creations with wheels aren’t enough, passengers experience the travel service’s electric vehicles which include amenities like free Wi-Fi, phone charging, snacks, (non-alcoholic) beverages, curated musical selections, noise cancelling headphones and a choice of comfy napping pillows.

The driving force, so to speak, behind Tesloop is 17 year-old Haydn Sonnad, whose seed of an idea has grown into an innovative new

transportation company that is convenient, economical and sustainable. Haydn’s father, Rahul Sonnad, co-founded the business and is Tesloop’s hands-on and personable CEO. Haydn says, “Our goal is to create the best mass transit system in the world, while providing travelers an alternative to burning fossil fuels and creating air pollution.”

The company is moving along in the fast lane with Rahul Sonnad as CEO, active in technology and startups since the 90s. Rahul explains, “We started by putting people in a Tesla, giving them food and drink and treating them nicely. We realized this formula was working when we started seeing one five-star review after another.”

Every car is semi-autonomous, which means at some point of the ride it may be on auto-pilot, however there is a driver, or human “pilot” in

every vehicle to keep passengers safe.

The fully driverless ride is on the horizon, but there are some technological and legislative hurdles to cross first. Pilots undergo a series of thorough screenings, background checks, training and random drug testing.

Three or four passengers share the ride, and prices per person one way range from $29 to $79 with some prime periods bumped up to give pilots more generous compensation for working on a holiday.

Thanks to funding from Clearstone Ventures, as well as angels from Tesla Motors and Facebook, Tesloop has been growing steadily. Rahul and his team also calculate that costs will decrease as the need for pilots is eliminated with full vehicle automation over the next two to three years. Tesloop’s routes are between 100 - 250 miles and have supercharging at the point of origin, in the middle and at the destination. Enormous investments have been made in a network of high speed chargers to make rides more efficient. Most charging stops take around 20 minutes.

Rahul says, “The Palm Springs area is amazing. However, aside from driving oneself, it can be quite inconvenient and time consuming to simply get in and out. Tesloop solves that by providing a transportation system that makes people happy and respects the planet.”

As Tesloop expands in its newest market of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley and beyond, Rahul says, “Our goal is to offer incredible value to passengers, take vehicles off the road and create good will. Basically, everyone wins.”

Pet of the Week “Pet Rescue” Greetings! I’m little Bessie and I’m a female Chihuahua/Papillon mix who’s about 6-7 years old.

My medium-length coat is a combination of white Bessie: and apricot. I have light Chihuahua, eyes and I’m adorable.

I’m called little Bessie Papillon because I weigh about 7 pounds. Everyone thinks I’m the cutest little thing because of my very petite appearance!

Because I’m so lightweight and tiny, you can take me anywhere I’m allowed to go! And you can easily pick me up to cuddle with something I love doing because I’m a very sweet little girl.

I would make a great companion for you because I’m very affectionate and I get along with other dogs as well as people. I’m also a wonderful “lap” dog because I’m mellow and I love sitting on someone’s lap and having my ears rubbed. That’s one of my favorite things in the world and getting kisses on my forehead!

Modernism Week adds new events to 2017 Fall preview schedule Four-day event provides sample of February Festival activities including tours, educational programs, and receptions Modernism Week announced today that it has added more events to the schedule for the upcoming 2017 Fall Preview, which will take place October 19–22 at various locations in the Coachella Valley. This year, the annual event was expanded to four days and several new events have been added to the already-robust schedule.

Recipe of the Week Kitchen Diva

By Angela Shelf Medearis An Apple a Day the Easy Way There is some truth to the old saying about the health benefits of eating an apple a day. One apple has about 80 calories and about four grams of fiber.

Two-thirds of the fiber and lots of antioxidants are found in the peel of an apple. Antioxidants help to reduce damage to cells, which can trigger some diseases.

Apples are the second-most valuable fruit grown in the United States. Oranges are first. The top apple producers are China, United States, Turkey, Poland and Italy.

Fall is the best time for harvesting and eating apples. Apples that ripen in late summer do not keep as long as apples harvested in the fall. Apples ripen six to 10 times faster at room temperature than if they are refrigerated. Fuji is one type of apple that can be stored for a long time. It will retain its texture for several months.

A good apple should be bright, crisp and juicy. Fresh apples need to be stored in a cool place (about 32 F to 40 F) to help keep them fresh and prevent rotting. Be careful not to get below 32 degrees F, because freezing will quickly deteriorate fresh apples.

Think beyond apples eaten out of hand or in a dessert. Using apples in savory dishes is a great way to incorporate fruit into your daily diet. Try these recipes for Apple and Gouda Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, and Crispy Chicken with Apples and Brussels Sprouts.

Have an apple a day, the easy way!

Apple Gouda Grilled Cheese Sandwiches • 4 slices of fresh crusty bread (Pullman, Multigrain, Sourdough or Ciabatta) • 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled and sliced thinly • 4 slices smoked or regular Gouda cheese • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise Lay out bread slices. Add 1 slice of cheese each to 2 slices of bread. Divide apple slices in half and top each cheese slice. Top with another slice of cheese, and then place remaining bread slices on top. Spread one tablespoon of the mayonnaise on the top pieces of bread.

Heat two heavy, dry skillets over medium-high heat. Place both of the sandwiches with the mayonnaise-covered bread on the bottom of one skillet to cook first. Spread the remaining tablespoons of the mayonnaise on the top piece of bread.

Using pot holders, place the second, heated heavy bottom skillet on top of the sandwiches. Press down on the skillet to ensure full contact and a crispy texture. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until browned. If more browning is required, flip carefully and cook for another minute on the other side. Slice in half and serve. Makes 2 sandwiches.

Chicken Skillet with Apples, Brussels Sprouts I love this recipe because it showcases the best of fall in a one-skillet meal.

You can toast the pecans in a dry skillet first over medium-high heat for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring to keep from burning the nuts. Set the pecans aside, wipe the skillet clean and proceed with the

rest of the recipe. While the chicken is cooking, prep your vegetables. Makes 4 servings.

• 1 1/2 pound boneless chicken thighs • 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 4 tablespoons olive oil or canola oil • 1/2 pound Brussels sprouts • 1 large Granny Smith apple • 1/2 large red onion • 3 garlic cloves • 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar • 2 teaspoons brown sugar • 1/3 cup chopped pecans, toasted Season the chicken thighs with the poultry seasoning, 1 teaspoon each of the salt and pepper, and the cayenne pepper. Place a large, cast-iron or nonstick skillet over medium-high heat and add in 2 tablespoons of the oil.

Place the chicken, skin-side down in the skillet and cook without moving, uncovered for about 15 minutes, until the fat has rendered and the skin is deep golden brown and crisp. Turn chicken and cook on the other side. If the skin is sticking to the pan, it probably isn’t finished on that side. Reduce heat as needed if the skin starts to burn before it is golden brown.

Turn the thighs over and continue to cook for about 15 to 20 more minutes, uncovered. When the meat closest to the bone is cooked through, the chicken is done. Transfer the chicken to a plate.

Thinly slice the Brussels sprouts, apple, red onion and garlic. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to the pan. Add in the Brussels sprouts, apple, red onion and garlic clove to the skillet, and cook over medium-high heat.

Cook, stirring, until the Brussels sprouts are wilted, about 5 to 6 minutes.

Stir in the vinegar, brown sugar and the remaining 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and black pepper.

Return chicken to pan to warm, skin side up, about 2 minutes. Sprinkle with the toasted pecans.

Now Here’s a Tip

By JoAnn Derson • Use glow-in-the-dark paint to light a path in your yard. Simply paint a series of rock markers, and when the sun goes down, your path will be lit up.

• Ingenious way to hide a back-up key: Hot glue a decorative or distinctive stone to the top of a clean pill bottle. Insert key and close top. Simply bury the bottle somewhere in your yard or garden bed, leaving the stone above ground. When you need a key, it’s easy to pull up.

• Got a few minutes standing in line? Go through the photos on your smartphone, deleting those that are out of focus or no longer relevant (like the pic you snapped a month ago of your grocery list written on the fridge white board!).

Download photos off your phone to a storage device weekly. You’ll thank yourself if your device is lost or damaged.

• Fun pre-Halloween activity alert: “Our family likes to host a spooky movie night near Halloween for all the kids. If the weather is nice, we project a kid-friendly movie on an outdoor screen and invite neighborhood kids over to have a pajama party in the back yard.” – E.L. in Tennessee • Make your own face paint with a few simple ingredients. Mix cornstarch and lotion together to form a paste. Mix in a few drops of vegetable oil to keep the paste from drying out and cracking.

Then add washable paint to the paste to color.

Apply with makeup sponges or cotton swabs, then add glitter, etc. Have fun!

• Recipe substitution: Need baking powder? Mix 1/4 teaspoon baking soda with 1/4 teaspoon cornstarch and 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar.

Social Security Matters

“Ask Rusty” - Government Pension Offset (GPO) Dear Rusty: Several years ago the husband of a friend of mine died before he collected any of his Social Security. She applied for widow benefits from his Social Security, but she was told that because she had never paid into Social Security and because she had a pension from her employer, she was not eligible to draw survivor’s benefits on his Social Security. What has this got to do with her not getting his Social Security? Please help us understand this. Signed: Helpful Friend Dear Helpful: It sounds as though your friend’s survivor benefits are affected by something called the Government Pension Offset (GPO). The GPO affects people who have a pension from employment which did not contribute to Social Security, such as a State or local government agency, a school system, college or university, or even older Federal employees who were covered under the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS). Under the GPO, Social Security reduces spousal and survivor’s benefits by $2 for every $3 received from a government pension. This can partially, and often totally, offset the Social Security benefit a person might otherwise be entitled to. For example, if your friend was entitled to a Social Security survivor benefit of $1,500 per month, and she is receiving a civil service pension of $3,000 per month, she would get no Social Security benefit because 2/3rds of

her civil service pension ($2,000) is more than her Social Security survivor’s benefit. This appears to be what has happened in your friend’s case.

Public service employers who don’t participate in the Social Security program usually offer employees an enhanced alternative pension program designed to replace Social Security benefits. GPO was first enacted in 1977 in order to prevent those employees from “double dipping” by receiving both a pension from work where they did not pay into the Social Security system and Social Security (which they did not contribute to). The Government Pension Offset, as well as another Social Security rule called the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP), as you can imagine, are not very popular with those affected by them. GPO affectsa non-covered worker’s spousal and survivor benefit, while WEP affects a noncovered worker’s Social Security retirement benefits and their spouse’s spousal benefit, but not their spouse’s survivor benefit. Despite their unpopularity these are, nevertheless, existing laws which affect Social Security benefits for those receiving a pension from work in which they did not contribute to Social Security.

The trend appears to be that more and more public service employers are now participating in the Social Security program. Even the Federal Government, which prior to

1984 didn’t participate in the Social Security program, switched to a retirement system called the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) which now requires employees to pay into Social Security and, thus, be eligible for Social Security benefits. Federal employees covered under FERS, and public service employees with a pension from an employer who participates in Social Security, are not affected by the Government Pension Offset.

For information, the Social Security Fairness Act of 2017 (H.R. 1205 and S.915) proposes to eliminate both the GPO and the WEP, and has been referred to appropriate committees in both the House and the Senate, but there is currently no estimated probability of passage.

Palm Springs’ Chicken Ranch Restaurant to host the Corridor Cinema Series in Downtown Palm Springs!

From November 22 through June 20, Palm Springs’ Chicken Ranch restaurant will host this monthly food-andclassic movie love fest, in the center courtyard of The Corridor, located on Palm Canyon Drive between Alejo Road and W. Chino Drive in the design district.

Morgan’s Corridor Cinema Series is designed not only to engineer a new and unique movie experience for desert dwellers; he’s flipping the table on the concept of “movie munchies.” In addition to classic movie munchie fare like popcorn and candy, Chicken Ranch will be serving up delectable offerings such as a cheese, fruit and nut plate, free range fried chicken strips, orange chicken, salad wraps, chicken soup, and farm fresh salads.

Wine, beer and cocktails (as well as bottled water and sodas) will also be available.

The Corridor Cinema series kicks off November 22 at The Corridor courtyard in Palm Springs with “The Devil Wears Prada.”
