period in the second half of the 19th century. It’s not only a time rife with imagery, but also the era is a metaphor for survival, expansion and formation of our very identity as a growing nation, especially in the southwest region and California where miners were first said
to exclaim, “There’s gold in them thar hills!” The mystique and allure of the Old West continues to permeate our culture. John Wayne movies, Little House on the Prairie stories and legends like Jesse James and Billy the Kid still command attention. Tales of outlaws and
lawmen, saloons and general stores, gunfights and card games, cattle rustling and cowboys, railroad cars and stagecoaches and Native American existence still hold sway with our imaginations, giving rise to the popularity of attractions that recreate the Wild West lifestyle. Continues on page 12 >>
