Cultural Weekend
Cabot’s Pueblo Museum Hosts Artists From Oaxaca, Mexico
I
t’s all about dynamic culture this week, and Cultural Weekends 2017 at Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is on the top of the list. The event unfolds Jan. 27-29. The outing fosters Cabot’s vision of bringing art, culture, and people together. This is the first of three Cultural Weekends and it features artisans from Oaxaca, Mexico. Guests can expect an exceptional setting and observe master artisans at work. There’s also an opportunity to experience the artistry + ancestry of Oaxaca artists, overall. Enter Yesenia Salgado Tellez. The jeweler creates in the ancient and
disappearing filigree jewelry style. Her family preserves the Oaxaca traditions in their art. Also on board: Eleazar Morales. The artist carves and paints whimsical animal carvings. He is self-taught and has participated in the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Meanwhile, Porfirio Gutierrez, a Zapotec weaver, continues his ancestral traditions in weaving and using natural dyes in his textiles. He was the 2016 Smithsonian Institute Artist Good to know: The backstory of Cabot Yerxa. The artist, adventurer and writer was one of the origi-
nal homesteaders in the Coachella Valley and is recognized as the man who discovered the hot and cold aquifers for which the region is famous. He also embraced many cultures and beliefs and was a true friend to the Native Indians living in the region. As a community advocate Yerxa helped found the city of Desert Hot Springs and was instrumental in bringing visitors and residents to the region. He began construction of his Pueblo, one of the most culturally significant buildings, and the first green structure, in the Coachella Valley in 1939 and continued adding
to the 5,000 square foot structure until shortly before his death in 1965. Now operated as a nonprofit museum, Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is dedicated to promoting the life and accomplishments of Yerxa.
