Helping a Community in Need Sometimes problems are too big for a town or a city to solve by itself. In 2005, a storm put most of New Orleans under water. Homes and businesses were ruined. Thousands of people had no food or shelter. Who reached out to help? How did the city recover? The city of New Orleans sits on very low ground near two large lakes. Years ago, levees, or walls, were built to keep the lakes’ water from flooding the city. However, in 2005, a huge storm struck New Orleans. Afterward, many of the levees that helped keep water out of the city broke.
