GINUE Centre | English for Children Course Descriptions
English for children These courses incorporate a holistic approach to teaching, including social skills development for young children and learner training skills for older children. Language is not taught in isolation from other subject matter, which allows us to use project work, craft lessons, drama, video and the Internet to enhance the learning experience. In this way, children can benefit from all possible channels to help make the learning experience memorable and effective for them, e.g. receiving visual and aural input, and completing imaginative, cooperative, and physical-response tasks and activities together. Children make progress in a relaxed environment, with help and encouragement from the teacher, to speak and use the language in meaningful contexts.
Levels Level 1 – Starting Out This course lays the foundation for success. In the early stages the children will initially focus on developing their confidence in listening and speaking and the skills to make them better learners. The second semester will introduce reading and writing to the level of the word.
Level 2 – Building English This course builds essential language for the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking so that children can communicate meaningfully about themselves, their family and their classmates in structured activities. Their literacy is developed to the level of sentences and simple paragraphs.
Level 3 – English Together This course continues to develop children's ability to communicate together by increasing their range of language for use in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Children learn to read and write paragraphs with more challenging language and produce a number of short texts such as a postcards or letters.
Level 4 – World Explorers The Year 4 course challenges children to communicate with each other and about the world around them using a greater range and accuracy of language. At this level, they work with different kinds of texts on a variety of topics for older children. They are encouraged to use their English language and learning skills to the full by working in cooperation with others and individually on project work.
Level 5 – English Achievers The course is for ten to twelve year olds who have a solid grounding in English and can read and write cohesive sentences and paragraphs.
