WHY TAKE MY EXAMS AT THE BRITISH COUNCIL? The British Council Examinations Services administers exams for thousands of students and working adults, both Malaysians and foreigners living across Malaysia.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

• For students seeking entry to university or college courses abroad. • For prospective migrants to Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom. • For those seeking employment and entry to training courses.

Exams are held up to three times a month in Kuala Lumpur. The British Council is also offering IELTS in Petaling Jaya, Penang, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Miri, Bintulu and Sibu. Kindly refer to the 2010 test dates on our website. Registrations are ongoing until fully booked.

IGCSE AND GCE O-LEVEL The equivalent of “SPM” – For students who have completed four to five years of secondary education or those who are home-schooled.

CIE IGCSE, O-Level, AS/A-Level May/June and October/November

SCHOOL EXAMS General Certification of Education Exams offered by (CIE) Cambridge International Examinations and Edexcel International * IGCSE, O-Level, AS/A-Level

GCE, A-LEVEL AND AS-LEVEL The equivalent of “STPM” – For students seeking entrance to higher education or a profession or those who wish to re-sit the examinations.

STEP (Sixth Term Examination Papers) • Mathematics

• STEP Mathematics exams are used by Cambridge & Warwick Universities to assess the suitability of candidates for their courses.

Exams are held once a year in June. Register three months before the examination.

TSA (Thinking Skills Admission)

• All students applying to study Computer Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Psychology, Sociology and Political Studies at University of Cambridge and UCL.

Exams are held once a year in October/November. Register before mid-September.

ELAT (English Literature Admissions Test)

• All applicants to undergraduate courses in English at the University of Oxford.

Exams are held once a year in October/November. Register before mid-September.

BMAT (BioMedical Admission Test)

• All students applying to study medicine, veterinary medicine and other biomedical sciences courses at University of Cambridge, Oxford and UCL.

Exams are held once a year in October/November. Register before mid-September.

TKT - CAMBRIDGE ESOL (Teaching Knowledge Test)

• All existing teachers. • People who would like to teach English but do not yet have a teaching position.

• Any lawyers working in international firms. • For employers to assess the level of English of their legal staff. • Law students.

TAKING AN EXAM: A STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE Step 1: Enquiry • Visit our website www.britishcouncil.org.my • Send us an email kualalumpur.exams@britishcouncil.org.my • Give us a call at 03 2723 7900 • Come and see us at our Kuala Lumpur centre (see back cover for contact details) Step 2: Registration • Collect application form at the British Council or download it from our website • Complete the form and attach any necessary paperwork e.g. passport and photos if required • Prepare the exam fee (we accept cash, cheque, postal order or bank drafts made payable to “British Council”), or by telegraphic transfer to our designated bank account and send us the bank slip* • Bring your form, photos and paperwork to us • New: IELTS online registration available soon Step 3: Preparation A wide variety of support is available for candidates; for example, for IELTS, we have IELTS courses, a one-day workshop and self-study materials • Check the website of the exam you are taking for further support • Visit our website as well to find useful tips: www.britishcouncil.org.my Step 4: Before the exam • The Exams Services will post/email you all the details for your exam (confirmation letter, timetable, candidate instructions and venue details) well in advance • Please let us know if you do not receive your pre-exam information 10 days before the examinations date Step 5: On the day of the exam • Arrive at the test venue on time • Make sure you bring your confirmation letter AND your national ID or passport • Remember that you should bring your own pens, pencils, calculators and other stationery that you might need (except for IELTS, where pens, pencils and eraser will be provided) • Remember also that you are not allowed to bring bags, mobile phones, or food and drink into the exam hall • We advise not to bring any valuables with you on the exam day Step 6: Results The results will be sent to candidates or can be collected from our centre. For IELTS, you will be able to access your results online 13 days after the test. Step 7: Certificates • We will send a letter to inform you when you can come and collect them personally at the British Council • For IELTS, candidates will be able to collect the test results 13 days after the test * Kindly call us for bank information details
