We hope this guide is helpful to you. It was created for three distinct groups:
A. Parents of freshmen familiar with Bishop Carroll due to previous children attending the school, or alumni themselves and seek updates on any changes since their time.
B. First-time parents whose children are entering Bishop Carroll, regardless of their personal history with the school, aiming to ensure they navigate the experience seamlessly.
C. Parents who are entirely new to Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, without prior experience or knowledge of the institution, seek comprehensive guidance.
Don't hesitate to get in touch with the main office at 316.722.2390, the Counseling office at 316.722.6670, or the Advancement office at 316.729.5289 if you have any questions.
In September 1962, Bishop Mark K. Carroll established Notre Dame High School to meet the needs of the ever-growing parishes of Wichita’s west side. Notre Dame existed for two years with freshmen and sophomore students and officially closed in May of 1964 to be reopened at 8101 West Central. Classes at Bishop Mark K. Carroll High School began in September of 1964 with the Christian Brothers living on campus. Madonna High School for girls opened in September of 1966. It was staffed by the Adorers of the Blood of Christ and Congregation of St. Joseph Sisters. In 1971 Madonna High School merged with Bishop Carroll High School to become coed. In 1999, through the Threshold to Tomorrow Diocesan Capital Campaign, renovations to the chapel, front entrance, kitchen, offices, academic classrooms, halls, commons area (including restrooms), and parking lot improvements were completed. From 2006-2009, Building the Tradition Capital Campaign raised $10.8 million in pledges for the construction of additional classrooms and the Activities Complex. The Activities Complex included a 2,000-seat gymnasium, varsity locker rooms, offices, and a multi-purpose wrestling room. During the summer of 2009, through the generosity of our Bishop Carroll family, turf was installed in the Bishop Carroll Family Stadium, a facility that serves all of the west Wichita parishes and community. Bishop Carroll continues to raise funds for the campaign This is Our Home Keeping it Cool to cover the $4.2 million used to install a new HVAC system in 2020.

At BCCHS, we believe that service learning is an integral part of our mission in forming Disciples of Christ. Our goal is to engage students in meaningful service opportunities that will deepen their faith, teach them the value of serving others, and help them respond gratefully to the gifts they have been given.
The program is divided into two parts. The first part involves a day of service on October 2, where all students will join their house for community service activities after an all-school mass. Throughout the day, students and staff will engage in various service opportunities, followed by inspiring speakers, a service fair, and an ice cream social to wrap up the event. The second part of the program will entail students completing service hours on their own, with specific hour requirements for each grade level. Details are available on the website.
Freshmen: 10 hours
Sophomores: 15 hours
Juniors: 20 hours
Seniors: 25 hours
Lockers are divided into hallways (Freshman 100 hallway, Sophomore 200 hallway, Junior 300 hallway, and Senior 400 hallway). Hallways are located with 100 hallway on the main level, 200 hallway on the main level, 300 hallway on the upper level, and 400 hallway on the upper level. Think of the hallways as the “H”. When a student reaches their 5th and 7th class absence in a semester, an attendance letter stating the total days missed is emailed to parents through document delivery. This letter informs parents of the school’s concern and about the possibility of the student not being eligible to receive credit should the student exceed 10 absences in a class. If a student reaches 10 absences, the school will mail an attendance letter and contact parents to inform them that credit will be withheld should the student be absent again. If a student exceeds 10 absences, the school will withhold credit unless the Superintendent determines that another consequence is more appropriate. Special circumstances for chronic illnesses, surgeries, etc. should be communicated to the school nurse and an Individual Health Plan (IHP) may be implemented.
All medication must be administered by the school nurse. Students cannot carry medication on their person or in their backpack, and medications cannot be kept in lockers.
A doctor’s note must be on file with the school nurse to receive medications at school. (317-T) This includes over-the-counter medications such as Tylenol, ibuprofen, and etc.
All prescription medication must come in the original bottle from the pharmacy.
A new medication order is required for each school year.
BCCHS allows for the possession of telecommunications devices by students on campus (see B.Y.O.D. policy) during the regular school day. However, BCCHS does not allow the telecommunications device to be kept on the student’s person. This means that the device must be kept in a purse, book bag, etc.; it cannot be kept in the pocket of pants, coats, etc. During the school day (defined as being from the start of school at 7:55 a.m. until school is dismissed for the day at 3:15 p.m.), these devices must be turned off and may not be used by students. Not only are these devices a potential distraction to the classroom learning environment and potentially disruptive to the school climate, but the technology available makes it possible for students to photograph and send copies of tests to other students, text message answers to test questions to other students, and otherwise compromise the integrity of our teachers’ assessments and grading of student learning. At Bishop Carroll Catholic High School, the interpretation of the policy has been expanded to include Apple Watches, earbuds, iPods, iPads, MP3 players, personal laptop computers, etc. because so many of these devices share features with a cell phone. The only reasons for school personnel to ask a student to surrender a cell phone, etc. would be:
A) If the cell phone rang or vibrated (which would mean the device was turned on in violation of the policy).
B) If school personnel saw the cell phone, etc. (a device visible on the student’s person is a violation of the policy).
All students are required to carry a demerit card and present it to a staff member upon request. Failure to present a demerit card will result in disciplinary action.
Lost demerit cards will result in a $3 fine. A washed demerit card must be turned in to the assistant principal’s office for arbitration.
Accumulation of demerits will result in the following:
5 demerits = 1 detention, referral slip
10 demerits = 2 consecutive detentions, referral slip
15 demerits = 3 consecutive detentions, referral slip
20 demerits = 4 consecutive detentions, referral slip, parent and pastor letter
25 demerits = 1-3 day ISS, referral slip, parent contact
30 demerits = 1-3 day OSS, referral slip, a parent conference with Administrator discussing future attendance at BC.
Any student who receives 25 demerits in a school year will be put on probation and under a disciplinary contract for the following academic year.
By requiring uniform dress, BCCHS seeks to do several things: create a clean, neat, and orderly learning environment; teach students that they are appreciated at school not for their wardrobe, but for their character and intellect; and promote safety and community. Students will adhere to the uniform dress code prior to entering the building each day. All school uniforms must be in good repair with no holes, rips, frayed edges, stains, etc. Indicated uniform pieces must be purchased from Schoolbelles Uniform Company.

The Parent Walk-Thru will be held shortly after school has been in session. Parents will walk through their student’s schedule for each class hour of the school day. Please bring a copy of your student’s schedule for that evening.
These are held in the designated locations. Dates will be posted on the website calendar. Enter door #4 and pick up your student’s report card in the Atrium and then proceed to the Activities Complex (AC), teacher’s classroom, or assigned location. When in the AC you will see all the teachers waiting at tables to discuss your student’s progress. Please be patient and considerate of our teachers and others waiting in line. If you wish to engage in a more extensive conversation, consider arranging a meeting with your student's teacher. Students may attend the conference with you.
Your freshman and/or new student, along with the school leaders, will get the whole school to themselves (faculty and staff are here too). They begin their day at 7:55 a.m. in the activity complex and learn what community they are assigned to. The day is full of activities where they will learn the tricks of being a freshman/new student. The day ends at 12:30 p.m.
The freshmen will be in their community touring the school and stopping at different stations for information. After their tour, they will go through their class schedule like every other day. They will have a chance to get their lockers organized and to feel very overwhelmed by the time the morning is over. But don’t worry, by the next day they will be ready to tackle their first full day!
Freshmen will not be able to park on campus due to our large upper class enrollment. This includes handicapped and no parking zones.
Before and after school, drop off and pick up, of your student is allowed along the front drive in the front of the school, and by the activities complex. You may only form one line and please do not drop off your student in front of stalls in the parking lots. You can be ticketed if you park in places that are not designated for parking. This includes handicapped and striped no parking zones.
Encourage your student to be involved and participate in the many different activities and opportunities available here at Bishop Carroll. As a family go to a football game or other sporting event, sell trash bags, eat at the Super Bowl Breakfast, buy spirit wear, attend Golden Review and Artistic Fusion, or attend any of the many events and programs Bishop Carroll has to offer. We have very talented students who amaze and entertain us every year! God’s gifts in action. Go to our website, daily bulletin, and the calendar in the agenda book to see all the events and programs.
Fall 2017 saw the institution of a new way of organizing and engaging the student body: the Community System. As part of the Community System, each student is assigned to one of eight Saint-dedicated communities: St. Andre Bessette, St. Dominic Savio, St. John Paul II, St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Philip Neri, St. Sebastian, St. Teresa of Calcutta and St. Therese of Lisieux.
Each community has a Faculty Dean, two student Coordinators, and is divided into eight Houses run by a Mentor with student leaders from each grade. Goals of the system include providing students with adult mentors, strengthening relationships within the school, creating student leadership opportunities, and coordinating school activities. Houses meet most days, with House time used for: attending Mass, academic tutoring, community building, or faceto-face socialization.
The Fall Sports Scrimmage is held before the Back-To-School Dance for everyone to come and see a preview of the fall sports. It was originally called a Soap Scrimmage because everyone was asked to bring a bar of soap for students to use in the showers after P.E. class and sports practices. Over the years students were no longer required to take showers after P.E. and practice, so it didn’t take long to acquire more soap than was needed.
All of the dances are under the umbrella of the Community System. Please refer to the online agenda book for the details and rules of dances.
Back to School Dance is the most popular dance of the school year. It is the first dance of the school year. It is after the Fall Sports scrimmage and is held in the Cave. Some groups make t-shirts for the dance and others just enjoy the casualness of the dance. It is a great way to begin the school year.
Students cannot wear shoes in the Cave for any of the dances. They check their shoes and other personal items in the auditorium and retrieve them when they leave at the end of the dance.
Homecoming Dance is held the Saturday night of Homecoming week and is also held in the Cave. Students can attend with a date or with a group of friends. Outside dates must be signed up in advance at school. The attire is semi-formal.
Homecoming Week-not a dance but good to know!
The daily bulletin and website will provide a schedule of Homecoming activities. Powder Puff is held on Wednesday followed by a bonfire and open mic. Powder Puff is a game of flag football between the Senior and Junior girls. Girls must have a physical on file beforehand. Check the daily bulletin and the website for more information. Homecoming concludes with the football game and the Homecoming Dance.
Sweetheart Dance traditionally has been the dance where the girls do the asking. This dance is usually a semi-formal event held at the school in February. As with all the dances, students can go by themselves or with groups and do not need a date to attend a dance. Outside dates must be signed up in advance at school.
Prom is a dance for juniors and seniors. Juniors and Seniors can ask a Freshman or Sophomore to be their date, attend by themselves, or with a group. Outside dates must be signed up in advance at school. Prom is usually held after Easter in late spring off campus. Parents are welcome to watch the red carpet entrance of our students.
(After Prom) is an event held at the school to provide a fun night of activities and games after the dance has ended and is hosted by Junior Parents. If your student did not attend prom, they may still attend After Prom. Normally a letter is sent to Junior Parents to inform them of when the informational meeting regarding After Prom
will take place. A manual from the previous year is available to assist the junior parents with their planning and preparations. As with any volunteer opportunity at Bishop Carroll, all volunteers must be VIRTUS trained to participate. You may go to our website to see when the next VIRTUS session will be held. You must have the class completed before you can volunteer. Remember it is very important to be Virtus trained so you can be involved.
Everyone is invited to attend All School Masses held in the Activities Complex. Students must be in formal school uniform for. Please refer to the online agenda for the description of the formal uniform. Join us to experience these special Masses and hear how wonderful the band and choir sound in the Activities Complex. By the time you arrive for Mass, students will be in school so please feel free to park in the empty designated spaces. You can be ticketed if you park in places that are not designated for parking. This includes handicapped and striped no parking zones.
All School Masses that we have throughout the year include:
Pastors’ Day Mass (September)
Grandparents’ Mass (October)
Memorial Mass (November)
Guadalupe Mass (December)
Christmas Mass (January)
Retirement Mass and Catholic Schools Week (February)
Easter Mass (April)
Details will all be announced in the daily bulletin, parent e-mails, on our website, and on social media as the dates approach. Please plan on joining us for as many as you can!
This organization is divided into an Academic Committee and an Activities Committee. Each of these groups select a set of officers and voting members to conduct business for the group. All parents and friends of the Bishop Carroll Catholic High School Community are members of the Bishop Carroll Parents’ Organization. These two groups sponsor many events and programs that provide resources for our school. These events provide numerous opportunities to volunteer and support Bishop Carroll. The Academics Committee is in charge of trash bag sales, football and basketball concessions, Buzz Books, and the annual Super Bowl Pancake and Sausage Feed. The Activities Committee is responsible for CSAL Christmas Basketball Tournament, spring track concessions, tailgate parties, All-Sports Program, Bishop Carroll Gold Cards, spirit wear sales, picture buttons, locker mates, golf tournament, and yard signs. When you
attend a sporting event and buy a Golden Eagles Sports Program for $1.00 you will find a great description of all these programs and events. Pick some events and volunteer your talents and time. Be the ultimate example of stewardship to your student and friends.

You are beginning that scary, wonderful, confusing, and exciting time in your child’s life called high school. During this journey you will have emotions and feelings, laugh and cry and stumbles along the way. But more than anything, you will come to realize BCCHS is here to assist you.
Bishop Carroll is a family of parents, teachers, coaches, counselors, and staff, working to form young people into strong young adults of faith and character. Is this a perfect place? No. Absolutely not. Will you disagree with policies, or teachers or coaches at some point while you’re here? You bet you will. But at the end of the day, there is no better place to be if you want your child to be nurtured in their faith, receive an outstanding education, have daily opportunities to grow and mature in a loving and safe environment and develop strength of character in activities both inside and outside the classroom.
As a parent, get involved on a big scale, a small scale, or whatever can work for you. Be a part of this community and be a steward of your child’s education and growth into a young adult. This school is as great as it is because parents before you were invested spiritually, physically, financially, and emotionally. We wish you great joy as your child embarks on their journey through high school. Enjoy it. It goes by way too quickly, like parents before you have learned. Bishop Carroll is a great place to be, for kids and parents alike. We are really glad you have chosen BCCHS for your child’s Catholic education.
