President’s Letter

“Reflection” – Proverbs 2: 6-11

“For the Lord gives wisdom, from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; He has counsel in store for the upright, He is the shield of those who walk honestly, guarding the paths of justice, protecting the paths of justice, protecting the way of his pious ones. Then you will understand rectitude and justice, honesty, every good path. For wisdom will enter your heart, knowledge will please your soul, discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you.”

As we end this first semester of this school year, I would like us to reflect on the blessings we have received this past year and how we can use the Advent and Christmas season to grow in our faith and relationship with our Lord in preparation for 2025.

Reflecting on Proverbs 2:6-11, we are reminded that wisdom is a blessing from God, a gift that brings knowledge, understanding, and discernment. These verses emphasize that the Lord grants wisdom and guards those who walk with integrity. As we begin a new year, this message inspires us to draw upon scripture for strength and fortitude, allowing God’s word to guide us in living our faith.

In these verses, we see how wisdom preserves and protects us, giving us insight to make choices that align with our calling as Disciples of Christ. This wisdom is not just intellectual but spiritual—a true guide that helps us build lives rooted in God’s truth. By relying on scripture, we receive the courage to follow Christ with conviction, even when challenges arise.

As we enter this New Year, let us reflect with gratitude on the gift of Catholic education, which nurtures this wisdom in our hearts and minds. It provides us with the foundation to live in faith and grow in our understanding of God’s word. None of this would be possible without the support of our Diocesan parishioners, alumni, and BC benefactors, whose generosity fuels our mission and enables this legacy of faith to flourish.

May we go forward, inspired by the blessings of wisdom, committed to walking in integrity, and deeply grateful for the community that surrounds and uplifts us. Through this shared mission, we grow together in faith and discipleship, honoring God’s call to be His hands and heart in our school and parish communities.

Please continue to pray for the success and spiritual growth of our students and staff. May you and your families have a blessed Thanksgiving, Advent, Christmas and New Year!

With heartfelt prayers,

Students Making Their Mark

Chaplain’s Letter

My esteemed Bishop Carroll colleague and good friend Fr. John Hay and I recently watched a show together about a man who works as an intern for a week at a fine dining restaurant. Under the clock on the kitchen wall, there is a sign that reads, “Every Second Counts”. I assumed that this sign was a reminder to the restaurant staff that the more efficient and productive they were, the more money they would make. Their goal was to squeeze as much as they could out of every single moment.

Later in the show, the intern has a conversation with the owner of the restaurant, an extremely talented chef. She begins to tell him about her father, a man who served in the military and spent a lot of his time on a naval ship. After he passed away, she found dozens of little pocket notebooks, filled with detailed descriptions of her father’s experiences: palm trees he had seen, the way the ocean looked one day, a fantastic meal he had. It was as if her father was reminding himself not to forget this moment. She told the intern that her dad would conclude each of these entries with the same words. But before she can finish, their conversation gets interrupted. The intern asks her how her dad finished each entry, but she is out of earshot and doesn’t hear. The camera then pans up to the sign below the clock, revealing the answer: “Every Second Counts”.

Every second counts. This was not an exhortation to seize every moment and get as much out of it as possible. Rather, it was a reminder that every moment matters. Every second counts, because every moment is a gift, worth receiving, cherishing, and remembering. This is the lesson that the chef’s father passed onto her in the numerous notebooks he left behind. Every moment is good, beautiful, and worth remembering.

This has been a good reminder to me to cherish every moment we have at Bishop Carroll. Time seems to fly here, and every day feels fast, full of rushing from one class or event to the next. It is hard, too, to believe that my first semester as Chaplain will soon come to an end. This makes it all the more important for me, and for all of us to slow down, to receive, cherish, and try to remember every moment.

The present moment is a gift, and the place where God comes to reveal Himself to me and draw me deeper into His friendship. Let us pray for the grace of open eyes and hearts that enable us to receive the love and presence of God as He comes to us each day. Every second counts.

In His Service

Fr. Hayden Charles ‘13, Chaplain Bishop Carroll Catholic High School

"Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can. " —John Wesley, Letters of John Wesley

Principal’s Letter

Patrons of Bishop Carroll,

May the peace and grace of our Lord be with you. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that we reach out to you, valued members of our Catholic school community. Your unwavering support and dedication to our mission are invaluable as we strive to provide an education rooted in faith, compassion, and academic excellence.

I enjoy getting to know our students, parents, and all the traditions in place.  One tradition that I would like to focus on today is our community system. This program allows the biggest school in the Diocese to ensure that every student is known and has a home. We have eight communities with approximately 180 kids in each. These communities are then split up into houses of approximately 20 kids each. The students stay in the same community and house their entire time at Bishop Carroll. Mr. Swords and Mrs. Ayres are the directors of this program, and they make sure that each house and community is involved in faith formation, team building, and other activities that will reach every student in our school. I have been so impressed with the effort and resources that have been put into this program to ensure our students are not left behind. We are in the process this year of reviewing the program and finding what is working well and what changes could be made to a good system to make it a great system.

Student Body President

These first nine weeks of school were an incredible blessing and full of excitement. We welcomed our class of 2028 by celebrating our Community First Day, dances, a memorable homecoming week, pep rallies, athletic events, and recently our annual Can Food Drive. Our student body raised 27,744 cans and donated them to Catholic Charities.  This year’s theme is “Light a Fire”. In a special way, we have asked the Holy Spirit to light a fire within our students, teachers, faculty, and staff each day. Our teachers and mentors have been tremendous role models for us and ultimately assist us on our faith journey getting us closer to heaven. I would like to thank our new administrators, Mr. Dester and Mr. McCracken, for the unwavering support and enthusiasm they bring to our school and community. These men have been intentional about connecting with students in the hallways, while we’re eating lunch, attending events and so much more. The energy and passion they bring is contagious! Thank you, alumni, for the support and prayers you have given to the Bishop Carroll community. Please know of my continued prayers for you. I am excited to continue to light a fire within our school each day.

Yours in Christ,

In Loving Memory In Loving Memory

The St ew ards hip Model

The majority of the funding for Wichita Diocesan high schools such as Bishop Carroll comes from the generous giving of parishioners to their parish, rather than from tuition payments made by parents. The parish, student & parents sign a Parish Family Agreement which allows active stewardship families to attend

On October 2, 2024, Bishop Carroll came together for a special Day of Service. Our students and staff spent the day giving back to the community, by volunteering at various organizations to help meet their needs and create a lasting impact. In the morning, our students and staff rolled up their sleeves, assisting with a wide range of tasks and responsibilities. The afternoon offered an inspiring opportunity for students to connect with local organizations through a vendor display, learning more about ways they can continue making a difference through volunteer work.

1,147 Students participated

100+ Staff participated

60+ Organizations, schools, churches, and businesses received volunteer services

8 organizations participated in the vendor display
