“Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” Matthew 16:24
The Lenten season is a wonderful opportunity to look at what God asks of us every day. Lent is the special time we use to prepare for the feast of Easter through fasting, prayers, and various works of charity. In our fast-paced world of today, I hope we can take time as a family to note the importance of genuine prayer and take time for quiet and solitude to listen and respond to God’s call. Fasting is one way of emptying ourselves of selfishness, and our sacrifices and/or pain will truly allow us to live the Passion of Christ. Our works of charity remind us of our stewardship calling to be generous and compassionate to those who are in need of our assistance.
As we draw ourselves closer to God and reflect on our calls to baptism and discipleship, I hope we can use the Easter season to promote Christian stewardship at school, work, and home. If we make the Lenten and Easter seasons special for our families, we will truly celebrate the joy of the Risen Christ and unfolding of God’s kingdom in our mist. May we use the gifts God has given us to become closer and more united with Him.
We hope you enjoy this electronic edition of the Aquila and remember to send us news and updates so we can keep connected with all of our alumni, family, and friends of Bishop Carroll Catholic High School! Prayers for a rejuvenated Lenten Season and Holy Easter!!!

One of the most central questions that we face in life, and at least on the face of it, one of the most basic, is the question “what do I want?” That is a question that occupies so much of my consciousness, whether that be consciously or subconsciously. On the surface, that probably seems like an obvious question. However, the more I dive into that question, the more the answer truly eludes me. There are so many instances in my life where I find myself pursuing something that I am just sure will give me what I want…only for me to be dissatisfied when I get it. I guess the best way for me to put it is that the more that I come to know myself, the more I recognize that I don’t know myself well enough to know what I want!
One way at getting to the answer of this question is through one of the oldest riddles in the book, namely, “Why did the chicken cross the road?” As we all know, the rather famous answer to that riddle is “to get to the other side.” However, I don’t think that is technically the right answer. At the end of the day, I don’t think that the chicken is much different than us in the sense of what “moves” it. With that being said, why did the chicken cross the road? Because there was something on the other side that looked better! In other words, what moves us as human beings (and chickens for that matter) is our desire. We are moved by that which we perceive will fulfill us. As human beings we desire meaning, purpose, something that will draw us closer to our destiny. That is where we as humans are different from the chicken, our desires draw us to something beyond the mere material. The deepest longings of the human heart compel us to seek something that will make us eternally happy, something we can begin to experience and understand now in our desire for justice, truth, beauty and goodness. The more that we come to understand these desires the more we see that they lead us beyond ourselves, to a realm of the transcendent…namely to God himself. However, in our sinfulness we settle for things short of that which have the capacity to give us what we want.
That is why the protagonist of history is the “beggar.” As human beings searching for meaning and fulfillment, we realize that we are inherently needy and dependent creatures constantly searching for something beyond our grasp that will satisfy those deepest longings of the heart. It is man as beggar that recognizes the innate poverty of the human person, that recognizes that man can’t do it on this own. On the face of it, this would seem like an instance of despair, but in reality, it is a realization of profound hope. Just as the beggar relies on the generosity of others for sustenance, so man is reliant on the grace and providence of God’s grace for fulfillment. It is when we recognize and embrace our poverty that we can begin to search for something on the horizon that is greater than ourselves, something that transcends the material world, something that will satisfy man’s infinite desire.
The good news of the Gospel is that this is something that we begin to experience here and now as we build the Kingdom of God on earth. Christ promised his disciples that those who follow him would receive the “hundredfold” in this life, not just in the life to come. This prosperity extends beyond the mere material, for as Christ said, “man does not live on bread alone.” This could not be more relevant today in our Western American culture, where we have more material prosperity than anywhere else in the history of the world, yet depression and dissatisfaction with life are at seemingly all-time highs. That is where Bishop Carroll as an outreach and ministry of the Catholic Church comes in. It is the Church, as a communion of believers in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, that allows the world to have hope that our desire both can and will be fulfilled. It is through institutions like Bishop Carroll that we strive to form man to assume the posture of the beggar, for it is only then that we can encounter that which we both want and truly need!
God bless,

I for one, cannot count the times you patiently listened to me and I always left with an action plan to fix the issue. Thank you for all the hours you stayed late to answer emails and phone calls. I appreciate you,
Vanessa, thank you for your leadership and dedication to BCCHS. You were the best principal I had during my teaching career! You always exemplified heroic patience and unwavering kindness in a role that would have worn these virtues thin in others. Thank you again and know you are truly appreciated.
Vanessa, thank you for being such an outstanding principal, but more than that for always caring about us as people. You have helped me to grow not only as a teacher but as a person and I am extraordinarily grateful for that. Good luck in your future endeavors and don’t be a stranger.

Thanksfor beingan Eagleinso many capacities. Best of luck as yousoarto your next adventure.
Vanessa and I have been friends since our St Francis days with many memories of Taco Pete and slumber parties. We were in StuCo, cheer, and the Carroll Herald together in the days of typing all articles on a justifying typewriter and laying out all the copies onto proof sheets. She taught some of my kids at Kapaun and even gave a well-deserved “jug” (detention) to my daughter. I think it caused her more angst than it did me. Bishop Carroll and the diocese have been so lucky to have her for these many years! I am blessed to call her my friend.
~Mary Kay (Eckberg) RottThis may be the end of a chapter, but...it’s
Vanessa she is strong in her Catholic faith I hope the best for her.

~Mark BergerI’m really grateful to Vanessa for being a supportive presence over the years. She would frequently reach out in smallwaystohelpmefeel“seen.”There would be a magnet with a quote about books in my mailbox, or a text message about a KU game, or a wine glass with my name on it from a winery of the same name. The little things mattered.
~Aubrey LogsdonCongratulations on beating me to retirement! Thank you for your support and hard work over the years. Wishing you all the peace and happiness in this new chapter ahead.

Best: The best thing about having my mom as principal was being able to see her every day in her office and grabbing a couple pieces of candy on the way out.
Worst: The worst thing about having your mother as the principal of my high school was having my grades sent to her every Monday morning so she knew if I had a bad grade even before I did.
Seth
Best: Our mother became Principal the year after I graduated. Knowing my siblings would get to spend quality time with our mom at BCCHS and at home every single day of the week...it was great!
Worst: I wouldn’t say “the worst” but I’ll never forget when the BCCHS Annual Fund deadline was coming!
Stephanie
Best: My mom canceled school when the power was out!
Worst: My mom canceled school when the power was out! JK!
Best: Seeing my mom every day and knowing I could run and ask for lunch money right before 4th hour!
Worst: Having my mother chaperone every one of my senior dances.
I have known Vanessa for over forty years. She was a student in one of my English classes in the late 70’s, and I remember fondly her milliondollar smile and the way her ponytail would swing back and forth as she walked through the halls of Bishop Carroll and strolled into my classroom. There was something about Vanessa that gave off an “air of the positive.” She just had a penchant for making people feel better. Whether it was being in the classroom, cheering for football and basketball games, or just chatting in the hallways, she had friends who smiled right along with her.
In 2007, Vanessa became principal at BC and I was a little worried about whether or not that would be awkward. I met her heading toward me, and I recognized that smile and bouncing ponytail. And everything was okay. Despite the interesting role reversal, I knew in my heart that Vanessa had made me a better teacher by being my student and by spreading her own special blend of energetic optimism.
And now, four decades since our paths met, she’s retiring. The author, Robert Louis Stevenson, once wrote, “Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds you plant.” Vanessa has touched more lives than she will ever know, and planted seeds that will produce some amazing results. I wish for her the very best as she steps into another journey. Vanessa, don’t ever lose that shining positivity that takes away the darkness, and hang onto your award-winning smile. And keep the ponytail.
