Billiard Congress of America Membership,
It has been my privilege to serve as President of the Billiard Congress of America Board of Directors the last two years. With significant support from my fellow board members, with whom I have had the pleasure of working, we have stewarded the organization through post-pandemic challenges and industry divisions. As I hand over leadership at the BCA, I am thrilled to report that we are in a sound financial and strategic position.
After two years of implementing a variety of efficiency measures that have streamlined operations and cut costs, we are experiencing a rejuvenated BCA. Our industry is united with a clear vision and plan for success moving forward. As you will see in our Annual Report, we have grown our marquee event, the annual BCA Expo, and identified ways to monetize programs that previously ran at a deficit.
I appreciate the time I have spent with BCA's CEO, Shane Tyree, over my tenure. Shane has been instrumental in our turnaround; his ability to identify means to monetize events and bring people together is a gift. He has been with the organization through thick and thin, providing a historical understanding of our industry and a clear plan to continue moving us forward.
As I complete my two terms, I reflect upon our efforts to create an industry group that is accountable to its membership and represents the qualities we all strive to uphold as business professionals. We have improved our operations, worked to increase the number of cue sports participants and customers, and provided a transparent reporting model to better serve our membership.
To you, the BCA membership, I extend my deepest appreciation. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as President and for your membership in the BCA Family. We represent a historic global industry with a phenomenal opportunity to grow our businesses and sport into the future.
Please enjoy this Expo Edition of the BCA Insider. As always, it contains industry insights and suggestions for improving profitability. This edition also has all the information you need to prepare for a productive and profitable trip to Las Vegas and the BCA Expo in March.

Billiard retailers understand theirs is a unique venture. With a blend of specialty products, customer engagement and an unconventional sales cycle, many retailers in this field face challenges that demand innovative solutions.
Enter Artificial Intelligence (AI) – a groundbreaking technology ready to transform the landscape not just for billiard retailers but for the entire industry. Although it might seem too futuristic to some, AI can enhance various aspects of billiard retailing, ensuring businesses thrive in an increasingly competitive environment.
One way that AI is starting to make a difference, and will be something of a norm in the next decade, is with personal customer engagement.
Imagine walking into a billiard store where the first greeting you receive is from a virtual shopping assistant, powered by generative AI. These virtual assistants are designed to provide personalized service that mirrors the expertise of seasoned staff – without the delays caused by customer influx or staff limitations. For instance, as soon as a customer enters the store or visits the website, the AI can ask about their skill level, preferred furniture styles and even their budget.
“Welcome! How can I assist you today?” says the virtual assistant. A beginner looking to purchase their first cue would receive a different set of recommendations than a competitive player seeking high-end equipment. The AI, equipped with rich datasets on customer preferences and product specifications, can effortlessly match customers with cues, tables or accessories that suit their needs.
By focusing on individual preferences, retailers create an experience that deepens customer engagement and increases satisfaction. In this way, the AI enhances the traditional retail model, ensuring that each interaction feels bespoke and valued.
Take, for example, a local billiard store that adopted this technology. The owner noticed that many customers were overwhelmed by the choices available. After integrating the AI assistant, he found that sales increased by 25 percent within the first quarter. The AI assistant guided customers through a quick questionnaire and offered recommendations designed for their skill level, eventually enabling them to make more informed purchases.
Moreover, the AI-driven assistant could learn which products customers identified as “favorites,” dynamically adjusting its
Today’s consumers expect immediate responses, and AI-powered chatbots fulfill this expectation by providing information on-demand. Retailers can implement chatbots on their websites or within their customer service platforms to guide potential buyers throughout the purchasing process.
Consider implementing interactive features that enable customers to explore various accessories and pool table configurations interactively. An AI-driven tool could allow prospective buyers to manipulate the elements in their space, evaluating how different materials and colors complement their existing décor. By integrating such features, retailers can transform the typical shopping experience into an engaging event, drawing in customers and persuading them to arrive at confident purchase decisions.
Inventory management is also crucial, especially for high-ticket items like billiard tables or specialty cues. Having the right product available at the right time not only increases customer satisfaction but also enhances profitability.
AI can analyze historical purchasing trends and forecast demand based on various variables, including seasonality and local events. For instance, gaining insights into which types of products are popular during specific times of the year – like holiday gatherings or summer pool parties – enables the retailer to manage stock levels more effectively.
recommendations based on real-time analytics. This adaptability not only improved satisfaction rates but solidified the store’s reputation as a go-to destination for billiard enthusiasts.
One of the significant barriers to purchasing billiard tables, cues and accessories online is the inability to visualize how these items will fit into a customer’s home. Enter AI-powered visualization tools.
Through augmented reality (AR), customers can see how a billiard table will look in their game room before making the purchase. Using a smartphone or tablet, they can superimpose images of various table styles and colors in their actual space. This technology allows them to change dimensions, colors, and even styles with ease, helping eliminate doubts about their purchases.
Retailers can take this a step further by using custom room layouts generated by AI, allowing customers to play around with different furniture arrangements as if their game room were a physical showroom. By embracing AI in product visualization, billiard retailers can enhance customer confidence, ensuring that purchases are less likely to lead to regret.
Imagine being able to adjust pricing for specific products in real-time based on the inventory you have available and the demand you project. Reduced overstock not only saves money but helps maintain a fresh and appealing product range.
While traditional inventory management often relied on guesswork, AI optimizes stock levels, ensuring fewer unsold products collect dust on shelves. Additionally, retailers can respond rapidly to changing market conditions, making data-driven decisions that align with emerging customer preferences.
A successful implementation can be seen in a regional billiard retailer who used AI-powered tools to analyze sales data. By understanding consumer behavior, they could anticipate the demand for limited-edition cues that typically saw spikes during specific months. This forecasting precision resulted in a 30 percent reduction in overstocked merchandise, while concurrently increasing the sales of sought-after products.
This operational efficiency means that cash flow improves, allowing for reinvestment into the business – be it expanding the product line or improving marketing efforts.
In the digital age, engaging content can significantly influence consumer behavior. However, creating consistent, quality content can be a time-consuming task. Enter generative AI.
With AI tools that generate product descriptions, social media posts and how-to guides, billiard retailers can keep their content pipeline full while also customizing it to match unique customer segments. For instance, retailers can showcase luxury cues for competitive players or offer family bundles tailored to the preferences that AI has identified through data analysis.
This approach not only allows retailers to address diverse customer needs but also enhances brand perception, positioning them as knowledgeable entities within the billiard community. Generative AI tools can also assist in real-time, allowing retailers to react quickly to gaming trends, local events, or changes in product availability.
Consider a seasonal campaign promoting specific cue brands. Retailers can use AI to analyze past sales data, customer reviews, and social media interactions to identify the best-performing products from that particular line. Using this data, they could develop tailored marketing messages or social media posts targeting specific demographics interested in playing styles.
By employing AI in content creation, billiard retailers can enhance their brand visibility while ensuring that customers receive timely information about their offerings.
Also for online customers, they could be shopping late at night when no staff is available. They may have questions about the difference between two
types of cues or need help navigating custom order forms. AI chatbots are activated in real-time to answer queries, provide recommendations, and facilitate purchases.
For instance, by inputting their hand size, preferred grip, and playing style, customers can receive tailored recommendations without the need for human guidance. This technology not only improves customer experience but encourages online interactions, increasing the likelihood of completed sales.
By ensuring that customers feel supported – regardless of the time of day – retailers cultivate trust and loyalty, making it more likely that customers return for future purchases.
Once a customer makes a purchase, the relationship doesn’t end there. AI can contribute significantly to after-sales support, particularly when it comes to maintenance and care for billiard tables and cues.
AI-powered maintenance systems, equipped with sensors and historical data, can predict potential issues before they escalate. For example, it can determine when a pool table might need repairs or when a cue tip is likely nearing the end of its life. Retailers can proactively reach out to customers to offer maintenance services, ensuring their products remain in top condition and fostering customer loyalty.
For retailers who offer extended maintenance warranties or services, implementing predictive maintenance technology could amplify customer satisfaction. By routinely checking in with customers about their equipment, retailers not only affirm that they care for their customers but also open doors for additional service opportunities.
Understanding customer segments is essential for targeted marketing. AI can analyze purchasing habits and behavioral data, allowing billiard retailers to customize their marketing strategies more effectively.
For instance, AI can reveal a growing segment of competitive players looking for high-end cues. The retailer can then craft marketing campaigns focusing on these premium products. Alternatively, a trend may emerge among families purchasing pool tables for recreational use, prompting promotional bundles that cater specifically to this market.
By leveraging data-driven insights, billiard retailers can focus their efforts on the most promising customer segments, ensuring their marketing dollars are well spent.
While the benefits of AI in billiard retailing are clear, implementation might feel overwhelming. The key is starting small. Identifying a particular area for pilot testing – such as inventory management or enhancing customer engagement with virtual assistants – enables retailers to assess the impact of AI without risking heavy investments.
Once the initial pilot has been successfully integrated, retailers can gradually expand their AI use cases. From there, they can broaden the scope to include advanced predictive analytics, smarter pricing strategies, and sophisticated customer interaction systems. The pathway to AI adoption is progressive, allowing small establishments to reap big rewards without the burden of immediate operational overhaul.
Furthermore, it’s critical to ensure that your staff is on board with AI initiatives. Providing training sessions can ease the transition, allowing staff to familiarize themselves with new technologies and enhancing their overall engagement with the new systems. Engaged employees are likelier to promote innovations, boosting your chances of success.
While the transition to adopting AI may bring challenges, fostering a culture of innovation will allow billiard retail-
ers to wrangle positive outcomes. By encouraging continuous learning and being adaptable, retailers can embrace the tech-driven retail landscape with confidence.
The journey to AI adoption is one of continuous learning and adaptation. By leveraging AI to foster relationships – even post-purchase – DIY an engaging and fun consumer experience, and promoting staff efficiency, retailers can build a future that not only meets customer expectations but exceeds them.
As retailers dive into the world of AI, it’s crucial to consider the ethical implications associated with data collection and usage. When collecting customer data for personalized services, transparency is vital. Retailers need to establish trust by clearly communicating how they store, use, and protect customer information.
Additionally, retailers must ensure their AI systems support fairness, avoiding bias in product recommendations or customer engagement strategies. By carefully monitoring AI interactions, they can refine algorithms to cater to a diverse set of customer preferences and backgrounds.
The integration of AI into billiard retail is proving not just to be a technological upgrade but a fundamental transformation in how retailers understand and engage with their customers. As businesses invest in AI technologies, the focus remains clear: creating streamlined operations, enhancing customer experiences, and nurturing a community of passionate billiard enthusiasts.
In these challenging yet promising times, businesses that embrace AI will find themselves not merely keeping up with trends but setting them – this is where true success lies. The potential for AI to revolutionize billiard retailing remains limitless. The tools to enhance personalized shopping interactions, optimize dynamic pricing models, and empower strong customer relationships can lead to impactful change.
With AI driving these changes, the industry is primed for unprecedented growth and innovation. Billiard retailers are on the cusp of a new frontier – a landscape shaped by technological prowess and consumer engagement that embodies convenience, satisfaction, and loyalty.
In doing so, the future of billiard retailing is not only bright but positioned to champion customer-centric values that will truly resonate, solidifying the relationship between retailer and consumer while illuminating exciting avenues for growth and profitability. As the billiard world continues its evolution, AI stands ready as the catalyst for a new era.
When Sofia Mast won the Girls Junior World Championship in New Zealand last year, the 16-year-old from Wesley Chapel, Florida, became the first U.S.born player to take home the top spot in 17 years.
“That was my third time attending the event; the first two I was still really nervous, but for this one, I felt much more comfortable,” she says. “Of course, the time difference was tough for us American players, and my coach found us a place to play 24/7, whereas the first two years we didn’t have a practice table. So, going into the tournament, since I knew what it was like playing two years prior, I was ready.”
By Keith Loria
Mast made it to the finals last year as well, finishing in second place, and this time, she was going to do what it took to win.
“I was eating breakfast with my coach, and Allison Fisher gave me a call, which was very cool, and she calmed me down going into my match,” she says. “She’s been an inspiration for me, so I was very happy to get to talk to her. She taught me some breathing techniques, which really helped.”
In the finals, Mast was up against fellow American Savannah Easton, who defeated Shirin Volery and Wang WanLing, respectively, in the semifinals.
“When it was 4-4, Savannah scratched on the break and I made a third out to get on the hill, and I felt that gave me the confidence to go in and finish it,” Mast says. “I remember the last ball was a long-straight 10-ball, and I took a deep breath, and the feeling of shooting it in was crazy. I never felt that way. Everything that I put in to get there and the practice was all worth it.”
And her victory was just the beginning of what was a memorable 2024, as Mast would go undefeated in both the women’s and juniors’ tournaments in Denver, Colorado, adding two more impressive titles to her trophy case.
Among her other top billiard moments were going undefeated in all three events to win Triple Crown JIC 2022, becoming the youngest player to win the Texas Open at the age of 15, and taking home the silver medal at the 2023 Junior Worlds Event in Austria.
“I feel like this past year has been the best for me, but in 2023, I won the Women’s Texas Open, and that was a big thrill,” Mast says. “I played Savannah in the finals of that one as well.”
Known as the “Pink Dagger” to her friends and co-competitors, Mast discovered a love for pool at the age of 10 when she used to go see her dad, JD Mast, in action at his league matches.
“My dad played in a Monday APA league for fun, and I would practice at a table while I was there. I started to enjoy the game and really thought it was a lot of fun,” Mast says.
It wasn’t long before the younger Mast was part of her dad’s team, joining a ju-
nior 9-ball league run by Jeanette Lee and excelling in tournaments around Florida and the U.S.
“Learning from Jeanette, one of the best female players of all time, was really cool,” Mast says. “I would go to her house and get a lesson, and she taught me for hours. She just has so much knowledge and teaches very well. I still have the videos from those lessons that I watch.”
Today, Mast is taught by noted instructor Samm Diep-Vidal. Working with her coach, Mast has developed a strong focus on technique, mental toughness, and nutrition as she prepares for the demands of upcoming competitions and looks to a future as a professional in the sport.
While she notes there are definitely rivalries among her fellow billiard competitors, for the most part, everyone gets along and supports each other both in person and on social media.
“We would always help each other set up shots when we had the practice table and would often do drills together, so the USA players get along,” she says.
Mast has a busy docket of tournaments for 2025 and is looking forward to defending her title at the World Championships later this year.
“Samm and I are going to work on more of my mechanics and try to get to that next level and be more consistent in my
game,” she says. “I’ve beaten a lot of great competitors this past year, which has given me the confidence that I can compete against the top pros in the world.”
You can find Mast practicing on the billiard table daily, working on shots and just bettering her game in little ways.
“Samm will give me drills to do or give me shots I need to work on,” she says. “It could be something I played wrong or had trouble with; she’s very knowledgeable about things like that, so she will give me those things to work on, and then when we are together, we will go over everything.”
When not at tournaments or practicing, Mast hangs out with her family, doing escape rooms or playing games. She also likes to bake, and that’s another big interest she has for the future.
Mast thanks her family and sponsors –including Predator Cues, HOW, Jam Up Apparel, Jamison Daniels, Samm Diep, and Seamless Quality Solutions – for helping her live out her dream.
“I’m a very competitive person, and it’s really fun to compete in tournaments,” Mast says. “The people that I meet are really cool, and playing the game has taught me a lot in my life. Pool is mental, and I have to keep myself in the game, so it’s taught me how to keep my brain stable, and it’s always taught me to stay fit because you have to have the stamina to work those long days. I definitely want to be known as one of the top players and would like to win the World 10-Ball.”

It wouldn’t be an Expo without booths.
Among the highlights of every BCA Expo are the booths where companies in the billiard and home recreation industry offer demonstrations of their new and most popular products. These booths are where connections are made and where the industry meets to interact with current and potential clients.
The Expo is all about bringing industry professionals from around the country together for a showcase of cutting-edge products, the best equipment and essential services. The booths that serve as various companies’ home base during the Expo help people meet up and fulfill the goal of learning about new developments, generating leads and strengthening existing relationships.
“The BCA Trade Show is the perfect place to show new and existing customers our level of quality of our products and what sets us apart from our competition,” says Wes Bond of Koda Sports. “Networking and socializing at the show always help with strengthening new and old relationships. This is a great opportunity to get to know your customers better, which is invaluable when working with them throughout the year.”
Dan Bourget, owner and managing partner of Olhausen Billiards, says that Olhausen’s goals with its booth are to stand out, make a splash, promote American-made products, and team up with other American companies.
“Once again, we hope to band together with other manufacturers that feel being made in America is a big part of their mission,” Bourget says. “Some of the best companies in our industry will be high-
lighted in our main booth. At Olhausen, we don’t feel like we are in competition with the other American-made manufacturers, we think win-win.”
For many other companies that require long lead times to manufacture and ship long distances, this show is about writing orders.
“Although we love writing orders, we don’t need massive commitment at the show,” Bourget says. “We love to meet our dealers as well as, share our vision, get their feedback and continue to build relationships. We are more than happy for our dealers to place orders during the year. We can respond quickly from our factory near Nashville, Tennessee with product that is custom configured in one of a hundred ways for that particular customer.”
A good booth should catch people’s attention, draw them in, and offer them a fun and interesting way to learn about your company, what it offers and how you may be able to team up and improve both of your businesses.
Nick Baron, president of Brunswick Billiards Group, which includes Brunswick Billiards, Cue & Case Billiard Accessories, and American Heritage Billiards, says the Expo, and its booth, gives it a perfect forum for celebrating Brunswick’s 180th anniversary, as well as its products.
“We will be rolling out several new commercial pieces; the Gold Crown 7, the Tournament Elite Bar table, and
a line of commercial pool room furniture,” he says.
He adds that one of Brunswick’s key goals for the Expo is to strengthen its existing relationships.
“The show is really the only time we see some dealers in person,” Baron says. “We love new faces and new entrants into the billiard world, but really seeing our existing dealers feels great, and I always leave feeling like we just left seeing old friends. Deals are always being done, some small, some major.”
At last year’s Expo, Olhausen showcased some of its cutting-edge designs and capabilities, including gold foil highly carved tables, lipstick red and gloss black designs, and pastel-colored outdoor products.
“We even featured a whiskey barrel themed shuffleboard and a pool table with a built-in safe called the Sportsman; it was really an attempt to show our creativity and extensive capabilities,” Bourget says.
Visitors to Olhausen’s booth this year can expect the company to highlight a broad range of mainstream products, from its competitively priced, all American-made line of products, all the way to its highest-end, custom-designed, oneoff “Olhausen Unlimited” series.
“We will show how we make it easier for dealers to sell to designers and commercial accounts using our new ICON series of customization friendly products and collateral material,” Bourget says. “The range of offerings and customization capabilities, coupled with reasonable prices and lead times, will be a game changer for the industry.”
For 2025, Koda's Wes Bond has expanded its booth, so that it can spotlight its new cues, and also give people a preview of some products before they are released.
“We will be featuring new cue lineups for Xcel, Koda, K2 and Bull Carbon, as well
as our highly anticipated Bull Breaker and Bull Jump cues, which will be on display before their release dates,” Bond says. “We will also be showing our new Outdoor/Indoor Foosball table, new Lucite Foosball Table, new 7’ Clash Steel Commercial Pool Table in Shadow Black and much more from cases to accessories.”
Design expert Allison Snow, CMO at Streampoint Solutions, says your booth’s design should reflect the style of your company’s products. For example, she notes that billiard tables have two iconic looks – classic and modern, and a billiard company’s booth should reflect whichever style their products fit.
“This will be a big design decision that depends a lot on your brand,” Snow says. “If your brand doesn’t dictate which, lean into classic dark wood, vintage textures, and dim lighting for a sophisticated vibe.”
A sophisticated vibe also conjures images of leather chairs, and muted lighting. With the right touches, your booth can capture that aesthetic.
“Leverage the iconic look of billiard tables like felt textures, green, blue, or red, wooden finishes, and leather accents as a foundation for design,” Snow says. “If you opt for modern, lean instead into the sleek, neon-accented designs with bold colors to create a contemporary, dynamic feel.”
You can also incorporate color schemes and the look of numbers from billiard balls into your design.
“Use oversized, stylized versions as props, lighting fixtures, or your booth’s signage,” she says. “Reflect the clean lines and geometric patterns of billiards – triangle racks, diamond-shaped table pattern, or the placement of balls on the felt in your booth layout, graphics, or materials.”
Baron says that Brunswick always seeks to change its booth from year to year, to feature new items and showcase graphics.
“It is also a balance of cost, the shows keep getting more and more expensive, therefore we must write more business in order to justify the expense,” he says. “We start planning our booth very soon after the last show ends. It might just be discussions or a debrief of what worked and what didn’t work but always planning for the next year.”
Snow says that technologies and interactive elements, such as augmented reality, can bring exciting and unexpected elements to booths.
“Use AR for attendees to see a 3D model of a specific table tailored to their preferences – features, sizes, or configurations – and envision it in a space,” she says. “This is inspired by Amazon’s ‘see this in your space feature.”
She also suggests creating an AR-enable scavenger hunt that allows visitors to your booth to collect clues and items around your both.
“This would work well with a number/ color cue balls because they are small enough to hide,” Snow says.
You want to make your booth stand out for a few reasons, including, of course,
to encourage people to come by and check out what you’re doing. But you also want to create a memorable experience, which helps keep your business in people’s minds.
Bond says that planning for the 2025 Expo began right after the 2024 show ended, with a review of what worked and what can be done better.
“You must book your space a year in advance,” he says. “Months of prep and work go into a two-day show. You have to start thinking of product placement, specials to entice customers, as well as ways to help customers visualize a year’s worth of planning with your product to maximize your product sales in their stores. The way your booth flows when your customers walk through matters to help optimize time and keep your customers engaged.”
Bourget says Olhausen’s booth stands out by having compelling products on view that can help its brick-and-mortar dealers become more successful.
“Our lane is great, with customizable designs, at reasonable price points, with quick delivery,” he says.
Another element that Olhausen brings to its booth each year is fun, and that fun is achieved in a way that fits the company’s mission. Last year, Olhausen gave away an Indian Motorcycle to an attendee who entered a drawing by following the “American-Made Trail,” which consisted of booths hosted by American-made manufacturers.
“The best part was watching one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet, Scott Mullen with Peter’s Billiards, win the Indian motorcycle – and Josh Gibson, from Boynton Billiards win the Gibson guitar!” Bourget says. “The joy we all experienced watching his reaction and tears made the entire trip worthwhile and reminded us that at the end of the day, it’s the people and relationships that make business worth doing.”
And he promises that the fun will continue because Olhausen has some activities in mind for 2025.
“But we don’t want to ruin the surprise too early!” Bourget says.
One of the biggest advantages to setting up a booth at the Expo is that it gives people a chance to share their newest and most popular products in a handson, face-to-face way. Online research, apps, emails, and even phone calls can’t quite replace actually interacting with a product and being able to ask questions with an expert.
“Getting hands-on products or seeing something in person is extremely important,” says Baron. “We can talk until we’re blue in the face about features and benefits, but until the customer feels the difference or sees the beauty in a cue or table in person, that is what really sells.”
When asked if demonstrations at the Expo are helpful, Bourget is quick to respond, “Of course.”
“Our dealers are well aware of Olhausen’s world-class quality build and finish, but it helps for them to see and touch some of the latest designs,” he says. “We also want to explain to them, in person, our selling philosophies that they can bring back to their showrooms to properly differentiate Olhausen from the sea of other brands.”
Legacy branded products are only available through our dealer network or legacybilliards.com. We do NOT allow multiple exclusive dealers in the same market.
Legacy dealers receive up to 75% commission from online table sales making Legacy’s website an additional sales channel for each dealer, not a competing one.
Protecting MAP (Minimum Advertised Pricing) protects your business. We monitor all websites to ensure MAP is adhered to by everyone.
Stop by our booth , #1349, and mention this ad to receive a FREE Vera cue rack!
Bond says that allowing people to touch and feel products at an Expo booth is priceless, and it offers an opportunity to showcase Koda’s quality and attention to detail, for pool cues, game tables, and everything else.
“This is part of why we strongly encourage our customers to come to the BCA Show,” he says. “When you’re able to demo products and hear our pitch while holding the products, it really resonates with them versus just hearing us explain over the phone. This also translates to techniques and/or talking points that will help them close more deals on their showroom floor. We also get feedback immediately and still have time to make adjustments which helps plan for the season now that the show is earlier in March.”
Equally important to setting up an engaging and informative booth for your company, is taking time to explore and visit other booths, where you’ll have the opportunity to introduce yourself to representatives from other companies –including people who are new to the industry – and catch up with friends and contacts you’ve been collaborating with for decades.
“I will visit as many booths as I can,” Bourget says. “I am relatively new to this industry and try to be friends with everyone. I would like us to be able to pick up the phone and call each other if any need arises. Already, in my short time in the industry I have met some great people that have become personal friends. I really love the billiards industry and can’t imagine doing anything better at this stage in my life.”
Baron says that visiting booths is essential to one of Brunswick's major goals of any Expo or trade show, to build new partnerships.
“We always forge new relationships at the BCA show,” he says. “Opening yourself up and creating a bigger network is super important. The only way to do that for me is during show setup by walking
around and chatting up competitors or colleagues, because once the show starts it is too busy to go to other booths.”
Snow points out there are steps you can take that not only enhance your experience at the Expo, but that can make an impact on social media in ways that can have long-term effects. This includes creating setups for photo opps (with your products, of course), so that visitors can take pictures for sharing on social media.
“People love selfies and any good opportunity to post to Instagram,” she says. “Include a billiard-inspired backdrop or oversized prop that makes people want to take photos. For example, a giant cue or pool ball with your branding. To uplevel this, consider an AR photo booth. Create AR photo opportunities where attendees interact with a branded scene or virtual object. For instance, attendees could ‘stand’ on a virtual stage or interact with a giant AR version of the product.”
Companies put a lot of time, thought, and energy into their booths, and it pays off, in lots of ways. And for Bourget, there are lots of different measures of success at the Expo.
“We knew that our booth last year was going to be a big hit,” he says. “The products drew so much emotion. I told my folks that I didn’t really care if we sold a thing at the show, I just wanted people to know that Olhausen is back! My goal was for nobody to be neutral about our booth. Hate a product or love it, but by all means, remember it and talk about it – mission accomplished!”
Triangle Billiards & Barstools isn’t just a store; it’s a family legacy.
It’s a legacy that Joe Fiscella started 45 years ago and continues today, with his children, Charlene and Joseph, carrying on the family business at its location in Tustin, California, representing the culmination of Joe’s dreams and everything he worked for.
That location, which Triangle’s website calls “The Largest Store for Pool Tables and Gaming Accessories in the 11 Western States,” is home to one of the nation’s leading Brunswick dealers. It is also a destination for an array of pool

tables, air hockey tables, shuffleboards, foosball tables and other games, as well as bar stools, custom cues and cases, jukeboxes and a wide selection of pool accessories, including balls, triangles and pool table lights.
The business started in 1978 when Joe began selling pool tables and waterbeds –a “weird mix,” as his children note – on Main Street in Orange, California.
“He then moved to a different location in Orange, eliminated the sale of waterbeds, and evolved to pool tables, shuffleboards, custom cues and all gaming products,” Charlene says.
Joe would eventually expand Triangle to three stores in California before opening the 17,000-square-foot retail “super showroom” in Tustin about eight years ago. It was, his kids say, Joe’s “pride and joy.”
Joe Fiscella passed away in 2021, and since then, Triangle has been run by Charlene and Joseph. Not surprisingly, both of them have been involved in the store since they were children. Char-
lene would work part-time for her dad, doing bookkeeping and filing when needed, especially during the Christmas season. However, a job with the City of Anaheim kept her away from the store for quite a while until she came back about a year ago.
Joseph recalls being in junior high and high school, taking the bus to work with his father and eventually working full-time at Triangle. When he was in his thirties, he entered the e-cigarette business and eventually opened his shop but continued to help Joe on weekends.
“I was always the backup for the backup for my dad,” he says. “My dad was a machine, and since taking over the store, I have to give him more credit than I ever gave him, which was already a lot. But when he passed, there was no way in the world we were just going to fold. We didn’t want to let the legacy go; the family has almost 50 years in this.”
While Charlene and Joseph both knew their father had worked tremendously hard, loved the store and gave it everything he had (he even manufactured a product that reduced wear and tear on felt), they were still surprised to take over the store and realize just how hard Joe had worked.
“It was eye-opening to realize how much my father sacrificed,” Charlene says. “He was married to the business, which you have to be, and he had a passion for it. If you don’t have that passion, you’re just not going to be happy doing it. It was life-changing for me, and it has definitely given me a bigger passion for the game and for the whole industry.
“The thing in Joseph’s and my favor is that our dad left a very well-oiled business here. It’s just something you have to maintain and adjust with the times, but he really did such a phenomenal job with this Triangle business that it’s easier for me to step in. Like Joseph said, our dad was a machine. He got into the industry and ran with it; he was just so good.”
Triangle Billiards & Barstools isn’t just a family-owned business; it’s a business dedicated to bringing families together.
“One of his prime motivating factors for staying in the industry was to provide people with family time in their homes,” Charlene says of her father. “He put in over 50 years in the business before his passing in 2021. My brother and I have taken over the family business, and this is a true family business that both my brother, mother, and I have worked at, on and off, for the last 35 years. The love our father had for the billiard industry, along with his immeasurable knowledge and regard for the game itself, as well as his unwavering dedication to his customers, is what made Triangle one of the most respected and well-known retail stores in the billiard industry.”
Charlene notes that pool tables and cues are by far Triangle’s most popular products. Among the trends the store is seeing is customers leaning toward carbon fiber shafts.
“We’re also noticing an increase in 7-foot pool tables for homes and more and more customers buying dining tops for their tables,” she says. “There also seems to be an increase in customers looking to go out and play snooker and shuffleboard.”
Pool is very popular in the Orange County and Los Angeles County areas, and according to Charlene, all kinds of people are playing the game there.
“Our local spots are always packed with waitlists to play,” she says. “Pool is a sport where you can dress up or dress
down. It’s perfect for a family, an outing with a date, or just two friends looking to grab a drink and play a game, as well as for serious players.”
And Triangle Billiards & Barstools has something for every kind of player, from people who are picking up a cue for the first time to world-class players.
“We have a big mix of customers,” she says. “We have people just starting to play the game, families looking for something for their homes to enjoy family time, celebrities, and professional pool players. Just the other day, we had [professional pool player] Bernardo Chavez (King Kong) come in to buy a case.”
The Fiscella family is also dedicated to creating a welcoming atmosphere at Triangle and helping people learn about and enjoy billiards. Triangle’s website, for example, offers rules for 8-ball and 9-ball, along with explanations of the differences between billiards, pool, and snooker. The website also provides a helpful guide on dimensions and pool table sizes, including a chart with a “pool table size formula” and a “pool table room chart” to help people determine the perfectly sized table for their space.
“You would be surprised how many times a day we get calls from people wanting to know the rules of 8-ball or
if you must play the cue ball from the kitchen if it is scratched on the break,” Charlene says. “Or just general questions to settle a dispute on rules. Room charts are also something customers inquire about, wanting to know the size table they can fit into their room daily.”
Joe was not only innovative; he also knew how to have fun. He took great pride in his “pool table car,” which he created with his friend Vinny Bergeman. It’s a 2001 Monte Carlo that is customized to hold a pool table that can be removed and played on.
“It was a project for them, something they had thought of, and they just ran
“ WE TRY TO GIVE
with it,” Joseph said. “They chopped it, added a nine-foot Gold Crown to it, and brought it to car shows; it was even at the Playboy Mansion.”
The car had been inactive for a while, but Joseph and Charlene found someone who could service it, and it is now back in action.
“The pool table car is incredible,” Charlene says. “The pool table detaches from it, so you can play all around it. It’s a traveling pool table that goes up to 100 miles per hour!”
Triangle also provides expert repair and maintenance services. The Triangle team includes experts who can install, move, and repair tables, repair cues, and even design a game room. The store is fully licensed and insured and has a reputation for offering quality and affordable repair services, including moves, assembly, refelting, leveling slate repair, and pocket, bumper, and felt replacement.
“Our service end of Triangle is generally booked out two to three weeks at a time all year,” Charlene says. “We have had our service manager for over 15 years, and he is truly an expert in the field. I feel like the key to good service and re-
pair lies within the individuals we employ. Being personable as well as being able to explain each step while providing exceptional service is crucial.”
The Triangle team is also dedicated to making a difference in its community, including making donations to senior centers in the area, to support senior activities.
“We try to give back to the community in many ways,” Charlene says. “We also partner with the Boys & Girls Club and the Make-a-Wish Foundation and donate products to both of those entities. We also offer discounts to all BCA and APA league players.”
Charlene and Joseph clearly know their stuff and are proving themselves to be excellent stewards of Triangle Billiards & Barstools, but they will always attribute the business’ success to their father.
“Our father laid the groundwork with his dedication and family values and turned Triangle into his second family,” Charlene says. “His philosophy was that when you walked in the door, you were now part of the Triangle family. By my brother and me continuing to honor
him by following the same philosophies, we have been able to carry on his legacy and continue his success.”
Charlene and Joseph have also dealt with their fair share of challenges in recent years.
“The past few years have been drastically different year to year,” Charlene says. “During COVID, we were busier than ever. We faced many challenges during COVID and with the ever-changing inflation on all products. One way we tackle that is by taking advantage of any discounts given by our vendors and then passing those savings down to our customers.”
The challenges of the past few years haven’t kept Joe Fiscella’s kids from succeeding. In fact, Triangle Billiards & Barstools continues to grow, giving them a tremendous sense of pride and instilling even more admiration for their father.
“I want to make my dad proud,” Charlene says. “He really put his blood, sweat, tears, and a lot of his life into this. It’s a big family thing, and hopefully, it will pass down to my children and to Joseph’s children. It’s something that can just continue. We bring families together. Often, when I’m selling a table, I’ll tell a story about my dad and how he had a passion for bringing families together and letting them have family time at home.”
For Joseph, keeping Triangle open honors his dad, but the business has also been an important part of his life, and he just can’t imagine closing the store’s doors.
“Dad put so many years into this; to just shut it down and sell everything would be a disgrace to my father,” he says. “We decided to give this a run, and it’s been exciting because we’ve actually hit some numbers my father was trying to get to, and we’ve achieved some record-breaking numbers. That was really satisfying for me, and I felt a strong sense of, ‘Here, Dad, we did it.’”

By Keith Loria
Now in his third year as CEO of the BCA, Shane Tyree continues to make lasting changes designed to improve things for members both now and in the future.
With another strong BCA Expo upon us, we sat down with Tyree to discuss what’s ahead.
What are your goals for the BCA in 2025?
The future of the BCA lies in our commitment to enhancing the consumer experience at our key events – the BCA Expo, the Junior Nationals, and the North American Championships. Our focus remains on continuously improving attendee engagement and satisfaction, ensuring these events evolve to meet the highest standards. By elevating the overall experience, we aim to drive growth and strengthen our organization’s impact within the community.
What is your long-term vision for the BCA, and how do you see the organization evolving over the next decade?
Our goal is to expand our summer sporting event while establishing ourselves as the official governing body for billiards
in North America. Beyond the summer event, we aspire to develop a tour or series of events that provide a competitive platform for North American players. By doing so, we aim to cultivate a deeper talent pool and elevate the level of competition on the international stage.
How is the BCA planning to attract and engage younger players to ensure the future popularity and growth of billiards?
We are prioritizing not only junior qualifier events but also the expansion of our junior state championships. Last year, we successfully hosted over 20 junior state championships, and this year, we aim to increase that number significantly.
With our strong commitment to junior development, we are introducing a new event – the Challenge of the Junior Champions. This competition will feature four teams: two teams from the U.S., along with one team each from Mexico and Canada. Designed as a crucial steppingstone between Junior Nationals and Worlds, this event will provide junior players with a high-intensity, international-level competition experience, preparing them to excel on the world stage.
How does the BCA plan to expand its presence and influence internationally, especially in countries where billiards has a growing interest?
We are actively working toward formally establishing an actual North American Cuesports Federation, strengthening our partnerships with Canada and Mexico while seeking further expansion. Additionally, we are focused on solidifying the organizational structure in Puerto Rico, supporting its development into an independent federation. Our overarching goal is to unify North American billiards under the BCA umbrella, fostering a cohesive and collaborative framework for the sport's growth across the region.
How does the BCA plan to forge new partnerships and sponsorships to support tournaments and grassroots programs in the future?
The Billiard Congress of America’s primary objective is to cultivate the American talent pool and elevate the perception of billiards as a recognized sport here in the United States. Achieving this milestone would serve as a tipping point for our sport’s growth and legitimacy nationwide. However, developing top-tier talent presents its own challenges. Our mission is to demonstrate that pool and cuesports is not merely a recreational game played in bars, but a competitive, skillbased sport deserving of greater recognition and support.
What steps is the BCA taking to promote diversity and inclusion within the billiard community, ensuring that players from all backgrounds feel welcome and supported?
Our goal is to expand the sport’s reach and introduce it to as many people as possible. Last year, we launched the North American Wheelchair Championships and, in collaboration with the WPA and Joy, hosted the Wheelchair Championships in Los Angeles this past December. We remain committed to the growth of the wheelchair division within our association.
As part of our broader strategy, we are actively working to integrate billiards into multisport events. Recently, we established a partnership with the Colorado Senior Games, ensuring that participants have the opportunity to compete in billiards and qualify for the National Senior Games.
In what ways is the BCA planning to promote billiards as a competitive sport to a broader audience, possibly through media partnerships or social media strategies?
Our research indicates that pool and billiards is played by more people worldwide than soccer, football, and basketball. Our priority is to ensure that the sport receives the visibility and support it deserves by collaborating with as many partners as possible to promote its growth and recognition.
We are currently working with our current partners to develop a larger social media presence for the events and players we work with. Additionally, the BCA has recently hired a dedicated media manager, Ben Sutherland, to help us get more recognition and awareness across all media platforms.
What do you view as the biggest challenges facing the billiards community today, and how does the BCA intend to address these challenges moving forward?
In the United States, one of our greatest challenges is shifting the perception of pool and billiards from a casual game to a recognized sport. Overcoming this mindset is essential for the sport’s growth and legitimacy. For over 75 years, this association has faced the ongoing question of whether the professional game directly contributes to the sales of pool tables. Bridging the gap between the industry’s trade and competitive play sectors remains a key priority, and we continue to explore innovative ways to strengthen this connection.
about the 2025 BCA Expo?
Currently the BCA Expo is on track to be at full capacity on the expo floor, with an energy and excitement surpassing previous years – something I am truly looking forward to. Attendees can expect a vibrant and engaging experience, reinforcing our commitment to continuous growth and development.
This year, we are reintroducing the Business of Billiards seminars on the opening day, providing valuable industry insights. All attendees will have the opportunity to gain actionable knowledge that they can take back to their businesses, fostering long-term success.
Why are you optimistic about what’s ahead?
Over the past three years, I have observed more growth in the sport than in the preceding fifteen. The surge in investment and enthusiasm within the competitive pool and billiards arena has been truly remarkable, positioning the future of the sport in an exceptionally promising light. It is exciting to anticipate the advancements and opportunities that will unfold for professional cue sports athletes in the coming five to ten years. Our objective is to harness this momentum to drive increased sales of pool tables and home leisure products, a challenge I am eager to embrace.
Annual Report by BCA
As we prepare for the 2025 Billiard Congress of America Expo, we want to provide our membership with an overview of the state of our operations and current financial standing. As you see from the fiscal overview below, we have taken significant strides in stabilizing our fiscal position. After a post-pandemic period of anemic financial performance, we have recognized a year of financial growth and have a plan for continuing our momentum.
Under the stewardship of Philippe Singer from Predator, for the past two years we have implemented a series of efficiency measures while concurrently identifying means to maximize current activities relative to fiscal performance. We took a hard look at the state of our industry and recognized the necessity of mending fragmentation amongst our membership. With the leadership of Singer and the clear, strategic vision spelled out by our Board of Directors, we were able to unite our industry into one marquee event with a singular vision of moving all our interests forward through collaboration and teamwork.
As one observes from our financial overview below, we remain heavily reliant on our annual Expo for a significant percentage of our fiscal condition. Due to our industry reconciliation in 2024, we experienced strong exhibitor sales and
attendee turnout at our Expo. We project growth again this year but foresee potential challenges arising in 2026 due to questions related to our partner’s consideration of an event date alteration and location change.
Our dependence on the Expo reflects our organizational focus as a member-based trade industry group. Our membership has indicated that our priority should be the provision of an Expo that provides higher sales for our manufacturers and larger margins for our retailers. We will continue to prioritize the expo and identify ways to improve the event for our membership.
The BCA has experienced continued growth and success in the Professional Billiard Instructors Association (PBIA). The program features over 300 certified instructors from the United States and 18 other countries. The PBIA remains the largest international organization of certified, professional billiard instructors.
In 2024, based on feedback from our instructors, we empowered Master Instructor Rob Moreno to be an active administrator of the program. As a long-standing PBIA instructor and participant in the competitive cue sports world, Moreno brings a practical, outcome-based philosophy to the association. Moreno's generous contribution of his time has assisted the program in recognizing improved efficiency by freeing up staff time for revenue-generating efforts.
The BCA is committed to investing and developing the USA junior pool player program through a variety of initiatives from state and national championships to overseeing an instructional program (Break and Run Premium Junior Training Program) that is free to any junior player upon request.
The Billiard Education Foundation (BEF) is the vehicle the BCA uses to construct a United States National Team. In 2024, the BEF held its 36th annual Junior National Pool Championships. This event had 30 qualifying events in 22 states and had 35 of the 50 United States represented in the annual competition.
We have also been able to utilize the resources associated with hosting our Junior National Pool Championship to provide competitive and amateur cue sports events that have created revenue-generating ventures for the BCA. We have plans to expand this event further to include darts and other precision-based events that represent the inventory our membership has to offer the customer.

The BCA Billiard & Home Leisure Expo is continuing its successful partnership with Amusement Expo International (AEI) for its third-straight co-located show this year. On March 19 and 20, the two industry giants will share a space at the Las Vegas Convention Center for what promises to be one of the best Expos of all time.
The BCA Expo is a premier exhibition that serves as a platform for showcasing the latest and most innovative products, cutting-edge equipment and essential services within the billiard industry. This year’s event promises to spark meaningful connections, drive valuable business leads and offer attendees unparalleled insights into the rapidly evolving industry.
“Having the show in March now allows us to offer closeouts and heavier discounted products since we’re at the end of our season, making room for new products, which will help our customers through the summer months and get them ready for the new models coming in for the fall they ordered at the BCA Expo,” says Wes Bond, CEO and president of Koda Sports. “It also gives us an opportunity to get feedback on our products and help our customers plan for the upcoming season for new and existing inventory.”
Additionally, by co-locating with AEI, attendees will also gain access to a diverse network of potential buyers, allowing for untapped market exploration and enhanced brand exposure on a global scale.
Attendees can also take part in educational seminars, diving deep into the inner workings with Predator and Olhausen, and participate in insightful panel discussions led by industry leaders, designed for retailers, room operators, and members of the Next Generation Committee.
There will also be a special Mardi Gras-themed industry party on March 19 at the Stirling Club, taking place 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., to help commemorate the opening night of the Expo.

With approximately 5.8 million junior players under the age of 24 participating in billiards across the United States, the need for a comprehensive coaching and instruction platform has never been more apparent.
In response, the Billiard Congress of America (BCA), the Professional Billiard Instructors Association (PBIA) and the Billiard Education Foundation have joined forces to establish the Break and Run Premier Junior Instructional Academy. This new initiative aims to enhance the skills and enjoyment of billiards among the country’s youth players.
The Break and Run Academy will focus on fostering the development of competitive junior pool players who are committed to improving their game.
The program will offer nationwide coaching and instruction for youth players; ongoing, personalized instruction tailored to juniors of all ages and skill levels; structured lessons provid-
ed at no cost to junior players aiming to compete; support for local coaches and instructors working with players at a competitive level; training materials, regular feedback and assessments to track participant progress; and options for regular instruction either in person or through video exchanges, such as FaceTime or Skype.
All instruction will be provided by PBIA instructors who volunteer their time as part of their commitment to furthering the sport of billiards. Seo Su-gil, the CEO of SOOP, has been elected as the third president of the Korea Billiards Federation after a competitive election against candidate Kim Gihong. The election, which took place through online voting earlier this year, saw participation from billiard enthusiasts and stakeholders across Korea.
With a professional background marked by significant contributions
to AfreecaTV, Seo is well-regarded in the industry. Since taking the helm at SOOP in 2018, he has steered the company towards prioritizing billiards content, successfully broadcasting major events such as the World Three Cushion Championship and the Billiards World Cup in partnership with the World Billiards Federation. Under his direction, the Korea Billiards Federation’s tournaments have attracted more than 20 million viewers in 2024 alone.
“We will respect various opinions and create a billiard environment where all generations can come together,” Seo says. “I also aim to foster communication and cooperation that unites all age groups. My goal is to elevate billiards beyond a mere sport by incorporating entertainment elements.”
Throughout the election campaign, Seo outlined a series of initiatives aimed at enhancing the billiards landscape in Korea. His proposals included expanding financial backing for the federation, promoting billiard tournaments linked to local governments, increasing prize money, and raising referee fees. Additionally, he stressed the importance of developing the sports program at the National Sports Festival and supporting international business initiatives related to billiard products.
His vision for the Korea Billiards Federation marks a pivotal moment for the sport in the country, signaling a focus not only on competitive excellence but also on inclusivity and community engagement.
Despite difficulties with his eyesight, 99-year-old Sidney Stein proved that age is just a number, competing earlier this year in the Tucson Senior Olympics in the sport of billiards.
The NewYork City native, who moved to Fort Huachuca, Arizona. in 1956 to work in software development, first picked up pool at the age of 87, and it’s one of his favorite activities, even though he struggles to see the numbers on the balls.
“I’m just here to play a game for fun,” Stein said at the event. “It’s a game I can do and I enjoy it very much.”
Though he started off slowly in his match, Stein soon found his rhythm, making several impressive shots in a row.
“There are two things you need to learn,” Stein says. “How to strike the ball properly and the concept of a ghost ball,” referring to the imaginary ball that helps players line up their shots.
Although he didn’t win, Stein plans to be back next year to compete again.
“I will be here at age 100,” he says.
Vietnam is rapidly establishing itself as a global hub for billiards, showcasing some of the most promising talents in the sport. As major international tournaments like Matchroom’s Hanoi Open Pool Championship and Peri’s 9-Ball Open are hosted on Vietnamese soil, two of the country’s most notable players, Nguyên Anh Tuân, better known as Tkon Nguyên, and Bui Truong An, known as An Nhiât, have signed sponsorship contracts with industry leaders Iwan Simonis and Aramith.
At 35 years old, Tkon Nguyên has become an emblematic figure of Vietnam’s passion for pool. He has clinched eight national championships and has made a name for himself at the SEA Games, Hanoi Open, and Premier League Pool in the U.S. Committed to nurturing the next generation of players, Tkon spon-
sors young athletes and provides training to over 500 aspiring billiard players annually, along with supporting numerous tournaments in Vietnam.
On the other hand, An Nhiêt, the youngest Vietnamese athlete to become a professional player, serves as an inspiration to many. With ownership of 14 billiard clubs, he plays a vital role in the sport's development in Vietnam and motivates the youth to pursue their dreams in billiards.
Recognizing the growth of billiards in Vietnam, Iwan Simonis and Aramith –leaders in billiard cloth and ball manufacturing – have chosen to align themselves with these iconic players. The companies have also signed a partnership agreement with RA Billiards Co., Ltd., which will act as a primary dis-
tributor of their products in Vietnam.
“I am very happy and proud to join the Iwan Simonis-Aramith team,” Nguyên says. “This gives me extra motivation to continue contributing to the development of our nation in this exciting sport.”
Jean-François Schmitz, commercial director of Iwan Simonis Group, emphasized the importance of these sponsorships.
“These contracts are the result of a longterm project to identify how we can best contribute to the increasing popularity of pool in Vietnam,” he says. “Our collaboration with Tkon, An Nhiât, and Hoang Nhat will enhance visibility for our products and support the development of this beautiful sport.”
