MAKING WAVES IN MOHAVE COUNTY BBB Welcomes Kryistyna Hook as Regional Director

B

etter Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Southwest welcomes Kryistyna Hook as the new Regional Director for BBB’s Mohave County Campus. She has jumped right in to supporting local businesses and consumers through educational presentations, strategic partnerships, events and collaborative initiatives.

Kryistyina is proud to call Lake Havasu City home and enjoys working closely with organizations that support early learning, growing youth and entrepreneurs. In just a few short months, she has already made tremendous impact in the region. By collaborating with media outlets including Go Lake Havasu, RiverScene Magazine and KNTR Radio, a strong media presence is budding. She is serving as a mentor for applicants in the inaugural Arizona State University HavaStart Up business competition, as well as providing ethics workshops for high school students. Her future plans include work with the chambers and SBDC at Mohave Community College to offer best in business support to companies in the area.

2019 Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship Recipients The annual BBB Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship recognizes and awards ten students in BBB’s service area with $10,000 in scholarships for their essays on “The Importance of Ethics & Integrity in our Community.” In partnership with Mission Fed, Swiss America, and Valley of the Sun Kiwanis Club, this year’s scholarship recipients were recognized at each of the Torch Awards for Ethics events held annually in California and Arizona. The program received 543 applications from students in grades 9-12 representing 157 high schools in our service area.

Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship Winner, First Place - $1,500 ERIN CHOI Campo Verde High School, Gilbert As society has become ruled by profit-driven behemoths and saturated with schemes for “instant” success, the consideration of ethics and integrity is increasingly viewed as a nuisance, an archaic honor code with no place in the desperate race towards capital success. Nevertheless, this facetious approach to one’s conscience is a mistake, and ultimately a disservice to our valued communities.

The significance of morality can be illustrated with a personal and seemingly inconsequential example; in first grade, my class was tasked with unearthing seashells from a sandbox to imitate an archeological excavation.

As I uncovered the little treasures, my eyes lit up like microcosms of the sun as I admired their lovely spirals and distinctive ridges. Impulse overpowered my internal unease at doing what I instinctively knew was wrong, and I furtively slipped a few into my pocket. Despite my initial sense of delight, the gnawing guilt that ensued became unbearable, I eventually returned my stolen collection with downcast eyes and shamefully burning cheeks. But by then, it was too late—my credibility and confidence had been lost.

While this carries the impression of a trivial episode, it reflects a far greater predicament. The ramifications of this behavior expand past a mere classroom, and become amplified when they enter into administrative, financial, and bureaucratic environments. As demonstrated prior, moral corruption leads to loss of faith in fellow members of the community, and such mistrust can potentially expand to the systemic institutions that sustain them. Envision these instances: If teachers cannot trust students to be truthful on assignments and assessments, educational growth stagnates. If a business cannot trust its customers, or vice versa, commerce suffers. If people cannot trust the government, it becomes obsolete.

As society is built on the infrastructure and relationships of its people, the deterioration of these individual components would, in due course, lead to the collapse of the greater whole. A community of self-serving immorality and constant distrust is a divided one that can no longer progress or even maintain its welfare, where people turn against one another rather than uniting under the banner of societal advancement. Thus, like a minute cell in the human body, we have the potential to repel corruption threatening to overtake our system, or develop into a cancerous presence that leads to destruction.

It’s your choice with your conscience that will make all the difference in your community.

Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship Winner, First Place - $1,500 CHIARA CURNOW Fallbrook High School, Fallbrook When I was eleven years old, my parents gave me a choice: fire up the lawn mower or don the rubber gloves. After multiple attempts at zigzag patterns on the grass, often resulting in damaged sprinkler heads, I moved on to the latter career path. Grabbing the rubber gloves, I started my own housecleaning business, which ultimately taught me the value of hard work, a good attitude, integrity, and how to make an honest living.

I remember the first time I cleaned a client’s house. After four sweaty hours of scrubbing, polishing, and vacuuming, I climbed into my mother’s car, exhausted from my efforts. She took one look at me and said, “You better not have had that frown on your face while working.” At first, I did not know what she meant, but after a couple years of smiling through the dirty work, I realized “effort” is not the only important aspect of a strong work ethic; attitude also matters greatly. I would have never been asked to return if the owner had seen me pouting around the house.

Having my own housecleaning business came with immense responsibility. I often found myself alone in people’s homes while I worked. One day, while cleaning an entertainment system, I knocked over a flat screen TV. Upon picking it up, I noticed to my horror, that there was a large crack through the screen. When I had finished my work for the day, I left a note explaining what had happened and the money that I had been paid for that day. I told them that I would work for free until I had paid off the cost of the TV. Considering the TV was wider than I am tall, I figured I would be working this mistake off for the rest of the year.

However, upon reading my note, the family I worked for respected my integrity so much that they waived the cost of the broken television. They told me that as customers of my service, they valued my display of integrity more than anything else and they felt they could trust me in their home even more so going forward. The value of ethics and integrity in both my business and in our communities gives people the priceless peace of mind that allows for businesses to thrive and customers to be satisfied.

Better Business Bureau Announces Inaugural Business Incubator: Empower by GoDaddy in partnership with ignite sparked by BBB “Today’s risks are different. The new rebels might be artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the ‘Oh how banal’.” - David Foster Wallace People are shocked to hear that the business disruptors are becoming what they supposedly disrupted in the beginning. Luke Amargo, BBB Entrepreneur Doordash created a kitchen. Uber owns cars. AirBnB owns Program Manager houses. While attempting to ingrain themselves in local communities, these companies are becoming what they fought against originally. They are becoming pseudo-Main Street businesses.

The wave of entrepreneurship is coming full circle, and Main Street businesses have to be ready and armed for the future to combat these new business strategies. To quote Bob Dylan, “For the loser now/ Will be later to win. For the times, they are a-changing.” Main Street businesses are the new rebels, so much so, companies are trying to capture that feeling of nostalgia.

Main Street businesses — the hair salons, downtown restaurants, truck services — are wrong about being inadequate; they are invited to ignite their future but they lack the partnerships to combat these woes. All they need is an empowerment push; an awareness of the changing times. According to Blue Corona on small businesses, only 54% utilize email marketing, 51% have a website and 48% use social media.

BBB's first Business Incubator is meant to challenge this neglected population of Main Street entrepreneurs. Empower by GoDaddy will be a 16-week empowerment movement dedicated to serving the best-of-the-best in Arizona. These companies, ranging from those in restaurants and those in the classic trades, will be challenged to soar from speakers by both BBB and GoDaddy. By looking at things like their marketing (SEO, Google Analytics, social media), team-management (HR, benefits, leadership-training) and finances (taxes, accounting, banking), BBB is excited to revamp and assist in futureproofing their passions.

FORM W-2/SSN DATA THEFT: INFORMATION FOR BUSINESSES & PAYROLL SERVICE PROVIDERS

A

s the Internal Revenue Service, the state tax agencies and the tax industry make progress combatting identity theft, cybercriminals need more data to impersonate real taxpayers and file fraudulent returns for refunds.

Currently, a particularly dangerous email scam is circulating. Here’s how it works: Cybercriminals use various spoofing techniques to disguise an email to make it appear as if it is from an organization executive. The email is sent to an employee in the payroll or human resources departments, requesting a list of all employees and their Forms W-2. This scam is sometimes referred to as business email compromise (BEC) or business email spoofing (BES).

Because time is critical, the IRS has created avenues for businesses and payroll service professionals to report if they lost data to this scam or if they only received the email without falling victim.

If notified quickly after the loss, the IRS may be able to take steps that help protect you and your employees from tax-related identity theft. Here is what to do:

(PII) data. Instead provide: • Business name • Business employer identification number (EIN) associated with the data loss • Contact name and phone number • Summary of how the data loss occurred • Volume of employees impacted Cybercriminals who successfully steal Forms W-2 immediately attempt to monetize their thefts. Criminals may immediately attempt to file fraudulent tax returns claiming a refund. Or, they may sell the data on the Internet’s blackmarket sites to others who file fraudulent tax returns or use the names and SSNs to create other crimes.

IRS Publication 4524, Security Awareness for Taxpayers, is an excellent one-page resource and can be shared with your employees.

The FTC also offers guidance to businesses on how to inform employees of the incident and additional steps businesses may take. See Data Breach Response: A Guide for Business.

In the subject line, type “W2 Data Loss” so that Cybercriminals, when they learn of a new IRS the email can be routed properly. Do not attach process, often create false IRS web sites and any employee personally identifiable information IRS impersonation emails.
