Soy un hombre que dibuja. Vivo en Lleida una ciudad de Catalunya que esta en una gran llanura. En verano hace mucho calor y en invierno esta invadida por la niebla. A 100 Km al Este está el Mar, y 100 km al Norte las grandes montañas del Pirineo. Me gusta dibujar cosas que la gente quiera conservar como si tuviera algo valioso. O que al mirarlas produzcan reacciones en la cabeza. Intriga, sorpresa... una sonrisa. He dibujado cosas muy diferentes, carteles, libros, diarios, revistas, dibujos animados, decorados de teatro.

Me gusta dibujar porque es mi manera de entender el mundo en que vivo y dar algo al mismo tiempo. Tambien me gusta enseñar las cosas que me gustan. Por eso con un amigo cree hace diez años el cine mas pequeño del mundo. PUCK CINEMA CARAVANA. Una pequeña caravana transformada en un cine que su interior que tiene como objetivo desplazarse a cualquier parte para propagar el arte del cine de animación.

I am a man who draws. I live in Lleida a city in Catalonia, located in the great plains by the river Segre. During the summer it is very hot and in winter it is invaded by fog. At 100 km to the east is the sea, and 100 km to the north the great mountains of the Pyrenees. I like to draw things that people want to keep as if they had something valuable. Or when looking at them, they produce reactions in you, intrigue, surprise ... evoke a smile. I have drawn very different things: posters, books, newspapers, magazines, cartoons, theater sets. I like to draw because it is my way of understanding the world in which I live and give something at the same time. I also like to teach the things that I like.

For that reason, ten years ago, I created with a friend, the smallest cinema in the world – PUCK Cinema Caravan. A small caravan transformed into a cinema whose interior we aim to move anywhere to propagate for the art of animated cinema.

How did it all began…how and why did you start making pictures/picturebooks?

Hace tiempo que queria dibujar una historia propia. Ser el escritor y el dibujante al mismo tiempo. Primero pense en hacer un libro. Pero todo lo que intentaba no acavaba de funcionar y tenia que volver a empezar una y otra vez. Estaba aprendiendo a escribir historias y poco a poco iba mejorando. Pasados tres años habia imaginado tantas cosas y tantos personajes que un amigo me dio la idea de que podia ser una serie de libros y que cada capitulo podia ser una estacion diferente. De repente todo empezaba a encajar y asi nacio la serie Tales from the Hidden Valley. Tales of the Hidden Valley ha sido un gran reto para mi. Muchas veces, las cosas no salen a la primera, y tampoco a la segunda o la tercera.

Some time ago I wanted to draw a story of my own. Be the writer and the drawer at the same time. First I thought about making a book. But everything I tried did not work and I had to start again and again. I was learning how to write stories and little by little I was improving. After three years I had imagined so many things and so many characters that a friend gave me the idea that it could be a series of books and that each chapter could be a different season. Suddenly everything began to fit and so was the series Tales of the Hidden Valley born. Tales of the Hidden Valley has been a great challenge for me. Often not all good things come in threes...

What does your (creative) working process look like? What techniques and tools are important for the process?

espectaculos... parte del encanto es tambien repensar como lo hare y cual sera el proceso. Asi el trabajo no se convierte en algo aburrido y rutinario. Es algo nuevo que te permite aprender y descubrir cosas. Pero en todo proceso para mi siempre es muy importante al principio investigar sobre lo que estoy haciendo. Tener referentes para poderme situar y despues ordenar las ideas caminando. Dando largos paseos preferiblemete en la naturaleza. Caminar me ayuda a ver las cosas mas claras. Primero pienso mucho. Intento descubrir que es lo que quiero explicar y hacia donde quiero ir.

As an artist I have done very different things, posters, animated films, visuals for shows ... part of the charm is also to reconsider how I will do it and what the process will be like. So work does not become boring and routine. It’s something new that allows you to learn and discover things. But for me it is always very important at the beginning of a process to

investigate what I am doing; to take references to be able to place and then arrange the ideas. Taking long walks, preferably in nature. Walking helps me see things more clearly. First I think a lot. I try to find out what I want to explain and where I want to go.

Where do you get inspiration from? What, whom are you influenced by?

Para Tales from the Hidden Valley mi mayor influencia es Tove Jansson. Me gusta mucho como es capaz de construir un universo especial donde se mezclan sencillos sentimientos humanos a través de personajes muy especiales en un espacio donde lo mágico y extraño también puede suceder. Tove es muy original al mismo tiempo que es muy sencilla. Su trabajo me parece extraordinario. Mucha gente esta relacionando mis cuentos con su obra. Para mi es un alago.

For Tales from the Hidden Valley my biggest influence is Tove Jansson. I really like how she is able to build a special universe where simple human feelings are mixed through very special characters in a space where the magic and the strange can also happen. Tove Jansson is very original and at the same time very simple. Her work seems extraordinary to me. Many people are relating my stories to her work. For me it is a praise.

Por la tarde soy el autor de unos libros que se venden en tres continentes.

Challenges? On an individual and Market level - Which are they?

Editar con NOBROW era casi un sueño que se ha hecho realidad y que todavía no he asimilado del todo. Ver los primeros libros editados y publicandose en lenguas tan diversas y diferentes me hace sentir afortunado. No he podido pensar con claridad mucho mas haya. Primero tengo que terminar mi ultimo libro de esta serie. Under the Water que transcurre en la estación de verano en el Valle. Precisamente mi gran reto actual es ser bueno en todo lo que hago. Mi vida se ha vuelto complicada y exigente. Después de muchos años vuelvo a ser profesor. Por las mañanas soy profesor de ilustración en una escuela municipal de arte y diseño.

Editing with NOBROW was almost a dream came true and that I have not yet fully assimilated. Seeing the first books published and published in such diverse and different languages makes me feel fortunate. I have not been able to think clearly in the time following. First I have to finish my last book in the series: Under the Water that takes place in the summer season in the Valley. My current great challenge is to be good at everything I do. My life has become complicated and demanding. After many years I am a professor again. In the mornings I works as a professor in illustration in a municipal school of art and design. In the afternoon I am the author of some books that are sold on three continents.

Which books from childhood do you remember (cherish)? Why this specific book/author/ illustrator, do you think?

Die Trommler für eine bessere Zeit de Reiner Zimnik, Los tambores en castellano. Creo que es un libro que me marco. Tenia un bago recuerdo, hasta pensaba que lo había imaginado o que era un sueño. Hace un par de años lo encontré revolviendo cosas en casa de mis padres. Es un libro que habla de las esperanza por encontrar un mundo mejor donde vivir. O simplemente de construir un mundo mejor. Es el cuento de una voluntad colectiva que crece i que crece pero que al final fracasa. Continua siendo muy actual. Hace pensar en los refugiados y también en nuestra sociedad globalizada ultracapitalista. Y también me hace pensar en mi país Cataluña y en todas sus dificultades para espresarse con libertad.

Die Trommler für eine bessere Zeit by Reiner Zimnik, Los tambores in Spanish. I think it’s a book that influenced me a lot. I had only a vague memory of it, I even thought I had imagined it or that it was a dream. A couple of years ago I found myself rummaging things at my parents’ house and I found the book. It is a book that talks about the hope of finding a better world to live in. Or simply to build a better world. It is the story of a collective dream that grows and grows but ultimately fails. It continues to be very current and relevant. It makes us think of the refugees and also of our ultra-capitalist globalized society. And it also makes me think of my country Catalonia and the difficulties to express oneself freely there.

Do you have a favourite illustrator/artist/ picturebookmaker?

It is difficult to choose only one, but I could say Sempé (Jean-Jacques Sempé) for example. I really like how he brings humor to poetry. He is a poet and a humorist at the same time. His work is intelligent and tender. There is a positive force and it is capable of transmitting joy and the desire to live. How difficult it is and how necessary it is. And all that with merely a very fine and very free line.

The best and the worst when it comes to being an artist/illustrator?

Es difícil escoger uno solo, pero podría decir Sempé por ejemplo. Me gusta mucho como es capaz de acercar el humor a la poesía. Es un poeta y un humorista al mismo tiempo. Su obra es inteligente y tierna. Hay una fuerza positiva y es capaz de transmitir alegría y ganas de vivir. Que difícil es y como es de necesario. Y nada mas que con una linea muy fina y muy libre.

Lo mejor y lo peor siempre tiene que ver con la libertad creativa. A mi me gusta disfrutar de libertad pero también acepto las limitaciones. Me gusta intentar hacer lo mejor con lo disponible. Aceptar las limitaciones técnicas o de otro tipo puede ser muy creativo. Si tienes toda la libertad del mundo también puede ser un problema.

The best and the worst always has to do with creative freedom. I like to enjoy freedom but I also accept limitations. I like to try to make the best of what is available. Accepting technical or other limitations can be very creative. If you have all the freedom in the world it can also be a problem.

Dream assignement – what would it look like?

Respect a mi trabajo Tales from the Hidden Valley nacio con la idea de llegar a ser una película de animación. No se si la realizare yo o no, pero me gustaría mucho que llegara a ser una serie. de pocos y muy cuidados capítulos.

When thinking about that my work Tales from the Hidden Valley was born with the idea of becoming an animated film. I do not know if I will do it myself or not, but I would very much like it to become a film series (of some very carefully selected parts of the books).

What are you currently working on? Will there be more books from The Hidden Valley?

Demasiadas cosas,... Cada año me encargo de la imagen del festival de Animacion de mi ciudad. Es un festival que tiene mas de 20 años se llama ANIMAC. Estoy acabando de editar el opening animadopara anunciar el festival. Tengo que preparar las clases de Ilustración para la escuela de arte y también tengo que empezar a trabajar en un proyecto nuevo de espectaculo teatral para niños de 0 a 5 años. Ya he trabajado en varios: Sensacional, Little Night, La Guerra de Troia... Under the Water tendria que estar acabado en enero. Es el cuarto y ultimo de esta primera serie. Después me gustaría escribir con calma una nueva historia seguramente mas larga que también ocurre en The Hidden VAlley. Habra nuevos personajes y descubriremos otros rincones del valle. Y también sabremos mucho mas sobre algunos de los personajes que ya conocemos.

Too many things, ... Every year I take care of the image, and make the poster, for the Animation festival of my city. Animac, the International Animation Film Festival of Catalonia, is

a festival going back more than 20 years. I am just editing the animated opening that will announce the festival. I also have to prepare the Illustration classes for the art school and start working on a new theatrical project for children from 0 to 5 years old. I have already worked in several such projects: Sensacional, Little Night, La Guerra de Troia... Under the Water shall be finished in January. It is the fourth and final of this first series of the Valley. Then I would like to calmly write a new and probably longer story that also takes place in The Hidden Valley. There will be new characters and we will discover other corners of the valley. And we will also get to know much more about some of the characters we already know and have met.
