Bay Forest Community Association News -Dan Pias, Community Association President (Excerpted from Emails to Community)

Pool/4th of July Parade Because we had a better than 70% chance of thunderstorms starting at 7:00 am and lasting all day, we believed, for the safety of all involved, that we regrettably had to cancel the bike parade and the pool park party. Regulations require that when there is lighting in the area or thunder is heard, we must vacate the pool area for safety reasons. It simply would not make good sense to hold our 4th festivities with that potential risk. We will try to plan another party function at a later date this year. We do hope everyone had a safe and happy 4th of July.

Brooks Blue Marlins Swim Team

Thanks to all the participants, coaches and volunteers for another successful swim team year at our Bay Forest Pool. We know that those Saturday morning swim meets can be a little disruptive, but we gladly offer our pool and facilities for the kids. Thanks to all for your patience and cooperation.

Pool Parties

The Bay Forest Pool is open for homeowner pool parties at no cost to the homeowner. To make party reservations, just go on line to the www.bayforest.info website and use the pool party scheduler. Parties may be scheduled during normal pool hours. No more than one party may be scheduled in the afternoon (noon – 4:30 pm), no more than one party may be scheduled in the evening (after 5:00 pm). Parties should be scheduled seven (7) days in advance, and evening parties may be extended to 10:00 pm. If you have any questions or would like to discuss having a party at our community pool, please contact our community manager at 832-224-6446 or email at manager@bayforest.info.

The Perimeter Fence:

The process continues. We are making progress, although it is a little slower than we would like it to be. The new brick wall is progressing. Our contractors have had to work through a few issues along the way but are doing so diligently and are expected to have their best crew back on the job this month. We have said all along, that this is not a race to get it done quickly, but a process to get it done right. Thanks to all for your patience during the construction.

Neighborhood News Trash Services:

Except for 1 or 2 exceptions, it appears that we are back on the right track with our Ameriwaste vendor. Please remember that we pay extra for 'back door' service, and that means that all household trash and recycle bins are to be placed and or presented at your back door area. The bins and trash must be visible for the trash 'runners' to see from the street. They will pick up and return the containers to the same point of pick up. The yard waste and other debris are to be placed at the curb in proper condition for pick up. For those who are putting yard waste in containers rather than bundling or bagging, the carrier will return the containers to the place of pick up. (That means if they got it at the curb, they will return it to the curb.)

Bay Forest's Little Free Library

We officially opened the Little Free Library this month. Samantha Kelling, 10, was inspired by a story in the STAAR test and asked to build a little free library for our neighborhood. She and her dad designed and built it this summer. People can take, leave, or trade books. It functions to both inspire literacy and help reuse resources. There are tons of designs on the internet, but Nick and Sam worked to design one that matches Bay Forest, so ours looks like brick and uses the Bay Forest colors. There are several in our area and once we get our plaque, you will be able to search for ours on the maps on the website. https://littlefreelibrary.org/

Neighborhood News Bay Forest Gourmet Group

Hello Fellow Foodies! If you enjoy good food, good wine, and making new friends (and who doesn’t?) then you might want to consider joining the Bay Forest Gourmet Group. We are a very laid-back group of neighbors who enjoy getting together and trying new recipes, and we’d love to have you join us. If you would like more information about our group, please send an email to Anita Burns at anibur315@gmail.com. I’d be happy to tell you all about it. The Bay Forest Group is on summer vacation right now. We typically take the summer off and will soon begin planning our first event of the season which will happen either late September or early October. Since I don’t have any current recipes to share this month, I thought you might enjoy this recipe for Classic Baked Beans that I will be making for a summer party later this week. It serves a crowd of 10-12 and can easily be doubled.

Classic Baked Beans • • • • • • • •

5 cans of pork and beans (15 ounce cans – VanCamp’s or similar) 2 medium or 1 large yellow onion, chopped 1 to 2 tablespoons butter 3/4 cup ketchup 1/2 cup molasses 3 tablespoons prepared mustard 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown sugar (use less for less sweetness) 6 to 8 slices uncooked bacon, each cut in half or thirds

Preheat oven to 325⸰ degrees. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Sauté onions over medium heat in butter until onions are tender and translucent. Mix beans, sauteed onions, ketchup, mustard, molasses and brown sugar until blended well. Pour into prepared baking dish. Arrange uncooked bacon in single layer on top. Bake uncovered for 2-3 hours. Beans are ready when the top is dark and caramelized. Serve warm. Enjoy! Slow-Cooker Option These beans can also be thrown together and cooked in the slow cooker on low for 6 to 8 hours. They won’t have the caramelized top, but they will still be wonderful. from www.sweetlittlebluebird.com

Bay Forest Yard of the Month Summertime is finally here! While this season is great for watermelon and pool parties, the high temperatures have been rough on tender flowers and green grass. Be sure to be generous with water when the temps are up near 100 degrees and your grass will stay green and healthy.

Our two winning families have taken that advice to heart and have beautiful, lush lawns to show for it, even after many days of extreme heat. Congratulations to Robert and Brenda Bondy at 15797 Greencourt and the Braid family at 15218 Poplar

Community News Brooks Blue Marlins Swim Team

The Brooks Blue Marlins had a wonderful 2018 season – we won 2nd place in our Division of Clear Creek Swim League which was a drastic improvement over 2017. Our swimmers worked hard at practice and the coaches worked equally hard on proper training. Next year we hope to continue the improvement with a 1st place banner. The Blue Marlins would like to thank all our 2018 sponsors and look forward to continuing the tradition of community involvement with the team. We’d especially like to thank the Bay Forest Community Association for their support. This year we paired with Bay Forest to install new stainless steel backstroke flag stanchions at the pool. We plan to replace the flags before the start of next season. The improvement makes our venue one of the best in the league. We are a non-profit club, run by its elected Board of Directors which meets each month. All members are welcome at each meeting and encouraged to be involved in team activities and fundraisers. Please check the website for news for next season’s schedule, and more info: www.brooksbluemarlins.com Feel free to email us at: brooksbluemarlins@gmail.com

Community News It’s the dog days of summer!

Residential & Commercial

Tips to keep your pets safe

Sergeant Paulino Lozano, Houston Police Neighbors, Many of you are likely enjoying these long summer days outside with your pets. Although this can be a fun time of the year for your furry friends, it’s also important to remember that higher temperatures mean higher risks for pets. To keep your pets safe, follow these precautions from experts at the ASPCA: 1. Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. 2. Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor or even collapse. 3. Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. 4. Do not leave pets unsupervised around a pool—not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. 5. Open unscreened windows pose a real danger to pets, who often fall out of them. Keep all unscreened windows or doors in your home closed, and make sure adjustable screens are tightly secured. 6. Feel free to trim longer hair on your dog, but never shave your dog. The layers of dogs’ coats protect them from overheating and sunburn. Brushing cats more often than usual can prevent problems caused by excessive heat. 7. When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog linger on hot asphalt. Being so close to the ground, your pet’s body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Keep walks during these times to a minimum. 8. Remember that food and drink commonly found at barbeques can be poisonous to pets. Hope your pets are having a furry good summer!

Seven Cool Tips for a Hot Summer Sergeant Paulino Lozano, Houston Police

Neighbors, As summer temperatures rise, so does the rate of heat-related incidents. The Houston Police reminds you to take these seven precautions to ensure you and your neighbors are able to enjoy the summer weather safely: 1. NEVER leave children or pets alone in hot vehicles! Heat can quickly rise in a car- up to 20 degrees in just 10 minutes! If you see a child or pet in a hot car, call 911 immediately. 2. Check on family members and neighbors, especially those who are older, to be sure they are keeping cool. 3. If you have to be outside, drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in the shade. 4. Know the signs of heat-related illnesses. 5. Do not use electric fans when the temperature outside is more than 95 degrees, as this could increase the risk of heat-related illness. Fans create air flow and a false sense of comfort but do not reduce body temperature. 6. Avoid high-energy activities. 7. Check on your pets-bring them inside and provide them with plenty of cool water. Stay cool!

GardenLine Tips

by Randy Lemmon 740 KTRH

It’s hot, but fall veggie gardening is right around the corner

Can you believe we are just weeks away from August? And although we are all sweltering in the Texas summer heat, it’s actually time to start thinking about your fall vegetable garden. I know... just mowing the lawn or pulling a weed right now can be as pleasant as a visit to the dentist. But, if you want a fall vegetable garden, you should be getting busy today, despite the heat. August is the ideal time to plant many types of vegetables for fall gardens. Unfortunately, many novice gardeners, and many veterans new to Houston, miss this opportunity. If you wait until temperatures have moderated to plant veggies, many will not have had time to reach maturity before cold or freezing weather arrives. In addition, if you don’t already have a raised bed set up for fall a veggie garden, you should build it today – it’ll need a few weeks of “mellowing,” so things you plant don’t burn up when the summer heat combines with over-active soil. So, let’s start with what we can plant as early as August. Whenever possible, choose early maturing vegetables for the fall garden. They can be planted after early summer vegetables have been harvested, and they’ll be ready to pick before freezing weather. Transplants are best since we are already at the autumn doorstep. The following can be seeded or transplanted August through September: Bush and pole beans (8/1 - 9/15) Lima beans (8/1 - 9/15) Broccoli transplants (8/1 - 9/15) Brussels sprouts (8/1 - 10/1) Cabbage transplants (8/1 - 9/15) Chinese cabbage (8/15 - 9/15) Carrots (8/15 - 10/15) Cauliflower transplants (8/15 - 9/15) Swiss chard (8/1 - 10/15) Sweet corn (8/1 - 8/15) Cucumber (8/1 - 9/15) Kohlrabi (8/15 - 9/15) Parsley (8/15 - 10/1) Irish potatoes (8/15 - 9/15) Summer squash (8/1 - 8/15) Remove old plants that have stopped producing to eliminate shelters for insects and disease organisms. Peppers and tomatoes planted earlier this year will not set fruit during the heat of summer, even though they may still be flowering. If the plants remain healthy, they will set fruit again once daily temperatures stay below 90 degrees. Side-dress established, healthy plants with fertilizer to encourage new growth, and keep them watered. Tomatoes covered with spider mites are not worth saving. And when it comes to the bed, be sure to review a tip sheet I wrote in May 2017 - especially if you’re new to fall vegetable gardening on the Gulf Coast. It’s actually an article about spring gardens, but it nicely details how to build the perfect raised bed.

Randy's Lawn Fertilization Schedule For southern grasses including: St. Augustine, Bermuda and Zoysia

FERTILIZE June-September - if turfgrass looks yellow (chlorosis) or necrotic, use an application of either granular or liquid iron. Once a year should be enough. October-November - apply winterizer formulas for winter hardiness. Ratios vary, but make sure they are "winter" or "fall" formulas designed for southern grasses. (examples: 18-6-12, 8-12-16, 10-5-14) Will make lawns winterhardy.

FUNGICIDE - two times a year: July-September - Gray Leaf Spot is a blotchy spot on the grass blade leafs. (mostly on St. Augustine lawns) Use fungicides with active ingredients like Daconil, Consan or Banner. September-October - To control the dreaded Brownpatch fungal disease (symmetrical brown circles in the grass) you must prevent it from coming up with a systemic lawn fungicide with Bayleton, Terrachlor, Banner or Benomyl.

INSECTICIDES - It is our belief on GardenLine, as a way to

be kind to the environment, that you do not put down insecticides unless you know you have a problem. However, be prepared during the hot summer months — July through September — to attack chinch bug damage. This will show up as irregular shaped spots in the lawn along the concrete. Any liquid insecticide, like Permethrin or Cypermethrin, will treat the spot well. Then apply a granular insecticide like Deltamethrin or granular Permethrin in a broadcast applicator throughout the rest of the yard.

GardenLine with Randy Lemmon Every Saturday and Sunday morning, GardenLine’s Randy Lemmon answers listeners' questions on everything from aphids to zoysias. He's Houston’s absolute expert on lawns and gardens, offering help to listeners both with and without “green thumbs.” Randy's a Texas Aggie who truly KNOWS plants and flowers. He explains them with ease and candor, and is as competent a "plant person" as there is. He studies, and he practices. He embraces "new methods" as well as the "old" ways of dealing with problems. Community News The Bay Area Chorus of Greater Houston Auditions for Singers for Their Coming 54th Concert Season on August 19 – Sign Up Now! The Bay Area Chorus’ 53th choral concert season will include five performances at Houston area churches and schools. The concert season programs will include a variety of musical styles, including American favorites, Christmas carols, and Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living” with orchestra under the direction and baton of Milton Pullen, BAC Artistic Director. The Mission Statement of the BAC is “Enriching Lives Through Choral Music” Singers of all voice types are encouraged to sign up for auditions being held on Sunday, August 19, 3-5:00 pm at Webster Presbyterian Church, 201 West NASA Pkwy, Webster TX 77598. Call the BAC HOT LINE: 281-326-1286 for sign up, audition information, or questions about the process. Detailed information can be found on the website (www.bayareachorus.org) (Facebook/Bay Area Chorus) There are membership dues and concert dress requirements as well as commitment to weekly Monday rehearsals when accepted. Current full time choral music teachers, church choir directors and voice teachers qualify for membership fee scholarships upon audition. “Singing in a choir is an absolutely unique experience. It is one of the most important things in the world. Where else do you have everyone doing the same thing at the same time without the use of special equipment and for a greater purpose, and no one is sitting on the bench?” YouTube In addition, the chorus sincerely believes that vocal music combines words and notes to form a higher dimension of expression than ordinary recitation may yield. Music is a universal language lifted from the pages of the composer’s score, prepared and internalized by the choir in the rehearsal hall and then performed. In doing so, we seek to demonstrate that singing is a soul satisfying experience from choir to audience. No other form of expression, but music, lifts and unites the whole of humankind. Emergency Communications

The Office of Communications is committed to providing families, the community, and the media prompt and accurate information in the event of a school emergency. While we certainly do not anticipate incidents that would lead to emergency communications, we certainly must be prepared to communicate with all stakeholders. Here are the ways we communicate with the public in an emergency:

Email, Phone and Text

CCISD has a service called SchoolMessenger. This system updates every night to ensure any changes to student contact information is current. SchoolMessenger allows us to email, phone and text parents/guardians in the event of an emergency. We will not use text messaging for general outreach messages. Q. How do I receive text messages? A. At the time of enrollment, parents and guardians should receive an introductory text message prompting you to optin to receiving messages. It may take up to 42 hours upon enrollment to receive the text message. If you do not receive the initial text message, you can subscribe to text messages at any time by sending a text which says “Y” or “Yes” or “Optin” or “Subscribe” to 68453. The cell phone number must have be on record with your student information. arents will be able to select the way they want us to communicate P with them via text, email and phone. Parents can log into their Skyward Family Access Account and click on the "Skylert" tab along the left side. You will be able to select your preferred method of contact for school notifications, as well as update preferences and contact information at any time and as often as needed. Questions and Answers

We recognize the need to communicate and answer questions in the event of an emergency. If the emergency involves a particular campus, often times their phone lines are overrun with calls while campus staff is handling the crisis at hand. We recommend parents contact the District’s main office at 281-284-0000 as we will have staff available to share information. Click Here to view important Powerpoint Presentation!

New Fencing Around FPE

As an added safety precaution, and in response to several incidents last school year, new fencing has been added around Falcon Pass Elementary that will impact access to the Bay Forest neighborhood via the bridge. Beginning the first day of school, the gated fence will be locked during school hours. Families and students can still use the bridge to walk/ride to school in the mornings and afternoons as well as during evenings and on weekends. The purpose of the gate is to limit pedestrian activity behind the school during the school day. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however the safety of our students and staff must come first and the addition of fencing and gates will help us ensure safe surroundings during the school day. Respectfully, Monica Giuffre, principal

A Note from Our New Nurse

I am so excited to join the Falcon Pass family this school year as the School Nurse! It is a huge blessing to be a part of the School District I grew up in. Way back in the day (LOL), I went to McWhirter Elementary, Clear Lake Intermediate, and graduated from Clear Lake HS. I went on to UT Health Science Center School of Nursing in the Medical Center for my Bachelor’s. My husband, Jason, is a local as well and works just down the street from FPE. My son, Christian, graduated from Clear Horizons Early College High School, recently graduated from U of H Clear Lake, and will be an Art Teacher at Ball HS this fall. My oldest daughter, Chloe, is a Sophomore at CLHS and is also on the Flair Drill Team. My youngest daughter, Peyton, is a 4th grader and loves to swim on the Clear Lake Stars swim team. She will be at Falcon Pass too. I look forward to meeting you all! đ&#x;˜Š Go Voyagers! Christie Curtis
