For example, throwing a ball may be a bad idea when there is a whole bunch of little kids in the pool. It may be just fine with there are fewer patrons in the pool. So we do not have a 'no ball' rule. Here are the basic - must follow rules. 1. No Running 2. No Glass in the pool area. 3. No Pushing or dunking 4. One person on the diving board at a time. 5. No horseplay (Rough or loud play). 6. The lifeguards rules and orders are to be followed at all times. 7. Neighborhood News Owls in the Bay Forest Park

Story and Photos by Bay Forest Neighbor, Sarah Ruiz There is an owl nest in Bay Forest Park! It's at the top of the tallest pine tree on the edge of the open field next to Lofty Peak Lane. These pictures are the babies! I did a bit of online research and I think they are great horned owls, which are common throughout the United States. They can leave the nest to climb along branches at 5 weeks old, and start to fly at 9-10 weeks old, so these two are probably 7-8 weeks old as of today (mid April). They are old enough now that the parents can leave them during the day, but return at night to feed them. Once they are able to fly, they still usually stay in the area with their parents through the summer, so they may be our neighbors for a while!

Neighborhood News Bay Forest Gourmet Group

Our last dinner party of the 2018-2019 season was on Saturday, May 4, with a “Dining at Diamond Head” theme. Twenty-six members and two guests joined in the fun. Our main course was pulled pork with peach sauce accompanied by dishes of luau rice, mixed veggies and Kona coleslaw. Appetizers included shrimp scampi, spinach artichoke hearts, potato skins and chicken kabobs. We take the summer off so folks can travel to cooler climates and will resume our parties next fall. Here is the recipe for the potato skin bites.

Potato Skin Bites Ingredients • 3 russet potatoes, scrubbed clean • 1 tsp garlic powder • 2 Tbsp. olive oil • 6 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled • Kosher salt • 1½ cup shredded cheddar cheese • Freshly ground black pepper • 3 green onions, thinly sliced • Pinch cayenne pepper • Sour cream for serving Directions 1. Preheat oven to 400˚. Slice potatoes into ½ inch coins.

2. In a large bowl, toss the potato rounds in olive oil. Season with salt, pepper, cayenne and garlic powder and toss until evenly coated. Place in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until lightly browned and tender, flipping halfway through. 3. Top each potato round with cheese and bacon. Broil until melty – about 2 minutes. 4. Dollop sour cream onto each potato slice and garnish with green onion. Source:

Bay Forest Annual Easter Egg Hunt & Crawfish Boil First we want to thank all of the residents who helped: Bruce/Sally Harrington, Tom and Carrie Sullivan, Joy and Steve King, Steve and Jennifer Ellis, Doug Williford and, last but not least, Brady Fitting, who helped pick up all the items, etc.

Residents said, “The weather was great. We met new neighbors who were excited to be part of our neighborhood fun and activities. We had great tasting crawfish. Over 130 pounds were gone in about 35-40 minutes! Next year we plan to have more corn on the cob and kid friendly food!

More and more residents are coming out and visiting with their neighbors and friends. There were about two or three times as many people this year over last year!

There were so many children attending the Easter Egg Hunt and Crawfish Boil! Next year we plan to have more corn on the cob and kid friendly food!

Bay Forest Yard of the Month This is one of the hardest times of the year to select our Yards of the Month because so much is blooming right now. However, it has been our pleasure to scour the neighborhood for the best of the best, and we have found two absolutely beautiful yards for you this month. We hope you find the time to drive down these cul de sacs to see these yards, but until then, we have the pictures for you to enjoy.

(YARD OF THE MONTH continued on page 11)

1911 Hillside Oak Greg and Jennifer Aber have created a somewhat formal symmetrical garden in their yard at 1911 Hillside Oak. By planting flowers and grass in large swaths of color, the overall feel of this shady yard is peaceful, and calm.

What is a Watershed and Why Should You Care?

You live in a watershed! It doesn’t matter where you live – in the city, in the country, on a mountaintop, or in a swamp – you live in a watershed; because water drains from wherever you are to a river, a bayou, a lake, or a bay. And what you do where you live has a direct impact on the rivers or the bays that you drain to. That’s why you should care and why you should know what a watershed is!

Learn More! A watershed is simply the area of land that drains to a common outlet (usually a stream or river). The watershed is usually named for the river that drains it. For example, the Colorado River watershed is drained by the Colorado River. Watersheds can be large (like the Colorado) or small (like Horsepen Bayou), and smaller watersheds exist within larger watersheds. You likely live in more than one watershed. This graphic shows a series of watersheds in suburban Houston. It shows how each watershed is like a bowl with an outlet.

Stormwater runoff is the most common way that water gets from where you are down to the stream or bayou that drains your watershed. If you live out in the country, you can easily follow the path water follows—perhaps through a few ditches until it reaches the first creek.

Tips for Summer Pet Travel by Amy Burkert

Summer is in the air! It’s that wonderful time of year when we pack up the car and head out on vacation to visit new places. This year, more than ever before, families are planning to take their pets along for the ride – and while it takes a little more preparation to include the furry members of your family in the plans, there is no questions that it’s worth the effort! Here are a few tips to get your trip off on the right paw! Under-Estimate What You Can Accomplish When you travel with a pet, everything takes a little longer than when you’re traveling alone. And that’s a good thing! It reminds you to slow down and “sniff the roses.” But, when figuring the distance you can travel or the activities you can accomplish in a day, be conservative in your estimates. A good rule is to make the plan... and then divide by two. If you achieve more than that, it’s a bonus. Buckle ’em up! Our pets are family, so it’s essential to keep them safe by buckling them up. Whether you prefer a seat belt harness or a secured pet carrier, protect yourself and your pet from serious injuries every time you get in the car. Sniff Out Fun GoPetFriendly.com has listings for all kinds of pet friendly activities... from dog parks and beaches, to restaurants and wineries... and even some golf courses and baseball games! You can also check with the visitors bureau or fetch the locals’ perspective by reaching out on social media. With a little digging, there’ll be no shortage of entertaining options that you all can enjoy together. Scoop the Poop We’ve all experienced it, and nothing spoils a day faster than stepping in something unpleasant. Abandoning your pet’s waste reflects poorly on all pet owners and is the primary reason that parks and other locations choose not to allow dogs. Always carry plastic bags with you and find an appropriate receptacle to dispose of it. Obey Leash Laws Just as we deserve to include our pets in our lives, there are people (and other pets) who prefer not to have our loved ones foisted upon them. Whether your dog has the perfect recall is irrelevant, if the sign says leash him – do it. It shows that you’re a responsible and considerate pet owner. read more!

Mulch Volcanoes Revisited

Recently on GardenLine, we discussed using compost instead of mulch around the base of trees, and I was once again moved to warn about piling it up too high to make a "mulch volcano" – a mound or cone of mulch, a foot or more deep, piled up around trees and shrubs.

Too much compost or mulch can be as detrimental as not enough. The pictures here show what NOT to do. I’m not sure how this practice developed, but deep mulch can cause considerable damage. I suspect uneducated, untrained and unprofessional landscape companies are the originators. And it seems to be especially pronounced at model homes in new residential communities. I further suspect that naive or first-time homeowners spot the practice and decide to copy it. Professional landscapers get paid to fill their customers' requests, and when homeowners order (as they should) fresh mulch twice a year, several inches sometimes get piled up in spots that might need just one inch. As a result, it accumulates to cover the base of tree trunks and the very important root flare. That bottom section needs air and light. With excess mulch, it's forced into darkness and subjected to moisture. Bark that's too moist for too long will rot! And rotted bark cannot protect the tree from diseases. In fact, diseases grow better in the dark moisture of the mulch, and then the trees become susceptible to insects. Some trees, such as maples, have shallow roots. If mulch is piled high around their trunks, the roots will start to grow into the mulch and encircle the trunk.

This is called a “girdling root,” and as it grows in diameter, it pushes against the trunk, which is also trying to grow bigger. Eventually, the trunk will grow wider above and below the girdling root, and may actually encase it. It also prevents tree and shrub roots from expanding out in a healthy fashion. Healthy root growth has many agronomic advantages, and it aids in a tree's stability. So, here are some basics: Shredded Texas native mulches are best when at a depth of 3-4 inches if you are starting from scratch. Even though mulch will

break down over two or three years, bi-annual applications often accumulate to unhealthy levels. So start using compost instead of mulch. Or remove a thick layer and begin again. With compost, you get the same weed prevention and moisture preservation, but with a faster breakdown. And by adding just an inch or so per season, you avoid achieving “volcano” status. If your current mulch is more hardwood shards than natural shredded, consider removing a couple of inches and change to native mulch or compost with your next application.

Just Say NO to Dyed Mulch!!! I got in a debate/spirited discussion/lecture the other day with a landscaper about the use of dyed mulches. He started off really wanting to convince me that he is just doing what the customer asks for when he puts out dyed mulch. That’s when I gave him a list of things he should tell customers/potential customers as to why they shouldn’t use or even want dyed mulch. By the time he looked at the list, you could see this revealing look wash across his face. And at that point I knew I had converted him back to using Texas Native and Naturally Shredded types of mulch. If it worked for him, I knew I had to share it with the masses. Here’s the list I gave him that he put on paper to share in his business: 1. It Doesn’t Look Natural 2. Most Dyed Mulches are Made of Recycled Wood Waste 3. There’s a Negative Effect to the Soil 4. Nitrogen Fixation Almost Always Happens 5. Shredded Native Mulches with Composted Elements Break Down in the Soil Click Here to read complete article.

CCISD Celebrates 10th Annual Senior to Senior Prom

Students from the Clear Creek ISD graduating class of 2019 hosted more than 200 “over 60” special guests to celebrate the 10th Annual Senior to Senior Prom in style. The evening, themed “Fly Me to the Moon,” also provided the perfect setting to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar landing, as many of the guests could recollect this historic time period for the nation. Each year, soon-to-be graduates representing all seven CCISD high schools host this unique prom to thank this special segment of the community for their support of their education journey and let them know how valued they are. “It was heartwarming to see such wonderful young people greeting us, serving our food, checking for refills, smiling,” said prom guest, Peggy Garcia. “I could tell their attitudes were genuine.” CCISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Smith kicked off the evening thanking the high school seniors and welcomed the guests. “The Apollo anniversary calls to mind how having the Johnson Space Center in our backyard has brought incredible opportunities and growth to our District,” he said. “But it’s not just about astronauts. It takes engineers, accountants and IT professionals to explore (SCHOOL NEWS continued on page 18)

The Clear Falls High School Jazz Band, under the direction of Russell Zavalla, entertained the crowd during dinner while Clear Lake High School senior Zach Neal was DJ during the dancing portion of the evening. Thanks to the NASA Johnson Space Center (JSC) Public Information Office and Exhibits team, guests had the opportunity to enjoy tributes to the iconic moon landing on display throughout the Clear View High School gymnasium. JSC also provided posters and decals commemorating both the 60th anniversary of NASA and the Apollo 11 milestone for every guest. The menu for the evening, planned and prepared by CCISD Executive Chef Robert Maccarone, was an homage to the original celebration menu served to the Apollo 11 Astronauts when they met with President Nixon upon their return. The printed program also featured “Memories of the Moon Landing” that had been gathered in advance from Senior to Senior Prom invitees. “I was at the University of Santo Tomas High School at that time, back in the Philippines, and the entire student body excitedly watched the Apollo 11 moon landing on the big screen,” wrote Ana Maria Nolasco. “Little did I know that my husband and I would fortunately working for, and retiring from, the U.S. Space Program many years later.” Antwi and Parrott crowned guests, Susiee Groves and Paul Casinger, the 2019 Prom Queen and King, respectively. CCISD Issued LapTops

www.clearlakehs.ccisd.net

This past week found a number of Falcons competing on the state, national and international stage and leading the way. Our BPA Team sent thirteen individuals to the National competition and ten were honored with a final Top 10 stage appearance. Dean Zhou placed 3rd in C++ Programming and Steve Wu placed first in Medical Office Procedures. Best in the Nation! Alina Haryani became a finalist in the largest International DECA contest to date. And we have a group of Falcons head off to the state Science Olympiad contest in College Station – results unknown at publication time. The District Champion Boys Water Polo team competed at the State Tournament and placed ninth in the State of Texas. Congratulations to all our Falcons! These accomplishments are noteworthy, and as the principal of Clear Lake High School, I am very proud of these students. What I am even more proud of are the notes from the hotel managers, the airline employees, the passengers these kids interact with. The compliments on their behavior are noteworthy as well. Our kids are displaying their core values and leaving a very positive impression of what a Clear Lake High School student is. Life is better at the Lake!

Safety

As we continue the journey to the end of the school year, we want to revisit responsible digital citizenship. Our kids have grown up with the cell phone and the Internet, and unfortunately, think that what is stored on their devices or sent in private social media apps out there on the Internet is secret. We all know better, but…. We want to remind our parents to have frank discussions with your child about responsible use of electronic devices. More and more, postings are being used to evaluate applicants for college entrance and for employment. What our kids do today will follow them forever, our digital footprint never goes away. We want all Falcons to be responsible and to be safe.

Good afternoon! Any 1:1 device insurance purchases will roll over to the 2019-2020 school year; meaning students that purchase insurance starting today are covered for accidental damage, loss, or theft from the date of purchase until August 2020. We believe this is a great opportunity for parents, guardians, and students to ensure that they have peace of mind that comes with having coverage as well as shifting one part of back to school expenses away from the start-of-school crunch time. As always, device insurance costs $20 for most students and is reduced to $10 for students that are part of the free-and-reduced-lunch program. Attached you will find an updated insurance flyer for the 20192020 school year as well as instructions on how parents can add the optional insurance fee in skyward to get coverage. Help Your High Schooler Deal With End-of-School-Year Stress Your teen has an English test tomorrow. Her history paper is due next week. The math teacher just assigned a huge group project. And your teen has a summer job interview this weekend. No wonder she’s stressed! The end of a school year is a time when many students feel overwhelmed. And, since stressed teens are rarely at their best, they sometimes perform below their capabilities. The good news is that there are ways you can help your teen deal with stress. You can: • Be a good listener. Sometimes, just giving your teen a chance to let off steam can be helpful. Don’t try to “fix” her problems. Just let her talk and really listen to her.

• Ask questions to help her figure out ways to work through the problem. Has she created a study schedule? Is it possible to reschedule her interview? She’s more likely to stick with a solution if she’s the one who developed it.

• Suggest stress relievers. Taking a few deep breaths before an exam or a job interview can make her feel more in control. A brief walk outside can help her regain her focus. Eating a healthy snack will give her energy to keep going. But she should avoid high-caffeine energy drinks. They will only make her feel more agitated.

To go along with Earth Day, we celebrate conservation in April. To help our students learn about conservation and why it is so important, we celebrated Earth Day by lining the school hallway with special interactive Earth Day exhibits so our students could freely touch and explore what makes our planet so special as well as how to conserve it to keep Earth looking beautiful for years to come! The activities included exploring soil, touching live earthworms, sorting animals into their correct habitats, and practicing recycling!
