LETTER FROM THE LEAD

For the last two months a specific word has been on my mind a lot: brokenness.

Here is how the dictionary defines brokenness: 1.

Forcibly separated into two or more pieces; fractured

2.

Sundered by divorce, separation or desertion of a parent or parents

3.

Having been violated

4.

Incomplete, being in a state of disarray; disordered

5.

Weakened and infirmed

6.

Crushed by grief

7.

Financially ruined; bankrupt

8.

Not functioning; out of order

We all agree that the world we live in is filled with brokenness.

As I write this, my mother-in-law is weakened in the last days of her battle with cancer. A married couple separates, leaving their children confused. An unwise investment leads to financial ruin. The sudden loss of a teenage son leaves life shattered.

Brokenness engulfs all of us.

The only true and lasting hope for brokenness is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. His body was broken so that we would experience His presence, love and power as we live out our own brokenness in a world of brokenness.

It is the message of the Gospel that Jesus compels us to share.

Every one of us is a missionary. Each of us is called not only to experience His presence and healing, not only to live the Gospel, but also to verbalize the life-transforming, Godrestoring, redemption available in the cross of Christ. Can you imagine a missionary who never talks about Jesus?

I’m broken. Just ask my wife, Mary Kaye. You are broken as well. The body of Christ was broken for our redemption. God desires that the Gospel would transform our brokenness in the midst of a broken world. And He desires that we would engage the brokenhearted in relational, compassionate and bold ways.

Our God is loving, gracious, sovereign and just. He has a good and perfect plan for us. Though sin now reigns in this world, it doesn’t have to reign in our lives. Through faith in Jesus, God applies Christ’s broken body to our broken life. The sin that brought brokenness was placed on the sinless One who became broken for us. Our Sin-bearer now sends us out into a broken world to allow His love and light to shine through our own redeemed brokenness. In this setting we are to tell the world about the One who was broken for them.

Though we deserted and violated our Creator, He did not abandon us. With our life in a state of disarray and disorder, Jesus comes to offer us abundant life. When we are weakened and infirmed, He offers His strength. While grief easily crushes us, His compassion and presence bring comfort. When physical or spiritual bankruptcy befalls us, His resources never run dry. When life is out of order, He bids us to come to Him for rest.

Such amazing grace is far too precious to keep to ourselves.

This is why I am praying and believing that the Lord would give you, and the entire Bay Area family, a spirit of boldness in sharing the Gospel with your friends, family and those whom He divinely brings into your life.

Jesus describes His ministry in Luke 4 by quoting from Isaiah,

“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn.”

Isaiah 61:1-2

May each of us be used daily by Jesus as His instruments to help bind up the brokenhearted.

What exactly is an evangelical?

The news is full of expressions of evangelicals supporting Donald Trump or Ted Cruz or being antiHillary or whatever. But many people don’t know what an evangelical really is. They sometimes get it confused with evangelism somehow.

Here’s the main idea: Evangelicals believe the Bible to be true and believe in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. A simple review of 2 Peter will show the linkage of the two terms: 2 Peter 1:11 For in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.

2 Peter 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world by the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and are overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

2 Peter 3:2 That you should remember the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior spoken by your apostles.

2 Peter 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

The term “evangelical” comes from the Greek word euangelion, which means 6 GO&MAKE A P R IL

“the good news” or the “gospel.” Ergo, the evangelical faith focuses on the “good news” of salvation brought by Jesus Christ.

Evangelicals are a vibrant and diverse group, including believers found in many churches, denominations and nations. The community brings together Reformed, Holiness, Anabaptist, Pentecostal, Charismatic and other traditions.

There are four major issues for evangelicals; if you believe all four then you’re an evangelical, technically: 1. Conversion: the belief that lives need to be transformed through a “born-again” experience and a lifelong process of following Jesus.

2. Going: Evangelicals want to make a difference in the world through spiritual missionary work and social helpfulness to man.

3. Authority: The Bible is our one and only authority for life practice and belief. Evangelicals have a very high view of the Scripture and believe it is to be obeyed.

4. Sacrifice: A stress on the teaching of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, making the redemption of humanity possible. No other way is acceptable.

The term evangelical came into play in the ‘30s and ‘40s when another term fell out of favor: fundamentalism.

This is all quite complex, and historians banter over the interplay, but there is no doubt in my mind that fundamentalism is the forerunner of the mainly North American concept of evangelicalism. Fundamentalism believed in literal miracles of the Bible, including the virgin birth and the resurrection of Jesus. They formed

this thought process to fight against the liberal left, which was attacking the Bible’s authority through “higher criticism” of anything the Bible said that was supernatural.

All being a fundamentalist means is you believe in a strong, literal interpretation of the narratives of the Bible. That being said, I can gladly call myself a fundamentalist. Where the term got a bad name is normally ascribed to 1925 and the Scopes trial against evolution being taught in the public school (you can Google that).

Even though the fundamentalists won the verdict and Creation was considered to be important for public schools in those days, the battle put the fundamentalists in a “non-smart” light. They became synonymous with anti-intellectual, anti-science, anti-education and, well, just antieverything.

That’s approximately when a new term that included fundamental beliefs, and more, was coined: evangelical.

You can study this yourself; it’s interesting history that includes people like Carl F. Henry and William Jennings Bryan, as well as institutions like Dallas Theological Seminary.

Bottom line: I am a proud, card-carrying member of the evangelical movement and don’t mind being labeled, called or defined as a fundamentalist. I believe in miracles and the Scripture to be completely true.

BOOK: The Knowledge of the Holy AUTHOR: A.W. Tozer

contemplate, meditate, wonder – we pay the “heavy price of secularization of our religion and the decay of our inner lives.”

He continues in the same paragraph:

This small book by Tozer has sold over 500,000 copies. It truly is world famous in Christendom, and focuses on the majesty of God and living in the Spirit.

It explains the nature of God and shows us all how to rejuvenate our prayer life and experience God’s presence daily.

Let me quote right from the book: “It is not a cheerful thought that millions of us who live in a land of Bibles, who belong to churches and labor to promote the Christian religion, may yet pass our whole life on this earth without once having thought or tried to think seriously about the being of God. Few of us have let our hearts gaze in wonder at the ‘I AM.’” He goes on to say that we prefer to think in the realms of the practical, relevant and easy. However, since we don’t “think” about God much –

“…because we are the handiwork of God, it follows that all our problems and their solutions are theological (emphasis his). Some knowledge of what kind of God it is that operates the universe is indispensable to a sound philosophy of life and a sane outlook on the world.”

A.W. Tozer lived in the middle of the last century. He preached in Christian Missionary Alliance churches for quite some time. A pacifist on the main and a preacher who did not have an advanced theological degree, he became extremely influential later in life, and after his death in 1963, his books became prolific and popular.

Tozer doesn’t mince words. He’s fairly prophetic in that he thought the Church at large was in deep trouble due to what he called “a lazy approach” to Christianity. He thought many believers were Christians in name only and that the Scripture hadn’t penetrated most lives in any significant way.

are on the fundamentals of theology (namely God, prayer and meditation).

His perspective is that to be a Christian, one has to have a high view of Scripture and apply it to one’s everyday existence. He had no tolerance for the person who was an “easy believist” – that is, someone who claimed the name of Jesus but lived according to the world’s standards (living together, drunkenness, unethical business practices, etc.). His points are crisply made and quite short in length (“Knowledge of the Holy” is only 112 pages).

Most every major preacher has used A.W. Tozer in their sermons and writings. He is a king among kings when it comes to literature and is an expert in cutting through the morass of gobbledygook that fills our Christian bookstores and TV airways. “The Knowledge of the Holy” is a theological treatise on the very nature of God. It should be in your library. Trust me.

I grew up going to a small and super

traditional Episcopal church in South Baltimore, close to the stadiums. Back in the day, nobody wanted to live around there; now the hipster thing to do is move into these kinds of neighborhoods. My mom played the organ, my grandmother ran Sunday School for kids, and my grandfather was on the governing board. The church regularly engaged the community with suppers and fairs, even a theatre group when I was young.

Needless to say, I was always at church, hardly ever missing a Sunday except during summer.

While I count all of this as a gift in my life, it did not directly translate into a relationship with God. There wasn’t much of the Bible being taught, and no real challenge to take Jesus seriously.

This became very evident when I finished high school and started college and the temptations to sin increased tenfold. When it came down to it, I was more excited to live for pleasure than for purpose, for comfort over character, and for getting worldly highs over holiness.

In fact, there was a prayer that we recited together as a congregation every Sunday that I had to say with a lie in my heart: “Have mercy upon us, Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; For thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past; And grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honor and glory of thy Name…” It was that last part, that newness of life part, that I had no intention of honoring because I wanted to party on Monday. It always felt weird lying to God. While I was actually lying to my Savior in saying that prayer, I was also believing a lie – that the things I want to do that do not honor God will actually bring me joy. We all do this at times: We buy into the offer of peace outside of the peacemaker, and we think we have

joy without the true joy giver. We allow false gods, lousy lords and blatant sin to continue as we half heartedly follow Jesus.

like for the first time we were hearing the clear message of the forgiveness of sins through faith in Jesus, and that in obedience to Him we would have joy.

In a passage on which I preached in March, I was struck by the devotion to Jesus of a woman who had made her living as a prostitute. When she crashed a dinner party to honor Jesus, everyone knew this woman and how she made her living. She was a picture of and participant in the relational and sexual brokenness of our world. Integral to her occupation was how she presented herself to her clients: her dress, her attitude, even her scent. It is likely that she relied on a small alabaster vial of perfume, a fragrant ointment, to push her temptation into all the senses of the curious and potential clients. This would have been an integral tool of her trade.

After this there followed an inner desire to pour out our alabaster flasks on the feet of Jesus. It started with purity. We didn’t always get it right, but we had a new desire to honor God in our bodies as a non-married couple. In conjunction with that came self-control with alcohol, and we lost the desire to want to get drunk, or use other drugs for that matter. We were more convicted about our speech, and how we used our very words. Not too long after all of this we got married, and after 12 years I can tell you, Jesus is still lovingly showing us flasks we are still holding onto – self-reliance, pride and lust, just to name a few.

Interestingly this is a leading detail that the Gospel writer Luke provides for us when we first learn about this woman: she “brought an alabaster flask of ointment.” This woman had the courage to do something I could not in those early days of walking with Jesus – to pour out the old life, so she can please Jesus with a new one. In that moment she was redeeming the evil purpose of her flask, and now with a contrite heart, she is separating herself from the lies that she had believed. This was a lady who had heard Jesus’ offer of forgiveness and was embracing it the way we all should, wholeheartedly – turning from anything that is not pleasing to Him. From forgiveness flows devotion, and true devotion includes repentance.

The promise of new life, the lifestyle of being forgiven, is extended to us each day by the grace of God. What is required of us is the faith to pour out the old life, believing that healing, restoration, joy and peace will be poured into these empty jars of ours. Today is probably a good day to consider your alabaster flasks, hold them up in light of Jesus’ great love for you, and pour them out in expectant obedience. May our good Father in heaven fill your world with all the best things, as you make room for Him.

I had no major desire to repent, or change much in my lifestyle during those college days until God watered the seeds that had been planted all of those years, on all of those Sundays, and during all of those suppers and fairs. This happened when Kristen and I started learning about the love and grace of God through some friends in a Bible study. It seemed

he flight down was filled with laughter and bonding. From occasional jokes to more serious conversations, we were all eager to get started. The team focus was the same in that we all were excited to see what God was going to do through us.

This common focus is what brought us very close in such a short period of time.

The team consisted of five guys – Andy Gish, Ben Alford, Ben Snedecor, Greg McKnight and myself – and two girls, Maranda Ratcliff and Amy McClellan.

All of us agreed that this trip meant a lot more than the difference between going home and doing nothing for a week or going to a beach. Maranda was excited to experience a different culture, Greg got his inspiration from a book and Ben Alford wants to become a doctor and knew this was a good opportunity to see about possibly being a missionary doctor.

As we made our final approach into San Salvador, you could see the beach in the distance. There were tons of trees and you could feel the heat right as you stepped off the aircraft onto the jetway.

Roberto picked us up and took us to the hotel. There, Sarah briefed us about the culture and our plans for the week. We were all excited to finally be there and were ready to proclaim God’s kingdom.

On Sunday we attended church at the Great Commission Church where pastor Victor Turcios leads the local community.

The message encouraged each person to talk to someone about the Bible once a week. After church we went to pastor Victor’s house for lunch, then headed up to the Guayabo children’s center to take a tour and help with a bit of construction.

After that we proceeded back to the hotel for the night. It was amazing to all of us how hardworking the people are. There was not one person standing around and not helping. It inspired all of us to work just that much harder.

On Monday and Tuesday we went to Ceren School, which is a private high school. We attended a total of over 14 classes in which we presented the gospel with a theme of finding one’s identity in Christ. We constructed a skit in which all of us played a stereotypical identity at a high school. This led into short talks given by each member of the team, including

testimonies and the gospel itself. At the end of the talk we gave all the students in the room the opportunity to accept Christ into their life. We witnessed a lot of students accept Christ over those two days; it was incredible to see hands raised of people who accepted Him after they said the prayer.

We also played soccer with the kids and then with the faculty. This was one of the most fun parts of the entire week. I think I can say for the group that the best part of the week was seeing kids’ lives changed in an instant.

Wednesday through Friday was spent at the children’s centers. On Wednesday we visited the Soyapongo children’s center, which is located in the middle of an area with high gang activity. We never felt unsafe though; the gangs respected the children’s center and what we were doing there. We mainly spent the day playing with the kids and some people led a women’s Bible study with the moms. This was highly rewarding and we all had a great time serving there.

We spent Thursday and Friday serving at the Guayabo center. We played

with the kids and went on house visits in groups of two and three to local community families. This was a rewarding experience because we were able to touch the lives of those who are considerably less fortunate than we are.

Even though they do not have much, they were very welcoming and listened to what we had to say. It was humbling and definitely made me very thankful for what I have.

The last day was a lot of fun and God was really moving as well. Ben Alford was baptized for the first time at the resort we were at for the afternoon. It was truly amazing seeing a strong Christian like Ben outwardly express his faith to total strangers. I was also baptized but mine was a recommitment to my faith. I felt that my first baptism was not symbolic and I was still immature in my faith. Later that day we went to the youth meeting at the church where I led worship and others gave testimonies and told stories from the Bible. Andy ended with another telling of the Gospel and offering to anyone who wanted to accept Christ. We don’t know if anyone did, but we hope that some really took the message to heart.

Overall the trip was a major success and I know that we are all changed in some way, whether that be in our walks with Jesus or finding out who we truly are in Christ. Either way I can honestly say this was the best experience I have ever had and myself and the team cannot wait to go back in the future. We will take what we learned here and use it to become lights of God’s kingdom at the Naval Academy. God worked incredible things over this trip and I can’t wait to see what else he does in El Salvador.

MISSIONAL COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: ROLLINS & FRANCO

utting a new spin on “ladies’ night,” one of Bay Area’s many thriving Missional Communities consists of young women who meet on Sunday nights to share their love for God and support each other and the greater community. Michele Rollins, Katie Franco and Natalee Stiles steer the group, seamlessly pooling their strengths and spiritual gifts as they lead and learn along with the other ladies in their group.

This community of young women came together this past fall. Michele, who was trained as a Missional Community leader, was in search of a community to shepherd while Katie had a handful of ladies who needed a leader. “I didn’t want to teach because I already did that as a day job,” laughed Katie, who is a Spanish teacher at Chesapeake Bay Middle School and a newlywed.

Michele and Katie to each other. “It was ideal. We had a leader without a group and group without a leader,” said Michele. “I absolutely know that God put this group together and it’s really cool how we complement each other.”

Katie opted to take on an administrative role and Michele agreed to lead the discussions. “We struck a perfect balance,” said Katie.

Natalee Stiles rounds out the group’s leadership, taking charge of prayer requests and follow-up. “Nat is also a natural at the love languages of gifts and thoughtfulness,” said Michele, citing how Natalee recently presented a fellow MC member with a phone case inscribed with a Bible verse.

The three collaborated to create a vision for their MC. “We really focus on authenticity in discipleship and growth in community. We want to reflect Jesus to each other and to the world around us,” explained Michele. “Each person is taking a further step in faith and we

want to show this to our friends and neighbors and everyone around us— reflecting Jesus in every capacity.”

The group regularly gathers as six to eight attendees but at full roster includes about a dozen young women who are in their 20s and early 30s. They meet weekly at Michele’s house in Annapolis. Upon arrival, they catch up with each other on the past week’s events. Once they’ve settled in, Katie shares administrative items and upcoming events and then a member of the group usually shares her testimony. From there, the group delves into the weekly Bible narrative, with one person who was previously selected summarizing the story. After reading the narrative together, they discuss applications and the practical steps they can each take toward implementation.

“One of my prayers coming into this was being able to grow community. I wanted people to be real and never feel judged about not knowing answers,” shared Michele. “We have a mix of women and

Some have never heard Bible stories before and some have grown up in faith, but everyone has something to share.”

Katie echoed, “We are diverse and have very different stories but each person brings something unique to our group.”

Katie and Michele both thought of community member McKenzie Bedra, who is new to her faith.

“McKenzie has so much enthusiasm,” commended Katie. “And she chose her faith.”

Not raised in a religious home, McKenzie said she tried out churches with friends a few times in high school but never felt too comfortable. Seven years ago McKenzie watched her father lose his battle with cancer. Now she works with cancer patients: She moved to the area this past October to manage the Clinical Research and Cancer Registry at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center.

She came to Bay Area with a fellow believer and felt the seeds that had been planted all along start to germinate.

“I knew there was something missing.

There was a void and I needed something to fill it,” said McKenzie. “I think one of the reasons I was drawn to seek out God is because I see people in their last days and hours. As hard as it is, this is where I am meant to be.” McKenzie said her faith will enable her to further bless others and have an impact in a bigger way.

“My group has totally taken me under their wings,” McKenzie said. “I didn’t know anyone and I didn’t know the Bible very well but I’ve really dug into it.” She said that her MC also lovingly devised “The Kenzie Rule,” so if you don’t have an immediate personal application for a Bible story or a key question, you can simply talk about how it impacted you.

“I love the community feeling in our group. You can be yourself and share your stories and there is no judging,” McKenzie explained. She is also

committed to serving others, so the group’s outreach in the community is important to her.

At Christmas, the group jumped in to help sort Gifts for Children donations, and more recently they put together an ice cream sundae party for Winter Relief guests. Since a few of the MC members work in healthcare, they are making plans to regularly volunteer in the longterm care nursing home where Natalie works as a recreational therapist.

The group also gathers for birthdays, celebratory occasions and to socialize.

They keep up with each other through their group Facebook page and text each other during the week. Offering lots of laughs, love and learning, the MC welcomes young women to come, check them out and get to know the group that has quickly transformed from a collection of strangers to a close community of friends.

here is a revolution that has come upon the evangelical church in the last 20 years.

Originally labeled a fad or trend by many, it is here to stay. I’m referring to the multi-site church revolution. Last Sunday more than 5 million people (9 percent of all Protestant churchgoers) worshipped at a multi-site location. With the opening of the chapel in March 2015, Bay Area became a multisite church: one church meeting in two locations at 884 Chesterfield Road. With the official launch of Bay Area Easton on Easter, we are now one church meeting in three locations. (By the way, God is on the move in Easton with over a hundred people enthusiastically meeting for weekly gatherings and four Missional Communities!) Since many are not familiar with multi-site churches, I’m writing to share a bit of our journey into multi-site.

First, what is a multi-site church?

A multi-site church is one church meeting in multiple locations sharing a common vision, philosophy of ministry, doctrine, budget and leadership. That’s easy to grasp when it comes to the chapel located at our Annapolis campus. But it equally applies to our Easton campus that gathers on Sundays at The Milestone, a hotel on the Eastern Shore. Craig Fadel, our campus pastor, and Rachel Pletts, our worship leader in Easton, are part of the Bay Area staff team and participate in all staff events.

Why did Bay Area decide to become a multi-site church?

The short answer is because God led us to do so. We didn’t intentionally set out to begin multi-site campuses. The decision for the chapel was birthed out of our commitment to make room for people and avoid taking on debt.

We also recognized the desire of many for a softer worship environment. As to Easton, over two years ago several members of our church family who live on the Eastern Shore approached us to help them plant a church “like Bay Area.”

A Missional Community was birthed.

Shortly thereafter, Craig and Mary Fadel felt led to move to Easton and help provide leadership while we searched for a church planter. After more than a year of searching, the elders – with the encouragement of our Easton families – felt the Lord leading us to launch another location of Bay Area.

What are the advantages of a multi-site church?

One of the greatest advantages of multisite is the ability to bring the resources of an existing, growing church to bear a new campus. In Easton, we are able to bring staff and finances to ensure from the beginning that the worship, children’s ministry, preaching and Missional Communities are at the same Bay Area standard. In addition, the new church plant doesn’t have to go through the rigorous process of determining mission, vision, values, beliefs and ministry approaches. Those joining the multi-site in Easton will go through our same Ministry Partner orientation, participate in Make the Trade and Serve Like Jesus, and share in all the ministries, resources, and training we enjoy. Also, a multi-site location allows the campus pastor to focus his time and efforts on providing leadership for the disciplemaking ministries of the church without the time-consuming responsibility of preparing sermons.

What are the disadvantages of a multi-site church?

For one, not everybody connects with a sermon that is not preached by a pastor who is physically present. Though it is true that most prefer to have a message live-preached, for the vast majority it is not a hindrance. Another issue is that a multi-site is typically by design a “clone” of the mother church, sharing the same DNA. That’s great for reaching people who connect with that particular church style and culture (which is the case in Easton). In contrast, a church plant is birthed organically out of the harvest of lost people so that the new church is more contextualized to people who might not connect with the satellite church. For this reason, we are committed to both church planting and multi-site.

So, Bay Area is now both planting churches and starting multi-site locations?

to see His mission of making passionate, maturing followers of Jesus from here to the nations become a reality. As a result, we plan on starting a residency program that will help us equip church planters, campus pastors, church leaders and global missionaries to serve the body of Christ.

How do you decide whether you will plant or open another campus?

The answer is a pragmatic one. We ask ourselves, “What is God doing? Which will most fruitfully further the kingdom of God?” When God raises up someone with the gifts and calling to plant a church, we lock arms with this future lead planter to equip, resource and send him. The same is true for the person who is called to provide leadership of a campus of Bay Area, or for that matter to serve as a global missionary. Our mission is from here to the nations so we are constantly looking and expecting the Lord to answer the prayer of Jesus when He says “pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers” (Matt. 9:38).

What can I do to be a part of this multi-site revolution?

I love this question! Here is how: surrender yourself fully to Jesus and grow more into His likeness in community. See yourself as His “sent one” (John 20:21). Embrace the vision of Bay Area: “Every One a Missionary.” As each of us lives on mission, the Lord will raise up from within our body those whom He is calling to be part of future multi-site campuses and church plants. Take up the towel and basin to serve these future expressions of church through your time, talents and treasure. Currently, Bay Area Easton has many volunteer needs that you could help fill as they begin to grow.

And finally, remember that the church of Jesus is a living, dynamic organism, so be Spirit-led, flexible and open to change as He leads us forward.

Yes! We continue to plant churches throughout the Mid-Atlantic region through the SENT Network. Currently we’ve helped plant eight churches, with several more church planters in the pipeline. With the fruit seen in Easton, we are also in the process of seeking God’s mind about future multi-site locations. April 16, 2007, dawned a normal day. Hours later, a mass shooting left the Virginia Tech community in shock. It was the first time Marcus Wiles experienced communal mourning. At the time, he was a sophomore in college, and with only two years of Christian leadership with a local homegroup under his belt, Marcus faced his first crucible.

By Sam Logan “For many students who lived far from home, we were the first line of family. I was living off campus at the time, so we opened our doors to people living on campus, had meals together, and it gave us an opportunity to show how Christians respond to evil,” Marcus said, recalling the days and weeks that followed the shooting.

Prior to attending Virginia Tech and participating in the campus Christian community, Marcus had always been involved in church. Born outside of Chicago, he went to elementary school in Severna Park, Maryland, and has lived in the area since.

“I have been active in the church for as long as I can remember,” Marcus, who now serves as a deacon at Bay Area, said. Focused on learning as much of the Bible as he could in his youth, Marcus found a deeper relationship with the Lord when he entered middle school and began to pray “to God for real, not just in front of other people."

Walking through the campuswide grief at Virginia Tech after the shooting in 2007, Marcus grew in faith, and began exploring teaching outside of his childhood church. At the same time, he visited Bay Area Community Church back home one Sunday. He decided to explore further, and spent time at Bay Area while at home on break and during the summer before graduating.

After graduating in 2009, Marcus began to attend Bay Area full time and quickly joined a Missional Community.

“Honestly, I was trying not to get involved in any leadership roles. I had been leading most of the activities I was involved in, was always involved in leadership.

[So] I wanted to take some time to learn from mature Christians,” he said.

Yet once cemented in an MC, Marcus sought to serve more. He soon found himself helping with Learning Communities, where he filled in “once in a while.” He recalled helping with an LC called “Starting Point,” a course for those who are new to faith.

Recounting how serving led to leadership, Marcus described when a close friend approached him for advice: “I had another friend [who once told] me he might be called to be a pastor but wasn’t sure, and asked for advice,” Marcus said, thinking about his own path toward serving as deacon at Bay Area. “Sometimes through prayer with other people, and with the Holy Spirit speaking through you, you have some wisdom that you don’t know where it came from. So I shared with this friend, ‘If you’re not sure if you should be a pastor yet, maybe you should just consider all of the different qualifications that you see

specifically in the title of an elder.’ So I made a list myself of the qualifications of deacon and elder."

Marcus added, “If you start living toward these qualifications and down the road God says, ‘All right, I want you to be a pastor or an elder,’ at least you’ve [been] working on that list for a while in terms of your personal character. Let’s say God never makes that call. What’s the worst that can happen? You’re still practicing things that are great for your family and for your personal walk."

Living by this list was step one for Marcus, before he had ever felt called, just walking with the Lord. And then he was nominated. In that moment, he had never considered serving as a deacon.

"Being a deacon is a ministry related to mercy and grace," Marcus said, admitting, “and those were not my highestscoring spiritual gifts in the past. So it was a call through a nomination that made me consider it, and I found an opportunity that God had for me to grow in an area that wasn’t always my primary focus. It is a humble role, and the role of a servant for sure.”

As a deacon at Bay Area, 30-year-old Marcus isn’t intimidated by being perceived as young for the role.

He spoke of Timothy, who was younger than many of his counterparts when he led the church at Ephesus. He recalled the charge Paul gave his protégé in 1 Timothy 4:12, where he writes, "Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”

Looking back over the years that led him to where he now lives in West River with his wife Christie, their pets, and his Buell Firebolt motorcycle, Marcus agrees that his time at Virginia Tech imprinted on him an experience he still draws from today. After the shooting, Marcus was grieving with others while sharing God's goodness in the midst of pain. There are moments as a deacon when that experience gives him wisdom and strength today.

As a deacon, Marcus is focused on serving those in the church family who are in need. “I hope that I fulfill the Acts 6 call to take care of the needy in our body to free the elders up for the important ministry work of prayer and teaching the Word,” he said. “I think our pastors and elders do such a fantastic job of steering the large Bay Area ship, and I hope that the benevolence focus of the deacon ministry at Bay Area helps free them up for that task. They can focus on oversight and shepherding and know that the struggling within the body are well cared for."

At Bay Area Community Church, we believe every one who calls Jesus Lord is a missionary, sent by Him to make disciples.

Whether it’s our home, workplace, community or a foreign country, we all have a mission field; we all know people who need to hear about the truth and love of Jesus. But it’s not always easy. The busyness of parenting, demanding jobs, financial struggles and other challenges threaten to get in the way. Yet we are called to be faithful in every circumstance.

The following five stories highlight members of our church family who are devoted to being and making followers of Jesus regardless of their age or stage in life.

Maeve Morrissey Maeve Morrissey is out the door by 6 a.m. Exercise beckons early, alleviating the stress of nursing school.

The 18-year-old junior in college commutes from her family’s home in Annapolis to the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, where classes occupy her schedule from 8:30 a.m. to late afternoon. Studying dominates her evenings, too; she commutes home, spends time with her family, completes her school work and hits the hay.

Repeat.

Swimming, reading, singing and nursing a classic collegekid caffeine addiction take priority when she’s not studying or spending time with her biological or spiritual families at home and church.

Campus, on the other hand, is lonely for Maeve – not for a lack of friends, but because she feels very much like the only Christian in the group of people she’s met during her first semester at UMD. At Anne Arundel Community College, Maeve partnered with fellow student and faculty believers to launch Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) on campus and learned how to plan Bible studies.

She loves getting to know people, so functioning as a lone believer in her collegiate sphere of influence doesn’t dampen her passion for telling others about Jesus. She shared about two fellow students – from Pakistan and Nepal – with whom God has opened doors for her to build relationships.

The girls are an answer to Maeve’s prayer that God would give her opportunities to speak His truth in love to others – something she devotes her spare time to each week at Bay Area Community Church. Maeve serves as a community group leader for ninth-grade girls – an age at which she faced a pivotal moment in her faith.

Baptized at the age of four, Maeve understood God early on, but it wasn’t until she experienced her parents’ forgiveness and heard the depth of what Jesus had done for her at a middle school retreat that she fully grasped what the gospel meant for her.

Today, as a busy college student, she prioritizes sharing that truth with 14-year-olds who are sorting through concerns about identity and fitting in as they navigate their first year of high school.

“If you come down here, you have to go to church and you have to go to school.”

Dennis “Bubby” Coale’s great-grandmother had two conditions when she welcomed him and his 15-year-old sister into her South Carolina home two years after their parents divorced.

They accepted her terms, and 14-year-old Bubby – dubbed so by his sister before she was old enough to pronounce “brother” – began attending her Southern Baptist church.

After talking to them over dinner at Wendy’s one night, the youth pastor asked Bubby and his sister if they would like to pray and accept the Lord. Both gave their lives to Christ that evening, nearly 40 years ago.

Bubby married at 24. He and his wife separated when their youngest was 12. He went out with a woman for one lunch and one dinner, but felt God convict him to remain single.

At first, he wasn’t happy about it; Bubby desired to be in a relationship again. But after a period of waiting, he found himself at peace with being single. “OK Lord,” he surrendered, “whatever you want, I’m fine with it.”

Referring to 1 Corinthians 7, he added, “Like Paul said, if you’re married you have to worry about the things of the world, and there’s nothing wrong with that. But if you’re single, you can devote your whole life, and that’s what I’ve done.”

Bubby’s lifelong commitment to serving his Savior developed when he stepped out of his comfort zone and went on his first mission trip to Cuba. He has returned to the island nation five times, and has served on mission trips to India and Poland as well.

Stateside, Bubby views fellow singles and recovering alcoholics as his mission field: He talks about God and is intentional in building relationships at Celebrate Recovery and Alcoholics Anonymous, and pours into his friends’ lives in their Missional Community for singles.

At Bay Area, Bubby’s greatest passion – he explained as his 5-year-old granddaughter climbed into his lap and rested her head on his shoulder – is serving in Children’s Ministry. Since accepting Jesus at 14, Bubby has served in every age group more than once.

When he arrived at Bay Area, he thought his days of serving children had come to a close. But “the next thing you know,” Bubby said, he was serving monthly, then weekly, discipling the youngest members of his church family.

Today he serves with 1-year-olds, though lately he’s been feeling led to get involved with students with special needs.

Bubby’s lifestyle of sacrificially giving his time to anyone in need models his conviction that every one who is a part of the body of Christ is called to serve. He said with a smile, “If we all did something on Sunday morning, there would be no need.”

judith kinkead It wasn’t by mistake that Judy Kinkead was paired with Connie as roommates at a conference over 20 years ago; it was the beginning of a lifelong friendship. Years earlier, nearly 35 years ago today, Judy’s husband passed away. In the mid ‘90s, Connie and her husband – both new believers in Jesus – invited Judy to stay with them for a few months while she rented her own home.

Connie asked Judy if she would like to do a Bible study. She rolled her eyes, but wanted to be a good guest, so she agreed. They started in Romans, and Judy thought, “I’m not a sinner; I’m a good person.”

Connie persisted, inviting Judy to church. For months, every sermon pierced Judy’s heart. One Sunday in 1997 it all clicked; Judy responded to an invitation to accept Jesus, praying at the front of the church alongside others who wanted to know Him. Today, the 75-year-old member of the Bay Area church family spends much of her time doing what Connie did for her two decades earlier: pointing others to Jesus. Judy has a heart for the lost because she was lost for so long, she explained.

So, she plants seeds. Judy serves her friends and neighbors by making and taking them meals, and telling them about Jesus. She wears her faith on her sleeve around family members who don’t want to listen. She prays for them often.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays, she helps facilitate Bible Study Fellowship (an in-depth, interdenominational Bible study), a role she’s filled for 12 years. She’s preparing to return to Poland this summer, too, on a short term mission trip.

Judy went on her first mission trip when she had been a believer for just four years. “I still talk about it,” she said, recalling fondly, “I’ve never had so much fun in my entire life.”

Looking forward to her upcoming mission trip, she noted, “When God calls – and I know His voice – I go. I have no idea what He wants me to do there.

He has the plan. I’m just going in obedience and trusting Him.” Likewise, she trusts Him with her friends who don’t know Jesus. One neighbor who moved away over a year ago is like a son to her; he calls and checks in on her regularly. When Judy declined his recent invitation to come over for dinner because she was sick, he went to the store for her, cleaned her dishes, and filled her pellet stove. As he left, Judy told him, “I love you, and Jesus loves you.”

“You’re always telling me that,” he replied.

“Yes,” she said, “and I’m always going to tell you that.”

nick & Leniza Arellano LeNiza Arellano’s full-time job demands long hours, but the work is rewarding. And she adores her young officemates: Zeina is 6, Evelyn will be 4 this summer, and Harrison is fast approaching his second birthday.

Being mom to three young kids keeps the 30-year-old California transplant incredibly busy, but she doesn’t keep them so busy that their family doesn’t have time to serve others. Extracurricular activities take a backseat in the Arellano household so that LeNiza and her husband Nick can safeguard time to serve their church family – a top priority for them.

When Nick and LeNiza relocated from the West Coast to Annapolis eight years ago, they searched for a new church that was similar to the one they attended back home.

They landed at Bay Area. In Cali, they both served at their church; they had the abilities to meet several needs, and they enjoyed it. But serving didn’t become a priority until they found themselves on the flipside of that need.

Twenty-eight of Tim and Leslie Dotson’s 31 married years have been spent at Bay Area Community Church.

Parents of three adult children, the Dotsons have served in Children’s and Student ministries and participated in every building campaign. They’ve led a Missional Community, and in fall 2013, Tim was installed as an elder – though they’ve decided to put both on hold for now, as their personal ministry has evolved into caring for the ones who first cared for them.

Leslie’s 81-year-old mom was diagnosed with lung cancer a little over a year ago. With a strong will to live – Leslie noted her mom is the most determined, courageous woman – she underwent chemotherapy and radiation despite frailty and a heart condition. The treatment went remarkably well. She enjoyed a summer spent with family and friends, but on her late-November birthday, she returned to the hospital. The cancer had metastasized to her brain.

“I don’t think it hit me how important serving is until we needed to be served,” LeNiza admitted, explaining, “When I was pregnant with Harrison, I had a really dangerous condition. [People serving us] was an amazing blessing to me when we needed help. Even the smallest acts of serving show Jesus’ love in a really tangible way.”

In December, she underwent whole-brain radiation, but declined quickly thereafter. She’s been living with Leslie and Tim since mid-January. Though caregiving has been physically and emotionally exhausting for the Dotsons, Leslie noted they’ve placed their hope in Jesus and their trust in God’s character – He’s good, faithful and gracious in all circumstances.

Today, she devotes much of her time to voluntarily coleading the Wave Riders play group, and helps Children’s Ministry leaders plan for Sundays during the week.

She sings on the worship team, and serves in Women’s Ministry, too: In March, she led a session during the women’s conference.

Tim emphasized his desire for his mother-in-law to be at peace. “We really see our role right now as encouraging her to be open to whatever God has for her – certainly, miracles happen every day – but to lovingly hold her hand with the idea that she could be coming close to the end of her life,” he said.

Likewise, Nick lends a hand with setup, making creative elements, and cleanup at Christmastime and for special occasions. But his greatest service to his church family, arguably, is his service to his own family: He often watches the kids so LeNiza can spend more time at church.

Tim noted being surrounded by family has blessed his mother-in-law significantly. Her great-grandson Everett was born in September; she lights up with joy every time she sees him. Leslie added, “I tell my mom all the time God loves her so much because she has family and lifelong friends who encourage her and love her.”

For the Arellanos, verbally sharing Jesus’ love is just as important as showing it. Nick is open about his faith at work, and is there for his friends with prayer and encouragement when they’re struggling. He and LeNiza enjoy hosting dinners at their home, where they love on and serve their friends from both inside and outside of church.

They minister to their extended family as well, though Nick and LeNiza agree their most important ministry right now is discipling the three curly heads running around their home: their kids. “We’re constantly trying to remind our children that God loves them and He’s there for their support, and they can talk to Him and seek His guidance, seek His help, whenever they’re feeling sad,” Nick said.

LeNiza echoed, “I just so much want them to know Jesus and to know their Heavenly Father.”

The Dotsons have been encouraged by their church family – the bulk of the meals, prayers and visits they’ve received have come from Bay Area friends, and their family members have really taken notice of the outpouring of support.

“Right now, our ministry is really our family,” Tim highlighted. “We have a lot of family coming in and out, which is a great opportunity to witness and show them we’re living out our faith – that’s where our strength is coming from during a difficult season.”

WINTER RELIEF: HOW WAS JESUS’ LOVE SHARED?

What a week. In mid-March, Bay Area housed 30 homeless men and women for seven consecutive nights.

Our church family provided 1,680 hours of comfortable sleeping conditions, 630 meals, over 100 showers, and countless laughs. More than 150 volunteers committed many hours to loving these men and women.

It was easy to love these guests. John Jr., although he’s missing a few teeth, has a fantastic smile and one of the most infectious laughs. He works as a freelance car repairman – his skills are legendary in the Annapolis area. He loves spending time on the track racing his ‘67 Camaro (pushing 1,000 horsepower) in the quarter mile. He enjoys movies and tries to see his 14 children and 21 grandchildren as often as he can (which isn’t as often as he’d like). John is also a recovering addict and, like anyone, has his good days and bad days. I’m not sure what a bad day looks like for him, though, because, in the three years I’ve known him, I’ve never seen him without a smile on his face.

Sharon has lived in Annapolis and Kent Island since 1991, calling Maryland her home. She has a 25-year-old son, too.

One of her favorite memories as a kid is roller-skating; she said that’s something she’d love to do right now if she could.

Unfortunately, she has arthritis in her 26 GO&MAKE A P R IL

knees. She doesn’t have a job currently, which is the biggest barrier keeping her from where she wants to be. With diabetes and neuropathy, too, she has all the reason to be a grouch, but you’d never know she’s dealing with pain and discomfort due to her constant laughter.

And she always has a smile; she brought out the best in the group.

Kareem also has a great smile and laugh.

He grew up in Prince George’s County, went to high school in Baltimore and found himself in Annapolis after his parents and girlfriend kicked him out.

Despite that and the many jobs he has held over his few adult years, he seems unaffected, always walking around with a smile. While with us, Kareem applied for jobs every day. He is committed to finding work and getting back on his feet – all the while remaining joy-filled.

Sarah was fantastic, too. She grew up playing softball with one of our Winter Relief Core Team leaders. The two of them spent hours catching up since the last time they saw one another over 20 years ago. Our leader fought back tears several times throughout the week, knowing they both grew up together, were teammates as kids, and lived similar lives until 2008.

When the market crashed, Sarah lost her job immediately and then slowly lost everything else. She has been homeless for several years now. Regardless, she remains a warm, kind-hearted woman.

Janet Graves, Women’s Ministry Director, spent a morning serving breakfast to our guests. She left with a question in her mind that has weighed heavy on my heart as well. She said, “Talking to them with dignity [at Bay Area] made me wonder if I would talk to them the same way if I met them later on the street. God sees them and loves them and so should I.”

“ IF I MET JOHN ON THE STREET, WOULD I SHOW CHRIST’S LOVE TO HIM?” I’m asking myself the same question. If I met John on the street, would I show Christ’s love to him? Yes! He’s friendly and so easy to talk to. If I met Sharon on the street, would I show Christ’s love to her? Yeah – she’s fun and reminds me of my grandmother. If I met Kareem on the street, would I show Christ’s love to him?

Absolutely. He’s my age and has a great heart. If I met Sarah on the street, would I show Christ’s love to her? You better believe it! She is so incredibly sweet.

But what if I met Michael on the street?

Michael is homeless and has congestive heart failure, diabetes, and severe lesions on his legs. Michael fits the stereotype we have developed for the homeless.

Michael hobbled into 884 Chesterfield Road on March 14, clutching his cane with all his might. My initial thought was not positive. He smelled like urine and I knew it would mean a week of struggles for him. Each day his condition seemed to get worse while the Winter Relief Core Team’s love for him grew more and more. He’s one of the more positive and polite people I have ever met, but I didn’t realize that until halfway through the week.

On Sunday morning, March 20, we had to call the ambulance for Michael because he could not stand up; he could not control his bladder. Through tear-filled eyes, we watched him pull away from Bay Area, headed to the hospital.

So now Janet’s question rings through my head: If I met Michael on the street, would I show Christ’s love to him? If I’m honest with myself, I’d have to say I’m not certain I would. It is so much easier to love someone who is sitting in the comfort of our own home (or church).

Michael has such joy-filled eyes that are only visible once you get to know him a bit better. He needs the love of Jesus just like anyone else, but due to my own selfish desire to maintain my personal

comfort, I probably would have passed Michael on the other side of the road.

One of the benefits of serving during Winter Relief is that it removes our ability to discriminate. It removed my ability to pass Michael on the other side of the street. And it put Dave in the same room as Michael. Dave, compelled by compassion and the desire to show the love of Christ, did something for Michael that no one else was compelled to do.

Dave helped Michael take a shower and be clean for the first time in weeks.

It simply took Dave being in the same room as Michael to show him Christ’s love. He looked past the smell and appearance and saw a hope-filled man who needed Christ’s loving embrace.

If you’re like me, you look at these smiling faces pictured and can easily see yourself loving them. Let us continue to love them, but let’s also look deeper into the faces whose smiles are hidden by dirt, pain, sickness and oppression and, compelled and convicted by the love of Christ, give them the loving embrace that Christ gives us.

What will it take for you to look past the outward appearance of the homeless and love them like Jesus loves us?

FINANCIAL UPDATE

We often talk about riding the wave of God’s grace at Bay Area. He is pouring out His grace in countless ways, including the growth and incredible generosity we continue to experience each month. We continually thank God for the generous hearts of our Bay Area family – your faithfulness in giving has not only led us to exceed our operating budget so far this year, but also enabled us to strongly support our global missions partners in South Sudan this past fall.

Each May through July, the elders and staff go through the annual budget process for the fiscal year that begins in September and ends in August of the following year. Despite our best efforts to predict income and expenses, it is challenging to be totally on target for the entire fiscal year. Accordingly, we conduct a mid-year budget evaluation each February and recommend adjustments that reflect actual conditions at that time. This year, the elders approved a $302,000 (7.3 percent) budget increase that took effect March 1.

Several factors led to that adjustment, the greatest of which is an amazing outpouring of generosity from the Bay Area family. Additionally, we’ve witnessed continued double-digit growth in the people who call Bay Area home, and were able to save $40,000 in projected expenses during the first half of this fiscal year.

How do we feel God directing us to use the unexpected funds with which He’s blessed us? We’ve already been able to increase our financial commitments to church planting, global missions, our local outreach partners and our benevolence fund by $35,000 in the first half of this fiscal year. We’re excited to be able to give an additional large donation to the Annapolis Pregnancy Clinic in

continued support of coming alongside women facing unexpected pregnancies.

Through this overflow of generosity, we’re better able to resource our new Easton campus and the work God is doing on the Eastern Shore. In Annapolis, we plan to hire a college coordinator to help reach college students and establish a presence at the community college.

We’ll also launch an internship program designed to train people at Bay Area in arenas such as church planting and missions.

God is enfolding people into our church family through each of us as we invite people to encounter Jesus here, and we’re grateful that He’s entrusted us with the privilege of helping them become and grow as disciples.

Improvements to the audio and video equipment in our auditorium will enhance the worship experience during our gatherings. As a debt-averse church, we’re grateful to be able to apply funds toward eliminating our debt as well.

One of the biggest changes our church family’s generosity has enabled is land acquisition. Recently, Bay Area purchased 3.3 acres to our west for $216,000 at auction. Six months later, we were able to purchase an additional 7.3 acres for approximately the same amount. Both transactions have closed, adding 10.6 acres to the 14.6 acres we already own, bringing our total footprint to 25.2 acres.

We’re grateful to have room to grow at our Annapolis campus!

In the coming months, we plan to add another entrance and exit to our west parking lot to help relieve traffic congestion, and provide additional parking (unpaved initially). We plan on joining the properties, if possible, to our original plat, which would enable us to rethink our master plan for the Annapolis campus. For example, we know that we are going to need more children’s and student ministry space before we build a large auditorium (which has been in our master plan for a future phase of construction; we recently completed Phase II). We’re already at capacity during the 9:15 a.m. gathering in middle school and several age groups in Children’s Ministry.

Bay Area’s heart is to make room for people. God is enfolding people into our church family through each of us as we invite people to encounter Jesus here, and we’re grateful that He’s entrusted us with the privilege of helping them become and grow as disciples. Property acquisition is just the baseline start of more growth for the Kingdom. We’re looking forward to seeing what God will lead us to do with it all.

MELANIE SADERHOLM started out on the BASM team behind the scenes, setting out the coffee every Sunday. She later decided to join BASM as a community group leader for the sixth-grade girls.

BAY AREA Safety Update: Wise as Serpents The Bible clearly instructs us to use our minds and our talents to solve issues, both individually and in the corporate church.

One of the areas in which we put our minds and talents to use is building security.

Bay Area has always been mindful about safety in our Children’s Ministry; early on, Children’s Ministry Director Gail Wiles organized a small group of volunteers who helped monitor the halls and stairwells.

any given month (as is the case for any large church), from domestic disagreements over check-out of kids to strangers that we don’t know acting oddly in the concourse or parking lot; from lost children who have wandered away from their parents on busy Sunday mornings to medical emergencies or assistance in fire evacuation plans. A lot goes into our safety preparation and prevention.

In late 2012, we developed a church-wide safety team. In fact, we have a security summit every six months or so to review Bay Area’s physical security plan and make improvements wherever we can. We leverage people in our body who are gifted in this arena and invite them to join the dialogue regarding our safety strategies.

In addition, we’ve installed improved equipment including radios, cameras and electronic locks to key entrances; and of course, we’ve recruited former security professionals to join our onsite safety teams.

If you run into a problem on a Sunday morning or have a question about safety, look for a member of the Safety Team (they have T-shirts and radios that identify them) as they are equipped to help or find help in all situations.
