Q & A with Jody and Drew

ABOUT THE COVER

If you've been paying attention over the last few months, we've played a video with a bag in different locations. When we surrender our hearts to Jesus, declaring Him Lord and Savior over our lives, we are filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, and He begins to equip us for our lives as disciples, or followers, of Jesus. To represent this, we are using the metaphor of a bag filled with the 9 essentials of discipleship, which you bring with you through all of life – from the beach to your job or even school – because all of life is discipleship to Jesus.

Jeremy Riddle WITHOUT YOU RIDERS

This song is straight scripture. It's about the reality that God's love for ME - a deeply broken sinner - is so unfathomable it leaves me undone and elicits a response of trust and surrender. This song is like taking a deep breath at Jesus' feet.

RIDERS has a California vibey sound so it's easy to jam to, it's really fresh. You'd probably fall in love with the sound before you even realize the lyrics say that everything in life without God is purposeless.

COAT OF MANY COLORS

Brandon Lake WE CROWN YOU

This is the ultimate dance party worship song! Our kids enjoyed this at Kid’s Con, and I can’t stop worshiping to it on my car rides :)

Jeremy Riddle

Such a love song to Jesus. A daily reminder to praise who gave us the ultimate sacrifice.

HOLY FOREVER

Chris Tomlin

This reminds me of one of my favorite chapters in the Bible, Revelation 5, where Jesus the Lamb who was slain appears and all of heaven breaks out in praise. It humbles me to think that we are privileged to join this eternal chorus to sing praises to the Lamb.

Throne Room

Kim WalkerSmith

In this song, I am challenged by the vastness of God's glory and the fullness of His holiness, which humbles me while also provoking me to worship this God who is vast in His glory, yet so very personal and intimate in His care and love for me Mind blown, drop the mic!

This song is a great reminder to let go of the past and embrace the new things God is doing in our lives.

I love this song because it celebrates God's faithfulness and goodness in a joyful and uplifting way.

HART

This song focuses on the majesty of God and is straight up worship in the typical hip-hop vibe that I love. When the hook hits with, “Maker of the stars that is who you are! Healer of our scars!” it just makes me want to throw my hands in the air and belt it out!

This song carried me through the recent death of my Dad. It acknowledges the difficult reality that everyone of us encounters in a world full of suffering and cries out to God, “I need you!” A simple prayer that I find I often need to rely on.

This song is taken from one of my favorite Psalms. When I get off track, this song reminds me of His promises and my identity in these promises. The best form of help that I can receive is the “keeping” help of the Lord.

This song can get stuck on repeat in my head, and I’m grateful for that! It is a great testimony of His incredible, unrelenting pursuit and my dependence on Him. WE WILL KEEP YOU (PSALM 121) Soverign Grace Music HE WILL HOLD ME FAST Shane &

Chris & Paige HEMLER

Why do you feel like it's important to serve/ why do you serve?

Chris: Christ set the ultimate example of service, so if we are working to be more like Him, then I think we ought to find ourselves in service. If we follow the habits and actions that He set for us, then we are putting ourselves in the right spot for spiritual growth. Paige: I believe that everyone has a spiritual gift and that gift should be shared with their church community. Everyone can impact their church in both big and small ways.

Mindy

GALLEGOS

BASM HOSPITALITY

Why do you feel like its important to serve / why do you serve?

It’s important to serve because Jesus came not to be served, but to serve and give His life for us, and we follow His example. I serve out of gratitude to the Lord for loving and saving me, and out of a desire to be a little part of the big work God is doing through BACC.

Emily Cieslinski

How has leading a life group impacted you personally and spiritually?

I have grown in contentment knowing that as a life group leader I am participating with God in His purpose to build His kingdom. Also, God works powerfully to intensify growth through authentic, safe, gracious, committed, purposeful, and loving relationships.

How has serving impacted your own spiritual walk?

Chris: Serving in Children's Ministry reminds me of these fundamental truths: God made you, God loves you, and God gave His Son for you. Paige: Sharing Jesus's love with young minds reminds me of His love during difficult times. Even adults need that reminder.

What would you want someone to know about serving with the Children's Ministry?

Chris: You don't need a degree in education to influence young kids. Actually, I'm convinced that you really just need to show up and love them, spend time with them, hang out with them. Paige: Serving in the Children’s Ministry humbles me; every time we share Bible stories, I gain new insights or perspectives.

How has serving impacted you in your spiritual journey?

Serving has impacted my spiritual journey by challenging me to be more generous with my time and energy and to think of the needs of others, as well as my own.

What would you want someone to know about serving with student ministry?

Serving in student ministry in one word is FUN! It is a joy to see our students eating and laughing together at church in a safe, loving environment.

How has serving globally impacted you personally and spiritually?

Serving on multiple Short-Term Mission teams has been incredible! It has brought us closer in our relationship with Jesus by opening our hearts to the nations and allowed us to see everyone in the world is fundamentally the same.

What new insights, if any, do you have about God or His Kingdom through serving?

The discipleship model God gave us, to multiply through relationships, is slow and works! God called me be a part of it because I seek him and his kingdom, not because I have all the right answers and ideas.

What would you tell someone who has yet to start serving in the church body?

Loving others through serving is never a mistake. It can be a sacrifice, but serving is only ever a blessing to you and others.

What new insights, if any, do you have about God or His Kingdom through serving this way?

We have witnessed first hand that God is working everywhere. Some of these people are in dire conditions in Uganda, India, and South Sudan but are full of joy because of their love for Christ.

What would you tell someone who has never considered serving overseas?

Just go! Jesus will guide you in the process, provide financial support, and be with you every step of the way. It will change your life forever and you will grow more with Jesus!

Mark & Nikki Cerulla

WORSHIP + PRODUCTION

What do you love about serving / what are the benefits of serving on a team at Bay Area?

Mark: When I think of serving, I can’t help but think about what Jesus did for me, leaving everything to come to earth and taking on the form of a servant. When you truly understand that sacrifice and obedience, you can’t help but want to emulate it. Nikki: I love the sense of community and fellowship. Serving allows the opportunity to join with other like-minded believers to be used by God in a unique way.

Bryan & Amy PATRICK

COMMUNITY GROUP LEADERS

What do you love about serving at our Odenton campus?

Serving at Odenton feels like we are pitching in together as a family. As a mobile campus, there are so many small ways to serve that collectively make a big impact.

Why do you feel it's important to serve?

Serving connects us to a more complete picture of who God is when we use our unique gifts collectively for a Kingdom purpose.

Darlene & ML

WEBB

CONNECT TEAM

What do you love about serving / what are the benefits of serving on a team at Bay Area?

Darlene: Serving has been an honor. I feel like I'm working for Jesus, doing what he called me to do. I didn't know the first thing about espresso coffee making, but learned quickly that I love doing it. ML: I like serving because of the interaction with not only people coming to church but I really enjoy getting to know some of the other volunteers and staff members here.

Seth DAVIS

Why do you feel like its important to serve / why do you serve?

We are called to serve is the quick answer. I also find serving is a great way to meet people at Bay Area and I enjoy the fellowship with others while we serve.

How has serving impacted your own spiritual walk?

Mark: When I am not serving, I feel stagnant and unproductive as a follower of Christ. Serving takes sacrifice, but it helps you see people the way Jesus sees people and that is truly rewarding. Nikki: Serving is a natural part of walking with Jesus. Touching other’s lives through worship, prayer and simple community is life-giving and rewarding. I feel blessed to be able to serve and be used of God in whatever way He chooses for me. When I surrender my will to His, my heart is transformed.

How has serving impacted your own spiritual walk?

Darlene: Serving at your home church is very important. Ephesians 2:10 says we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. ML: Serving lets me connect personally, gain Christian advice, and help others who may need my support.

What would you tell someone who has yet to start serving in the church body?

Darlene: It's a good way to meet new people. Being on the connect team has made me feel more like part of the church community. ML: I consider myself an introvert so getting out of the shadows isn't always easy for me, but I've learned that if you want to really feel like part of the church community on a more personal level and use the talents that God has given you to benefit the church body, VOLUNTEER.

How has serving impacted you in your spiritual journey?

It's helped me focus on being humble and living out Jesus's perfect example of humility. I appreciate the opportunity to help set up an environment where perhaps the next day someone might learn about salvation for the first time and accept Jesus as their savior.

What would you want someone to know about serving with the chair team?

We have a fun group that enjoys serving. It's only about a one hour commitment once a month, generally on Saturday mornings. Luis Sanchez is a great leader who structures the schedule based on everyone's availability each month.

CHAIR TEAM

FRANKIE and Following Jesus

I’m a relatively new grandfather. Last November, on my birthday of all days, my oldest daughter gave birth to our first grandchild - a girl named Frances (Frankie) Rose. I couldn’t have been more excited by her birth and and blown away that she and I get to celebrate the same birthday. Crazy.

BYBRIA N HOPPER
ANNAPOLIS
CAMPUS PASTOR

Frankie is now seven months old and she is growing daily. Just two weeks ago, she was sitting upright and leaning over to crawl. Today, she is a sprinter in the area of crawling. In just two weeks, and all of that changed. We see her growth happening right in front of our eyes.

When I think of my granddaughter and the progress she is making in her little life… it’s hard for me not to think about the progress that my daughter has experienced going from an adult to a parent… and for me and my wife going from parents to becoming grandparents!

Look, I know you might get this but, we’re all aging even though we all may not be maturing. And I think herein lies part of the challenge we face as followers of Jesus and our own spiritual growth. Time following Jesus does not equate to being transformed or changed by Jesus. Many can say they have been following Jesus a long time without ever becoming more like Jesus.

This is why we as a church have felt led to encourage everyone to become more like Jesus. To not simply be known as a Christian, but as a disciple.

See, we are all on a spiritual journey. Much like our biological life, this journey has different stages of spiritual maturity. In fact, consider how scripture describes our spiritual lives…

EP h ESIANS 2:1,5

“And you were dead in your trespasses and sins...” “even when we were dead in our transgressions”

joh

N 3:3

Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

1 PETER 2:2

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation.

2 TI moT hy 2:1

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

1 co RINT h IANS 13:11

When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.

1 joh N 2:14

I write to you, fathers because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil.

All throughout Scriptures we see that when the New Testament writers refer to our spiritual growth, they primarily use language that mirrors our own development as humans. I believe they did this (under the power of the Holy Spirit, of course) so that we would have a clear and easily understandable picture of what it means to grow spiritually.

Spiritually, we start off as unborn and become born (again) as infants and babies, and grow to be young adults who become mature adults, and eventually become parents and grandparents.

This is the biblical picture (and expectation) for someone who is following Jesus. In fact, in several of these passages, the Apostle Paul is arguing that certain people are not growing in their faith and instead are infants when they should be adults. This is confounding to Paul! He is saying you are a grown human being - yet you are an infant. That would be the equivalent of me as a grandfather only learning how to walk like my granddaughternow!

So, why is this important? I believe if we understood our core identity as a follower of Jesus to be a disciple over simply being a Christian, we would find ourselves experiencing more of the fullness of life in Jesus.

Would we not agree that all of life is better when it is in communion with Jesus and done the way He designed it to be? Then to the degree that you and I encounter Jesus and become more like Him as a disciple, I believe we will experience the love, peace, joy and fulfillment in life in the here and now.

Disciples are not ones who follow Jesus from afar. Those were the crowds. And the crowds weren’t committed - they were consumers. They just wanted the benefit of being close to Jesus but didn’t want to become like Jesus. And its not much different now than when Jesus walked the earth in bodily form. There are many who follow Jesus from afar, but few who desire to be a disciple.

Disciples are ones who follow Jesus (as in make a commitment to reorient their life around His way of life), who are being changed by Jesus (transformed to become like Him), and on mission with Jesus (both to reach the lost and to make more disciples).

SENIOR SUPERLATIVES

Dear Class of 2024,

Congratulations on graduating high school, we are so proud of you! Our prayer for you as you leave BASM and move on to college, take a gap year, go into the workforce, or join the military is that you would take what you learned and continue to apply it wherever you go. One thing to remember as you move forward is community matters. Whether you stay here at Bay Area or join a new church, wherever you go, find a Christcentered community. A disciple follows Jesus, is being changed by Jesus, and is on mission with Jesus, and that is best done in community with other believers. So our prayer for you is that you will find that community just as you had here in BASM. As one last parting gift from BASM, the senior community group leaders have written each student who regularly attended BASM a senior superlative. Enjoy, please don’t be strangers, stop by the Warehouse anytime. We love you all!

I have lived in the Annapolis area since childhood and have always enjoyed the culture of the area with its rich history and the beauty of living near the Chesapeake. We came to Bay Area back in 1999. I had been praying for a church where I could grow in my relationship with the Lord and learn the Bible, and when a pastor of Bay Area and his family moved into our community, it was clear from my conversations with them that this was the church I had been praying for. We came to visit one Sunday and it has been home ever since.

Fast forward to today, where I serve in the role of Women’s Ministry Director. This is the place where women of all ages and seasons of life come to receive encouragement, fellowship and opportunity to grow in their faith alongside other women. With Bible studies, prayer groups, events large and small, we have a nice balance of opportunities to stretch our faith, pour into others and to grow friendships. As disciples of Jesus, we strive to make Women’s Ministry a place where women are equipped to impact the Kingdom for His glory.

Lately, the Lord has been teaching me about the importance of being in His word daily. I love that His Word is where I find the encouragement I need to remain in his Word! Truly, it is the wellspring of life and I long to be like the tree planted by streams of water as described in Psalm 1:1-3 which says, “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked, or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither- whatever they do prospers.”

My husband and I love sailing together and we make the most of every opportunity the summer provides for us to be on the water. One of my very favorite ways to be with the Lord is early in the morning on the boat, with His Word before me, as the world along the shore awakens. It is so beautiful and quiet, with just the low-flying herons stirring.

When asked what I like to do for fun, I always seem to come up with simple things, such as delving into a good book. But I like being with friends, playing games, exploring museums and cute towns. Although I do not have a green thumb, I enjoy trying to keep plants alive.

I am from the heart of the Midwest, surrounded by corn and cows. I lived in Wisconsin until the end of 7th grade when my family moved to Michigan. I lived in Holland, Michigan, for the rest of my school years while attending Hope College. I then ventured to Maryland in 2017 to pursue graduate studies in "Charm City." I, most recently, served as the Director of Missions & Mobilization at Grace Fellowship Church in Timonium, Maryland – Bay Area’s 1986 planting church. And I am thrilled to be a part of the Bay Area community!

As the new Local Outreach Director, I will strategically expand Bay Area's efforts to reach our neighbors with the Good News about Jesus and oversee our collaboration with our local missions partners.

Over the next year, I look forward to seeking the Lord and his will for Bay Area Community Church's local outreach. I know He has a plan and a strategy for us to make disciples of Jesus where we collectively live, work, play, and learn. Together, through the power of the Spirit, we can make a significant difference in our communities.

REAdERS WhAT you lIKE To do FoR FuN!

I have been enjoying getting into the rhythm of Bay Area's chapter a day. It is incredible to be one church body reading the same passages daily. For my own personal study, I have been reading the book of Acts lately. The Lord has shown me how He led Paul and the other apostles to give different testimonies and gospel presentations depending on the audience and circumstances. Seeing the common elements the apostles shared and how much they varied has been personally rewarding. I had a mentor who said the Good News about Jesus is like manna from heaven. It grows stale if you try to store it up. You have to go and collect it every morning for it to stay fresh and nourishing. Acts has only solidified this for me more and more.

For fun, I enjoy brewing a great cup of coffee. At home, I most often go to my Aeropress as of late. I love to find time to backpack the Appalachian Trail when I can. But in hot weather like this, I much prefer a beach, an umbrella, and a good book. However, my most consuming hobby by far is photography. You will never find me far from a camera.

Summer’s here and it’s time to get your date on! We are challenging you to date your spouse, fiancé, or significant other from July to September with this bingo card. We will award prizes monthly for anyone who is working toward a BINGO, and at the end of September, if you have gotten a BINGO, you will be entered into a random drawing to win the GRAND PRIZE which will be announced at our Fall Date Night on Friday, October 4. In conjunction with the Walk the Walk Foundation, Bay Area Community Church would like to donate 300 backpacks for children living under the poverty line in Anne Arundel County.

Make a $30 donation, fill a backpack, and decorate a postcard for a child in need. Your generosity will truly bless a child by helping them begin the school year prepared.

The Odenton Campus will be in their lobby before and after the gathering on August 4.

Questions: alex.williams@bayareacc.org

The Annapolis Campus will be on the patio before and after the gatherings on either August 11 or 18

20’s & 30’s MINISTRY

Welcome to the BACC Deck!

We are a community aimed toward connecting young professionals to disciple, equip and mobilize young leaders to influence culture.

What do we mean by young professionals? Adults in their 20's and 30's (young) who are in the workforce in some capacity (professionals). That's a wide net, and it's intentional! We feel like everyone this stage of life has a place here. But the best way to see if this community is a fit for you is to come check it out, we'd love to have you.

Here's a general idea of what to expect:

The first Fridays of each month are a casual time for food, games and hanging out.

The third Fridays are a time for fellowship with worship and a short teaching/devotional.

Check out our calendar of events at bayareacc.org/20sand30s
