This year promises to be a productive one for our association. These first few months have been full of valuable meetings and information, including our annual Day at the Capitol, where members joined together to educate the California Legislature on issues important to the health and future of our industry. I expect our upcoming Regional Advisory Committee meetings will also prove beneficial and informational for all who plan to attend.
Keith Atteberry PRESIDENTAs we continue through 2023, Bay Area SMACNA hopes to undertake a number of important objectives for the betterment of our businesses and the industry as a whole:
A renewed focus on education. We’re proud to offer a variety of classes designed to keep our contractors on the cutting edge of innovation and current with all industry standards, regulations and more. This year, we have two Project Management Certificate Program sessions — one in the spring and one in the fall — to help professionals who are new to the sheet metal industry or who have limited experience gain the skills to better execute projects and develop stronger internal and external relationships. We’re also excited to offer new technical courses in the coming months.
Labor management relationship development. Another objective is our association’s desire to focus on regular meetings with our union labor partners, Local 104. Just as Bay Area SMACNA represents you, our contractor members (and workforce employers), Local 104 represents the sheet metal workers. It’s in all our best interests to continue a collaborative relationship that benefits both sides. To that end, we’re in the final stages of producing and publishing an updated collective bargaining agreement.
Recruitment. Finally, the continued strength of our industry lies in the successful recruitment (and retention) of the next generation. We plan to continue to focus our efforts on ways to attract these young professionals who will become our next leaders as Board members, committee members and Trust Fund participants.
The new Bay Area SMACNA Office and Training Room are starting to take shape! Construction has been steadily moving forward these last few months and we’re excited to share the progress with you.
In addition to our new office and training room, we’ll also have just over 4,000 square feet of warehouse space available to rent once construction is complete.
If you or someone you know is interested, email Sean O’Donoghue at sodonoghue@bayareasmacna.org.
When SMACNA members are informed and involved in the legislative process, they become powerful advocates for the issues that directly impact our industry. Learn more about these important legislative and regulatory policy issues during this year’s CEA National Issues Conference!
This year’s speakers include former Congressman Earl Pomeroy, senior counsel at Alston & Bird; and Gordon Hartogensis, 16th Director of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. The event will focus on key issues affecting the union construction industry today.

Growing up with siblings, you often have built-in best friends — and that sibling bond lasts a lifetime. For brothers Manuel, Ramon and Mario DeHaro, that bond extended into a shared interest in the construction industry as adults, which ultimately led to a family-run business.
By the early 2000s, the brothers had already completed their apprenticeships and were pursuing separate careers in various aspects of the industry.
“We were seasoned journeymen before we started our own company,” Ramon said, noting that Manuel was the first to get the entrepreneurial itch.
“I was a tech working for Therma when I decided to further my studies and advance my own education,” Manuel said. “My brothers were also working for similar companies, and we collectively had enough knowledge of the trades to make the jump to running our own business. I started it, and they
were on board and our journey began.”
The brothers started DeHaro Mechanical in 2006 as a premier HVAC specialist serving the entire Bay area. The company has come to be known for superior quality and service and has built its foundation on repeat business from commercial and industrial clients across a variety of markets, including education, manufacturing, data centers, healthcare, labs and more. DeHaro Mechanical’s mission is to help reduce energy consumption by HVAC systems and improve indoor air quality.
“Even though we run the company, we also make sure we’re getting out there on the jobs, making sure everything’s done right,” Manuel said. “A lot of our work is repeat because of those relationships we’ve built and that quality of service. Having knowledge of the field and continuous training makes it easier for us to understand the full systems. We know what it takes to install complete systems.”
The DeHaro team takes pride in providing customers with systems that are tailored to their unique needs. Their services include HVAC design, installation, maintenance, commissioning, energy retrofits, controls and sheet metal design and installation.
A recent project completed by DeHaro Mechanical is the new San Jose BioCube build-out — a leading life sciences incubator housed in a 65,000-square-foot facility. BioCube currently serves a diverse portfolio of companies advancing R&D in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, biomedical technologies, genomics, cleantech and food tech. The DeHaro scope of work for this project included design build fabrication and installation of all lab ventilation, process piping and system controls.
DeHaro has been a proud Bay Area SMACNA member since the company was established nearly 18 years ago.

The Mestek Machinery story began in 1964 when Mestek acquired Peterson Roll Feed Company. It was later merged into Cooper-Weymouth in 1974 and wasn’t until the 1990s that the company made plans to better serve metal forming companies.
Today, the Mestek family of metal forming manufacturing brands includes Lockformer, Iowa Precision, Engel and Roto-Die, bringing together well over 100 years of experience addressing every facet of the duct industry.
“Our job today more so than any other is to produce labor saving solutions for the industry,” said Michael Bailey, Mestek’s Senior Vice President of Sales. “As stewards of mechanical contractors, sheet metal contractors and duct fabricators, we’re continuously coming up with innovative solutions to make those jobs easier.”
A top-of-the-line, “game-changing” product available to contractors that helps minimize duct leakage is the
Pro-Fabriduct Full Coil Line by Iowa Precision. The line leverages footprint, speed and production rates along with tolerances that no other HVAC coil line in the industry today can match.
“Duct leakage is the biggest buzzword in the duct world. This line has so many features that lend itself to less chance of duct leakage,” Bailey said, noting SMACNA developed a resource a few years ago for leakage testing. “We were consistently coming up with 25-30% less chance of duct leakage using this new Fabriduct line.”
As a market leader in HVAC sheet metal equipment and solutions, Mestek operates with a long-term outlook … and that means staying on top of the latest trends.
“Two big trends we’ve been watching recently are prefabrication, which we first saw at a Bay Area contractor’s facility and now it’s being applied all over the country,” Bailey said. “The second is digital transformation. Everything’s going paperless.”
During the pandemic, all industries — including sheet metal

— were forced to adopt digital technologies and solutions to make it through years of global uncertainty. Several Mestek product lines, like Lockformer’s Vulcan Laser-Max laser cutting system and spiral tube formers, offer the benefit of ethernet connectivity to perform remote self-diagnostics.
“We can support those machines from remote locations. We even installed machines online during COVID because we couldn’t visit,” Bailey said. “We had to change our mindset a little bit, and I give my team all the credit in the world. But this is very much a face-to-face industry, and we went back to in-person once COVID restrictions were lifted.”
Bailey, who has built countless valuable relationships with contractors during his 27-year tenure, is proud of his company’s designation as SMACNA National’s first Premier Partner program member in 2014.

The venue for our 2023 Advisory Getaway is the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, nestled along the Sierra Nevada mountains. In addition to the stunning scenery, attendees will take part in informative business sessions to learn how our association works. We’ll discuss the mutual challenges we face as contractors in the Bay Area and explore solutions together with our five Bay Area Advisory Committees.
“The Premier Partner program was introduced to me as a way to meet company owners, to network and to make Mestek Machinery more visible across the entire country,” Bailey said. “It took a couple years to really get relationships going, but it’s been worth its weight in gold in terms of meeting contractors and their families. They’ve met my family too. It makes it so much easier to do business by knowing people on a personal level.”
Bailey and his team love being involved in local SMACNA chapters, like Bay Area. One of his passions, and what keeps him coming to work day after day, is making sure contractors are educated on all the options available to them. That’s why training is so important.
“That’s our job,” he said. “If the contractor doesn’t know more than they did before we got there, we haven’t done our job.”

More than 150 members joined us for our first Chapter Night of 2023 during the San Jose Sharks vs. Chicago Blackhawks hockey game.
The evening started with the first jersey retirement in Sharks’ franchise history for Patrick Marleau’s No. 12 jersey. The emotional ceremony concluded with
Bay Area sports icons Rollie Fingers, Chris Mullin and Barry Bonds joining Marleau on stage.
The game went on to be a close one. The Sharks kept the game tied through the 3rd and into overtime but lost to the Blackhawks during the final shootout, 4 to 3.
Despite the loss, all attendees had a great time networking and enjoying the game.
On February 9, Maxim Consulting Group, LLC, hosted a webinar on the Employee Retention Credit (ERC), part of the COVID stimulus provided by the federal government. The ERC is a refundable tax credit for businesses that continued to pay employees while shut down, or experienced significant declines in gross receipts from March 2020 through December 2021.
Many contractors have passed on the ERC because they believe they do not qualify. Most came to this conclusion because the company revenue did not decline according to the regulations. However, there is a second qualification criteria based on what is known as a “partial suspension.”
If your business was impacted by 10% or more based on government mandated requirements, you may still qualify for substantial credits.
Learn how your company might benefit from this overlooked opportunity! Contact Michael McLin, Managing Director at Maxim Consulting Group, LLC, at 303-688-0503 or michael.mclin@maximconsulting.com.

We’ve kicked off 2023 with a number of meetings discussing topical issues. Recently, Bay Area SMACNA President Keith Atteberry, Executive Vice President Sean O’Donoghue, and SMW Local 104 President and Business Manager Rick Werner have met with key contractor and labor representatives to discuss issues and opportunities to capture more District 1 BT Service work.
Recruiting and retention is a primary concern in the current tough labor market, and many
contractors have current openings they need to fill today and for succession planning.
Subcommittee members agreed to tackle initial objectives, including increasing understanding of and simplifying job classifications, and streamlining the recruitment and assessment of candidates organized into the union for better alignment to existing contractor needs. Other initiatives include looking at the best options to reskill existing BTSM journeypersons on the outof-work list to current BT Service opportunities.
We’re excited to start the year off with the Spring Project Management Certification Program, running February 28 through April 6. This year, we’re pleased to add new speakers to our lineup: Rae Ann Ianniello, Tony Lowe and Mark Napier.
The Bay Area SMACNA Project Management Program is designed for students with a minimum of one year project management experience. It will help students develop skills that will benefit both the company they are working for and their own personal development with improved interpersonal and technical skills.

As a key partner in planning, funding and overseeing the Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 104 and Bay Area Industry Promotion Fund, Bay Area SMACNA contractors have an important role assisting in the direction and impact of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Centers. One way apprentices learn about contractor expectations and the role BAS plays in supporting their development is through interactive contractor presentations.
In the photo above, Jeremy Day, VP Operations from Silicon Valley Mechanical and Santa Clara JATC subcommittee member, presents information and answers questions to effectively onboard 1st year apprentices for on-the-job success.
According to a 2021 study by John Hancock, financial stress and the recent impact of COVID have had a substantial impact on well-being. The study indicated that 72% of workers have experienced moderate to extreme stress in the last six months, and 89% feel it’s important for employers to offer a financial wellness program.
In the high-priced Bay Area, it can be even more challenging to manage personal debt, or save for a home, emergencies or retirement. Additionally, financial stress was amplified during the pandemic, ultimately impacting not only employees, but also the employers’ bottom line through decreased productivity and absenteeism.
The good news? Options are available for Local 104
apprentices and journeyworkers. The Sheet Metal Workers’ Local 104 Northern California Supplemental Pension Plan is a trust overseen by labor and management trustees. As of the end of 2022, there were 9,058 active and retired participants with accounts in the Supplemental Pension Plan. In District 1, participants can contribute between $1-12.50 per hour to the plan, in addition to the mandatory profit-sharing contribution.
For more than a decade, Mammini Company, the plan’s investment consulting firm, has offered virtual and faceto-face educational workshops to assist participants in achieving their financial goals. During 2021 and 2022, several hundred participants attended nine workshops and discussed the financial options available to them through the Supplemental Pension Plan. One of the most popular programs is the pre-retirement workshop, designed for participants (and their spouses) within 10 years of retirement.
72% of workers have experienced moderate to extreme stress in the last six months.
89% of workers feel it’s important for employers to offer a financial wellness program.
Starting in June, second-year apprentices will receive inclass instruction on financial wellness and Supplemental Pension Plan options. According to Scott Wernecke of Mammini Company, younger participants stand to gain important knowledge that can set them up for future success. For example, learning the benefits of early saving and the impact of compound interest on your Supplemental Pension accounts versus spending those same funds on weekly coffee expenditures is eye-opening for many.
9,058 of workers and retirees have accounts in the Supplemental Pension Plan.
Mammini Company is scheduled to provide 10 more programs in 2023. More information will be shared in the second quarter this year.
In addition to leveraging programs for union employees, Bay Area SMACNA employers have worked with associate members Union Retirement Solutions, CliftonLarsonAllen & DFG Advisors to provide both personal and organizational financial guidance.
According to a 2021 study by John Hancock financial stress and the recent impact of COVID have had a substantial impact on well-being.
