PRESIDENT’S REMARKS
The first half of 2022 has come to an end and summer is here! We’re hoping that some of the proposed and/or delayed projects will start to come back online in the near future. With the first half of the year reporting below-average or average hours, we continue to stay optimistic that the second half of the year will pick up. On a positive note, I would like to congratulate Mitch Hoppe for taking on the position as our CAL SMACNA President for 2022-2023. Mitch has been an active member of our BAS Board for many years, and he will serve us all well in Sacramento over the next year.
Rich Buckley PRESIDENT
ribuckley@arbmechanical.com Tel: 415-282-1625
I would like to be the first to welcome our new Board members and our new At-Large members that were just appointed at our recent Area Advisory meeting in June. Please see page 31 for a full recap of the meeting. We’d like to remind everyone of our upcoming Annual Scholarship Trust Golf Tournament. This year’s event will take place on July 18. If you or anyone you know are interested in a potential sponsorship, please contact Vickie at the BAS office. This event will raise much-needed funds to help support some very deserving young adults. In closing, a quick reminder that the 2022 SMACNA Annual Convention will be in Colorado Springs in September. To view event details or to register, visit SMACNA.org. Enjoy your summer — we look forward to seeing you at networking and educational events this season!

REMEMBRANCE | Bill Last
JYOTI GANDHI
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of longtime colleague, William “Bill” Last, Jr. in February.
WELCOME JYOTI TO THE TEAM Program and Event Assistant
Jyoti joins us as our new Program and Event Assistant. A stay-athome mom for much of her career, Jyoti was an active participant in her children’s PTA, where she’s helped organize various educational, social and fundraising events for school. Prior to that, she owned her own flower shop in the heart of San Francisco. “I’m interested to get to know the Bay Area SMACNA board members and contractor members and become familiar with what each of them does,” Jyoti said. “As I continue to learn the ins and outs of this industry, I’m excited to see how some of the more popular, largescale events like the PM Program are run, and look forward gaining more experience and contributing to the team.” A Bay Area native, Jyoti brings extensive knowledge of the area and a fresh perspective that will make her a great resource to our office and member contractors.
REMEMBERING BILL LAST
Bill was a highly regarded attorney in the Bay Area for more than 40 years, and a valued associate member. He founded Last & Faoro as a full-service construction law firm committed to providing quality legal representation and litigation support to contractors, subcontractors, developers, property owners, lenders, businesses, suppliers and design professionals. He was particularly instrumental in contract law. Bill was also recognized throughout his career as a Super Lawyer, a Fellow in the Construction Lawyers Society of America, a mediator and arbitrator on the Arbitration Works panel and a member of several construction trade associations. Bill will be remembered as a dynamic industry leader and a family man to the fullest. His presence will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences go out to his wife, Kathy, and his children and grandchildren.

TECHNOLOGY | Data
MAKING DATA WORK FOR YOU ... NOT AGAINST YOU Every industry stands to benefit from data analytics — and construction is no exception. Every piece of data collected during the lifecycle of each project, from design, to financials, to safety and more, can help you make smarter decisions that will fuel future success.
But without the right tools in place to manage such substantial amounts of data, companies can easily become overwhelmed and lose out on valuable insights. Additionally, “bad” data — defined as inaccurate, incomplete, inaccessible, inconsistent or untimely — can also put companies at a disadvantage.
7 | BAY AREA SMACNA Second Edition 2022
That disadvantage, according to an Autodesk/FMI Corp. study, plays to a tune of $1.8 trillion in global losses throughout the construction industry. It’s also estimated that bad data is responsible for 14% of all construction rework. Additionally, a whopping 95.5% of all data captured goes unused in the engineering and construction industries! The concept of “garbage in/garbage out” is very real. If you don’t have reliable, real-time data from the start, you’ll never be able to streamline your processes or reach improved outcomes.
LEVERAGING DATA THROUGH STRATEGY Companies that utilized big data analytics reported an 8% increase in revenue. Here’s how today’s technology can help you manage data better in your own firm:
1. Go digital. Every project entails literally thousands of data points, from cost information, planning changes, photos and more. Without digital technology, it’s almost impossible to keep track of key data and make informed decisions on issues that may arise. Plus, incorporating digital tools allows automation for real-time processes.
2. Increase training and accessibility. Increase training and accessibility. Your ideal software should be easy to use, centrally organized with a high-level dashboard and employees should be properly trained on how to use it. Software that’s mobile optimized makes business even easier. A study from Dodge Data & analytics, in partnership with B2W Software, found that 74% of survey respondents said mobile technology increases access to data for those who need it. Plus, mobile-based applications improve the ability for teams to communicate and share information.
3. Benefit from better budgeting. Benefit from better budgeting. Innovative technology can collect and store financial information, receipts and other important documentation all in one place. Analytics can help teams map out project timelines and incorporate changes. Data is also a useful tool to predict more accurate cost estimates, labor, equipment and more.
4. Identify safety risks. Wearable technology is gaining traction with contractors and can do things like share photos and videos of sites, alert workers to potential dangers, streamline data collection and more. Analyzing big data can help identify on-the-job safety risks, improving workplace conditions for a more productive and safer workforce.
5. Utilize advanced reporting. Gain meaningful insights from integrated management software. By tracking real-time financials and automatically generating reports, project managers will be able to better identify areas where they can save money and improve profitability on future jobs. You can also track compliance and subcontractor performance, check in on equipment location and deliveries and more with advanced reporting capabilities.
Now that you know the impact data analytics can have on your company, look into the options available to make sure you’re using the best strategies to continue driving your business forward.

MARKETING | Email Strategies
EMAIL MARKETING STRATEGIES TO BOOST YOUR BUSINESS Email marketing can be a valuable tool for your company. It’s a simple, cost-effective way to help generate leads, promote your products and services, bring in revenue, even strengthen relationships with current clients. Plus, a well-crafted email campaign requires less maintenance than other digital strategies, like pay-per-click ads, and will likely stretch your marketing dollars further. According to Statista, there are more than 4 billion daily email users — and that number is expected to climb to 4.6 billion by 2025. OptinMonster reports an unprecedented 99% of email users check their inbox, with some checking up to 20 times per day!
13 | BAY AREA SMACNA Second Edition 2022
Your audience is out there, and they can help you reach your strategic goals. Here are some tips on how to get started.
Generate a list Before you can start sending emails, you have to compile a list. This should include current customers and potential clients already signed up to receive updates from your company. Don’t have a list? Direct online visitors to opt-in when they contact you through your website or leave their email address while attending an in-person event, like a trade show. If you have a blog, offer an enticing call to action that encourages people to subscribe, like “download DIY tips on maintaining your HVAC system this summer.”
Develop content Now that you have your list, you can start thinking about content. What do your customers want to know? This can be exciting company news, new products or services, project summaries, best practices, industry trends and more. Whether you serve the residential, commercial or industrial market, use your email platform to educate end users and provide content relevant to their needs.
Create graphics/videos Your written content is the main reason for your email campaign, but you also need eye-catching supporting visuals to engage your readers. Consider branded images along with charts and infographics when applicable. Using dynamic content and unique videos is proven to garner even more engagement.
Measure results Analyzing your campaign’s measurable data is the next step after you’ve hit send. Just like any other data-driven decision you make in the field or office, watching metrics like open rates and click-through rates will generate meaningful insights as to what resonates with your customers, which will help guide your content and plan of action moving forward.
Email marketing — while fairly easy and economical — takes some time and effort, but the investment is well worth it. In fact, the Litmus 2020 State of Email Survey reported an average return of $36 for every $1 spent on email marketing. If you don’t have the internal manpower to manage your email strategy, enlist the services of a reputable marketing agency to help get the results you’re looking for.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Fasteners Inc. has been affected by supply chain issues and worked to pivot in ways that would allow them to keep up with demand while keeping operations open. “We have a lot of flexibility to build solutions that reflect how our customers like to do business,” Wilson said. “Basically, you can build a partnership portal where you have access to inventory and snapshots of account financials and everything looks like your own brand, but it links into our system. The session was presented by Beth Anne Katz, an award-winning mental health advocate and program manager at Amazon who, in 2021, was named one of the 100 most influential women in Silicon Valley by the Silicon Valley Business Journal.
A virtual session on Inclusive Leadership offered in partnership with the Society of Women Engineers featured JeanAnn Nichols, a leadership expert who offers leadership courses with Stanford Continuing Studies. Her model on leadership with HEART was inspiring to all.

The third annual Golden Gate Park Hike provided new and tenured WIC members a chance to bond over nature trails and the traditional stop for pretzels. It takes a village (of WIC leaders, partners and sponsors), and WIC is so much better for the collective sharing of resources, time and talents! Special thanks go to Antonia Soler-Blasco, Sarah Sullivan and Kelly Britland for their contributions to National WIC week, and of course, to our sponsors.

BAY AREA SMACNA WINS AWARDS AT CAL SMACNA ANNUAL CONVENTION Congratulations to the Bay Area SMACNA winners of several annual awards that were recognized at CAL SMACNA’s 56th Annual Convention in Kauai.
TOM GUILFOY MEMORIAL CRAFTSMANSHIP OF THE YEAR AWARD
along with a creative concepts category to recognize exceptional projects falling outside of the mechanical and architectural categories. The 2022 Tom Guilfoy Craftsmanship award in the Mechanical category was awarded to Southland Industries of Union City for the Bay View Campus project. This winner was chosen due to the project’s complexity, collaboration and craftsmanship. This project also had a great safety record with no injuries over a four-year period.
Created in 2004, this annual award is in memory of Tom Guilfoy, former owner of the historically renowned Guilfoy Cornice Works in San Francisco. This award is for any project where attention to detail and expertise was critical to the project and exemplifies teamwork between sheet metal workers, the contractor, the subcontractor and the owner. This award is presented annually for any type of work in the HVAC, Specialty, Industrial, Kitchen or Architectural fields. Projects are judged on the skill and expertise exhibited to complete the project, regardless of how big or small. There are two main categories: mechanical and architectural,

The entire 1.2 million square feet of occupiable space of this project is served by four large built-in-place AHU’s totaling 650,000 cfm, 100% outside air. It has 783 terminal units (VAVs), 55 fan coil units, 35 exhaust fans, 2,700 linear feet of trench convectors, 500,000 square feet of UFAD and more than 1.5 million pounds of sheet metal installed, which took three years to manufacture in their shop. There is also an “air highway” duct that is 168” X 54”. Most of the ductwork is exposed, which involved weekly time with the architect for layout and routing plans. This project has no natural gas onsite. With 2,224 geothermal piles integrated into the structural piles of the building, totaling 100 miles of piping underground, this project is the largest of its kind in North America and will serve the heating and cooling demands of the campus without an onsite CO2 production.
