ASSOCIATION NEWS | Updates from Rich Buckley

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS

With 2021 coming to a close, we’re excited to see more people returning to work starting the first of the year. This will open the door to new construction projects and allow some of the lagging markets in our area to hopefully fill some much-needed backlog. As we enter the new year, we will continue to stay focused on workforce safety and education by offering more opportunities for in-person training and educational events. Please review the calendar on BayAreaSMACNA.org for all upcoming classes — and if you have a suggestion for a new class, please contact Vickie at the Bay Area SMACNA office.

Rich Buckley PRESIDENT

ribuckley@arbmechanical.com Tel: 415-282-1625

Speaking of the office … we’ll soon be moving to a new location in Pleasanton! We’re fortunate to have the most qualified labor at our disposal who will build a first-class training facility that we’ll all be able to take advantage of for years to come. See page 4 for more details. We’re eager for the completion of the new facility, but we’re just as excited to introduce two new faces on our team. Join me in welcoming Liz Heaney, Marketing and Communications Coordinator, and Vickie Constantinides, Membership and Events Manager. I’m confident these women will prove valuable assets to our team as they work with our members to grow and innovate. I’d also like to thank John Bagot, immediate past president, for his time and service to our association. I look forward to serving the Bay Area SMACNA membership as your new president and working closely with the Board of Directors in support of all members as we continue to restore a sense of normalcy and achieve great success in our businesses and industry.

BAY AREA SMACNA | New Team Members

WELCOME LIZ AND VICKIE TO THE TEAM LIZ HEANEY

Marketing and Communications Coordinator Liz joins us as the new Marketing and Communications Coordinator. Growing up, she got a taste for construction when she worked for her dad’s underground construction business, then shifted gears after school to work in pharmaceuticals for the world’s largest biotech company, Roche. Liz ultimately chose marketing and has worked for a variety of industries, including real estate, supermarkets and wineries. Her strengths include branding and marketing from the ground up, social media and customer service. “My immediate goal for Bay Area is to get all our social media back up and running so we can let our membership know what’s going on and help them be more aware and involved in our training and events and other benefits that are out there for them,” Liz said. When Liz isn’t working, you can find her traveling or attending activities with her family, which includes husband Bob and kids Katie, Grace and Matthew.

VICKIE CONSTANTINIDES Membership and Events Manager

Vickie joins us as our new Membership and Events Manager. An Atlanta transplant who graduated from Georgia State University with a business management degree, Vickie is a high-energy people-person. She’s an experienced event and program manager with proven strengths in building and growing organizations and programs year over year. “I have a drive to be successful in everything I do, so my goal, of course, is to execute events and the educational training that I’ll be doing with success, and then introduce and implement new ideas for improving this organization’s footprint,” Vickie said. A little-known fun fact about Vickie is she used to dance professionally in a Greek folk dance group, which is also how she met her husband Stefan. The couple have since passed the beloved cultural tradition on to their children, Yianni, Paraskevi, Leonida and Katerina.

In September, SMACNA President Angie Simon and SMART President Joe Sellers posted a joint statement strongly encouraging employees and family members to get vaccinated. They reminded everyone that new OHSA rules regulate that all employers with federal contracts and those with 100+ employees must ensure their workforce is fully vaccinated or require unvaccinated employees to produce a weekly negative test before coming to work.

TECHNOLOGY | HVAC Duct Construction Standards

UPDATED HVAC DUCT CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS After thorough analysis, the revisions for SMACNA’s fourth edition HVAC Duct Construction Standards Metal & Flexible is now available to all SMACNA contractors. According to Eli Howard, SMACNA’s executive director of technical services, the manuals, standards and guidelines are periodically reviewed by various committees (but never further than 5-10 years to comply with ANSI requirements), particularly after new technologies and methodologies have emerged. The following is a list of the most significant changes contractors should note from the previous version of the manual:

Although no changes were made to the root tables for rectangular duct, a few inconsistencies were fixed in the tables specifically addressing T25 a/b (TDC/TDF). Corrections included gage, reinforcement size and number of tie rods required. Minor corrections and clarifications were also made to the round tables. “Just like healthcare, life science fell into an essential category. There was work that needed to be done, and it needed to get done with our expertise,” James said. Recently, Murray Company worked with Bionova Scientific, a Bay Area pharmaceutical contract manufacturer, to design and build their facility in the East Bay for commercial-scale production of monoclonal antibodies to its more than 200 clients. The project took Murray Company the better part of a year to complete the state-of-the-art, 36,000-square-foot headquarters — an expansion that also helped generate new jobs within the community. “The project involved single use technology that is the trend for future pharma manufacturing, and we are the Bay Area leaders in this construction,” James said. “You have to have a lot of technical background to do projects for pharmaceutical companies that will ultimately be licensed by the FDA to make products that are injectable or ingestible into the human body.”

Committees are another way to help guide decisions and outputs of the Association. The regional advisory meetings act as a nominating committee for the geographical areas they represent and are generally held in March of each year. Final votes on these and other nominations are tallied at the annual Advisory General Membership meeting in June. Members interested in serving on the board are encouraged to participate in various events and programs to learn more about the organization, meet other board members and network. As one experienced board member has shared, “If you want to get nominated, you have to show up and be known!” In addition to the regional board positions, up to eight board members at large may also be elected. All terms for Board of Directors are for one year. Oftentimes, Advisory Boards will nominate existing board members to extend their term. The executive board’s terms are also for one year; however, they have often elected to rotate their role to ensure stronger successorship, including: Secretary to Treasurer, Treasurer to First Vice President, Vice President to President and Past President.

Two final categories exist to support the work of Bay Area SMACNA, including the appointment to serve as a trustee for one of several labor and management trusts or contributing on special project committees. Trustees on the pension, supplemental pension, health and welfare and training trusts typically serve for several years due to the learning curve and complexity of the role. On the other hand, special assignment committees such as the teams that worked on CAL SMACNA’s Choose Bigger campaign or that planned a JATC open house have a quicker turnaround and generally do not require formal appointments. commitment to affirmative action and increasing equal opportunity in the apprenticeship program. With more than 180 recruiting locations contacted inperson or virtually in the past three years, Funcke and the training program track the location, contacts and results of the program’s recruiting efforts. From high schools to veteran programs, customized presentations are made to target audiences with specific time for Q & A. Pre-apprenticeship programs like Rising Sun Center for Opportunity and the North Bay Trades Introduction Program (TIP) are a few organizations that have provided prepared pre-apprentices who gain exposure to our industry and the trades. As part of our program’s goals to recruit more women, Funcke partners with experienced Local 104 District 1 journeywomen and apprentices, so girls can see themselves as sheet metal workers.

With less than 3% of women in our apprenticeship program, there is still much room to grow. Critical to the success of targeted recruitment is the need for equity and engagement in the shop and field. Oftentimes women or people who are viewed as different can be marginalized on projects, prompting Training CoAdministrator Ben Rivera to state “a need for a culture change” for contractors and field personnel to be more open and encouraging of diverse populations.

With the efforts of Funcke, Local 104 Tradeswomen and the state of California’s strong focus on equity in the sought-after construction trades, the number of women and people of color will continue to rise to be more representative of local demographics.

Labor and management from SMACNA and SMART share the mutual goal of delivering quality workmanship for sheet metal and HVAC applications. But to really work together, leaders from both sides must understand the needs and opportunities of where the construction industry is headed in the coming years. This is where the 2022 Partners in Progress Conference comes in. It’s designed to bring leaders from labor and management together in a collaborative environment where networking and problem-solving takes center stage. This year’s theme is “Building the Future Together,” and keynote speakers include New York Yankees pitcher Jim Abbott and former USS Benfold Commander Mike Abrashoff. Stress management, exercise and mental health and wellness are just a few of the monthly topics for which they offer tools to support healthy behaviors. Kaiser Permanente’s flexible health plans are designed for every business, no matter the size. Whether you’re a mom ’n’ pop shop with one location or have several offices throughout the state, Kaiser Permanente has the solutions you’re looking for with the flexibility your employees want. “Healthcare has always been a fluid industry, but the pandemic acted as a catalyst for an array of changes, particularly in how people receive care on a general basis,” Ciopyk said. “The nation saw the vast majority of in-person care shift to a virtual/telehealth medium. Kaiser Permanente members were in a unique position to adapt easily, as this type of interaction with our physicians has been utilized with high satisfaction for years.” Ciopyk has been part of the Kaiser Permanente team for the past six years but has only recently begun connecting with Bay Area SMACNA members to discuss the value of partnering with a leader in healthcare.

“Kaiser Permanente has worked with SMACNA for far longer than I’ve been here. This connection is unbelievably important because it gives us the ability to provide support to the communities we serve through events like the SMACNA Scholarship Golf Tournament,” Ciopyk said. “This relationship also allows us to have more open conversations directly with those who receive care through us and hear feedback about what we do well and where we should continue to transform.”

the letter and the intent of these laws.

Building upon what must be measured and what should be tracked to grow a bestin-class program, the JATC trustees have adopted annual reporting guidelines on key performance indicators. A sample of these targeted measurements include:

Average cost per student turnout, per year, per facility

Existing and new performance indicators will be presented to the Board of Trustees annually for review and discussion. With the guidance of the JATC leaders, the support of labor and management, and continuously improving processes and systems, program opportunities and successes will be easier to size up and lay out for execution.

APPRENTICES | Livermore Training Center

LIVERMORE APPRENTICESHIP FACILITY PROGRESS The new SMW Local 104 and Bay Area Industry Training Fund Joint Apprenticeship Training Center in Livermore is in the design build phase. Architect FCGA has been working with selected General Contractor, J.M. O’Neill, with Sigmatech Consulting assisting. The Labor/Management Construction Committee meets approximately every six weeks to review progress. It’s anticipated that construction will take approximately 25 weeks after the permits are approved. Part of the design includes an internal structure with varying heights and lift access built to simulate construction project experiences. It is anticipated that this model will present opportunities and challenges for apprentices to navigate as they work on installation and welding problems. New Local 104 East Bay offices will also be relocating to the building, and Local 104 will lease their space through the training trust.

For six weeks this summer, 25 students in the Bay Area and Seattle participated in the Heavy Metal Summer Experience (HMSE) pilot program — a hands-on introduction to plumbing, piping and sheet metal for high school students interested in the building trades. The program was presented in partnership with Bay Area SMACNA, Western Allied Mechanical (WAM), SMACNA Western Washington, Hermanson and Construction for Change. Dreamed up by SMACNA National President and WAM CEO Angie Simon in late 2020, the idea quickly became a reality. She budgeted $30,000 to get the program off the

started with an introduction to safety procedures. Throughout the camp, they learned all aspects of creating a project from start to finish by building a toolbox from sheet metal and a lamp out of copper pipe. A graduation ceremony was held at the conclusion of the experience, and some participants are in the process of joining the apprenticeship program at their respective JATCs. “We’re already beginning to feel successful because we’re seeing their eyes open,” said Anthony Rogers, the plumbing general superintendent at Hermanson. “When they leave us, when they go back home, they’re going to have conversations with relatives who say, ‘Hey, where are you

heading next in your life?’ and they’re able to speak with a confidence to that.” “What’s not to love about this industry?” Simon added. “Besides the fact that it pays really, really well and you go away having no debt like you would in college, you get to build things with your hands, you work as a team and you get to see what you’ve created. It’s incredibly rewarding.” HMSE leaders recruited interested students through local non-profits, like Junior Achievement, Boys and Girls Club and Live in Peace. Not only did targeting those organizations turn up a great crop of dedicated students, but it also helped further SMACNA’s diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives. Simon hopes to grow the program to 20 camps or more next year. To encourage contractors to host students at their facilities, a digital playbook has been created to outline everything from funding to running the program. To get your copy of the playbook, or for details on hosting a HMSE, email hmse@constructionforchange.org.

STRUCTURE COMMITTEE WEIGHS IN ON REMOTE LEARNING The apprenticeship program has reinstated hybrid learning due to the increase of Delta variant COVID-19 cases as of fall. The structure committee, along with Training Administrators Tim Myres and Ben Rivera, have been authorized by the Training Trust to make monthly recommendations on face-to-face or remote/ hybrid learning. This committee of management and labor trustees has reviewed and made timely decisions weighing the benefits and risks of on-site learning. Most recently, classes have been fully remote except when determined to be necessary for hands-on learning in lab environments. Other responsibilities of the structure committee in consultation with the Training Administrators include recommendations on apprenticeship program policies, practices, compliance and communication. Sheri Learmonth, CEO of Marina Mechanical, was appointed to the California Apprenticeship Council (CAC) as an Employer Representative by Governor Newsom and is one of only two women on the 14-member Commission. Sheri is also a member of the Women in Construction steering committee for Bay Area SMACNA and co-lead of the community involvement team.

I have been in construction for my entire career, but in a financial role. Being involved in the CAC having a skilled and trained workforce. We need to continue to promote the skilled trades, and as a woman in construction I want to promote equity in apprenticeship.

Q: A:

What is the CAC responsible for accomplishing in California? Ultimately the CAC is responsible for the welfare of apprentices; making sure they receive the training they require to protect the future of the skilled workforce needed to keep the California economy moving.

Q:

What are challenges or opportunities that union-based JATCs should be aware of?

A:

I think we are all experiencing the challenge of finding good people, but the skilled trades have not been valued as highly as attending college. If we can shift the idea of success, the opportunities are endless. Apprenticeship creates the ability to earn while you learn and ultimately provides a career for those that choose this path.

Q:

What have you seen in recruiting efforts for tradeswomen?

A:

As a member of the WIC Leadership Team for Bay Area SMACNA, I’ve observed more growth in our recruitment and retention of women in the trades.

GROWING AND DEVELOPING FOREMEN Kevin Dougherty explaining leadership styles and a whole lot more

In September, instructor Kevin Dougherty taught a fascinating class to help students establish effective productivity habits and communication and understand the difference between leadership and management. The class was split into two sessions, to better accommodate for COVID safety with 26 students attending on Sept 13, and 18 students on Sept 17. Dougherty taught each session using real world stories to help participants better deal with difficult people and workers in a professional manner.

When participants were asked what the most useful section of the course was, one responded, “Understanding the leadership styles, and how your opposite might be exactly what you need.” According to another participant, using better communication when interacting with others in order to hold everyone more accountable to ensure a more profitable and productive job/company, was the most useful information.

ADVANCED SHEET METAL ESTIMATING

Kevin Dougherty has been speaking to the construction industry for more than 20 years. His dynamic personality engages students and broadens their knowledge. His Advanced Sheet Metal Estimating course in October emphasized learning to think differently about the estimating process and how to approach each opportunity realistically. The biggest takeaway from this class was to ask more questions.

PARTICIPANTS, WHEN ASKED WHAT THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WAS THAT THEY LEARNED, RESPONDED WITH THE FOLLOWING: •

“Ask more questions and know who you’re dealing with.”

“Don’t spin your wheels and be ready to ask questions.”

“Be more selective on choosing which projects to estimate by asking questions and understanding the scope.”
