VIEWPOINT Breaking the infrastructure logjam
I
t seems like a yearly occurrence – the federal budget comes out, and there’s a promise from Ottawa that this year, for real, there will be more money for infrastructure doled out to provinces and municipalities. The Liberals’ 2019 effort was no different when delivered in March; once again, infrastructure was a top priority, and once again it remains to be seen how much of that funding will actually end up with shovels in the ground. Canada has a massive infrastructure deficit as older roads, bridges, water and sewer systems, and other services vital to the operation of our communities and economy near the end of their viable life. A 2016 estimate of Canadian infrastructure suggests that the total value of core municipal infrastructure assets is around $1.1 trillion – and that about onethird of that is in a condition that could be considered fair, poor or very poor. So how much money do we need to put into infrastructure if we’re to slow down that deterioration and ensure our communities keep functioning safely and cleanly? The Federation of Canadian Municipalities estimates that the country has fallen behind by some $123 billion since the 1950s, according to a 2018 CBC report. That’s a lot of crumbling sewer lines and bridges, and while nowhere near the level of our associates south of the border (according to the American Society of Civil Engineers, the U.S. has an infrastructure gap of about $1.5 trillion – yes, trillion), it has the same effect: bad infrastructure means a loss to the economy as a whole. The federal government has begun to attack the problem; its Investing in Canada Plan is starting to gain momentum, though the nearly $100 billion increase in infrastructure spending over several years has proven very slow to get boots on the ground in many areas. “The pace of spending under the Investing in Canada Plan has been slower than originally anticipated,” according to the document. Reasons given suggest delays between construction activity and government receiving claims for payment, or slower prioritization of projects in some jurisdictions. This year’s budget includes a doubling of yearly gas tax funding, adding $2.2 billion to the bottom line for municipalities. The idea is for that money to be put to work quickly – unlike the nearly $20 billion that has been approved for federal financing but that has been stalled to some extent. Municipalities are able to access and spend gas tax funds far quicker than federally-funded projects can get underway. The current Liberal plan would see nearly $190 billion spent on infrastructure improvements over the next ten years. Hopefully, with some fast-tracked funds this year, Canada’s construction industry will be called on to help fill the gaps in our infrastructure sooner than later. COMPACT HYDRAULIC EXCAVATOR Weighing 10,957 pounds (canopy), the TB250-2 provides Takeuchi with a true 5-ton excavator offering that is well suited for a wide range of applications. Features on the excavator include a long arm with integrated thumb mount and a max dig depth of 12 feet 4.8 inches. Takeuchi Fleet Management telematics system or TFM comes standard on the unit. This system allows the owner to view machine vitals, location, utilization, performance and maintenance data remotely and can be instrumental in ensuring machine uptime and availability. NEW MECHANICS BODY, PROPANE SERVICE BODY SERIES
The Telsmith 3244 Portable Plant provides consistent, reliable production, low mobilization costs, and flexibility in a number of processing applications such as producing quarried stone, sand and gravel, and recycling. The 3244 primary jaw plant can be used alone or configured with other mobile plants. The 3244 begins with a 48-inch by 20-foot vibrating grizzly feeder constructed with mild steel pan, 1/2-inch thick AR steel pan liners, 1/4-inch AR side liners, 6-foot straight deck AR steel grizzly bar sections, and heavy-duty coil support springs with pads to support standard duty loader feeds. The vibrating grizzly feeder is powered by a premium electric motor that boasts an efficient 40 horsepower. In addition, the dual-shaft gear-driven vibrating unit offers adjustable counterweights, 140 mm flow through oil lubricated bearings, and grooved drive sheave to achieve maximum performance with minimal downtime. The 3244 offers throughput capacities from 175–265 stph through 325–530 stph.

The new radial-lift RT-65 Posi-Track compact track loader offers maximum serviceability, reliability, productivity and ASV’s patented Posi-Track undercarriage for superior performance. The RT-65 boasts easy serviceability so operators can spend less time maintaining the machine and more time on the job. Its turbocharged 67-horsepower Deutz 2.2-litre diesel engine produces 184 foot-pounds of torque that the drive motors transfer to ASV’s internal-drive sprockets. Internal rollers reduce friction loss in the undercarriage. ASV built the RT-65’s auxiliary hydraulic system to be robust, with 3,300 psi of auxiliary pressure and 22.2-gpm standard flow. The company also offers an optional 27.4-gpm high-flow system. The CTL features a rated operating capacity of 1,925 pounds and a tipping load of 5,500 pounds. Delivering a capacity upgrade over the XR5919, this compact A-Class telehandler has a lift capacity of 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg), a maximum lift height of 19 feet (5.79 m) and a forward reach of 11 feet (3.35 m). It comes equipped as standard with long-life boom rollers, for smooth, chatter-free operation and minimal maintenance, as well as 360-degree visibility from the cab, intuitive operator controls and a boom lift point. Offered with a choice of three cab configurations – open; enclosed; or enclosed with heat and air conditioning – the XR619 can be ordered with either a fixed or a fork positioning carriage, and can be further customized 10

with individual options including LED work lights, a backup camera, and synthetic oil for cold environments. Designed to handle rough terrain, the XR619 is powered by a Deutz 2.9L 74 horsepower Tier 4 Final engine. High grip pneumatic 12.00 by 16.5 tires and a ground clearance of 10.8 inches (274 mm) make easy work of travelling around an uneven jobsite. Weighing just 10,300 pounds (4,672 kg), the Xtreme XR619 delivers a long working life and low total ownership costs thanks to an all steel construction. New fibreglass engine covers provide improved fit and finish and better accessibility for servicing. The XR619 shares the same control system as its fellow Xtreme models, the XR742, XR944, XR1055 and XR1147.

MULTI-TANK UPFIT FOR MEDIUM-DUTY TRUCK BODIES Thunder Creek Equipment has expanded its multi-tank platform of diesel fuel hauling solutions to include a new medium-duty truck body – the Multi-Tank Upfit – that can haul bulk diesel on the road without requiring a CDL or HAZMAT endorsement (depending on local regulations). Each truck is outfitted with eight independent 115-gallon tanks (920-gallon total capacity) that are only connected when a common manifold is opened at the pumping station. “This is the natural evolution of the multi-tank concept, allowing contractors, heavy equipment owners and fuelling services to haul diesel in the platform that makes sense,” said Luke Van Wyk, vice president of sales, Thunder Creek Equipment. The new Multi-Tank Upfit is currently compatible with the Ford F550 chassis (Class 5 – either with or without PTO). Thunder Creek plans on engineering the body for additional Class 5 and Class 6 trucks. The rear utility box of the new design contains the diesel pump and the manifold system. Options include a variety of meters numerous reel options and lengths, a powerful 4-micron filter to ensure greater fuel quality, and colour schemes that match the Thunder Creek line of fuel and service trailers.
The SJ9253 RT is Skyjack’s largest scissor lift to date with a working height of 59 feet (17.98 m) and is the first model in the new full-size rough-terrain range. Skyjack also has plans for an even larger rough terrain scissor lift that would make work at six stories possible, increasing the number of applications these machines could be used for. The SJ9263 RT with a working height of 69 feet (21.03 m) is in its final design phase and is targeted for launch in Q4 2019. These models boast increased working heights, increased capacities, faster function speeds, all along with market’s largest work platform across the range. The new models also feature an enhanced control system maintaining Skyjack’s proven colour-coded and numbered wiring system, while further improving the ease of troubleshooting and integration with the company’s ELEVATE telematics solution.

he impact crusher market in Canada has become stronger as a broader range of applications and product choices generate higher demand across all regions, explained Julie Andras, global marketing & communications, McCloskey International. “This popularity has grown its roots for a number of reasons,” she said. “The mobility and versatility of a tracked HSI (horizontal shaft impactor) have been a large factor, making them very portable with respect to setup and repositioning. Compared to wheeled units, the new breed of track mobile impactors is compact and can fit many configurations when in circuit with other machines. These machines provide high production and can be taken to a site for a few days, weeks, months, or years depending on the need.” Craig Rutherford, technical sales manager, Wirtgen America, commented: “Statistically speaking, the track-mounted machines account for approximately 60 percent of the Canadian impactor market as a whole, and growing. In recent years, we have seen an increase in demand for track mobility in order to lower the costs associated with plant mobilization, to lessen the amount of set up time required to start manufacturing product, and to increase productivity.” Norbert Dieplinger, international business development manager, SBM Mineral Processing GmbH, pointed out that the regional differences in machine type are usually due to the different natural rock/stone deposits, but it’s not just the feed material which drives preference; final products, regulations and requests have to be considered.

Their yearly production of tracked crushers reflects market demand. “We manufacture 80 percent impact, 15 percent jaw crushers and other types, but less than 1 percent are cone crushers. Looking at tracked vs. wheeled, the ratio is 99 percent to 1 percent. In the past couple of years, the trend is clearly towards tracked units and the reasons are manifold, like easier financing, highest utilization, easy transport [and] fast set up at low cost,” Dieplinger said.
Applications and advantages
Daryl Todd, president of Frontline Machinery, a Keestrack dealer in Chilliwack, B.C., explained that impact crushers are used by demolition contractors, civil construction, road builders and aggregate producers. “Impact crushers work particularly well in concrete and asphalt recycling, and are also very effective in a quarry for aggregate,” added Paul King, Ontario sales manager for McCloskey International. “The crusher suits the applications as it does not squeeze material to break it, but rather hits it hard as it enters the chamber and throws it against a wall to assist in fracturing it.” King noted that impact crushers are increasingly used for asphalt recycling which is on the rise across the country as government specifications begin to turn to more sustainable methods of maintaining their infrastructure. “Site work was traditionally dotted with jaw crushers and cones, in primary, secondary and even tertiary crushing combinations. Delivering a 3-inch minus end product with little or no reduction ratio was the standard for asphalt recycling. Once impact crushers appeared on the rip rap scene, reduction dropped to 1
inch and more options for end recycled product became available.” “Horizontal Impactors are the most versatile crushing machines as they handle larger reduction ratios than other types of crushers and can handle some smaller uncrushables, such as rebar, reasonably well. They can work as a primary crusher depending on the feed material size or be put in after a jaw or in a circuit with a screener to crush the oversize,” Andras added. The advantages of an impact crusher are better product in terms of shape and gradation curve, and lower TCO (Total Cost of Ownership), which includes purchase price, service and maintenance cost, operating cost, higher utilization and a higher price for the final products, Dieplinger said. “If the calculation is done correctly, there is seldom a way to beat an impact crusher.” He added: “Tracked impactors are used as primary or secondary crushers and portable skid-mounted impactors are usually used in secondary and tertiary crushing applications.” According to McCloskey dealer Craig Kergen of Tyalta Industries Inc., the applications have shifted considerably in Western Canada, particularly over the past five years. “Municipalities and government are taking a new view on the tipping of material into their waste management and recycling facilities. Clean recycled concrete is enjoying lower or waived fees, and new programs are being engaged to educate people on how to avoid contamination prior to dropping off product.” The resulting material is now considered of such high quality that engineering specs for gravel used in roadbuilding are changing across jobsites. Recycled material, for example 3-inch minus for road spec, is now on the rise

SBM REMAX 500 as it allows more flexibility and offers an alternative where prices are rising for aggregate. Looking forward, Kergen believes that rather than the crushing company paying a fee to drop material, the tables will turn and the same companies will be paid for good quality, clean recycled concrete, and a cost will turn to a profit opportunity. Currently, SBM mobile impact crushers are used in B.C. to crush blasted granite and dolomite; in Alberta and Saskatchewan to crush river gravel, reinforced concrete and asphalt; and in Ontario for recycling applications, among others, Dieplinger said. King noted that impactors are becoming an integral part of roadbuilding in Ontario, both for infrastructure projects like the Highway 407 construction project, and rehabilitation of roads around the province to remedy them after a particularly heavy frost and use of salt over the past winter.
Advances in design
Advancements are continuously being made in this industry to increase plant efficiency, lower operational costs and lessen maintenance and downtime, noted Rutherford. An example he gave is diesel direct electric-drive, which provides excellent fuel economy in order to lower the cost per ton of product while providing ample power to each plant component. “The diesel engine drives the electrical generator and the crusher directly from a fluid coupler,” explained Rutherford. “These electric drives within the plant require less maintenance and can provide better control and protection when compared to hydraulic drive systems. For example, should a conveyor belt become misaligned, the conveyor drive will sense excess power draw; it will then send a fault [signal to] notify the operator before excessive damage occurs to the belt.” All tracked SBM crushers are diesel over electric
or 100 percent electric drive, which provides the cheapest and most flexible way to run a mobile plant compared to any other drive system, Dieplinger said. “If our mobile plant is used in a quarry and they have main power there it can be operated 100 percent electric without running the diesel gen set on the plant.” Todd outlined a number of benefits of hybrid power. These include the ability to power and run multiple machines from a single genset, and when running from the grid there is little maintenance required, which is important as approximately 30 percent of downtime and service costs are associated with engine related issues. In the event of a catastrophic engine failure, a replacement genset can be rented, mitigating additional downtime. Furthermore, electric power can give up to 10 percent higher production in some applications. Zero emission levels can be achieved when running on main electrical grid power. Both crusher and the anti-dust suppression system run while the diesel engine is switched off. When it comes specifically to hybrid tracked equipment, there is the advantage of being truly mobile and yet still be able to take advantage of the benefits of electrical efficiency and reliability, Todd said. The units also offer a smaller footprint, handy for compact sites. Noise is another area where improvements have been made. Noise levels of the Keestrack R3e have been reduced by over 30 percent compared to a standard unit by use of what Todd said is a unique electrical hybrid system. “The diesel engine of the R3e can be switched off and the unit can be run with a noise-suppressed generator set or the main electrical grid. The R3e can also be fitted with a noise reduction rubber lining in the loading area of the hopper, so the noise is suppressed when loading the crusher with an excavator or wheel loader. 1,300 rpm which gives a reduced noise level compared to standard fans, running at 2,000 rpm or more.” Rutherford pointed out that adjustments of the impact crusher’s closed-side settings are quickly and easily made on the new Kleemann ‘Spective’ control panel. “The operator uses the large touch screen control panel, which has become more user friendly and intuitive by design. This results in a more time efficient and safer method as the adjustment no longer requires any tooling or manual labour.” Another improvement is the gap setting adjustment of Kleemann’s impact crusher, a new feature called Zero Point Determination. “This allows the operator to account for wear on the rotor blow bars and recalibrate the machine,” said Rutherford. “This can be done at any time that the operator chooses from the touch screen control panel by bringing the apron and blow bars into contact with one another to ‘zero out’. This process requires no tooling or measurements from the operator and only takes a couple minutes to complete.” Rotor design can also make a difference. “Keestrack’s substantially larger and heavier rotor design (on average 40 percent heavier than similar units in its class), allows for high throughput in aggressive primary crushing applications,” Todd said. He added that by using specialized steel in the frame and components, the transport weight of Keestrack’s R3 impact crusher has dropped by 11 percent. The frame is a very high tensile steel with a strength of St700. The hopper and unit are made of HB450 and HB500 steel. “There is no other compact mobile impactor on the market today that can meet these criteria with such a large crushing chamber and after screen module,” Todd said.
Customization and options
“Impact crushers have also become more versatile, with application specific options and configurations best suited to maximize production,” Andras said. “Crushers can be put to work with an independent prescreen, underpan or full belt discharge conveyor, overband magnet, side discharge dirt conveyor, hopper extensions, dust suppression including water pump, spraybars, and conveyor covers, or wireless control of tracking and feeder. In addition to this there are various blowbar (hammer) material types and arrangements. Adding a recirculating screen allows a machine to produce a sized and screened product on its own and the operator only needs to feed new material and remove the processed material.” Track mounted impact crushers are offered in open-circuit or closed-circuit configurations. Rutherford explained that closed loop circuits consist of an onboard final screen with a built-in recirculation

MCCLOSKEY I34R conveyor and are often best suited for a client with a limited work area or footprint available. “The onboard final screen is capable of producing high quality product without the need for extra downstream equipment such as screening plants or conveyors. The final screen can easily be removed for added versatility should the client wish to reconfigure their plant as an open circuit.” Rutherford added that the top deck of the independent double deck prescreen can be fitted with either grizzly bars or perforated plate dependent on the size of desired products. The prescreen bottom deck can make a spec product with the use of the side discharge conveyor or have the material bypass the crusher and discharge via the main discharge conveyor. “There is a variety of blow bar metallurgies to choose from in order to ensure you get the most production available from wear components dependent on the application,” explained Rutherford. “Martensitic with ceramic inserts offer a wide range of applications whereas chrome or chrome/ceramic can offer longer life of the wear component in higher abrasive applications with a clean feed free of metal. “An air knife can be a valuable tool added to a machine when you have debris in your feed material that is required to be removed from the final product such as garbage, plastics and vegetation. This will reduce or eliminate the need to have a workforce on a pick-
ing station and can increase throughput of the plant.” Todd pointed out several features available for Keestrack impact crushers. “The Keestrack Neodym overbelt magnet effectively removes metal debris while offering a lighter weight material separation solution compared to others in the market,” he said. “For example, the weight of the Neodym magnet on the R6 is approximately 1,200 kg, roughly 400 kg lighter than the conventional ferrite model, thereby significantly lowering the transport weight of the entire machine. The magnetic force is around 300 percent more powerful as well.” Todd added that their windsifter is designed to remove contaminants such as plastic and wood by means of air flow. “The adjustable outlet angle (by means of the remote control) and the variable air flow enable the Keestrack wind-sifter to be set perfectly to the degree of contamination and material type. This can result in a cleaner and more valuable end product.” Keestrack also offers an optional, automated dust suppression system. When the crusher is running, a signal to the anti-dust control system activates the dust suppression cannon. For instance, with the R3, a fine mist water droplet system generates droplets of <50 microns in size and uses around 45 litres of water per minute. The high velocity air fan ensures a perfect throw to enclose the dust particles and cause them to fall.

“Operating costs are always a consideration and while there are no complex mechanisms or castings like other types of crushers, the entire inside of the impact chamber is subject to abrasive wear,” said Andras. “Liners and blowbars need to be inspected and rotated or replaced to maintain crushing efficiency and prevent the abrasive wear from reaching the main structure. While no machine can be the best at processing every type and size of material, portable tracked horizontal shaft impactors are the closest one can get to this and are extremely versatile. “Making maximum use of available power from fuel efficient and clean Tier 4 diesel engines, coupled with automated controls, ensure that machines are able to work in the most efficient range and allows maximum fuel efficiency and lowest operating costs per ton,” she added. Rutherford offered a list of questions that a buyer should consider. • How often do you anticipate moving from location to location? This can sometimes justify a particular model of machine for transport purposes if you relocate often and have smaller jobs to complete or if you will be working from one main location. • Do you have the necessary infrastructure needed to run a plant on electric line power or will you require the on-board power from the diesel engine? • How much production is required of a particular product? In many cases a producer may have the need for multiple saleable products. However, there is usually only one or two main products which make up the majority of their demand and profitability. It is important to consider this when configuring a machine so that all of the client’s priorities are being met. Andras added: “No matter what the application, versatility and mobility are key considerations for purchasing an impactor, particularly for on-site crushing, and multiple job sites or quarries. Reduction size will also dictate choice, as with any crusher purchase. “The continued growth in the impact crusher market will be driven by everything that is important to the customer – high production, high quality and lower operating costs. Impact crushers can deliver all three.” HEG

TODAY’S TECHNOLOGY BOOSTS COLD MILLING PRODUCTIVITY By Tom Chastain
A
sphalt milling, asphalt grinding and asphalt planing describe the same process by which weathered, oxidized asphalt pavement is removed from a driving surface in varying depths, as specified, done in advance of a fresh asphalt overlay or pavement preservation treatment. There are powerful environmental advantages to asphalt milling. The product of asphalt milling – reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) – is removed and stockpiled, prior to processing into engineered aggregates that are specified for future asphalt mixes. Instead of sending the RAP to the landfill – as was the case a few decades earlier – reuse of RAP utilizes existing aggregates that have already been surveyed, acquired, permitted, shot, crushed, screened and stockpiled. Use of RAP preserves virgin ag-

gregates for more critical applications, conserving quarry reserves. RAP also contains residual asphalt which substitutes for virgin asphalt binder in varying amounts, also saving natural resources. Costs to taxpayers are reduced while natural resources are conserved. Not too long ago, the milling process was considered a necessary evil, in which the paving contractor was forced to mill from time to time to correct a curb line, or scarify a bridge deck. In the 1970s, asphalt mills were simply drums mounted on motor graders. The first dedicated milling machine in the United States was developed in 1974. It was derived from a rear load dirt trimmer that had a conical tooth drum installed in lieu of a spade tooth drum, to cut both concrete and asphalt. In Europe "hot" milling was started in the early 1970s by Wirtgen GmbH, in which asphalt was preheated ahead of the milling process. Then, after pre-

heating, the milling machine would cut the softened, heated asphalt. In the mid-1970s, Wirtgen began the transition to cold milling, and in 1978 adapted carbide tools for mining to cold milling, which launched the modern era. In 1979 the Wirtgen 2200 C on three tracks was introduced, followed in 1980 by the 2600 C, the first track-mounted large cold milling machine with a milling width of up to 2.6 metres, or 8.5 feet. In 1984 the 2000 VC was introduced, the first cold milling machine with front-loading conveyor. A machine that would cut 50 mm (2 inches) in the 1980s at 9 metres per minute (30 fpm) has been replaced by one that can cut up to, and over, 30.5 metres per minute (100 fpm) today. Thirty years ago, you would mill for an hour or two, then have to work on the machine for an hour. Today’s machines are much more reliable, and downtime is minimal. Early-on cold mills were equipped with hydraulic sensors. Although those systems were very reliable, today’s milling – with its need to establish a super-smooth substrate for supersmooth HMA pavements – requires a more sophisticated system. Today you can read out dual grade, grade-andslope, stringline sensing, averaging, laser-reference, and GPS coordinates. One ground man could easily control the grade from either side of the machine, compared to always having two ground men in the past. Today, contractors seek versatility of machine application to leverage productivity and profitability. Added machine flexibility and utilization means more dollars and higher profits. The most significant technology advance has been the new ability to use one machine for multiple applications. For example, today you can buy a machine on which a contractor can quickly change cutter patterns, from perhaps a 16 mm (5/8-inch) spacing to
a 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) spacing to fit particular jobsite requirements. You can also fit smaller cutter widths into the same unit to cut a smaller-width cut instead of having to acquire or rent a whole new machine to do that width.
Tips for productive milling
The right machine is essential to a profitable milling project, but there are other elements of a project that will boost productivity. Here are a few of my observations: • Keep crew and cold mill together. It’s important that an owner keep his crew with a machine as long as he can. It’s not a good idea to send the crew back to the union hall at the end of the year, and get a new operator and crew the next year that has to be trained all over again on that machine. When crews stay on a machine month after month, year after year, they understand it, they know what to do on the machine to keep it up and running, they have memory and records of any issues or problems with the machine. Having new crews all the time is not good for a milling operation. The best crews are those that have been with the machine for the life of the machine. • Truck management. Beyond the cold mill itself, effective truck management will boost productivity of a milling operation. Operators need to be smart when it comes to managing trucks. Today’s machines have high productivity, and if you don’t have the right number of trucks for that that machine to feed and keep it running steady, you will be inefficient. The milling operation should actually mill and load trucks at least 40 to 45 minutes out of the hour. Therefore the operator needs to balance the trucks, pace himself a bit, and keep the machine running steady. That’s instead of running the machine wide open, then waiting 15 to 30 minutes for trucks to return.
It makes no difference if the trucks are owned by the milling company, or provided by the prime contractor. Instead it’s a communications issue. The operator needs to meet and communicate with the prime contractor, giving him an idea of how productive his cold mill is, and based on that, weigh out the number of trucks that will be needed. • Consistency of speed is also important. The more consistent a machine’s speed, the better off the operator will be. It doesn’t make sense to run at full speed, slow down and stop, change trucks, and run at full speed again. That changes the milling pattern significantly; you are better off running at a slower, more consistent speed, as it will result in a lot more precise pattern or texture of cut, and that will benefit the paving operation. • Water on the fly. Another way of keeping the machine moving is adding water, used to cool the drum and suppress dust, “on-the-fly,” without stopping. While the mill moves forward, a water truck moves parallel with the machine, filling its water tank.
Better cutting tools
Wirtgen’s market position in cold milling machines is based on its core competence in cutting technology. This covers everything from low-wear cutting tools and the various toolholder systems, all the way to complete milling drums of diverse designs. All components are specifically tailored to fit the milling machine in which they are used. In addition to the comprehensive range of standard and optional milling drums, Wirtgen offers its customers the design and manufacture of special, customized milling drums. One example is the new PCD milling tools introduced at World of Asphalt 2019. PCD (polycrystalline diamond) is a highly sophisticated, synthetically manufactured, strong mass of carbon and carbide. The PCD tip consists of differing layers: a concentrate of diamond particles in the upper layer, the interlayers and a tungsten carbide substrate. PCD cutting tools are particularly suitable for surface layer rehabilitation thanks to their up-to-date tool geometry and material. The very slight lengthwise wear ensures optimum evenness over the milled surface and consistently high machine feed. Depending on the application, PCD milling tools are a useful addition to the existing pick range featuring conventional carbide tips. Wirtgen FCS light (Flexible Cutter System) allows for the rapid, easy exchange of same-width milling drums, typically in less than two hours. One machine can be used for a broad range of applications with minimal downtime when exchanging drums. Wirtgen FCS light flexibility is uniquely suited for PCD tool technology as conventional carbide tools may be more economical for some applications while PCD tools may be more

Wirtgen FCS light provides opportunity for contractors to have the best of both worlds in one machine.
Machines that perform
Beyond the cutting tools, other advanced milling technologies are organic to the machine itself. Via new microprocessor-controlled enhancements to machine control systems, Wirtgen's WIDRIVE machine management system handles many tasks for the operator in automatic process chains, making it easy to learn how to operate and control Wirtgen mills. On some mills an optional camera system with two or six cameras is also available to monitor up to six working areas, like the rear of the machine or view into truck hopper, on the control display. A built-in tonnage calculator is available. Wirtgen mills incorporate the Level Pro and Level Pro Plus system, Wirtgen’s existing automatic leveling system which is highly user-friendly – designed for the milling crew – and regulates the pre-set milling depth and actual readout electronically. Those leveling systems are instrumental in Wirtgen's exclusive Parallel-to-Surface (PTS) system, which provides precise compliance with working depth, automatically aligning equipped mills parallel to the road surface, ensuring simple, accurate operation of the machine in demanding profiling jobs. PTS also assists the operator in positioning the machine in the milled cut to initiate the milling process. In automatic mode, the system takes care of all the steps that the operator would otherwise need to select manually, one after another.
With PTS, the operator activates the leveling system at the flick of a switch, and all four crawler track units of the large milling machine are lowered simultaneously at high speed. When the milling drum unit reaches the surface to be milled, the lowering speed is reduced and the milling drum slowly penetrates the material down to the set depth. The automatic process helps to prevent excessive cutting tool wear or even tool failure when milling starts. Level Pro and Level Pro Plus also are integral to Wirtgen's Intelligent Speed Control system, which incorporates an electronic flow divider that makes the four tracks work in harmony when turning a radius, making for a smoother cut via electronic track control. The “wasp waist” frame of these cold mills puts the operator in a safe position, with an excellent line of sight to the machine cut edge. This design narrows the machine’s midsection at the critical viewing area on both the left and right sides. Other innovations include sophisticated joystick steering, and LED indicators for communicating with truck drivers.
Managing fuel consumption
Today, three selectable drum speeds allow the operator to apply the maximum productive effort and reduce tooth consumption at the same time. Engine rpm varies with machine application loads to reduce fuel consumption. Extra-wide drum widths are available; the W 250i can cut at widths from 2200 mm (7.2 feet) for conventional milling to 4400 mm (14.4 feet) for full-lane milling. The W 210i and W 250i Dual Motor Concept is the ultimate in “more power, less fuel” technology. The operator can select between one motor and

This can give up to 18 to 20 percent savings in annual fuel consumption. For decades, fuel costs have driven innovations in cold mills. Today manufacturers are working on ways to get more power with less fuel. Use of tomorrow’s machines will result in a cleaner application than in the past. EFFICIENCY AND QUALITY MARK BOMAG’S RETURN TO COMMERCIAL PAVING By Lee Toop, Associate Editor
W
orld of Asphalt 2019 brought with it a return to the North American commercial paving market for BOMAG Americas. The company made a big splash with the launch of the BF 300 C-2 track paver on this side of the Atlantic; the six-foot paver has been popular in the European market and buyers here will now get the opportunity to see why. According to Henry Polk, BOMAG product manager, pavers and mills, the BF 300 models have been working on European and worldwide jobs for the past eight years, and the time has come to take advantage of the North American market’s broad need for paving equipment again. “There’s a huge market there, and there’s a lot of business to go around, so we’re going to tap into that,” he said. The BF 300 C-2 displayed at World of Asphalt is designed for commercial contractors, with a wide range of hydraulically variable paving widths from 5.6 to 11.2 feet. It works with BOMAG screed extensions that are available in 13.8- and 19.7-inch widths; the screeds use Quick Coupling technology that uses a wedge-and-socket design with a locking handle to offer extended paving widths out to 16.4 feet. Or, if the user wants to go the other way, reduction skids can allow for 2.3-foot paving widths. Needless to say, the unit is flexible for many jobs, which has been popular with the European buyers. “I think the European market has done well, number one, because of the BOMAG name and quality and the durability that comes along with the BOMAG name worldwide,” Polk said. “But it also fits the market in the European streets – they seem to be a lot narrower and the BF 300 has been very successful there.” Buyers have also appreciated some unique features that BOMAG has built into the BF 300, most notably the SIDEVIEW system that allows the operator much more visibility. “The entire platform shifts left and right, and the 20

operator’s seat is independent inside that basket. The visibility is unmatched,” Polk described. “Smaller commercial pavers, when they’re pushing a large dump truck, the operator can’t see the dump truck driver or may have other problems. So, with SIDEVIEW, you slide the platform out over the side, beyond the centre of the paver, and that gives the operator direct line of sight with the truck driver in his rear view mirror. It also gives an unobstructed view into the hopper. That feature has proven popular with customers who have seen the paver so far, Polk noted. “When I started demoing this machine back in October of last year, that was one of the things the contractor wanted to see, and quite honestly, I wanted to see it myself. The very first contractor who tried that machine was very impressed that he could see the truck driver and see down into the hopper – it’s beneficial for production and safety.”
Heating system cuts fuel costs and time
Another feature on the BF 300 pavers is the MAGMALIFE heating technology, which can heat screed plates to paving temperatures in approximately 20 minutes. “MAGMALIFE is an aluminum plate... inside the plate is a series of electric heater cores. Those heat up – aluminum heats rapidly and distributes the heat rapidly and evenly,” Polk described. “Those plates are bolted to the screed bottom so that heat is transferred to the screed bottom more evenly and quickly.” That faster heating time cuts down on fuel costs for contractors, means less time spent waiting for the screed to heat, and ensures that the screed bottom has an even heat signature. In addition, a Load Control System helps operators ensure greater mat quality through several features. A screed assist provides operators the opportunity to fine tune mat texture and quality, depending on the mix design. Screed lock also provides a way to reduce bumps in asphalt mats, Polk described. “When the operator comes to neutral, the screed locks in place, which keeps it from sinking in the mix...
when the machine is put back into gear, there’s an adjustable timer that will keep the screed locked in place for up to five seconds,” he explained. “If the machine is waiting for a truck, it could be waiting 30 minutes, and during that time the head of material on the screed face cools off and turns hard. A conventional screed has no other option but to climb that cold head, and that gives us the bump we’re all used to feeling or seeing. With this system it’s locked so it pulls and shears the cold head off, and then it starts to float.” The BF 300 C-2 features a 10-ton hopper capacity, allowing for extended paving intervals between asphalt deliveries. It also features a hydraulically folding front hopper gate, in addition to individually controlled hopper wings that clear asphalt from the hopper. Left and right independently controlled slat conveyor assemblies channel material to the spread augers. Adding to the paver’s cost-effectiveness, the machine is powered by a 74-hp diesel engine, requiring no diesel particulate filter or diesel exhaust fluid to meet Tier 4 Final emissions. BOMAG offers ECONOMODE active engine and hydraulics management to reduce fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. Power for heating the screed comes from a 24-kW 240-V generator belt-driven from the engine. Polk expects that contractors working on a range of projects will be interested in using the BF 300 C-2. “We’re going to see it on parking lots, residential streets, city streets, maybe shoulder work on mainline jobs. Because it’s a six- to 12-foot, it fits ideally for golf cart paths, running paths, and I’m quite sure municipalities, public works departments and road crews will see a benefit out of this machine,” he said. “It’s not over width, it’s light enough to basically haul on a flatbed trailer, even with a roller in combination.” The machine’s debut at World of Asphalt was very well received, Polk said. “It was a great success – there was a lot of interest in it, and it has been well-received on the demo tour as well. Some customers have actually insisted that we sell it to them right then and there and they’re willing to keep it,” he said. HEG

quipped with an EPA Tier 4 Final certified emissions regulations-compliant engine, the new GD655-7 motor grader from Komatsu will be sold concurrently with the current GD655-6 model to offer customers additional choices to meet their needs. “The GD655-7 provides operators with an all new, ergonomic working environment and the new spacious cab allows more room for operators working long days,” said Bruce Boebel, senior product manager, Komatsu America. “Operators will appreciate the new low-effort equipment and steering levers, new transmission controls and articulation stop-at-centre feature. Collectively, they significantly reduce operator fatigue,” Boebel said.
Cab and control upgrades
A number of enhancements have been made on the GD655-7, starting right from the operator’s hands. A new, slightly smaller but “right-sized” steering wheel is designed to provide more visibility and give the operator more room in the cab – a convenient addition for long roading sessions with the blade up. A new steering lever allows the operator to keep their hands on the low-effort, work equipment levers and make small steering adjustments, while operating without needing to turn the steering wheel. New multi-position adjustable arm rests and LH/ RH consoles have power raise/lower and mechanical fore/aft adjustments to precisely adjust to operator preferences. A new stop-at-centre articulation feature simplifies operation. A new high-capacity air-suspension seat reduces in-cab vibrations, and an operator presence 24

monitoring system alerts the operator if they leave the seat before the controls are properly locked out. Under the hood, the grader’s power comes from the 218-hp EPA Tier 4 Final-certified SAA6D107E-3 engine. Komatsu’s two-mode, three-stage Variable Horsepower Control (VHPC) allows the selection of the appropriate mode, economy or power, to match operating parameters to application requirements for optimal fuel savings. The Komatsu Diesel Particulate Filter (KDPF) and other aftertreatment components are designed to work in conjunction with the engine for efficiency and long life. More than 98 percent of KDPF regeneration is performed passively, with no action required of the operator and no interference with machine operation. Improvements to the power train include a new transmission shift lever with finger-operated forward-neutral-reverse switch; this simplifies operation and dramatically reduces required hand movement. Komatsu’s power shift transmission, designed and built specifically for Komatsu graders, provides onthe-go, full power shifting, as well as inching capability and automatic shifting in the higher ranges.
Dual-mode transmission adds benefits
A dual-mode transmission (eight forward, four reverse) allows operators to benefit from the high travel speeds and reduced fuel consumption of a direct drive, as well as the increased tractive effort and control of a torque converter. An inching pedal gives the operator precise control of machine movement. A full locking differential provides the traction required in the most severe operating conditions The pioneering KOMTRAX system and monitor
provides machine metrics, including KDPF status and DEF-level data, fuel consumption, plus performance information collected and sorted by operator ID. The GD655-7 comes with a wide range of standard features. It is grade control and Topcon 3D-MC plugand-play ready with no aftermarket valve required. Two five-section hydraulic control valves are standard, enabling the addition of attachments, and are strategically located to improve forward visibility. The closed-centre Load Sensing (CLSS) hydraulic system, with variable displacement pump, supplies flow and pressure only when required, resulting in less heat and lower fuel consumption. Blade lift accumulators absorb shocks when the moldboard hits immovable objects. The grader features a circle slip clutch for accidental contact with hidden objects with the moldboard. Greaseless circle wear plates ensure long life. The grader is equipped with a seven-inch full-colour high-resolution monitor with Ecology Guidance, and also has a separate full-colour rearview monitoring system. Komatsu has designed the GD655-7 with serviceability in mind. A reversible, variable speed hydraulic fan blows out dust accumulation in the cooler. The machine is equipped with completely sealed and adjustment-free hydraulically actuated wet disc brakes. Fuel and DEF fills are accessible from ground level, as are engine fills and drains. All Komatsu GD655-7 units come with Komatsu CARE. Komatsu CARE provides scheduled factory maintenance for the first 2,000 hours or three years including a 50-point inspection at each service, and two complimentary KDPF exchanges in the first five years.

LOADER UPDATES INCLUDE LOWER OPERATING COSTS AND IMPROVED OPERATOR COMFORT 2019 updates for Cat M Series Medium Wheel Loaders (950M – 982M) include technology advances that provide: lower operating costs via extended service intervals; enhanced operator comfort with new seats and suspensions; added machine configurations; expanded productivity measurement tools; remote software update capability; and more. U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V models save maintenance costs by extending engine oil, engine oil filter and hydraulic oil filter change intervals from 500 hours up to 1,000 hours. Based on estimated comparisons of total engine and hydraulic fluids, filters, and sampling costs during a 6,000-hour period, costs can be potentially reduced by 16 to 23 percent. In addition, several fuel and engine oil filters are being converted from spin-on to cartridge-type. Benefits of cartridge-type filters include fewer parts to replace at servicing (housing is retained), easier disposal of used elements, and less costly replacement parts. The “next generation” of seats and suspensions offers three trim levels – comfort, deluxe, and premium plus – and feature high-visibility, seat-adjustment controls, as well as ride stiffness adjustments. A new “breakthrough” suspension for deluxe and premium plus trim levels increases dampening at the top and bottom of seat travel. The ride stiffness of the seat suspension is adjustable to different settings, allowing operators to tailor seat dampening to individual preferences. The Cat Advanced Productivity application is a web-based tool used to visualize machine production-related data and complements Cat PAYLOAD, Cat Production Measurement 2.0. The tool is accessed from VisionLink and includes a user-customizable report dashboard, cycle-by-cycle downloadable data, and a list of features for truck and material identification lists. Remote flash support allows the dealer to push software update files to the customer’s machine and authorizes the user to initiate installation via the dealer service portal. New configurations in the medium wheel loader lineup include the 982M High Lift, which increases dump clearance under the bucket pin from 15 feet 6 inches, to 16 feet 10 inches (4,743 to 5,143 mm). Configuration changes from the standard 982M include a new lift arm, new tilt cylinder, new tilt link, and the counterweight from the 982M Aggregate Handler.

I
t’s not uncommon to see compact loaders and compact excavators in a contractor’s equipment fleet. As utility products become more versatile with the addition of attachment capabilities, an increasing number of contractors are taking a second look at these machines to increase their jobsite productivity.
User-friendly
Utility products have long been popular machines for people in many different market segments. They are an ideal machine to transport people, tools and materials. A big part of utility products’ appeal is that they’re user-friendly. Automotive features such as a steering wheel, foot accelerator and foot brake make it an easy transition for just about anyone to operate a utility vehicle. And when compared to ATVs, utility products – like utility vehicles – are able to carry and tow more weight. For example, the average two-passenger utility vehicle weighs just over 1,600 pounds and can carry up to 1,250 pounds of cargo while travelling up to 35 mph. To help satisfy customers’ demands, manufacturers have intro-
duced several varieties of utility products. Contractors can choose from 4x4 two-passenger utility vehicles or 4x4 four- and six-passenger utility vehicles. Multi-passenger utility vehicles could be used as a compact alternative to larger pickup trucks on jobsites. In addition to utility vehicles, there’s also a utility work machine option for contractors. These machines are ideal for contractors who need all the functionality of a utility vehicle, but more muscle and power. A utility work machine is larger than a utility vehicle, weighing a little less than 6,000 pounds, and it has a cargo capacity between 1,500 to 4,200 pounds. A utility work machine can also do more with the utilization of more than 40 front-mounted attachments. Utility work machines provide exceptional maneuverability for contractors working in confined areas. With the press of a button, operators can switch from front-wheel steer into allwheel steer mode. Four steerable axles provide a tighter turning radius of 17.5 feet, which is better than a compact tractor, utility vehicle or pickup truck. All-wheel steer also minimizes tire wear while working on asphalt or con-
crete, and it protects sensitive surfaces such as grass or turf. If you’re a contractor who already owns a utility vehicle, it’s not hard to transform it into your jobsite’s new workhorse. Different drive modes help operators best match the conditions to the vehicle. There are also several winch-accessory and front- or rear-receiver hitch kits available on the market for utility vehicles. These kits make it relatively easy for owners to connect push-, pull- and lift-type attachments. For construction, two main attachments are buckets and pallet forks. Other popular ones are a snow blade and mower, says Chris Austinson, utility vehicle and utility work machine product specialist for Bobcat Company.
Attachments add versatility
So how do you know if utility vehicle and utility work machine attachments are right for you? And if they are, how do you decide which attachments to purchase? First, Austinson suggests that contractors deter28

mine how they’ll use their utility products and the types of jobs they want it to take on. As with any equipment purchase, the efficiency or productivity that the attachment provides should outweigh its cost. For many contractors who place an attachment on their utility product for the first time, safety becomes an even greater concern. Austinson advises utility product owners to always be aware of what’s around them when operating the machine with an attachment. And as always, they should wear their seat belts and familiarize themselves with vehicle and attachment owner’s manuals. In the coming years, Austinson says people shouldn’t be surprised if they see more upgrades to utility products. As customers demand more power and versatility from what was once known as a “recreational” vehicle, manufacturers will answer the call. They may never take the place of a compact utility loader or skid-steer loader but gone are the days when they were only expected to transport people and things.

acker Neuson has added two new compact excavators that the company says are built for operator comfort, stability, power and serviceability. The 3.6-ton EZ36, and 2.6-ton EZ26 compact excavators both feature a minimal tail swing design and are versatile for a variety of applications. According to Wacker Neuson, the 3.6-ton-class excavator is one of the most popular sizes in the market. The company has focused on features and benefits that would stand out in the crowded field. The EZ36 combines the technology and operator comfort of a larger machine in a powerful, yet economical package. Wacker Neuson says that it has bestin-class dig depth (11 feet 6 inches) and reach (18 feet 6 inches). The EZ36 is highly productive with excellent maneuverability and stability on a minimal-swing machine. The user-friendly operating concept and comfortable cab starts with the ergonomic joystick, jog dial, keypad and 3.5-inch display all within easy reach and view. The large cab offers plenty of head and legroom, adjustable seat and armrests, ample storage compartments, mobile phone cradle and USB port. GENIE ADDS TWO MORE XC MODELS TO LINEUP

enie’s S-40 and S-45 telescopic booms have been updated to incorporate Genie Xtra Capacity (XC) features. The new Genie telescopic S-40 XC and S-45 XC booms now offer a dual-lift capacity of 660 pounds (300 kg) unrestricted and 1,000 pounds (454 kg) restricted, giving these aerial lifts the ability to perform a wider range of heavier lift tasks on construction and industrial jobsites. These models can work with up to three people in the platform while still leaving room for tools and jobsite materials. XC models comply with the platform load sensing requirements in the new ANSI A92 and CSA B354 industry standards in North America. “With the new ANSI A92 and CSA B354 industry standards changes coming in North America, we took the opportunity to not just update these popular models but to completely redesign them to incorporate all of the advantages of the Genie Xtra Capacity (XC) features,” says Corrado Gentile, Genie product manager, Terex AWP, “along with compatibility to our new generation of accessories and options including the Genie Lift Power generator system and the Genie Tech Pro Link handheld diagnostics tool. Automatic envelope control gives these machines the ability to automatically retract as the booms reach their operating envelope; it also allows for precise platform positioning and an enhanced operator experience. The new Genie S-40 XC and S-45 XC units are equipped with a load sense cell that continuously checks the weight in the platform and limits the operating envelope to match the load chart, all while boasting the ability to do zero-load field calibrations. According to Genie, the redesigned boom structure boasts increased performance, range of motion and envelope control, as well as a robust jib on the Genie S-45 XC model that is capable of easily handling the 1,000-pound (454-kg) maximum capacity. These new Genie XC telescopic booms also come equipped with a chassis tilt sensor incorporated into the machines’ function. The technology in this new sensor is engineered to automatically cut out certain lift and drive functions of the machines when the tilt activation setting is reached. “And, we’ve designed our new chassis tilt sensor to restrict the machine’s range of motion based on the ground angle,” says Gentile. “This new technology gives the new Genie S-40 XC and S-45 XC booms the ability to carry more load than ever before; it has the ability to vary the platform envelope based on the ground slope to maximize these

The new CAN-based control system also allows more data to be remotely monitored than ever before. “With the new Genie Tech Pro Link diagnostics tool, everything service technicians need to know is right in the palm of your hand,” says Gentile. “It allows you to monitor the machine’s gauges, including engine temperature, oil pressure, fuel levels and battery voltage, calibrate the machine,
make speed adjustments during your pre-operation inspection, get service alerts and reminders, track maintenance intervals, receive fault code information and so much more.”
Power and productivity
The Genie S-40 XC and S-45 XC models also feature the new Genie Lift Power generator solution. The new system includes a dedicated hydraulic circuit, a right-sized breaker and no pressure switch to reliably power the generator. The dedicated circuit also runs cooler and enables operators to lift and drive during generator operation. For North America, an all-new 3-kW 120V (60 Hz) generator will efficiently supply power to meet jobsite demands. A three-phase, 240V (60 Hz) 12-kW generator solution is uniquely configured for boom operators to run heavy-duty welding machines. Chicago Pneumatic Power Technique’s new CPS 250 is a single-stage, oil-injected, rotary screw portable compressor. USING RENTAL TO CREATE PRODUCT DEMAND Compact tracked scissor lift is new to Canada and the first of its kind By Nathan Medcalf

ental has been growing at an exponential rate for years and its growth is expected in the near future to continue to outpace both gross domestic product and general construction activity. The American Rental Association forecasts equipment rental revenue will grow from $5.35 billion in 2018 to $6.125 billion in 2021, which translates into growth rates between four and five percent each year. James Ricardo, owner of Momentum Lift Equipment, has rented and used a lot of different brands of access equipment in his career and wanted to start his own equipment rental company. He knew he would have to offer something unique from what is currently on the market in order to compete against the large and well-established rental companies. “I came across the Spider crawler boom and remember being impressed with the machine’s safety features and greater access potential than most access machines. So, I bought two machines and, since there aren’t many machines like this in the market and because it’s such a great product, I founded Momentum Lift Equipment and began representing the company in Ontario,” says Ricardo. “There are various uses for these machines,” says Frank Genua, Momentum sales manager. “We’re doing a lot of demos for construction companies, general builders, mixed maintenance and arborists in order to create demand.”
The Italian job
Successful rental rates of the first two machines encouraged Ricardo to purchase more machines and to represent another manufacturer – Almacrawler s.r.l (Almac). By representing Almac, Momentum increases their rental equipment choices by offering special and unique scissor lifts to their rental fleet. “This Almac scissor lift is the only one of its kind in Canada,” 34

says Genua. “The compact tracked machine uses a BI-levelling system, which means end users can travel on grades with their scissor lift platform fully extended without having to stop each time to reposition. It is a great product.” Scissor lifts are generally wheeled and equipped with a mechanism that prevents them from travelling on grades above a certain degree, because doing so is considered too risky. Attempting to traverse a steep grade with a traditional scissor lift results in an uneven platform and a sudden shift in weight that can “throw” the operator and topple the machine. In a scenario where end-users have a traditional scissor lift and are expected to move it in an environment with grades or uneven surfaces or rough terrain, they drive the machine to reach the place of work, then lower the platform on the scissor before travelling to the next spot, where they must lift the platform once again. Not having to lower and extend the scissor constantly will save time on each move, improving efficiency. The patented BI-levelling undercarriage includes automatic lateral and longitudinal levelling that are able to offer performance, safety and comfort even in the most extreme conditions. This feature is especially useful for constructing the outer shells of buildings and other work where the scissor lift has to be moved just a few feet each time. In these cases, it takes more time to lower/raise the machine than it does to travel. The new generation of Almac machines feature the latest model of the automatic BI-levelling system, which is able to overcome longitudinal slopes of 20 degrees and lateral slopes of 15 degrees. Plus, the machine’s tracks plus the double thermic and electric motorization or battery version also available, allowing it to work well both in indoor and outdoor applications. Marco Scarano, general manager of Elevateur Srl, a rental company and
distributor of AlmaCrawler products in Campania – Naples Area, Italy, also saw the advantage of the new Almac machines. “I added a couple of units in my rental fleet to promote and present to my base of customers. [My customers have] immediately understood the problem-solving potential. Furthermore, I have recently purchased two other new Bibi 1090-BL EVO. I am convinced that this machine, thanks to its greater operating height, the dimensions of the basket, proactive levelling at height together with the unique BI-levelling system, will certainly be even more appreciated by my clients,” says Scarano.

Almac and Momentum Lift are tying themselves at the hip, when it comes to market growth in Canada. Instead of setting up representatives moving only toward big rental companies Almac is reinforcing its presence in North America partnering with Momentum, and will grow in Canada as Momentum grows. “The idea is to grow together because we share the same approach,” says Jonathan Vioni, export area manager, Almac. “We think it’s important to work with someone who can create the market demand, because, as I said before, this is a new concept and problem-solving machines. People are looking for return on investment. They want to know how it will make them more money and save time in their daily activities. This unique concept is the right product that can help users to comprehend that now there is something that can improve the quality of their daily activities. To understand this, people need to use these machines and be conscious that the BI-levelling
scissor can help.” “We have to start as a rental company in order to generate awareness about our product lines,” says Genua. “Although these machines are popular in Europe, they are still relatively unknown in Canada. We have to change the trend. [They offer] productivity, safety, convenience and cost savings. These new machines have all of those features and contractors want machines with those features.” The business plan is to rent to contractors in order to create a demand. Large rental companies who rent to the contractors will see the demand for Almac and Spider machines and want some machines for their rental fleets, so they can rent them to their customers. Then, Momentum will collocate the machines directly to the rental companies. “The long-term goal is to be large enough that we can direct potential customers to the rental companies to get our products,” says Genua. “We see the Canadian market as a big potential for our product,” says Vioni. “There are a lot of construction projects, and as we are the latest player in the access industry, we try to act different, offering a high-quality, innovative, and very reliable product that can be used not only for specific applications but also on daily jobs . . . And as we have seen from adoption rates in Europe and Australia, we are sure that North America is ready to welcome this unique concept along with standard products in the construction industry thanks to its full versatility. 7 STEPS TO EFFECTIVE WHEEL LOADER MAINTENANCE
Performing routine maintenance is critical to safety and productivity
W
e know we are all creatures of habit. Without even realizing it, you have established patterns that structure and fill most of your days – starting with the time you tell your alarm to get you out of bed, to your method for moving material with your wheel loader. While you may tweak your schedule periodically, much of what you do on a daily basis flows from the rhythm of routine. So, it would stand to reason that owners and operators would have a similar approach to routine maintenance on a wheel loader – conducting the same inspections and check lists in the same order at the same time every day… right? Not exactly. When business is good and schedules are hectic, you might rationalize that stretching maintenance intervals or cutting corners would not be too damaging. Unfortunately, that is a habit that can take its toll on the performance of your machine and ultimately impact your productivity. Daily preventive maintenance is important because your machine needs it. “Routine daily maintenance and good pre- and post-use inspections on a wheel loader are critical to keeping safety first and productivity high,” said Aaron Kleingartner, Doosan Infracore North America marketing manager. By following a routine daily maintenance schedule that methodically examines seven key systems and components from the ground up, you can ensure that you will not only prevent many issues from developing, but you can extend your machine’s life cycle. Properly trained operators – There is no routine maintenance plan that will be effective if fleet managers, service technicians and operators aren’t educated on current maintenance methods and procedures. If you are going to perform a majority of your wheel loader’s maintenance yourself, seek the rec36

ommendations of your manufacturer’s maintenance manual for intervals and check lists. Ideally, you’ll also want to obtain maintenance training and assistance from your equipment dealer on proper techniques. Attachment cutting edges – Regardless of the application, loading and unloading material all day can create excessive wear on a loader’s ground-engaging tools. To ensure these high-impact tools stay in peak operating condition, fleet maintenance managers need to perform daily visual inspections of buckets, looking for loose, cracked or missing teeth, and repairing or replacing compromised components as soon as possible. A wheel loader’s attachments such as buckets and pallet forks are some of the most popular and hard-working tools in mining and quarry applications, and should receive the same attention as the machine itself. Visual checks of these components should include hoses and tilt and lift cylinders to determine if wear is developing or damage has occurred. There are other items on bigger buckets that have a working life as well. Examine the condition of wear plates and bolted-on cutting edges, as well as attachment pins to make certain they fit snugly and properly. Tire treads and inflation – Undetected leaks or improper inflation can lead to premature wear and potentially tire failure over time. Owners, fleet managers and operators need to be familiar with their wheel loader’s maintenance manual’s recommendations for proper psi and inflate the tires accordingly. “In addition to maintaining the correct pressure, routine maintenance and inspection of tires also requires a thorough visual inspection to detect sizeable chunks of tread that may be missing and to ensure that the bead line and the rim are intact,” Kleingartner said. Driving and parking brakes – Well-maintained and properly working brakes are one of the most

Many construction applications will contain congested work sites, often with grades, and multiple pieces of equipment and vehicles. In addition to normal loading procedures, there can be a lot of quick stops. For these reasons, operators must be able to halt their equipment, but also hold it with the machine’s parking brake whenever necessary. Driveline seals and axles – Working in wet conditions such as those found in construction, agricultural and concrete plant environments can create a material build-up along the driveline that may mask a potential problem. Keeping that area of the machine clean will allow for a better inspection to identify leaks at the seals and the axles. Fluids, oils, filters – Moving up to the engine compartment, Kleingartner points out that fluids such as engine oil and coolants are among the most important routine maintenance elements. and sight glasses will provide accurate guidance for these checks, as will referring to the operator’s manual for instructions on filling the machine at the recommended intervals with the appropriate fluid in the correct increments. Kleingartner also suggests that owners, operators and technicians stay on track with fluid checks and resist the temptation to use non-OEM specified filters. “It is important to make sure you’re monitoring the same quality performance over the course of recommended maintenance intervals and achieving the best filtration properties,” he said. New wheel loaders entering the market have been engineered with engine after-treatment systems designed to clean diesel engine exhaust and meet the EPA’s emission standards for Tier 4-compliant engines. While each equipment manufacturer has a slightly different emission strategy, it’s more important than ever to follow their guidelines for maintenance and service. Whether a manufacturer’s diesel after-treatment system is a cooled exhaust gas recirculation (CEGR) or the selective catalyst reduction (SCR) technology – or a combination of the two – these new technologies require advanced fluids to avoid costly repairs. For instance, all machines using the CEGR with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) must use American Petroleum Institute (API)-rated CJ-4 oil (sometimes referred to as low-ash oil) to help reduce the amount of particulate matter in the DPF. Also, since sulphur is a significant contributor to diesel exhaust pollutants, the catalyst system used with Tier 4-compliant engines is dependent on ultra-low sulphur diesel (ULSD). It has significantly less sulphur compared to prior diesel fuels. Cooling system – Finally, several types of work sites generate enough dust to become a factor for wheel loader cooling systems. Environments like aggregate quarries may need additional preventive measures. Many manufacturers have also incorporated variable-speed reversible fans to help clean the cooling system. “If you don’t use a reversible fan in dusty conditions, somebody in the maintenance department is going to be working on the cooling group more than they need to,” Kleingartner said. Equipment managers should also be sure to use an engine pre-cleaner to protect the engine cooling group. Approaching daily maintenance with the same diligence as you do your other daily routines will help develop good habits that will eventually become standard work. A comprehensive seven-point plan that starts from the ground up and is based on your manufacturer’s specific recommendations will impact your overall business – and the good health of your wheel loader depends on it. n today’s construction jobsites, the way in which contractors and their employees approach safety has changed dramatically. Where safety was often an afterthought in the past, today there is a strong focus on making it a part of workplace culture – an overlying piece of every day’s work that ensures everyone goes home safely at the end of every shift. The challenge with establishing and expanding a safety culture on heavy equipment jobs has rarely been a lack of interest, but a lack of time to deal with the inevitable byproduct of a well-designed safety plan: the documentation. With more and more construction software companies bringing solutions for safety onto the market, though, the opportunities for growth in safety planning are expanding. One problem with the traditional safety plan developed by many organizations is that it’s done at a high level by a safety director, and then is implemented from that high level. Stacey McCroskey, product manager for HCSS Safety, said that meant that there was less buy-in with workers on the ground. “The safety is always high when the safety director is on a construction site, and then that tends to diminish when they have moved on to the next site,” she related.
Those plans are often well rooted in the office, which comes – especially in construction companies, which are often still catching up with their peers when it comes to technology – with a lot of paper. When an organization has been using paper documentation as its basis for years, it’s hard to encourage a move towards less cumbersome and more functional approaches, McCroskey said. “Paper’s still the primary competi-
tor in the industry because companies are still saying ‘We’ve been doing this for four generations, I don’t know why you’re trying to make us change now,’” she said. “The primary weakness of paper is that when you get a pile of paper in front of you, how do you know which piece is going to tell you where the potential next problem is?” When it comes time to seek out records of specific activities taken under

the company’s safety plan, paper becomes even more of a problem, simply through its volume. “If an incident happens or they need to pull paperwork for some sort of litigation, you’ve got boxes and boxes of banker boxes in a warehouse somewhere that you need to search to find the one piece of paper to show you did hold a safety meeting on a particular topic,” McCroskey said. “The amount of paperwork just gets crazy… you’ve got these mountains of paperwork that they’re trying to maintain.” Depending on the company, there are any number of activities that need a paper trail, from toolbox safety talks to pre-work site inspections or equipment inspections. “It can get quite complicated. Your subcontractor may be working multiple different jobs for multiple general contractors that each have their own set of forms,” McCroskey said. It’s the constant need to stop and fill out paperwork that helps sell electronic systems and software solutions to reluctant construction industry members, she said. “It eventually saves you time – you won’t need to fill out two pages of paper to do an inspection, and instead you’re just clicking on buttons. It frees up your safety person, who doesn’t need to chase around paperwork – because a lot of time the paper gets stuck in a foreman’s pickup, gets stuff spilled on it, or gets crumpled up,” she noted. “I can’t say that all of them are excited about moving to technology and off paper. Once they start using it, they find they love it because it does save them time.” Solutions like HCSS Safety take the paperwork out of the equation and offer the entire company flexibility and mobility, from the work site to the office. In addition, they offer users an easier way to conduct the safety activities that are part of the daily routine and greater opportunity for head office to analyze the efforts over time. On the jobsite, crew members are able to access HCSS Safety through an iPad, with a variety of functions, McCroskey said. “We have a library of prepared safety presentations or toolbox talks, so the foreman pulls up the talk and it has their talking points ready for them. They can take a picture of the crew or have them sign off with their finger on a signature pad… that is in a manager’s system back at the home office within five seconds,” she said. Having a portable interface makes the toughest part of implementing a safety program – the confirmation that it’s been delivered – easier. It also helps with transition for staff who may not be comfortable with technology. “A lot of times when we go out and do field training with the foremen, a lot of them have never held an iPad or had smartphones,” McCroskey said. “We try to keep things simple on the field app, but the great thing is that once you do get the field involved, you raise the level of awareness and now
they’re paying attention to safety, even if it’s just in the back of their minds.” Once meetings and inspections begin using the mobile interface, head office gets another benefit: more data, and more analytics that can help with monitoring effectiveness of the current safety structure in the company. “You can look at leading indicators to try to predict where there might be problems, or where you need additional training,” McCroskey described. “Your personnel at the home office who see the data coming in know who’s doing what and what’s going on in the field – they have a real-time pull of data from
the field, which is important. If they run the analytics, they can catch problems before they become a major incident. Over time, that helps them lower their insurance premiums.” Adapting a company to use the new solutions is generally fairly easy, especially when everyone buys in to the lighter paperwork load. Generally, companies will send teams to HCSS, for example, and spend a week being trained on the new system, how the software operates and how to manage the data, among other things, so that they can return and train others. HCSS will also send trainers to work

with foremen and others on the jobsite. Both large and small construction companies are taking up software solutions for their safety plans now, McCroskey reported. While the big players have always had safety programs in place, the smaller operations have sometimes lagged behind. “I think with smaller companies part of it may be the introduction of millennials into the workforce – they expect a bit of technology,” she said. “We’re definitely seeing smaller companies start to develop safety programs, even if they’re just really small – at least it’s something.” HEG

Remote-controlled wheel loaders to be tested when Volvo CE receives Sweden’s first 5G network for industry AUTOMATION Telia, Ericsson and Volvo Construction Equipment have launched Sweden’s first 5G network for industrial use at Volvo CE’s facility in Eskilstuna. Volvo CE will then become one of the first in the world to use 5G technology to test remote-controlled machines and autonomous solutions. The 5G network will be used at Volvo CE’s research and development facility at Eskilstuna to further develop solutions for remote control of construction machinery and fully automated solutions. It will also be used to increase understanding of how connected machines can create added value for the customer. “Automation has several levels and having 5G is an important technical support to enable us to drive development in this area. These trials in Eskilstuna will include the remote control of a conventional wheel loader but also further tests of the HX2 concept load carrier,” says Melker Jernberg, president, Volvo CE. “We can see that the industry’s interest in 5G is considerable. Automation of the entire flow will mean new ways of working and greater gains from efficiency. But to connect business-critical machines and vehicles requires a solution that is able to handle the massive amounts of data with guaranteed connection. That is what 5G can give us. And we are proud to lead the 5G development in Sweden together with our partners,” says Anders Olsson, CEO of Telia Sweden.

Thousands visit National Heavy Equipment Show in Mississauga TRADE SHOW Big crowds of heavy equipment professionals filled the halls of Mississauga’s International Centre for the 2019 edition of the National Heavy Equipment Show, which took place March 28-29. This year’s edition welcomed 12,668 buyers, holding steady with past events. With large-scale projects planned across the country for roadbuilding, infrastructure, and more, key decision makers and purchasers came out in full force to this year’s show. “The National Heavy Equipment Show remains one of the biggest events bringing the industry together in Canada,” said Mark Cusack, National Show manager. “It was a pleasure to welcome even more companies to the show floor this year. This growth allowed us to highlight more sectors, such as the expanded Gravel Pit showing huge equipment. On behalf of show management, we’re thankful for everyone who joined us. We’re already looking forward to 2021.” Show attendees included a mix of industry professionals including leaders in the construction, roadbuilding, land improvement, and infrastructure industries – along with job seekers, students and those training for specific trades. Skyjack forms exclusive partnership with Atlantic rental company MacFarlands PARTNERSHIP Skyjack has formed a contract with MacFarlands Industrial for their new Moncton, New Brunswick location. MacFarlands has been renting throughout Atlantic Canada for over 50 years. Skyjack will be the sole supplier of all DC electric scissor lifts to MacFarlands. “We’ve serviced Atlantic Provinces from our Nova Scotia location since 1963 and have been thinking about expanding for quite some time,” said Scott Bishop, operations manager at MacFarlands Industrial. “With our second location, we’ll be able to keep up with demand coming from our customers operating out of New Brunswick.”
In late 2018, Doosan opened a new 100,000-square-foot parts distribution center in the Atlanta area. A second Doosan parts distribution centre in Lacey, Washington, became operational April 1, 2019. The Doosan parts distribution centre in Lacey is approximately 57,000 square feet. Doosan dealers and customers in the Western United States and Canada will benefit from the new facility, with better service options, deeper inventory and faster parts delivery.
Terex Trucks aims to expand dealer network in North America The company wants to expand its already 35-strong North American dealer network, bringing its TA300 and TA400 machines to even more customers throughout the region. According to Dodge Data & Analytics, U.S. construction projects started this year will carry a combined value of $808 billion. Also, at the moment, companies taking on energy projects are doing particularly well because major renovation work is underway in and around B.C. “Historically, North America has always been a strong market for us,” said Robert Franklin, sales and marketing director, Americas. “A significant proportion of the machines we make at our Motherwell facility are distributed to customers across this region. As a company, we want to grow our business in North America, reaching new customers and working with our dealer network to deliver an even better service.”
