In March 2016 we were joined by two speakers who explored the world of fashion through the lens of the local area and the incredible contribution of a community.
Dr Kathy Chater is a self-employed historian, writer and genealogist. Specialising in family history, Huguenot and black communities, Kathy has written a number of works including Tracing Your Huguenot Ancestry and Untold Histories, which explores the lives of black people in England and Wales between 1660 – 1807. Within “Hats, Huguenots and High Street Fashion,” Kathy explored the Huguenot community of Wandsworth with particular focus on their textile knowledge and millinery expertise.
Amy de la Haye, Professor of Dress History and Curatorship at the London College of Fashion spoke about 1920s fashion. From 1991-1999 she was Curator of 20th Century Dress at the Victoria & Albert Museum and has also curated exhibitions at Brighton Museum, in Selfridges, Carnaby Street, London College of Fashion and Somerset House.
