Inter arma silent musae – Háborúban hallgatnak a Múzsák... Ámos Imre életműve ellentmond a kétezer éves latin közmondásnak. A hagyományokhoz kötődő, múlton merengő, befelé forduló festő művészete épp a második világháború alatt teljesedik ki. A mítosz és álom vonzásában élő művész a háború kitörésének évében a történelem közvetlen reakciójaként jut el morális felelősségének felismeréséig. Ahogy a fasizmus egyre nyíltabban támad közvetlenül az emberre, úgy növekszik a lírai alkatú festő hite, prófétáló ereje. Vállalja korát és sorstársait.

Mint bibliai ősei, küldetést teljesít. Ahogy Ézsaiásnak, az ő ajkát is megérintette tüzes parazsával az Úr. Árkádia békéje egyre jobban távolodik tőle. A társadalmi kérdésektől visszahúzódó, a hétköznapok szépségében megkapaszkodó festőt kérlelhetetlenül sodorja magával kora. Szembeszegül a történelmi erőszakkal. Az esztétikum keresése, a képépítés formaproblémái helyett elkötelezetten fordul a kor etikai létkérdéseihez.

Stílusa is megváltozik. Balladai tömörségű, egyetemes érvényű szimbólumokkal jeleníti meg Európa haláltáncának valóságvízióját.

Műveiből, írásaiból a legnagyobb megpróbáltatások között is tisztán sugárzik ethosza.

De „égi jeleire” nem figyel fel a vesztébe rohanó Európa. Magányosan harcol frontokon, lágerekben. Élete utolsó percéig alkot, dolgozik. A munkaszolgálatok alatt készített törékeny finomságú rajzaival tanúsít, felráz, emlékeztet. Prófétai hittel és erővel azonosul a kiszolgáltatottakkal. Műveit az erőszaktól iszonyodó, az igazság erejében hívő kiválasztottak tanúságtételeként hagyta ránk.

Ámos – eredeti nevén Ungár – Imre 1907. december 7-én született Nagykállón, a fővárostól távol eső Szabolcs megye egyik legrégibb településén. Apja Ungár Zsigmond kiskereskedő, szatócsok, rőfösök, vásárosok ivadéka. Anyja, Liszer Paula, miután fiatalon özvegy lett, visszaköltözött a szülői házba. Nagyapja, Liszer Adolf, kántor és talmudmagyarázó, a helyi iskola köztiszteletben álló tanára művelt, felvilágosult szellemű ember volt, aki a tudást az anyagi javak fölé emelte. Gyermekeit, unokáit nem nevelte bigott, ortodox szabályok szerint. A Kabbala, a Tóra tanításai, Taub Eizik legendái mellett unokájának Krisztus bibliai történetéről is beszélt. A festő a nagyszülői házban ismerte meg a mítoszt, a csodarabbik földjének hitvilágát, mely egész életét meghatározta.

A két világháború között Kállón, akárcsak a Tisza és a Bodrog mentén, egy egyedülálló haszid paraszt zsidó kultúra virágzott. Alapítója Israel Baal Sem Tov volt, aki a pogromok, üldöztetések után tanításaival reményt nyújtott az egyszerű, szegény embereknek. Az új vallási irányzat a XVIII. században érkezett Galíciából a Kárpát-medencébe, ahol hamarosan széles körökben elterjedt.

A haszidizmus a törvények szigorú betartása helyett az odaadó szeretet, a jóakarat meg a lélek tisztaságának fontosságát hangsúlyozta. Közvetlen kapcsolatot hirdetett Isten és az ember között. Pásztorok, földművesek vallották, hogy Isten minden földi dologban ott rejtőzik, ezért minden ember felelős a tetteiért és gondolataiért. Az ember célja, hogy örömöt szerezzen másoknak és rátaláljon a lélek harmóniájára. Hittek abban, hogy a legendákhoz hasonlóan a jó mindig győz a rossz felett. Felfedezték az élet szépségét.

Az ima mellett munkával, tánccal, énekkel, „örvendezésben való szolgálattal” egyaránt az Urat dicsérték. Ámos Imre gyerekkorában sok történetet hallott a nagykállói csodatevő rabbiról, Taub Eizikről. Különös tisztelet övezte a pásztorfiúból lett tudós caddikot, az igazmondót, akinek legendáit szájról szájra adták. Pásztorok, szántóvetők, fuvarosok, szatócsok hitték, hogy a caddik halála után is csodát tesz. Sírjához messze földről zarándokoltak. Kívánságaikat kis cédulákra írva dobták sírjába.

A haszid legendákban, akárcsak Ámos későbbi festményeiben, a valóság pillanatai összeolvadnak az áhított csodákkal, az élet és az álom természetes kiegészítője egymásnak. Az „elrévedő” caddik alakja a festő képeinek gyakori forrása. (Álmodó rabbi, Öreg templomszolga a gyerekeknek mesél, Kabbalista) Nagykálló, 1913

A gyermekkor, a kállói otthon Ámos Imrétől minden nyugtalanító körülményt távol tartott. A vallásos hit mellett emberi hitet, védelmet, erkölcsi fundamentumot adott.

1925-ben érettségizett jeles eredménnyel a Nagykállói Magyar Állami Főgimnáziumban.

Az érettségi után Budapestre jön, a Láng Gépgyárban mint ezüstöző és festő dolgozik.

1927-ben családja kívánságára beiratkozik a Műegyetemre, ahol két évet végez az általános mérnöki karon. 1929-ben teljesül gyerekkori vágya, felveszik a budapesti Képzőművészeti Főiskolára. Tanára, Rudnay Gyula hamarosan felismeri a fiatal Ámos tehetségét.

Első linóleummetszeteiben (Vak verklis, Hídon, Rakodómunkás, 1929), melyek még erőteljesen kötődnek a reális tér-időhöz, a társadalom perifériáján élő szegény ember életét ábrázolja.

A Vidd el folyó a mi bűneinket (1930) rézkarca gyerekkori emlékének, a Taschlich ünnepi szertartásának expresszív kivetítése. Ros Hasono – kürtharsogás – délutánján a hívő zsidók a közeli folyóhoz mennek. Arccal a folyó felé fordulva ismétlik Mikeás próféta szavait, miközben kenyérmorzsákat szórnak a vízbe, a bűnöktől való szabadulás jelképeként. „Nem tartja meg haragját örökké, mert gyönyörködik az irgalmasságban. Hozzánk térvén könyörül rajtunk: eltapodja álnokságainkat. A tenger mélységébe veted minden bűnünket.”

A főiskolára családi nevén, Ungár Imreként iratkozott be, de 1929-től felveszi az Ámos nevet. Korai képeit egymásba akasztott UAI iniciáléval jelzi. Tudatosan választja a Biblia első kisprófétájának nevét, megérezve és vállalva a prófétai küldetést.

1931-ben Kreisl Béla magániskolájában megismeri a 17 éves Anna Margitot, Vaszary János festőnövendékét, akiben életre szóló barátot, társat talál. Naplófeljegyzések, levelek mutatják sokrétű kapcsolatukat, életük elválaszthatatlan összefonódását.

Az 1930-ban főiskolás hallgatóként festett Önarckép Ady maszkkal és Tél című olajfestményeken a posztimpresszionista hagyományokat folytatja. Mindkét képen hangsúlyosan emeli ki Ady Endre maszkját, mellyel szellemi hovatartozására utal.

Nyaranta hazamegy szülővárosába. Önarcképeket, portrékat fest családtagjairól. Az alakokat környezetükben, egy-egy hozzájuk tartozó kedves tárggyal ábrázolja. Korai képeinek formavilágában, a Nabik, Bonnard, Rippl-Rónai József, Berény Róbert hatása érvényesül. De míg festőelődeinél a dekorativitás, a szenzuális hatás az alapvető, Ámost a pszichés elmélyedés érdekli. Szabadulni akar az anyag kötöttségeitől, tudatosan redukálja a színeket.

Szemléletében, ahogy naplójában írja, Chagall-lal, Csontváryval, Gulácsyval érez rokonságot. Festői látásmódja, az álom és a felszabadító képzelet, a felszínre hozott rejtett, ezoterikus tartalmak iránti érzékenysége köti ezekhez a mesterekhez.

A Csodavárók (1932) című nagyméretű kompozíciója még egyfajta útkeresés. Erős kontúrokkal határolt alakjai, a bekötött szemű festő, mögötte a megtartó hitves és a távolt kutató mester (Rudnay Gyula) az előtér egyetlen képsíkjában várnak a csodára. Ámos megállítja az időt, a mulandót, és időtlenné transzponálja.

1934 augusztusában harminc lapból álló linóleummetszet-sorozatot készít a nagyvárosban otthontalanná vált szegény ember magányáról. A Víztől vízig epikus cselekmény vonala mögött ott húzódnak a kállói közösségből kiszakadt fiatal festő személyes élményei.

A sorozat a modern nagyváros és az ártatlanságban élő természeti ember magányának balladaian tömör megütközése.

Ámos Imre 1934-ben elvégzi a budapesti Képzőművészeti Főiskolát. 1931-től kezdve minden évben részt vesz a Szinyei Táraság Nemzeti Szalonban rendezett Fiatalok Tavaszi Kiállításán. 1934-ben a társaság Szinyei-díját is megnyeri. A Szépművészeti Múzeum Fővárosi Képtára képet vásárol tőle. A következő évben az Ernst Múzeum CLII. csoportkiállításán mutatja be műveit (37 festményt), melyeket a sajtó és a szakma nagy elismeréssel fogad.

„Festményei úgy hatnak, mint régi freskók, az arcok, mintha megálmodta volna őket. Öröm volt a fiatal művészt felfedezni, fejlődési útján megfigyelni. Sokat ígérő tehetség, aki már sok mindent be is váltott.” 1 1. G. Ö. Pester Lloyd, 1935. április 28.

„Már első kiállításán a Szinyei Merse Társaság Tavaszi Szalonján feltűnést keltett halvány, álomszerű freskó benyomását keltő képeivel. Azóta tovább álmodja ködös lelkivilágának imbolygó alakjait. Ez a világ különös, leheletszerű, fakósápadt. Színei csendesen hullámoznak a háttérben. A fiatal poétalélek új, megváltást váró világa ez, amely felelevenedik vásznain. Reményteljes indulás, mélyen érző, önálló formákat kereső művész bemutatkozása.” 2 A kiállítás egyik kiemelkedő darabja az Asszonyok vízparton (1935) című festménye. „…nagy sokaság várta a víznek megmozdulását. Mert időnként angyal szálla a tóra és felzavará a vizet: aki tehát először lépett bele a víz felzavarása után, meggyógyult, akárminémű betegsége is volt.” 3 Ámos festményén nem vakok és sánták, hanem a lélek magányától szenvedő fiatal lányok és beteg öregek várják a csodát, láthatatlan sebeik gyógyulását, szellemi újjászületésüket. Az álmodozó, félig lehunyt szemű alakok csak a távolit látják. Arcukon rejtély és szomorúság, tekintetükben ott lebeg a mulandóság fájdalma. Mögöttük a forrás, az életet jelképező víz a priori szimbóluma és ők türelmesen várják a csodát, vágyaik beteljesülését.

Mintha egy láthatatlan fátyol választaná el tőlünk ezeket az arcokat, mely megakadályozza, hogy behatolhassunk legbensőbb énjükbe. Önmagukba zárkózva hordják múltjukat és jelenüket. Átadják magukat a pillanatnak, hogy kiemelkedjenek életük kötöttségeiből.

Halvány, visszafogott tónusok, elfojtott színek, tudatos színredukció jellemzik festményét.

A lokálszínek alla príma felületét egymásra hordott rétegekben variálja, majd fehérrel töri meg.

A Süketek a szentek című festményét (1935) szülővárosának, gyerekkorának emlékei ihletik. Tradicionális kettős arcképek helyett Taub Eizik sírkápolnája előtt édesanyjával ábrázolja önmagát. A halott anya felidézi hitvilágának kultikus tárgyait: a képben szellemi világának attribútumaiként hangsúlyosan emeli ki az emberiség jövőjének hajnalát jelző kakast és a titkokat rejtő kulcsot. Ámos Imre első festői korszakának műveiben tiszta, eszményi világot teremt, melybe ő maga is vágyott. A látvány a tér-idő harmonikus egységében bontakozik ki, valóságélmények egyesülnek mitikus, egyetemes érzésekkel, melyekben egy-egy általános érvényű szimbólum is megjelenik. A festő túllép a primer szenzualizmuson. A kézzelfogható anyagiság a szellemi kifejezés elvontságával párosul.

Ámos 1935-ben feleségül veszi Anna Margitot, aki festményeinek, rajzainak állandó modellje. Közös műtermük albérleti szobájuk. Sok nélkülözés között élnek, de szegénységüket feledteti szerelmük, egymásba és a művészetbe vetett hitük. A harmincas években albérletből albérletbe költöznek.

„Rettenetes nyomorban éltünk. A Károly körúti tejivóban kaptunk reggelit, kávét és zsemlyét. Reggeli után gyalog hazamentünk és dolgoztunk, mint a napszámosok.

Minden nap egyformán. Egymásnak háttal festettünk, hogy ne zavarjuk egymást. Amíg hideg szobánk volt, sokat kínlódtunk. Délben elmentünk a menzára. A kenyeret is innen vittük haza titokban, vacsorára. Gyalog jártunk, hogy ne kelljen villamosra pénzt fizetni.” 4 Ámos Imre 1935. december 7-én egy kockás fedelű iskolai füzetben kezdi naplóját írni.

A napló életének leghitelesebb tükre, melyben a hétköznapi örömök, gondok, hányattatások, belső vívódások mellett hitvallását is őszintén feltárja.

„Ma töltöttem be 28. életévemet. Magam sem tudom, miért jegyzem fel mindennapi életem eseményeit. Mondanivalómat festőileg igyekszem kifejezni… Amit elértem a kollegák és az emberek előtt, a munkámmal értem el. Megállapodottan, lelkileg kiegyensúlyozottan, egy előttem már csaknem tisztán álló úton szeretném küzdelmes, de nem elégedetlen, néha örömöket is nyújtó életemet megértő, szeretettel mellettem álló élettársammal továbbélni.” 5 Néha hónapokig, sőt évekig nem ír, máskor gyors egymást követő hetekben jegyzi fel impresszióit és életének eseményeit. A napló egyértelműen mutatja, a festészet tökéletesen kitöltötte életét.

„Semmi mást nem teszünk az elért eredményekért, mint azt, hogy dolgozunk, belső szükségből, őszintén, nem politizálunk, ha pénzünk van, anyagot veszünk, s ha kiállítani tudunk, az sem a tülekedés miatt van, hanem, mert jó az anyagunk és eleget dolgozunk.” 6 1936-ban részt vesz a Munkácsy Céh IX. reprezentatív kiállításán a Nemzeti Szalonban, júliusban megnyeri a Lipótvárosi Kaszinó 250 pengős díját, majd ősszel feleségével együtt az Ernst Múzeum a CLXI. Csoportkiállításán 38 festményét mutatja be. Néhány kritika hangsúlyozza „tehetségét”, „színkultúráját”, de többnyire közönyös, tartózkodó, olykor támadó írások jelennek meg a napilapokban.

Keserűen jegyzi fel naplójában: „…kénytelen vagyok félretenni az igazán belülről jött képeket, mivel az itthoni légkör nem alkalmas, hogy előhozakodjak velük… kényszerítve vagyok arra, hogy tulajdonképpeni pihenésnek számított időben festett, a természettel közelebbi kapcsolatban levő dolgokat hozzam elő azoknak, akik igen ritkán venni akarnak tőlem. A gyűjtők is, kritikusok is rá akarják erőltetni az emberre saját fölfogásukat, pedig ki érzi a képek belső értékét jobban, mint maga a festője.” 7 Miközben napi gondokkal küzd, egyre jobban foglalkoztatja a valóság dimenzióinak kitágítása, a tárgyak titkos jelentése.

„Pár napig otthon voltam szülővárosomban. Ahogy elnéztem a régi bútorokat, nagyapám könyvszekrényét, pipatartóját, a régi gyertyatartókat, tükröket, mind egy-egy képet indított el bennem. Engem gyakran egy-egy tárgy indított munkára régebben is.

Egyiket-másikat sajátos légkör vesz körül, amikhez társulnak emlékképeim. Ezeknek az emlékképeknek a kivetítése érdekel újabban. Asszociatív expresszionizmusnak nevezem magamba ezt a törekvést.

Szerintem másként nem lehet újat adni csak úgy, ha az ember őszintén adja vissza a lelkében élő képeket. Olyan érzések kivetítésére törekszem, amik csak az enyémek, és mégis mindenkié. Nem lefesteni akarok valamit, hanem a tárggyal, a figurával asszociált emlékképek összességét belesűríteni a képfelületbe úgy, hogy a lelki tartalom legyen az a plusz, ami az általános követelményeken kívül (szerkesztés, komponálás, szín) megkülönbözteti minden más képtől. Bizonyos spirituális jelleget szeretnék belevinni minden dolgomba.” 8 A Dédanyám tükre előtt című festmény elsődlegesen már nem a kállói otthon enteriőrjét ábrázolja. Egyetlen térben egyesíti a kisvárosi délután múlékony pillanatát és az emlékképet. A tükör nemcsak a magasra vetett ágyat, a szemben levő fal képeit tükrözi: elmosódott, lebegő foltokként rajzolódnak ki az ősök, a család emberéleteket átfogó, összetartó ereje, az élet örök folytonossága. A jelen és múlt szimultán megjelenítésével bontja meg a kép hagyományos tér-idő egységét.

„Nem elég lefestenünk a tárgyakat, figurákat vagy tájakat, csak mint motívumokat, hanem szerintem ezeknek a holtan is élő tárgyaknak a lelkét, illetve a környezetükre való hatását kell a festőnek szubjektív víziós látásán keresztül kivetítenie” – fogalmazza meg Ámos Imre ars poetica értékű törekvését. 9 Egyre jobban érdekli az emlékezet és az álom képi kivetítése. „Talán az emberiség történetében lesz még egy olyan korszak is, mikor az igazi művészek azok lesznek, akik magukat transzba hozva adják az emberi érzéseket, olyan formában, hogy azok a tudatalattival, az álommal és a kozmikus erőkkel legyenek összefüggésben” – írja naplójában. 10 Ámos Imre festményeiben az álom a vágyak manifesztációja. A tudatalatti nem bomlik fragmentumokra. Valóság és álom úgy egyesül, hogy a valóságot mitikus szintre emeli. Számára az álom az ébrenlét megváltoztathatatlannak tűnő körülményeitől való szabadulást jelenti, melyben lerázhatja kötöttségeit. Álmainak a festő maga a főszereplője, egyúttal irányítója is. A szürrealista festészettel ellentétben Ámos sohasem kapcsolja ki a tudatot és az emóciót, melyek az asszociációkat egymáshoz fűzik.

Festményein az élet reális helyzeteiben jelenik meg az álom, melynek asszociációs tartalmával tágítja a kép tartalmi közlését.

A Zöld dívány (1935) című festményén a díványon fekvő férfi álmában megjelenik a tudás és a törvény könyvét olvasó próféta. Az álom irreális jelenségét a reális figura mozdulatával illeszti szervesen a valóságos térbe.

Az Álom a medvetáncoltatóról (1937) festményén a falusi vásári komédiás játékosan groteszk alakja elevenedik meg. Az álom komplexitása áttételesebben bontakozik ki az Álom című képén, melyben a hangulati egységet ellentétes álomtöredékek egymáshoz kapcsolásával váltja fel. A festő álma itt már nem gyerekkori vágykivetülés.

A szoba tárgyai még az otthon védettségét sugározzák, de az ablakon túli külvilágban veszélyt hozó jelek jelennek meg. Ámos megkettőzi önmagát.

A képzelet által teremtett álombeli festő fején Krisztus töviskoszorúja halálszorongásának, üldöztetésének előérzete. A napi munka után Ámos Imre gyakran olvas, különösen Ady Endre és Kosztolányi Dezső verseit szereti. Feleségével rendszeresen jár a Szépművészeti Múzeum könyvtárába, ahol Matisse, Emil Nolde és Chagall képeit tanulmányozza. A Múlt és jövő egyik számában közölt Chagall-fotó alapján ceruzarajzot is készít Chagallról, akihez közös világképük is vonzotta.

Munka közben / Working / a lavoro

„Most még csak egy nagy vágyunk volna, hogy kimehessünk egy kicsit külföldre” – írja 1937. május 13-án naplójában. „Rettenetes szükségét érezzük egy kis felfrissítésnek, impressziógyűjtésnek. Nem lehet az embernek végletekig kisajtolni magából a képeket.

A tele zseb is kiürül egyszer, hát még az, amit éveken át fosztogatnak.” Ámos Imre 1937. szeptember 22-én érkezik Anna Margittal Párizsba. Mohón szívja magába a világváros élményeit, melyekről naplójában is beszámol.

„1937. október 7.

Emberfeletti utánajárással sikerült pár képet eladnunk, úgyhogy összejött pár száz pengő, s felhasználva a világkiállítási kedvezményt, kijöttünk… Egy kis cserkészotthonban kaptunk szállást, egy szobácskát Passyban.

Párizs első benyomásra olyan, hogy az ember ott született és ott akar meghalni. A látnivalók mesések. Itt minden a maga nagyságában mutatkozik meg, s az embert lépten-nyomon művészi élmények fogadják. Most a kiállításra pedig éppen össze van hordva a világ legjobb francia gyűjteménye.”

A Párizsban töltött három hónap alatt Ámos keveset fest, inkább rajzol, impressziókat gyűjt. Harmonikus, lírai képeket fest a párizsi utcákról, terekről. A látvány vitális, érzéki szépségét örökíti meg, melybe álomképeit szövi. Színei is életörömének ritka pillanatait tükrözik: a mályvákat, okkereket, cinóbereket áttüzesíti egy-egy fehér izzású türkizzel, ibolyával.

Párizsi tartózkodásának kiemelkedő eseménye Chagall-lal való találkozása.

„1937. október 4. Épp most jöttünk haza Chagalltól… Mi szólni sem tudtunk az örömtől, hogy szemtől szembe láthatjuk és beszélhetünk vele, akit annyira megszerettünk a piktúráján keresztül…

Aranyos figura, sárga-fekete csíkos blúz, vöröses ing, szürke gyapjúnadrág volt rajta, haja borzas, villogó furcsa ferde szemével mosolyogva fogadott bennünket és bevezetett egy képekkel teli szobába. Egyik szebb volt, mint a másik... Nagyon örült, hogy sok mutatnivalót vittünk és nekiült a rajzoknak és képeknek… Egészen komoly elragadtatást láttam rajta... őszintén látszott rajta, hogy tetszenek neki... Sie müssen in Paris leben und arbeiten – mondotta. Egész csomót kifogástalannak talált. Egyik-másiknál a színnel és a konstrukcióval kapcsolatban tett kifogást.

Nagyon fiatalok vagyunk még -mondotta. A belső átélésünk remek. A kifejezés ellen sem mondhat semmi rosszat. De ha Párizsban fogunk dolgozni hosszabb ideig, egészen megvilágosodik előttünk, ami most még itt-ott hiányzik. Nagyon jólesett a kedvessége.

Eddig csak messziről csodálhattuk, most kezet szoríthattunk vele… Végül is azzal búcsúzott el, hogy örül, hogy ilyen nagyszerű fiatalokat ad Magyarország.” Ámos Imrét közös kelet-európai determináltsága, neveltetése, vallása, befelé forduló igazságkereső szemlélete vonzotta Chagallhoz. Festészetükben számos közös motívum van. Sorsukat, hitüket, ars poeticájukat, látomásaikat azonos források táplálták. Eltérő életkörülményeik ellenére a vallás közösségformáló ereje, az imákkal és rituális szertartásokkal átitatott hétköznapok és ünnepek misztikus élménye mindkettőjüknek azonos erkölcsi tartást adott.

A misztika iránti érzékenységükből adódik, hogy mindketten érzelmi indíttatással közelednek a világhoz. S miközben Európa avantgárd művészete formaproblémákkal kísérletezik, Chagall és Ámos szimbolikus jelentésű víziórendszert, öntörvényű univerzumot alakít ki, melyben az emberi világ a mulandó, az évezredes jelentések felidézésével gazdagodik.

A két festő művészetében az analógiák elsősorban az ősi szimbolikus motívumok hangsúlyozásában mutathatók ki. De míg Chagall képein a pogány életöröm találkozik a belső révülettel, az ember eufóriás boldogságban oldódik fel a természetben, Ámos nem ismeri a mohó életélvezetet, robbanó dinamizmust. Chagall festményein a szerelem titokzatosságának és féktelenségének apoteózisát is megteremti, Ámos festészetéből hiányzik a szenvedély animális, örömteli jelenléte, ő szemérmesebb alkatú, a külvilág elől elrejti legbelsőbb érzelmeit.

Chagall szeret és tud játszani. Gyakran teremt groteszk helyzeteket, önmaga is nevetve tekint képein a világ furcsaságaira. Ámos művészete tisztán érzelmi fogantatású, ritkán tud felszabadulni a létfenntartási napi küzdelmek, a szegénység szorongásai és szorongattatásai alól.

Chagall formavilágára a kubizmus is hatott. A teret ő merészebben bontja meg, természetesen cseréli fel a lentet és a föntet. Festményein meseszerű tereket kapcsol egybe, ahol nem érvényesek a szenzuális tapasztalatok, égi és földi, reális és szürreális a tér mágikus vonzásában alkot dinamikus víziót. Jelen, múlt, jövő áthatja egymást. Ámos is megnyitja a jelen idődimenzióját, de nem gyorsítja fel, nem a pillanatok sokszorozódnak meg, hanem a múlt archetipikus kollektív mítoszában fogant időből akar feltöltődni és erőt meríteni.

Ámos maga így látja festészetének Chagallhoz való kapcsolódását: „Nagyon nehéz megoldanom azokat a víziószerű képeket, amikben álomszerűen jelennek meg gondolataim. Én szeretem puhán, egymást el nem takarva a képfelületre vinni a motívumokat, nem úgy, mint Chagall, aki ilyen irányú képein keményen jeleníti meg a dolgokat, reálisan festve, kivetített gondolatainak megfelelően.” 11 A Chagall-lal való találkozás mellett Ámos másik nagy élménye a Párizsi Világkiállítás spanyol pavilonja. A kiállítás fő műve Picasso Guernicája: megrázó erejű protestálás a fasizmus vérengzése ellen. 12 Ámos Imre és Anna Margit három hónapot töltenek Párizsban.

„Nem bírtunk kinn maradni. Pénzünk fogytán haza kellett jönnünk, bár hazatérésünkön sok barátunk csodálkozott. Ott idegenek voltunk. Minden olyan bizonytalannak tűnt, nem lehetett tudni, mi történik a világban. Mindenki biztatott az ottmaradásra, de senki sem gondolt arra, hogy a dicsérő és vállveregető szavakon túl segítségünkre legyen.

Elhatároztuk, hogy visszamegyünk Pestre, ott legalább otthon vagyunk” – emlékezik vissza Anna Margit. 13 Hazatérése után Ámos még erősebben fordul Kálló haszid hitvilágához, gyerekkori vallásos emlékeihez. Festményeinek visszatérő alakjai az álmodozó rabbik, öreg templomszolgák és az Ószövetség etikai sugárzású alakjai. A csodatevő caddik, az öregek bölcsessége, a péntek esték gyertyalángjai, az anya fohásza összefonódnak a napsütötte utcákban megrekedt nyár melegével, az alkonyi fényben tovatűnő különös árnyakkal.

A szellemi utáni vágyat, a materiális kötöttségektől való felszabadulás örömét Ámos a haszid legendákból ismerte, melyek gyakran idézik fel a csodatevő rabbik, kabbalisták álmodozó, elrévült alakját. Az öreg templomszolga a gyerekeknek mesél (1938) című festményen a gyerekek áhítattal hallgatják. A templomszolga mesélés közben álmodozva ül karosszékében, a gyerekek arcán is áhítat és hit sugárzik. Ámos hangsúlyosan emeli ki a háttérben a sófár jelképes motívumát, melynek hangja a tanítások szerint megnyitja az eget, hogy az imádságok közvetlen jussanak el Istenhez.

A Kabbalista (1938) is elrévült arccal járja az utcákat. Ezüst trombitás angyalok őrködnek fölötte összekapaszkodva. A csúfolódó gyerekek Ámos gyerekkorának negatív emlékei. A visszaemlékezők szerint nemegyszer előfordult, hogy a kaftános vándortanítókat a vásott gyerekek az utcán kigúnyolták.

Anna Margittal Taub Eizik ”csodarabbi ” sírja elôtt Nagykállón

Az Álmodó rabbi című festményen a valóságos és a valóságfeletti a kép előterének síkjában egyetlen egységben olvad össze. A pelikánt és a halat, a két ősi Krisztus-szimbólumot méretben megnövelve egymásba vetíti, mely világosan mutatja, hogy vallása kultúrkörén túl Ámos az egyetemes mítosz világából merít. Ugyanakkor a képen egyszerű jelként az emlékezet vörös izzásában ott van Taub Eizik sírkápolnája is.

Párizsi útja után Ámos Imre az egzisztenciális létét fenyegető támadások ellen nyaranta Szentendrén talál menedéket. Először Vajda Lajos hívta Szentendrére 1935-ben. Nyári kirándulásairól készített néhány akvarellt, temperaképet, de a Duna-parti kisváros szellemi gazdagságát csak 1938-ban fedezi fel. A munkaszolgálatos idők között is nyaranta visszatér Szentendrére, a zaklatott háborús években feleségével együtt itt talál menedéket. Baráti körével, az itt dolgozó festőkkel - Vajda Lajos, Bálint Endre, Barcsay Jenő, Perlott- Csaba Vilmos, Paizs-Goebel Jenő, Czóbel Béla, Diener- Dénes Rudolf, Bán Béla, Kelemen Emil – eleven szellemi légkört teremtettek,mely rövid időre feledtette a személyes létét egyre jobban fenyegető történelmi időket.

1939. július 24-én írja nalójában: „Kinn vagyunk Szentendrén, már ötödik hete. Gyönyörű városka tele készen megkomponált témákkal , öreg, szűk utcácskák, régi kapualjak és gyönyörű omladozó templomok valami furcsa légkörrel telítik ezt a helyet. Estefelé valószínűtlen kékeslilás hegyek és rendkívülien szépek a holdas esték, amikor a hold vakítóan foszforeszkál az ócska templomfalakon. Itteni munkáim mind valami misztikus telítődöttséget kapnak.”

Szeretett városát versben is megörökítette.

Poros Dunapart, álmos fapadok Evezőcsapás csobbanó vízen Hányszor ülték meg magányos szívem, Fáradt testemet.

De estefelé Monostor felett Gongszavú tányér fényes telehold Fátyolsáv fények, csurranó színek Homlokom felett.

Soktornyú város pihenni térek rejtett köveken Forró mellemet nyújtom a szélnek Szentendre felett.

Városképeket fest. A motívumokat egymásba vetíti, a házak falai transzparenssé válnak, a külső és belső terek egymásba olvadnak. Ragyogó színek és tónusok jelenítik meg a formákat. Ámos a béke, a harmónia, a fény városává emeli Szentendrét, mely fölött védőn őrködik a sárga angyal.

A táj és a városkép objektív látványából fokozatosan bontja ki a látomást. Az alkony fényében minden titokzatossá válik. A templomdombról festett Szentendre II. képén a topográfiailag hű városképben az oromfalakkal határolt kert a tehénnel még a falusi élet valóságos része, de a város felett súlytalanul lebegő pópa már a művész látomásának kivetítése. Valóság és képzelet szervesen egyesül a festményen.

1938. március 12-én a német csapatok bevonulnak Ausztriába, Hitler az Anschlusszal a Harmadik Birodalomhoz csatolja az országot, majd a müncheni egyezmény következtében a Szudéta-vidéket. Ámos, aki mindig elhatárolta magát a politikától, így ír naplójában:

„Szörnyű napokat éltünk át az elmúlt hetekben. Egyelőre elcsendesedtek az ijesztő hangok és reméljük, hogy hosszú időre kiküszöbölték a háború gondolatát, vagy talán csak erőgyűjtés a még nagyobb és borzalmasabb háborúhoz? A nyugtalanság nem kedvez a művészetnek.” 14 A napi események hatására drámai erővel vetíti előre a közelgő történelmi katasztrófát. Az Égő zsinagóga (1938) festményén a kállói csodarabbi sírja lángokban áll. A bölcs caddik vérkönnyekkel siratja az égő imaházat. Az ember hasztalan próbálja eloltani a tüzet. Bár a sófárt fújó kakas is megjelenik, de a reményt elnyomja a tűz szimbolikus vörös izzása.

Májusban hatályba lép az első zsidótörvény, mely kimondja, hogy a szellemi szabadfoglalkozású pályák állásainak legfeljebb 20 százalékát foglalhatják el zsidó személyek.

„Olyan lealázó, ahogy visszaszorítanak bennünket csaknem minden foglalkozási ágból.

Valami sötétség fekszik az embereken, mintha meg lennének fertőzve valami bacilussal, ami embertelenül gondolkodóvá teszi őket. Minden baj levezetését az antiszemitizmusban látják és bár tudják a vezetők, hogy ezzel nem oldják meg az égető problémákat, homokba dugott fejjel végigcsinálják az embereket a legszörnyűbb nélkülözésbe kergető törvényeket. Kitaszítanak egy embercsoportot a szabadság, testvériség, egyenlőség nehezen kiharcolt bástyájából.” 15 Ámos Imre naplójában keserűen követi az eseményeket. Feljegyzései lelki vívódásairól, napi megpróbáltatásairól is tanúskodnak.

„Hetek óta nem dolgozom, teljes bizonytalanságban élünk a jövőnket illetőleg. Hónapok óta nem járt nálunk senki vásárlási szándékkal. Átmenetileg, hogy a létminimum meglegyen, kis szalonna reggel-este, valami fűszeresnek festünk kulacsokra ornamentikát, persze filléres dotálás mellett.

Szörnyű lelki tusákon megyek át, éjjelente felébredek, s csaknem mindig azt mondom magamnak „Ember, ébredj fel, el kell menned innen, ez a talaj nem bírja befogadni munkáidat.” 16 1939 márciusában felmondják albérleti szobájukat. Pietista magatartására jellemző, ahogy ezt naplójában dokumentálja.

„Teljesen meglepetésszerűen ért a felmondás, mert mindig pontosan fizettük a lakbért és semmi okuk nem volt a kidobásra. Szomorúan vettük tudomásul a mai morál e megnyilvánulását. Ma, amikor államok, népek vesznek el az erőszak alapján, igazán nem lehet rossz néven venni, ha egy zsidó festőtől elveszi egyetlen birodalmát, a nehezen megtartott munkahelyét egy nem zsidó hivatalnok.” 17 Szűkülnek kiállítási lehetőségei is. „Egyre többször olvassa az ember kritika helyett, hogy ki zsidó, kinek a felesége az és így tovább. Mintha egy művésznek nem a művészete lenne a vallása és a hite, mellyel az emberiséget tiszteli és szolgálja. Súlyos, megpróbáltató idők ezek… Ma csaknem ott tartunk újra, hogy a katakombákba kell elbújnunk, hogy szabadon dolgozhassunk. Mert nem elég, hogy nem lehet szabadon kenyérre váltani munkánkat, szeretnék diktálás után csináltatni olyanok, akik nem értenek hozzá.” 18 A nyári Szentendrén töltött hónapok alkotói munkakedvét Budapestre visszatérve hirtelen törik le a hétköznapi gondok, küzdelmek.

„1939. szeptember 20.

Műtermünk nincs, napok óta nem bírok már ránézni becsomagolt, összezsúfolt dolgaimra. Én, a dolgos munkásember tétlenül ülök egy földszintes szobában, ahol olyan homály van, hogy ha kimegyek, pislogva tudok csak szétnézni, és alig van kilátás megoldásra…”

Nagybátyja megszünteti az eddigi támogatást. Házitanítói állást vállal, hogy a létminimumot előteremthesse.

„Hideg szobában didergek náthásan, már elszoktam négy év meleg lakás után a fázástól.

Most újra megtanulom majd, de nem is az a legfontosabb, mert a hidegben beburkolódzhat az ember melegebb rongyaiba, de nem bírja kizárni azt a dermesztő hideget, amely a tespedés, a közhangulat kulturálatlan emberüldözés miatt rakódik a lelke körül.

Hat hete nem dolgozom. Nincs külön szobánk és nem bírom rászánni magam, hogy a kályha és szekrények mögé elrakott tekercseket elővegyem. Mit is festhetnék, ha lenne is hol?” 19 15.

1940 tavaszán egy sötét, kis szobában rajzolja, majd metszi az Ünnepek 14 darabból álló linóleummetszet-sorozatát. A zsidó ünnepek, a történelmi örömre és gyászra emlékeztető szertartások évezredeken át szabályozták az élet ritmusát, melyben a közösség a múltra emlékezik. Az üldöztetés éveiben Ámos az ünnepek hagyományainak felelevenítésével akar erkölcsi erőt adni.

A hagyományok által alakított szokások ábrázolásában az egyszerű, vallását gyakorló ember hitvilágát fejezi ki. Valamennyi lapon a középpontba állítva, lendületesen megrajzolt kontúrokkal emeli ki a rituális mozdulatú ünneplő férfit.

1940 nyarán még három hónapot töltenek Szentendrén. A Duna-parti városba is betör a háborús készülődés.

„1940. július 10.

Kapunk előtt vezényszavak pattognak, bakancsok csapódnak a földhöz. Manci mondja, hogy itt gyakorlatoznak az öreg katonák. Nem valami megnyugtató, ihletet adó légkör a munkához. Érdekes, hogy véletlenül olyan képen dolgozom, amelyen az önfeledt festő feje fölött ég a ház. Csak a tetőn fekvő és a tűzzel mit sem törődő angyal megnyugtató az egész képen. Mintha a kapunk előtt levő dolgok sugallták volna a képet.”

A felzaklató élmény hatására vagy azzal egy időben születő Festő égő ház előtt festményen a lángoló otthont az összeomlás fenyegeti. A ház előtt dolgozó festő teste görcsösen rándul össze, arca eltorzul a fájdalomtól. De a lángok között fekvő angyal védelmezőn borul a háztetőre. A korai képek pasztelles színvilágával ellentétben Ámos szembeállítja a tűz vörösét és a víz kékjét, a meleg-hideg színek erőteljes kontrasztjával feszíti a festmény belső kohézióját.

A szentendrei hónapok alatt drámai erejű tusrajzokkal tiltakozik a háború ellen.

(Megmérettetett, A művész feleségének arcképe (Múzsa II., Sötét idők) 1940 szeptemberében Ámos Imre megkapja első munkaszolgálatos behívóját a 201/32 sz. századba. Először Nagykátára, majd Balatonaligára viszik.

Fizikai és szellemi körülményeiről tábori levelezőlapjain számol be feleségének.

„1940. október 7. Édesem. Most érkeztünk meg Balatonaligára. Szerettem volna, ha együtt látjuk meg egyszer a Balatont, de ilyen körülmények között nem haragszol, hogy egyedül látom. Nem hiába beszéltek róla annyi szépet, valami csodás zöld, rózsaszín és halványkék hullámok, „ mint a tenger.

A kimerítő fizikai munka után vasárnaponként akvarelleket fest a Balatonról, az őszi kihalt kertekről, utcákról. Aligai akvarelljei primer impressziók a tájról, könnyed ecsetkezeléssel jelzi a formákat. Az égen a felhők éppoly fontos motívumai, mint az alkony fényében az aranysárga parti sétány vagy a bíborban izzó napkorong.

Miközben vasúti talpfákkal síneket épít, a festés rövid időre feledteti kiszolgáltatottságát.

A lírai balatoni képek az erőltetett menetek szüneteiben születtek.

„Elnyúlva fekszem egy kis „séta” után. Húsz kilométer büntetőmenet volt. ...Egész nap mentünk, két faluba és vissza. Közben néhány feküdj.” 20

Ámos szigorú önfegyelemmel tűri a megpróbáltatásokat. Csak egyetlen, 1940. november 11-én feleségéhez írt levélben tárja fel vágyódását, szorongását a jövőtől.

„…kevés időm nagyobbik részét a kettőnk körüli gondolataim töltik ki, szeretnék optimista lenni, de ide is eljutnak viharos hírek és nehezen tudom a magam szempontjából megnyugtatónak látni a mai helyzetet, de Édesem, bízzunk a sorsunkat irányító lelkek pártfogásában, és hiszem, hogy lesznek még együtt szép és nyugodt napjaink is. Egyedüllétemben (mert ezt a sok embert körülöttem nem is érzem) csak a Veled való csöndes beszélgetések, melyek csaknem fizikailag is megnyilvánulnak – nyújtanak megnyugvást, hiszen akárhogy igyekszem illeszkedni, mégsem bírom elfelejteni a munkaasztaltól való elrángatást és igen nehezemre esik, hogy eldurvult kezeimet lássam olyan munka után, melynek semmi komoly értelme, bármilyen igyekezettel is csinálom.”

1941. január 12-én így emlékszik vissza a munkaszolgálatra: „1940. december 13-án érkeztem vissza a munkaszolgálatból. Csaknem három hónapot töltöttem el kemény fizikai munkával. Ujjaim reggelente még most is fájnak. Nem tudom, nem szereztem-e reumát a hideg vagonok tologatásánál és a vassínek, talpfák emelésénél. Én nem vagyok kényes, falusi gyerek voltam, megszoktam az ásó, lapát forgatását, ha nem is olyan mértékben, mint ott kellett. …Csak az volt számomra elszomorító, hogy elvettük a kubikusok kenyerét és ugyanakkor el kellett hagynom a palettámat és ecsetjeimet, és nem hiszem, hogy többet szolgáltam volna fizikai munkával a hazának – pedig soha nem húztam ki magam –, mint a piktúrával.”

1941 januárjában a Hunyadi tér 3. III. 5.-ben vesznek ki egy világos szobát, amit műteremnek is használnak. Ámos újult erővel dolgozik. A fasizmus iszonyú erőivel szemben számára az egyetlen lehetséges magatartás: a szellemi ellenállás, tiltakozás a művekkel. Rajzaiban, festményeiben prófétai erővel figyelmeztet. Stílusa a háború kitörésének évében, a történelem közvetlen hatására változik meg. A válságos időkben a szimbólumokban talál rá a mitikus, ősi forrásra, hogy hazája és Európa drámáját kifejezze. A szimbólumok szűkszavúságával és egyértelműségével tesz tanúságot a világról és önmagáról, a morális értékek széthullásáról, a történelemnek kiszolgáltatott ember magányáról, megalázottságáról, szorongásairól és félelmeiről, a számkivetettség belső nyugtalanságáról.

Megváltoznak kifejezőeszközei. Erőteljes kontúrokkal határolja a formákat. Korai festményeinek ezüstös, pasztelles tónusaival szemben erős intenzitású színeket, izzóvöröset, kéket használ.

Gyakran festi le önmagát. Az önarckép számára feltárulkozás, énfelmutatás. Szimbolikus jelentésű motívumokkal veszi körül magát: álomlátó, mítoszteremtő énjét hangsúlyozza.

A festő, 1939 kompozíciójána középpontjába helyezett gyertya és a béke fehér galambja a megtisztult új kor eljövetelét hirdeti. A kép intenzív színellentétekre épül: az ég irizáló kobaldja mélyebb árnyalatban tér vissza a festő arcán, az ablakban és a terítőn. A hideg és meleg színellentétek nem különülnek el egymástól, minden felületet megtör az adott szín ellentétpárjával.

Kettős portrékban örökíti meg feleségéhez fűződő szerelmét, összetartozásukat.

A Hajnalvárás (1939) című képen a békésen alvó festőpár mögött a kakas és a kizöldellő ág a remélt jövőt, a szabad emberi világ eljövetelét köszönti.

Víziórendszerének egyik legjellemzőbb visszatérő képi jele az angyal.

„Ime én angyalt bocsátok el te előtted, hogy megőrizzen téged és bévigyen arra a helyre, amelyet elkészítettem neked” – (Mózes II. könyve 23, 20) - szól Isten Mózeshez a Bibliában. Ámos festészetében az angyal, a titkok ismerője, az ember védelmét inkarnálja. Festményein és rajzain őrzi, óvja a művész életét. (Önarckép angyallal, 1938, Angyalos óra, 1938, Sárga angyal, 1939, Angyal kenyérrel, 1940, A festő és múzsája, 1941, Mi ketten, 1941) Ámos festészetében az angyalnak éppoly fontos szerepe van, mint sorstársának, Radnóti Miklósnak költészetében. „Eddig úgy ült szívemben a sok rejtett harag, mint alma magházában a négerbarna mag, s tudtam, hogy egy angyal kísér, kezében kard van, mögöttem jár, vigyáz reám s megvéd, ha kell a bajban.”22 Rövid alkotóperiódusát áprilisban újabb munkaszolgálatos behívó szakítja meg. Három hónapig Aszód, Zombor, Stopár, Hercegszántó, Bezda, Bereg, Doroszló mentén útépítő osztagban dolgozik.

„Most egy utat építünk… állni reggel hattól este 8-ig kis megszakításokkal éppen elég. …Nagyon jólesne már rendes ágyban aludni, nem csupasz szalmán.” 23 Június végén szerelik le. Nyáron Szentendrén dolgozik. Ősszel folytatja a Sötét idők-sorozatát. Az 1938-44 között készült több festményből álló sorozatban drámai erővel fogalmazza meg történelmi látomásait. Apokaliptikus vízióiban a háború pusztításait, az ember fenyegetettségét vetíti elénk. Visszatérő motívuma a csonka fa. A zsidó és keresztény hagyományokban a fa az élet, a jó, a tudás jelképe. Ámos víziórendszerében a lombjától megfosztott fa az erőszakkal elpusztított világ tragikus szimbóluma.

A Háború (1942) olajképének középpontjában a festőpárt durva kötél láncolja a csonka fa törzséhez. A földön felhalmozott égő fahasábok a lángba borult Európát, a síró, magányos nőalak a gyászoló utókort jelképezi. De a fa jobb oldali ágán egy kis hajtás nő, a festő reményének, az új világ eljövetelének jeleként.

1942 márciusában Anna Margittal közösen kiállítást rendez grafikáiból Hunyadi téri műtermükben. „Ámos Imre grafikái határozott erkölcsi és egyben világnézeti magatartást tükröznek – írja Bálint Endre a Népszava 1942. április 25-i számában. A mának rettenetes igézetében készültek, a félelem és tiltakozás néha összeolvadó érzéseire utalnak olyanynyira, hogy gyakran a forma elveszti jelentőségét az asszociáló utalások hieroglifáiban.”

Március 15-én a Történelmi Emlékbizottság nagyszabású antifasiszta tüntetést szervez a Petőfi-szobornál. A Szociáldemokrata Párt Szabadság és Nép címmel freskópályázatot ír ki, melyre Ámos Imre két olajképet fest Háború és Béke címmel. A festményeket már csak Anna Margit vihette be a kiállításra, mert Ámost március 18-án ismét munkaszolgálatra hívták.24 22. Radnóti Miklós: Sem emlék, sem varázslat, 1944.

Ámos hadtestét április elején Ukrajnába, az orosz frontra vezérlik, ahonnan tizennégy hónapig nem térhetett vissza.

A szellemi és fizikai megpróbáltatásokon, haláltusán a hazatérés reménye és emberi hite segíti át.

Korosztenben kétoldali tüdőgyulladást, majd flekktífuszt kap. Egy ukrán parasztház földes szobájában szalmán fekszik napokon át élet-halál közt. Március 20-án levelet ír feleségének, amit nem küld el.

„Néhány nap óta igen magas lázzal fetrengek szállásomon. A sok gyaloglás a lábamat megtámadta… Napi imádságom, hogy engedje meg az Úristen, hogy hazakerülhessek, leborulhassak anyám sírjánál és megcsókolhassam kedvesem arcát… Édesem, tudod kívánságomat. Képeimet lassanként értékesíted, egy nagy retrospektív kiállítás, ha majd béke lesz és szép nyugodt spiritiszta élet… Kedvesem, alig bírom fogni a ceruzát… Édes szerelmem, nekünk nagyon sok szép napot adott az Isten, de remélem még ad is.

Csókol Imre.”

Elsodort papírhulladékra, nyírfakéregre rajzol, verseket ír. Rajzait egy csendőr megsemmisíti.

1943. június 24-én, 14 hónap után, végre leszerelik és hazatérhet. Verseit, feljegyzéseit sikerül hazahoznia 1943-ban. Ámos a 85 verset, pár négyzetcentiméternyi papírdarabokra írt ceruzasorokat, a haldoklókról remegő kézzel felvázolt rajzokat később egy kockás füzetbe ragasztja be.

„Kínos-keserves napok emléke maradt bennem, egy téli visszavonulás úttalan utakon, 35-40 fokos hidegben… Azt hiszem, hogy Isten segítségén kívül az a mérhetetlen vágy segített át a betegségen, hogy nagyon haza akartam jutni a feleségemhez.” 25 „Nehezen tudok visszajutnom önmagamhoz. Úgy nézem munkáimat, mint egy idegen.

Az átélt napok alatt megvilágosodott számomra sok minden, amit addig fontosnak tartottam, jelentéktelenné zsugorodott, és amit azelőtt figyelemre sem méltattam, jelentőséget nyert. Egyelőre grafikákat csinálok, a fekete-fehér, a maga szűkszavúságával teljesen kifejezik mostani érzéseimet”- írja 1943. augusztus 20-án naplójában. Ámos megrendítő erejű grafikákban emlékezik az orosz frontra. Az Ukrán emlék tusrajzán az eltorzult arcú katona mellét lángoló fahasábok égetik, a faház a távoli otthon békéjét idézi. A Korosztenyi vízióban látomások, valóság és vágyak vetülnek egymásba.

A háború iszonyatának átélt pillanatait rögzíti a Menekülők, a Halál rajzain és a Lótetem című akvarelleken. Három változatot is készít az ember hűséges társának haláláról. A vergődő állat agóniája, kétségbeesett hánykolódása szenvedélyes tiltakozás a világ pusztítása ellen. A menekülő katonák rettenettel néznek vissza az áldozatra.

A jövő teljes bizonytalanságának tudata közben Ámos megszállottan dolgozik. Megrázó élményeit, szorongásait, vívódásait, de olykor a jobb jövőbe vetett hitét is balladai tömörségű rajzain, temperaképein fejezi ki. Ezekben a grafikákban az emberi értékek pusztulását féltő, ugyanakkor az igazság és béke győzelmében hívő humanista szólal meg. Szimbolikus jelekből alakítja kompozícióit. Megszűnik a tér-idő egysége, a tárgyak kiválnak megszokott környezetükből, új összefüggéseikben újabb és újabb jelentéstartalommal gazdagodnak.

Rajzain a „Jó” és a „Rossz” harcol egymással. A pusztulás, a fasizmus, a háború képi jelei: a tűz, kés, bárd, balta, fűrész, csizma, bakancs, kötél, démon, szörny, a kígyó ellentétpárjaiként mutatja fel az összeölelkező emberpár, a virág, leveles ág, kenyér, könyv, galamb, hegedű, védelmező angyal, otthon motívumait, melyeket a jövővárás jelképei – az új életet jelző kakas, a titkokat nyitó kulcs, az igazságot felfedő tükör, a földet az éggel összekötő létra, a gonoszt elűző gyertya fénye egészítenek ki, csak néhányat említve a festő rendkívül gazdag jelképei közül. Ámos művészi ereje a szimbólumok társításában rejlik. Jelet jellel úgy fűz össze, hogy az általuk megnyilvánuló jelentés még hatékonyabban, még erőteljesebben érvényesüljön.

Az egymástól látszólag távol eső, az élet realitásában nem együtt szereplő motívumok asszociatív társítással szimultán vetülnek egymásra új formai minőséget létrehozva.

A rajzokban az érzelem és az értelem tudatosan egyesül. A festő a humánum értékeit félti, a múlt örökségét menti, a Bibliát forrásként használja, megálmodja a szabad jövőt, miközben megsokszorozódott energiával tiltakozik az erőszak ellen.

1944 március 19-én Hitler csapatai megszállják Magyarországot. Ámos 1944. március 21-én így ír naplójában: „Súlyos napok, nehéz megpróbáltatások várnak ránk. A háború elérte a magyar földet.

Nem tudhatjuk, mi lesz. Bízzunk Istenben és erős lélekkel, tiszta lelkiismerettel nézzünk a dolgok elébe. Mi eddig is a tőlünk telhetőt megtettük a hazáért és az emberségünkért.

Hiszem, hogy megpróbáltatásaink megtisztítják a lelkünket, és bármi történjék is velünk, állítom, hogy őszinte, becsületes életet éltünk. Úgy is, mint művész, úgy is mint ember.

Adja Isten, hogy még folytathassam feljegyzéseimet békességgel, az emberi lelkek teljes megnyugvása után.” Ámos nem akarja tudomásul venni veszendő szabadságát. Kiállításokon vesz részt. 26 1944 áprilisában 12 nagyméretű tusrajzot készít az Apokalipszisról. János apostol vízióját azonosítja saját korával.

„Amint megfordultam hét arany gyertyatartót láttam, a hét arany gyertyatartó között pedig ember Fiához hasonlót, bokáig érő ruhába öltözve, mellén arany övvel övezve. Feje és haja fehér volt, mint a hófehér gyapjú, szeme, mint a lobogó tűz, lába, mint kemencében izzó sárga réz, hangja, mint a nagyvizek zúgása. Jobbjában hét csillagot tartott, szájából hegyes kard tört elő, arca pedig olyan volt, mint a teljes fényében ragyogó nap.” 27 János, az apokalipszis szerzője Kr. u. 95 körül jegyezte le látomásait Pátmosz szigetén száműzetésében. Domitianus császár keresztényüldözése ellen lázadt, művével a hét kis-ázsiai egyházat akarta kitartásra, hitre, állhatatosságra buzdítani. Ámos sorozatában azonosul a világkatasztrófát megélő Jánossal. Ő is éppúgy küzd a történelem démonaival. Személyes zaklatottsággal vesz részt a vízióban.

Ámos Imre miközben naplójában, verseiben, leveleiben saját halálának közelségét sejti, az Apokalipszisban az igazság eljövetelét hirdeti.

„Akkor új eget és új földet láttam… Jeruzsálem leszállt a mennyből, Istentől… Díszes volt, mint a vőlegényének felékesített menyasszony…tündökölt, mint a drágakő.”

Kánaán földjét Ámos a szentendrei kálváriával azonosítja. A kapuk szárnyai nyitva állnak, hogy mindenkit befogadjanak. A kálvária keresztjét az élet fája helyettesíti. Ágai roskadnak a gyümölcstől, Ámos jövővárásának jeleként.

Miközben Ámos a Bibliát illusztrálja, szülővárosának zsidó lakosait, köztük nagybátyját, nagynénjét és féltestvéreit elhurcolják. Ámost mélyen megrázza rokonainak, kállói barátainak sorsa. Szenvedéseit a megfeszített Krisztushoz méri. Szörnyű idők tusrajzán töviskoszorút helyez saját fejére, kezét még fohászra kulcsolja, tekintetével fájdalmasan búcsúzik az élettől.

1944. május végén újra munkaszolgálatra hívják. Jászberényben, majd Szolnokon dolgozik a vasútnál. Postai levelezőlapjai, melyeket feleségének küld, semmit nem árulnak el helyzetéről. Az előre nyomtatott tábori lapokra: „Egészséges vagyok és jól érzem magam”, a munkaszolgálatosok kézzel nem írhattak.

Augusztusban vásárol egy 60 lapos spirálfüzetet, melybe 45 teljes és egy fél lapon kék tintával rajzol. A Szolnoki vázlatkönyv Ámos festészetének epilógusa.

A lágerlakók megaláztatásai közben Ámos az otthon békéjét, szerelmét idézi fel. Ezek az erőltetett menetek között készült rajzok vallomások a társról. A vágyott harmóniát azonban zaklatott látomások, a háború képei szakítják meg.

János Apokalipszisének angyala, kivont karddal száguld a föld felett, ítélkezik. Ámos égő városok, a halál pusztítása között fogalmazza meg a művész küldetését. Üzenet című rajza egyik megrendítő utolsó önarcképe. A jövőbe néző férfit egy méreteiben megnövelt emberi kéz védelmezi, két ujja között tartja a békét hirdető, törékeny leveles ágat.

Krisztushoz fordul. A két lator között megfeszített Jézus agóniája saját szenvedésének előrevetítése. A Bibliát egyértelműen aktualizálja: a kereszt fájába csapott baltában ott a horogkereszt. Egy másik rajzán a siratók és a halott tetem mögött egy ökölbe szorított férfikéz a kereszt felmutatásával fenyegeti meg a gyilkosokat.

1944 októberében Ámos Imrét Budapestre szállították. Miközben a rádió Szálasi esküjét harsogta, Anna Margit utoljára találkozott Ámossal a Lehel úti kaszárnya udvarán. Ekkor adta át feleségének a kockás füzetet, a szolnoki munkaszolgálat alatt készített utolsó ceruzarajzokkal.

Ámost az osztrák határhoz vitték. Ott elénekeltették századával a Himnuszt, majd német kézre adták őket. Az ohrdrufi koncentrációs táborból soha nem tért vissza. Halála tragikus mementó maradt napjainkig. Élete utolsó pillanatáig „jeleket írt az égre”. A halál biztos tudatában is bízott a megtisztuló emberben, várta a hittel teli új kor eljövetelét. Naplójának utolsó soraiban a népével „testvériesülő” művész végső vágya szólal meg:

„Mikor ér el az ember odáig, hogy erőszak és gyilkosság nélkül igaz szeretetben élhessen egymás mellett? Gyűlölködés nélkül, megbecsülve a békét szeretőket és új útra térítve a rossz befolyástól eltévelyedett lelkeket?”

IMRE ÁMOS - Painter of the Apocalypse Inter arma silent musae – Muses fall silent in war... The life and work of Imre Ámos stand in strong contradiction of this two-thousand-year-old saying. This painter’s insistence on tradition, reflection on the past and introspective view saw his art blossom during the Second World War. Living as he did within the realm of myth and dream, it was the outbreak of global war that saw his instinctive reaction grow into a stronger sense of moral responsibility. And as fascism savaged his fellow humans with increasing openness, the faith and prophetic power of his lyrical vison grew stronger than ever before. Ámos engaged with the era and the fate of his fellow man.

Much like his biblical forefathers, he remained devoted to his calling and, as with Isiah, the Lord also touched his lips with burning cinders. But peace in Arcadia became increasingly distant as this inspired painter, typically so unwilling to engage with social issues and more intrigued by the beauty of everyday life, found himself swept up by the tide of history as he was forced to face the aggression of the age. And so, he abandoned his exploration of aesthetic representation and questions of composition and instead turned his burning attention to the essential ethical questions of the time.

This, in turn, saw his style find new and frightening form in his use of universal symbols in his pictorial interpretation of the dance of death that waltzed across Europe.

Despite working in incredibly testing circumstances, his paintings and diary entries clearly show this man’s ethos. But, by this stage, Europe was no longer able to take warning at his “signs from above” as he struggled on alone on battle fronts and confined in camps, continuing to create and work until the very end. The fragile beauty of his sketches scribbled whilst on labour service not only bear witness to the atrocities of war but also force the viewer to reflect. His prophetic faith and strength seen through the eyes of the victims of war and his works so devoted to the power of good over evil remain as a lesson to us all.

Imre Ámos, originally named Imre Ungár, was born in the far north of Hungary, in the small town of Nagykálló, far away from Budapest, on December 7, 1907. His father died when he was seven, and his mother moved into her father’s house with two children. His grandfather, Adolf Liszer, was a teacher and Talmudist, who did not raise him according to strict orthodox rules. As well as the Kabbala and the Torah, and the legends of Eizik Taub, he also told his grandson about Christ and the Bible. The myths and faith of the land of the miracle rabbis shaped his whole life.

Between the world wars, a unique Hassidic peasant culture blossomed on the banks of the Tisza and Bodrog rivers. The founding father of this movement was a contemporary visionary by the name of Israel Baal Sem Tov, whose teachings provided hope to simple peasant folk after the horrors of the pogroms. This new religious movement arrived from Galicia to the Carpathian Basin in the 18th century, where it soon began to spread.

In contrast with the Hassidim’s strict insistence on religious rules, this new direction sought rather to focus on the importance of a generous spirit and a pure heart. It proclaimed tangible interaction between God and man.

Shepherds and farmers declared that God was to be found in all earthly things, and every man should be held responsible for his own actions. Man’s primary goal was to bring joy to others and seek inner harmony. They believed that, as in legends, good always defeated evil. They discovered the beauty of life. They celebrated the Lord God in work, dance and holy praise.

Legends of the miracle rabbis spread far and wide. Pilgrims came to their graves from far-off lands, and appealed for help with their prayers. They especially honoured Eizek Taub, the shepherd boy turned academic, the Nagykálló tzadik, the teller of truth.

Shepherds, ploughmen, carters, shopkeepers all believed that the tzadik would make a miracle after his death. Childless couples appealed to him for fertility. They wrote their wishes on papers and threw them into his grave.

In Hassid legends, as in Ámos’ later works, moments of everyday life merge with miracle, where life and dreams sit alongside one another in harmonious coexistence. The figure of the “reflecting” tzadik acted as inspiration for many of Ámos’ paintings. (Dreaming Rabbi, Old Church Warden Telling Tales to Children, Kabbalist) His childhood and his home in Nagykálló kept Ámos safe from all forms of disturbing influence. As well as a religious faith, it also gave him faith in people and a strong moral code.

On completing school, Imre Ámos moves to Budapest in 1925, where he works at the Láng Machine Works as a silverer and painter. Then, in 1927, he does as his family asks and enrols at technical university in Budapest, where he studies engineering for two years until 1929, when his childhood dream is realised and he is accepted at art college. His teacher, Gyula Rudnay, soon recognises the young Ámos’ talent.

His first linoleum prints (Blind Organ-Grinder, On the Bridge, The Docker, 1929) not only hold a strong sense of real space and time, but also depict the lives of those living on the periphery of accepted society.

In 1930, he creates his engraving River Wash Away Our Sins that depicts the Taschlich ceremony. On the afternoon of Rosh Hashanah, the faithful Jews go down to the local river. They face the river and repeat the words of the prophet Micah, while they cast breadcrumbs into the water to symbolise liberation from their sins. „You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”

He enrolls at art college as Imre Ungár, but adopts the name of Ámos from 1929. He signs his early works with the initials „UAI”. He consciously chooses the name of the first biblical prophet, and undertakes his prophetic calling.

He meets Margit Anna, in 1931, a student of the painter János Vaszary, and the two become friends and partners for life. She becomes a constant model for his paintings and drawings.

He goes back to his home town every summer. He relives the unfettered days of his youth. He paints self-portraits and portraits of his family. He always depicts his subjects in familiar surroundings with a treasured belonging.

His early works reflect a recognisable influence by Nabik, Bonnard, József Rippl-Rónai and Róbert Berény. But while his predecessors chose to concentrate on decorative representation and sensual effect, Ámos prefers to explore the complexities of the psyche. He strives to free himself from material restraints and consciously contrives to reduce colour.

His diary entries show his strong sense of identification with artists such as Chagall, Csontváry and Gulácsy and it is his painterly view and his sensitivity to the visionary world of dreams and all things esoteric that link him so to these masters of their art.

In 1932, he is a second-year student when he paints his large-scale work, Waiting for a Miracle, that is a search for direction. The blindfolded painter, with his spouse behind him, and the maestro scanning the horizon are not only waiting for a miracle but also trying to avoid impending doom.

In August 1934, he makes 30 lino prints about the loneliness of the poor man made homeless in the city. In his series of works entitled From Water to Water we can clearly see the experiences of the young painter far from home. The series shows the concentrated conflict between modern city life and the loneliness of a natural soul from the country.

Imre Ámos graduates from Budapest College of Art in 1934. From 1931 onwards he takes part in the Spring Exhibition of Works by Young Artists staged annually as part of the Szinyei Society National Salon and goes on to win the Szinyei Prize in 1934.

The Budapest Museum of Fine Arts purchases a picture from him and the following year sees him exhibit 37 paintings at the CLII group exhibition at the Ernst Museum that is greeted with critical acclaim by the professional press and the art world at large.

„Undoubtedly strong talent with great perspective and promise.” 1 „Although this is his first exhibition at the Szinyei Merse Society Spring Salon, he caused a stir with his pastel, dreamy, fresco-like paintings. He has gone on to dream of his faded figures from misty visions. His world is exceptional and as light as a whisper. His colours ripple in the background. This young poet presents a new world awaiting redemption that comes to life on the canvas. The debut of an artist with deep feeling in search of independent forms.” 2 One of the most outstanding paintings in the exhibition is Women in the Riverbank (1935). „...a multitude of folk waiting for the moving of the water. For an angel went down at a certain time into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.” 3 Ámos’ paintings don not show invalids, but young girls suffering from loneliness of the soul and the aged sick waiting for a miracle, for their invisible wounds to be healed and for spiritual rebirth. And they have been waiting for all time.

It is as if he throws a thin veil over their faces that prevents us from entering into their inner being. They carry their past and present inside themselves. They give themselves over to the moment to rise up out of the duties of their lives. His painting is typified by faint, reserved tones, subdued colours and a conscious reduction of palette. He loads the alla prima surface of the canvas with layers of colour and then breaks this with white.

His painting entitled The Saints are Deaf (1935) is inspired by memories of his childhood and the town of his birth. Instead of traditional double portraits, he depicts himself with his mother outside the burial chapel of Taub Eizik. The figure of his dead mother evokes the cultic objects of his faith: he gives emphasis to the key that hides secrets.

He consciously condenses symbols in real space: the spiritual attributes of the old gravestone in front of Eizik Taub’s mausoleum and the biblical cockerel signalling dawn.

Imre Ámos’ early paintings create a pure, ideal world that he longed for. Spectacle is rendered in harmony with space, where real experience merges with myth and universal sensations, with the inclusion of the occasional emblematic symbol. The painter steps beyond primary sensualism. Tangible materiality combines with the abstract nature of spiritual expression.

He marries the painter Margit Anna in 1935. They live in a rented room that acts as their studio. They go without a great deal, but their poverty is outshone by their love and their faith in art.

„We lived in extreme poverty. We were given breakfast of coffee and bread in a city milk bar. Then we went home and worked like navvies. Every day was the same. We painted back to back to not disturb the other. While our room was cold, we suffered a great deal.

We went to the canteen at noon. And we secretly took bread from here to eat for our supper. We walked everywhere to avoid buying a tram ticket.” 4 Imre Ámos begins to keep a diary in a little checkered notebook on December 7, 1935.

This diary goes on to be the most authentic record of his life in which he openly lays down not only the trials and tribulations of everyday existence but his personal thoughts on his faith.

“I have turned 28 today. Even I don’t know why I record the everyday events of my life. I try to express my message through my paintings. All I have achieved before colleagues and the public is through my work. I would like to live out my life in a state of contentment, and follow the path that is emerging before me, with my companion for life, who is a source of constant joy and love to me.” 5 Sometimes he stops writing for several months and even years, while other times he eagerly scribbles page after page of his impressions and life experiences. The diary clearly demonstrates that painting completely filled his life.

“We do nothing more for the achieved results other than to work from internal necessity with honesty, we do not involve ourselves in politics, if we have money, we buy material, and if we exhibit, it is not to push ourselves forward but because our material is good and we work enough.” 6 While he struggles with everyday challenges, he becomes increasingly interested in expanding the dimensions of reality and the secret meaning of objects.

„December 21, 1935.

I spent a few days in my home town. As I looked at the old furniture, my grandfather’s bookshelf, pipe wrack, old candlesticks and mirrors, they each inspired a painting in me.

An object often used to inspire me to paint. Each has its own atmosphere and is linked to my memories. I am again interested in projecting those memories. I call this ‚associative expressionism’.

I think the only way to give something new is to honestly show what you see inside.

I strive to project emotions that are mine and yet still belong to everyone. I do not want to reproduce in paint, I want to fill the surface of my paintings with memories associated with objects, so that the spiritual content is the plus that distinguishes them from existing paintings. I would like to imbue everything I create with a certain spiritual nature.” Ámos becomes increasingly interested in painting memories and dreams. In In Front of My Great-grandmother’s Mirror we see ancestors appear as floating apparitions suggesting the strength of family through generations and the eternal continuity of life.

“It is not enough to paint objects, figures or landscapes as simple motifs, but we have to show the soul of these dead and living objects and their influence on their surroundings, projected through the subjective vision of the painter. Each object initiates the free association of memories.” 7 He becomes increasingly interested in the pictorial projection of memory and dream. In his paintings, the dream is the manifestation of desires. The subconscious does not break down into fragments. Reality and dreams come together in such a way that reality is elevated to a mythical level. For him, the freedom of dreams compared to the seemingly fixed realities of the woken state represent true freedom and a world in which there are no constraints.

The painter is not only the main character of his dreams but also their director. Unlike the surrealist masters, Ámos never switches off consciousness and emotion that link associations together. His paintings depict dreams in real-life situations, the associative content of which expands the painting’s pictorial message.

Green Divan (1935) shows a man lying on a divan as he dreams of a prophet reading from the book of knowledge and law. He uses movement of the real figure to bring the supernatural phenomenon of dream into a real space. Dream About the Bear Dancer (1937) shows the playfully grotesque figure of the village fair. The viewer is given a sense of the complexity of the dream world in his work Dream in which he brings together splintered fragments of contradictory mood. Now the painter’s dream is no longer a projection of his desires. The objects in the room still exude a sense of home and stately, while ominous symbols of danger appear outside the window in the world beyond. Ámos binds himself. Christ’s crown of thorns on his head appears as a prophetic vision of his future persecution.

He and his wife are regularly visitors to the Museum of Fine Arts Library, where he studies the works of Matisse, Emil Nolde and Chagall. He even creates a pencil sketch based on a picture of Chagall he finds in a journal, with whom he shared a strikingly similar worldview.

„October 7, 1937.

With superhuman effort we have eventually managed to sell a couple of paintings, and so we had a little money, we have come to the World Expo. We found accommodation at a scout hostel; a small room in Passy. First impressions of Paris are that we were born here and want to die here. The sights are spectacular. Everything here is as large as life, and you are greeted with art at every turn. The exhibition here is a collection of the best the world has to offer.” Ámos paints little in Paris, and prefers to sketch and collect impressions. He paints harmonious, lyrical pictures of Paris streets. He captures their vitality and sensual beauty that he mixes with dream scenes. His colours reflect those rare moments of joy: with pinks and ochre struck through with bright-white turquoise and violet.

The highlight of his time in Paris is his meeting with Chagall.

„October 4, 1937.

We have just returned from meeting Chagall. I am speechless with joy that we could see and speak in person to the man we have grown to love through his paintings. He is an appealing figure. He wore a yellow and black striped chemise, a reddish shirt, grey woollen trousers. His hair was tousled, and he greeted us with bright crooked eyes and a smile as he took us into a room filled with paintings each more beautiful than the last. He loved what we showed him and he studied the sketches and paintings.

I could see that he was captivated by what he saw. He said that many of them were exceptional. He found fault with the colour and construction of a couple. ‚Sie müssen in Paris leben und arbeiten.’ ‚You must live and work in Paris,’ he said. We are still very young. Our inner interpretation is strong. And he can say nothing against our expression. If we wish to work in Paris for a longer time, it is quite clear to us what is missing here and there. He was very kind. Before, we only admired him from afar, but now we shook his hand. When we left, he said he was delighted that Hungary provided such talented youth.”

Imre Ámos’ shared Eastern European roots, upbringing, religion and introspective hunger for the truth attracted him to Chagall. Their artwork contains several shared motifs. Their fates, faiths, ars poetica and visions were fed from identical sources. Despite differing settings, religion’s power to create community and the mystical experience of everyday life and celebrations filled with prayers and rituals gave them a shared moral fibre.

Their shared sensitivity to all things mystical means that they both approach the world from an emotional angle. And while the artists of Europe are preoccupied by avantgarde attempts to deconstruct form, Chagall and Ámos create their own visionary worlds full of symbolic meaning that brings richness and depth to mortal human existence.

The works of these two painters appear initially similar due to their use of ancient motifs and symbols, but, on closer inspection, it is clear that Chagall combines pagan joy with the inner ecstasy and euphoria experienced in nature, while Ámos does not recognise the explosive dynamism of hedonistic delight. Chagall combines the mystery on love and unstoppable passion, while Ámos’ paintings lack any aspect of animalistic overtness as he prefers to withdraw and hide his inner emotions from the outside.

Chagall likes to play and he knows how to play. He often creates grotesque situations and he himself laughs at the strangeness of the world through his pictures. Ámos’ art, on the other hand, is purely of emotional conception and is rarely able to escape existential struggles and the torturous penury of poverty.

Chagall’s world of form is also influenced by cubism. He is more daring in his deconstruction of space and is able to swap “up” with “down”. His paintings bring together fairy-tale spaces where sensual experiences are no longer valid and where heaven and earth and the real and the surreal come together in a magical space to create a dynamic vision. The present, past and future overlap. Ámos also opens up the present time dimension but he does not accelerate it but rather seeks to draw strength from the archetypal collective myth of the past.

Over and above his meeting with Chagall, Ámos is also greatly inspired by his visit to the Spanish pavilion at the World Expo. The main piece in the exhibition is Picasso’s Guernica: a shockingly strong protest against the onslaught of fascism. 8 Imre Ámos and Margit Anna spend three months in Paris.

„We could not stay. Our money ran out so we were forced to come home. This surprised many of our friends. We were aliens there. All was so uncertain, and it was impossible to know what was happening in the world. They all encouraged us to stay with fine words but no one thought to help us. We decided to return to Budapest because we are at home there. By the time we came home, the world was dancing in a razor’s edge.”

– Margit Anna recalls. 9 On returning home, Ámos turns even more strongly to the Hassid tradition in Nagykálló and recollections of his religious upbringing. A recurring element in his work is the Hassid world of Nagykalló, with its dreaming rabbis, old temple servants and the ethical figures of the Old Testament. The miracle rabbi, the wisdom of the elders, the candle of Friday nights, the prayers of a mother all mix and mingle with the heat of summer streets, and the long shadows of evening. His projection of memories of dream and myth seek new paths of spirit and form. Ámos was familiar with the search for spiritual enrichment and liberation from the constraints of the material world from Hassid legend represented by miracle rabbis and dreaming kabbalist. Old Temple Servant Telling Tales to Children (1938) shows children sitting enthralled by tales recounted by a figure sitting in an armchair. Ámos emphasises the form of the shofar in the background that is said to open up the sky so that prayers may pass directly to God. The kabbalist roams the streets in a trance. His tired body is on the ground but his soul is filled with heavenly light. Angels with silver trumpets stand guard above him. And the people in the street cannot see the light in his soul. All they see is the foolish figure of an old kabbalist.

In Dreaming Rabbi, Ámos brings the natural and supernatural together in the foreground of his painting. He superimposes enlarged images of a pelican and a fish and this combination of such ancients symbolic resonations of Christ shows that Ámos is willing to reach beyond his own religious realm and seek inspiration and support from the universal world of myth. At the same time, the painting also shows the glowing form of Taub Eizik’s mausoleum that sits as a simple symbol.

After returning from Paris, Imre Ámos finds refuge from threatening attacks by spending his summers in Szentendre. Lajos Vajda first invited Ámos to Szentendre in 1935.

„July 24, 1939.

We are out in Szentendre for the fifth week now. This picturesque town is crammed with composed themes, narrow old streets, ancient doorways and beautiful crumbling churches. This place has a peculiar atmosphere. Then in the evening, the hills are an unlikely purple and the moonlit nights are so beautiful, when the moon floods crumbling churches in phosphorescence. The work I do here all seems to gain mystical content.”

He writes this poem to describe the town he loves so very much.

„Dusty Danube, sleepy benches, Rowers rowing on running river.

So many times mended, my lonely heart, My body of tired bones.

But as evening falls over Monostor, The moon a gong up above.

Veiled beams of light, Streaming colours o’er my head.

Towered town, Slumbering squares on hidden stones.

I lift my breast to the winds, The winds that blow through Szentendre.”

He paints town scenes. He superimposes motifs on one another; house walls become transparent, and inner and outer spaces merge. His forms are brought to life by glorious colour and tone. Ámos makes Szentendre a town of peace, harmony and light, protected from above by a golden angel.

The objective spectacle of landscape and the townscape sit in complementary contrast to create a visionary scene. All is made to appear more mystical in the half light of dusk.

Painted from the top of a hill, Szentendre II. shows a true topographical depiction of the town below with cows grazing and typical elements of provincial life, but Ámos places a priest floating weightlessly above the town below and so brings reality and vision together in a single composition.

German troops move into Austria on March 12, 1938. Hitler annexes the country to the Third Reich with the Anschluss, then after the Munich Agreement, it is followed

by Sudetenland. Ámos, who always turned away from politics, writes the following in his diary. „Recent days have been deplorable. The frightening noises have grown quiet for a while, and we hope that the thought of war has gone away for now. Or perhaps they are gathering strength for a much worse war? This tense anxiety is not good for art.” 10 Ámos sees what is happening and predicts a looming historical catastrophe. In Buring Grave (Burbning Synagogue), the Nagykálló miracle rabbi’s grave is ablaze. The wise tzadik mourns the burning prayer house with tears of blood. He tries in vain to extinguish the fire. Although the cockerel appears blowing the shofar, all hope is quashed by the vermillion flames.

The first anti-Jewish law comes into force in May and this sets a limit to the number of Jews able to work the arts to a maximum of 20 percent.

„December 21, 1938.

It is so humiliating that we are banned from nearly every job. A darkness has engulfed the people, as if they were infected with some kind of germ that renders them inhumane.

They see anti-Semitism as the answer to all problems and although the leaders know that this will not solve everything, they bury their heads in the sand and go through with the laws that push people into terrible suffering. They are expelling a group of fellow humans from the hard-won fortress of fraternity, liberty and equality.”

Imre Ámos bitterly follows events in his dairy. His comments tell of his daily battles and disappointments.

“I haven’t worked for weeks, and we are completely unsure about our future. No one has visited us to buy for months now. In order to get by, with a little lard morning and night, we have been decorating pots for a shop for a pitiful wage. I am suffering terrible mental torture. I wake at night and say to myself ‚Wake up, man, wake up! You need to leave this place, because the soil will not accept your work.” 11 In 1939, they are thrown out of their rooms.

„This came as a complete surprise because we always paid the rent on time and they had no reason to throw us out. We were sad to see this as a sign of modern morals. When states and peoples are being lost to violence, it’s really not such a big thing if a Jewish painter is robbed of his only home and the position he worked so hard to keep goes to a non-Jew.” 12 After spending the summer months in Szentendre, the artistic inspiration he felt there is soon swamped by the trials and tribulations of everyday life back in Budapest.

„September 20, 1939.

We no longer have a studio, and for days I’ve been unable to look at my boxed belongings. I, a man who likes to work, sit in a ground-floor room that is so dark that I squint from the light, and there is little hope of a solution...

I sit shivering in a freezing room. After 4 years of a heated flat, I’ve become unaccustomed to the cold. I’ll have to get used to it again. But that’s not important. Because you can wrap yourself in warm rags in the cold weather, but you can never exclude the icy chill that permeates your soul from the uncultured persecution in the streets.

I haven’t worked for 6 weeks. We haven’t got a separate room, and I can’t bring myself to get the rolls out from behind the stove and cupboard. What would I paint and where?” 13 In spring 1940, Ámos draws and then makes a lino print series entitled Festivities. Jewish festivities, those ceremonies recalling past joy and sorrow, set the rhythm of life for centuries. At this time of persecution Ámos uses festive traditions to give moral strength.

In the summer of 1940, they spend 3 months in Szentendre. But war preparations soon reach this town on the Danube.

„July 10, 1940.

We hear orders barked and boots stamping outside our front door. Manci says that the old soldiers are practising here. Not a reassuring atmosphere to work in. It’s odd that I happen to be working on a picture, (Painter in Front of a Burning House) that shows a joyous painter with a house burning over his head. The only calming element in the picture is an angel lying on the roof, unbothered by the flames. It’s as if the world outside our door has urged this painting out of me.”

He creates dramatic ink drawings during his time in Szentendre that stand as a protest against war. (Put to the Test, Portrait of the Artist’s Wife, Muse II, Dark Times) September 1940 sees Imre Ámos receive his first call to labour service in the 201/32 Company. He’s taken first to Nagykáta and then to Balatonaliga.

His letters to his wife tell of his physical and spiritual situation.

„October 7, 1940.

My darling, we have just arrived at Balatonaliga. I would have liked us to see the Balaton together for the first time, but in the circumstances please don’t blame me for seeing it alone. It is no wonder that people say it is so beautiful. The waves are a wondrous green, pink and pale blue colour like the sea.”

After working hard all week, on Sundays he paints watercolours of the Balaton, deserted autumnal gardens and streets.

He lays railway lines in the day and is able to forget labour service for a while by painting in the evenings. His lyrical Balaton images are born in breaks from forced marches.

„I am lying exhausted after a little ‚walk’. It was a 20-km punishment march. We walked all day to two villages and back, told to ‚hit the deck’ every so often.” 14 „The latrine has one long seat,

Where seven of us often meet.

The roof above is very sparse,

The rain beats down on my naked arse.” 15 On January 12, 1941, this is how he recalls his time spent on labour service:

„I arrived home from labour service on December 13, 1940. I’d done hard physical work for 3 months. My fingers still hurt in the mornings. I think I might have rheumatism from pushing cold wagons and lifting railway sleepers. I’m not fussy. I was a country boy, and I’ve held a pickaxe before, although not as much as I did there. ...But the saddest thing was that we take bread from navvies and I had to abandon my palette and brushes. And I don’t think I ever served my country more with physical work, although I never avoided hard work, than I did with my pictures.”

In January 1941, they rent a third-floor flat that they use as a studio. Ámos works with renewed vigour. For him, the only way in which to stand up against the frightful power of fascism is to protest through his art. His drawings and paintings hold prophetic warning.

His style changes considerably after the outbreak of war. He now incorporates mythical and ancient symbols to describe the drama taking place across Europe. The succinct nature of symbols enables him to bear witness to not only his own life and the world around him but also show the ruination of moral values, the lonely fate, fears and anxieties of those persecuted by history, and the inner turmoil of exile.

His tools of expression alter. He reinforces form with solid contours as his much-loved silvery and pastel tones are now replaced with an intense palette of fiery reds and vibrant blues.

He often paints himself. For him, the self-portrait is a method of self-exploration and self-expression. He surrounds himself with symbolic motifs and this emphasises him as a seer of dreams and maker of myths. The Painter (1939) has a candle placed in the centre of the composition along with a white dove that proclaims the impending arrival of new and purer times. The picture is constructed on striking contrasts of colour; the intense cobalt blue of the sky reappears in a darker shade on the painter’s face as well as the window and the tablecloth. The colour contrasts of cold and hot does not sit separately from each other but each breaks into its own contrasting tone.

He paints double portraits as a record if his love for his wife and their steadfast relationship. This was a form of self-exploration and expression for him.

He collects characteristic motifs around him from his world. In his work, Waiting for the Dawn (1939), behind the peacefully slumbering painter couple we see a cockerel and a branch breaking into leaf, these symbols proclaiming a new world when all will be free.

The figure of an angel is a recurring symbol of his vision. It plays a role equally as important in his visions as it does in the poetry of his fellow in fate, Miklós Radnóti. „Anger sat hidden thus far

in my heart,

Like black-brown seeds

within an apple’s core.

I knew that an angel

walked with me,

A sword in its hand.

It follows one step behind

And protects me when it must.” 16 The angel in Ámos’ paintings is a guardian of his past and his childhood and protects him from the top of a clock or behind the painter’s back. The superimposed symbols in his sketches protest against war and the great threat to personal existence.

This short phase of painting is interrupted in April by a new call to labour service. For three months he works in a road gang in Aszód, Zombor, Hercegszántó, Bezda, Bereg and Doroszló.

„We are building roads now... Standing from 6 in the morning until 8 at night is just enough. It would feel so good to sleep in a proper bed and not on straw.” 17 He is released at the end of June. He works in Szentendre in the summer. He continues his Dark Times series in the autumn. He paints this series between 1938 and 1944, the works in which express his historical visions with dramatic strength. He projects before the viewer a series of apocalyptic visions showing the destruction of war and the threat to humanity. A truncated tree appears as a recurring motif.

The tree symbolises life, goodness and knowledge in Jewish and Christian culture. In Ámos’ world of vision, this tree stripped of all signs of life stands as a tragic symbol of a world destroyed by war.

In the centre of his oil painting, War (1942), the painter and his companion are tied roughly to the dried tree. The flaming logs are Europe, while the lonely female figure represents future mourning. But a tiny shoot of new life springs forth from the branch on the right symbolising the painter’s belief in a better future.

He is called up again in March 1942. His company is sent to the Russian front. Hope of returning home and faith in the human spirit help him to survive physical and mental purgatory. He draws and writes poems on scraps of paper and birch bark. A gendarme destroys his drawings.

In Korosten in 1943, he contracts double pneumonia and camp fever. He lies dying on straw on the floor of a cottage in the Ukraine. On March 20, he writes a letter to his wife that he does not send.

„I have been lying in my quarters with a high fever for days. All the walking has attacked my feet. I pray daily for the Lord God to allow me to come home... so that I might kneel at my mother’s grave and kiss my sweetheart’s cheek. I recall terrible tortured weeks, on a trail of winter retreat in minus 35 degrees...I think, that beyond God’s help, the thing that helped me survive illness was the longing desire to return home to my wife.”

Then on June 24, 1943, after 14 months, he is eventually released home. He draws and paints with strength anew.

„August 20, 1943.

I am finding it hard to return to myself. I look at my work like a stranger. I have realised a great deal over recent days. That which I thought important has shrivelled to insignificance, and that which I previously ignored has won meaning. I am making graphics at the moment as the simplicity of black and white perfectly expresses my emotions at the moment.” – he writes in his diary on August 20, 1943.

Despite the future being completely uncertain, Ámos continues to work with dedication.

He expresses his shocking experiences, his anxieties, his struggles and occasionally his faith in a brighter future in his concentrated drawings and watercolours. These graphics express his concern that human values face destruction but also give voice to the humanist hope that truth and peace will eventually see triumph. He composes his pictures out of symbolic signs. The unity of space and time is broken as objects extracted from their typical surroundings and placed in new contrast gain greater meaning.

“Good” and “Evil” do battle in his drawings. The pictorial symbols of destruction, fascism and war appear: fire, knife, cleaver, axe, saw, boot, rope, demon, monster and snake. Ámos then contrasts these with an embracing couple, a flower, a leafy branch, bread, a book, a dove, a violin and motifs of home that signify faith in the future. And then there is a cockerel heralding new life, a key to open up secrets, a mirror to show the truth, a ladder stretching from earth to the heavens, and the light of a candle to drive away evil. Ámos’ artistic power is in his juxtaposition of symbols. He combines symbols in such a way that gives them even greater depth of meaning. Despite their distance from each other in real life, the fact that Ámos combines them in such a way means that they each give the other a new nuance of form. Emotion and intellect consciously combine in his works. The painter is concerned for human values, he seeks to preserve traditions, he uses the Bible as a source, he dreams of a free future and all the while protests with all his might against all forms of aggression.

On March 19, 1944, Hitler’s troops occupy Hungary.

„March 21, 1944.

Hard days and testing times await us. The war has reached Hungarian territory. We cannot know what will happen. We place our trust in God, and face what will come with a strong spirit and clear conscience. Until now we have done all we could for our homeland and our fellow man. I believe that our deeds will purify our souls, and whatever befalls us, I can say that we have lived honest lives. As an artist and as a man. With God’s will, I will continue my diary in peace after human souls are calmed.”

It is as if Ámos is unwilling to see his impending loss of freedom. His disturbing visions relive his time spent on work service in the Ukraine.

In April 1944, he makes 12 large ink paintings of the Apocalypse. He associates Saint John’s apocalyptic vision with the era.

„And when I turned I saw seven golden lampstands, and among the lampstands was someone like the son of man, dressed in a robe reaching to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. The hair on his head was white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and coming out of his mouth was a sharp sword, His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.” 19

This is how John describes Christ. John, the author of the Apocalypse, records his vision in around 95 B.C. in exile on Patmos. He revolted against Domitianus’ persecution of the Christians, and his letters were addressed to Asia Minor encouraging them not to abandon their faith. Ámos identifies with John, who lived through the catastrophe. He similarly battles with the demons of history. He takes part in the vision with personal disturbance. While Ámos describes his impending death in his diary, poems and letters, he proclaims the arrival of truth in the form of the Apocalypse.

„Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth... Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God... prepared as a bride... beautifully dressed for her husband.” Ámos identifies the land of Canaan with the Calvary in Szentendre. The gates are open wide and welcome all in. He replaces the crucifix with the tree of life. And its branches are heavy with fruit, as a symbol of Ámos’ hopes for the future.

While Ámos illustrates the Bible, the Jewish residents of his home town, including his aunt, his uncle and his half siblings, are taken to their death. Ámos is deeply disturbed by the fate of his relatives and friends from Nagykálló. He compares their suffering to that of Christ on the cross. In his ink drawing, Terrible Times, he places the crown of thorns on his own head and holds his hands up in prayer as his eyes bid a painful farewell to life.

He is called up again in May 1944. He works on the railways first in Jászberény and then in Szolnok. The postcards he sends to his wife give no clues about his condition. The men on labour service are not allowed to write by hand on the pre-printed cards.

He buys a spiral-bound exercise book in August and fills 46 of the 60 pages with ink sketches. This Szolnok Sketchbook becomes his painterly epilogue.

While camp inmates are humiliated on a daily basis, Ámos recreates the peace and love of home. Drawn during forced marches, these drawings are odes to his partner. But his depictions of desired harmony are broken by disturbed visions of war. The artist gives form to his vision amid burning towns and deathly destruction. He turns to Christ. His biblical reference is clear: the axe cut into the wood of the cross bears a swastika. Behind the mourners and the corpse, we see a man’s clenched fist threatening the murderers with a crucifix. The agony of the figure crucified between the two robbers is a projection of his own suffering.

He is transported to Budapest in October 1944.

Szálasi’s oath of office blares out of radios as Margit Anna meets Ámos for the last time in the barracks on Lehel út. This is when he gives his sketchbook to his wife that he drew on labour service in Szolnok completed with amazing stamina. Ámos is taken to the Austrian border. Here his company is forced to sing the National Anthem, and are then handed over to the Germans. He never returns from the concentration camp in Ohrdruf. His death remains as a tragic memento.

Until the very last moment of his life “he writes signs in the sky”. In the certain knowledge of his impending death, he continues to have great faith in the renewal of life and the arrival of a new dawn. The very last words in his diary encapsulate his desire to see mankind united in peace: „When will man get to the point when he can live alongside his fellow man in true love with no violence or murder? Living without hatred, respecting those who prefer peace and saving those who have stumbled onto the wrong path?”

IMRE ÁMOS - Pittore dell’Apocalisse

Inter arma silent musae – In tempo di guerra le Muse tacciono... La vita artistica di Imre Ámos contraddice il proverbio latino di duemila anni fa. L’arte del pittore legato alle tradizioni, con lo sguardo rivolto al passato, dall’animo introverso si dispiega proprio durante la seconda guerra mondiale. Nell’anno in cui scoppiò il conflitto l’artista, profondamente attratto dal mito e dal sogno, reagì a tale svolta storica prendendo coscienza della propria responsabilità morale. Più apertamente il fascismo aggredisce l’essere umano, più cresce la fede e la forza profetica del pittore dal temperamento lirico. Egli si fa carico della sua epoca e dei suoi compagni di sventura.

Come i suoi avi biblici, ha una missione da compiere. Come accadde a Isaia, il Signore ha toccato anche le sue labbra con una brace ardente. La pace dell’Arcadia è sempre più distante da lui. Il pittore restio a occuparsi di questioni sociali e che si aggrappa alla bellezza di tutti i giorni viene inesorabilmente trascinato dall’epoca in cui vive.

Deve affrontare la violenza della storia. Invece di perseguire l’esteticità e di occuparsi dei problemi della costruzione formale dell’immagine, si rivolge con impegno alle questioni etiche essenziali del suo tempo. Cambia anche il suo stile: ricorre a simboli densi e concisi, di valore universale per rappresentare la sua visione della danza macabra dell’Europa.

Dalle sue opere e dai suoi scritti il suo ethos si irradia nitido anche quando è costretto a subire le prove più dure. Ma l’Europa in corsa verso la rovina non coglie i suoi “segni divinatori”. Lotta in solitudine su vari fronti, nei lager. Si dedica al lavoro e alla creazione fino all’ultimo istante della sua vita. Con i disegni di fragile finezza realizzati durante i periodi di lavoro coatto ci offre una testimonianza, ci scuote, ci ammonisce. Con fede e potenza profetica si identifica con i sottomessi. Ci ha lasciato le sue opere come testimonianza degli eletti che aborriscono la violenza e credono nella forza della giustizia.

Imre Ámos - pseudonimo di Imre Ungár - nacque a Nagykálló, una città del nord-est dell’Ungheria molto distante dalla capitale - il 7 dicembre 1907. Perse il padre all’età di sei anni e sua madre andò a vivere, insieme ai due figli, da suo padre. Il nonno, Adolf Liszer, maestro elementare e talmudista, non lo allevò secondo regole strettamente ortodosse. Non gli parlò solo della Cabala, della Torah e delle leggende di Eizik Taub, ma anche della storia biblica del Cristo. Fu nella casa dei nonni che il pittore conobbe il mito e l’universo di fede della terra dei rabbini miracolosi, che ebbero un’influenza determinante sulla sua vita.

Tra le due guerre mondiali sulle rive del Tibisco e del Bodrog fiorì una singolare cultura contadina ebraica chassidica. Fu fondata da Israel Ba’al Shem Tov, che - dopo i pogrom - diede nuova speranza agli umili con le sue predicazioni. Nel XVIII secolo la nuova corrente religiosa giunse dalla Galizia nel bacino carpatico, dove raggiunse ben presto un’ampia diffusione.

Anziché imporre il rigido rispetto delle leggi, il chassidismo metteva in rilievo l’importanza dell’amore devoto, della buona volontà e della purezza dell’anima. Professava un rapporto immediato tra Dio e l’uomo.

Pastori e agricoltori che credevano che Dio si cela in ogni cosa terrena, perciò l’uomo è responsabile del destino di Dio, delle proprie azioni e pensieri. Il fine dell’uomo è quello di procurare gioia agli altri e trovare l’armonia interiore.

Scoprirono la bellezza della vita. Lodavano il Signore lavorando, danzando e gioendo.

Credevano che, come nelle leggende, il bene sconfigge sempre il male. Leggende di rabbini miracolosi si diffusero tra la gente. Pellegrini visitavano le loro tombe da terre lontane, e invocavano il loro aiuto con preghiere e bigliettini di auspicio.

Nutrivano una stima speciale per Eizik Taub, lo zaddik di Nagykálló, il pastorello divenuto studioso, il portatore di verità. Pastori, agricoltori, carrettieri e bottegai credevano che lo zaddik facesse miracoli anche dopo la sua morte. Coppie senza figli lo pregavano per diventare fertili. Scrivevano i loro desideri su bigliettini e li gettavano nella sua tomba.

Nelle leggende chassidiche, così come nei futuri dipinti di Ámos, gli istanti della realtà si fondono con i miracoli desiderati, la vita e il sogno si completano naturalmente a vicenda. La figura dello zaddik “assorto nei suoi pensieri” è una frequente fonte di ispirazione per i quadri del pittore. (Rabbino sognante, Vecchio inserviente del tempio che racconta favole ai bambini, Cabalista) L’infanzia e la casa di Nagykálló tennero Imre Ámos lontano da ogni circostanza inquietante. Oltre alla fede religiosa gli diedero fede nell’uomo, protezione e basi morali.

Dopo l’esame di maturità Imre Ámos va a Budapest, nel 1925, dove lavora alle Officine Láng come argentatore e pittore. Nel 1927, assecondando i desideri della sua famiglia, si iscrive al Politecnico, dove studia per due anni alla facoltà di ingegneria civile. Nel 1929 si avvera il sogno della sua infanzia: viene ammesso all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Budapest.

Il suo insegnante, Gyula Rudnay, si accorge presto del suo talento.

Nelle sue prime incisioni su linoleum (Suonatore d’organetto cieco, Sul ponte, Scaricatore, 1929), che sono ancora fortemente legate allo spazio-tempo reale, rappresenta la vita dei poveri che vivono ai margini della società.

Nel 1930 realizza l’incisione su rame Fiume, porta via i nostri peccati sulla cerimonia del Taschlikh. Il pomeriggio di Rosh Hashanah (suono dello Shofar) i fedeli ebrei si recano al fiume più vicino. Rivolti verso il fiume ripetono le parole del profeta Michea, spargendo briciole di pane nell’acqua come simbolo della liberazione dal peccato. «Egli non serba la sua ira per sempre, perché si compiace di usare misericordia. Egli tornerà ad avere pietà di noi, metterà sotto i suoi piedi le nostre colpe e getterà in fondo al mare tutti i nostri peccati».

Alla scuola d’arte si era iscritto con il suo vero cognome, Ungár, ma dal 1929 assume il cognome Ámos. Firma i suoi primi quadri con le iniziali UAI. Sceglie consapevolmente il nome di un profeta minore della Bibbia, sentendo e sposando la missione profetica.

Nel 1931 conosce Margit Anna, allieva di János Vaszary, che diventa sua amica e compagna di vita. Le sue annotazioni artistiche e le sue lettere mostrano la poliedricità del loro rapporto e l’intreccio inestricabile delle loro vite.

Ogni estate fa ritorno alla sua città natale. Rivive i giorni spensierati dell’infanzia. Dipinge autoritratti e ritratti dei suoi familiari. Rappresenta sempre le figure nel loro ambiente, con oggetti a loro cari. Nei suoi primi dipinti si nota l’influsso dei Nabis, di Bonnard, di József Rippl-Rónai e di Róbert Berény. Ma, mentre nei suoi predecessori domina il decorativismo e l’effetto sensuale, Ámos è interessato all’approfondimento psicologico.

Vuole liberarsi dai legami della materia, deliberatamente minimizza i colori.

Per quanto riguarda la sua concezione artistica, come scrive nel suo diario, si sente affine a Chagall, a Csontváry e a Gulácsy. A legarlo a questi maestri sono la sua visione pittorica, il sogno e la fantasia liberatrice, la sua sensibilità per i contenuti nascosti ed esoterici portati alla superficie.

Nel 1932, al secondo anno di studi, dipinge una tela di grandi dimensioni, In attesa del miracolo, nella quale sembra alla ricerca di una strada. Il pittore bendato, dietro di lui la sposa e il maestro che scruta in lontananza, non aspettano solo un miracolo, sembrano voler evitare un pericolo imminente Nell’agosto del 1934, realizza 30 incisioni su linoleum sulla solitudine di un povero rimasto senza casa in una grande città. Dietro la trama epica di Da acqua ad acqua si delineano le esperienze personali del giovane pittore lontano dalla sua comunità. La serie mostra in modo lapidario il conflitto tra la grande città moderna e la solitudine dell’uomo naturale che vive nell’innocenza.

Nel 1934 Imre Ámos si diploma all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Budapest. A partire dal 1931 partecipa alla Mostra Primaverile dei Giovani allestita nel Salone Nazionale della Società Szinyei. Nel 1934 vince anche il premio Szinyei. La Pinacoteca del Museo di Belle Arti acquista un suo quadro. L’anno successivo espone le sue opere alla 72a mostra collettiva del Museo Ernst: ben 37 dipinti, accolti con grande favore dalla stampa e dagli addetti ai lavori.

«Un talento senza dubbio potente, promettente e con grandi prospettive.» 1

«Già alla sua prima esposizione al Salone della Società Szinyei Merse, suscitò scalpore coi suoi dipinti tenui, simili a sognanti affreschi. Da allora continua a sognare le figure tremule del suo fosco mondo interiore. È un mondo strano, impalpabile, pallido e sbiadito. I suoi colori ondeggiano sullo sfondo. È il nuovo mondo in attesa di redenzione di una giovane anima di poeta quello che prende vita sulle sue tele. Il promettente debutto di un artista di sentimenti profondi in cerca di forme autonome.» 2 Uno dei quadri più importanti della mostra è il dipinto Donne alla sorgente, (1935).

«...una moltitudine attende che le acque si muovano. Perché di tanto in tanto un angelo discendeva sul lago e ne agitava le acque: chi vi si immergeva per primo dopo che le aveva agitate veniva guarito, quale che fosse la sua malattia.» 3 Nel dipinto di Ámos ad attendere il miracolo non sono ciechi e invalidi, ma ragazze e vecchi malati che soffrono per la solitudine dell’anima, aspettano la guarigione delle loro ferite invisibili e la rinascita spirituale. Aspettano da tempo immemorabile. È come se tra noi e questi volti si frapponesse un velo invisibile che ci impedisce di penetrare nel loro io più intimo. Portano il loro passato e presente racchiusi in loro. Ámos ferma l’attimo, ciò che è transitorio e lo rende atemporale. A caratterizzare questo suo dipinto sono i toni pallidi e trattenuti, i colori smorzati, una deliberata attenuazione cromatica. I colori stesi direttamente sulla tela vengono variati in strati successivi e poi spezzati col bianco.

Nel dipinto I santi sono sordi (1935) a ispirarlo sono la sua città natale e i ricordi dell’infanzia. Invece di un tradizionale ritratto doppio, rappresenta se stesso insieme alla madre davanti al mausoleo di Eizik Taub. La madre defunta rievoca gli oggetti mitici del suo universo di fede: nel quadro Ámos mette in risalto - quali attributi del suo mondo spirituale - il gallo, che annuncia l’alba del futuro dell’umanità, e la chiave che cela i misteri.

Nelle opere del suo primo periodo pittorico Imre Ámos crea un mondo di purezza ideale al quale egli stesso anelava. La visione si dispiega nell’armonica unità di spazio e tempo, esperienze reali si fondono con sentimenti mitici e universali, nei quali appare anche di volta in volta un simbolo di valore generale. Il pittore supera il sensualismo degli inizi. La materialità tangibile si unisce all’astrattezza dell’espressione spirituale.

Nel 1935 Ámos sposa la pittrice Margit Anna. La moglie sarà costantemente modella dei suoi dipinti e disegni. Il loro comune atelier è la loro stanza in affitto. Vivono tra molte privazioni, ma il loro amore e la fede nell’arte fa dimenticare loro la povertà che li affligge.

«Vivevamo in una miseria tremenda. Facevamo colazione nella latteria di Károlyi körút con caffè e un panino. Poi tornavamo a casa a piedi e lavoravamo come dannati. Tutti i giorni erano uguali. Dipingevamo volgendoci la schiena per non disturbarci l’un l’altra.

Soffrivamo molto quando faceva freddo nella stanza. A mezzogiorno andavamo alla mensa. E prendevamo del pane di nascosto per mangiarlo a casa per cena. Andavamo sempre a piedi per risparmiare i soldi del tram.» 4 Il 7 dicembre del 1935 Imre Ámos comincia a scrivere il suo diario su un quaderno scolastico dalla copertina a quadretti. Il diario è lo specchio più fedele della sua vita, nel quale, accanto alle gioie e alle difficoltà quotidiane, alle peripezie e alle lotte interiori, rivela con sincerità anche la sua professione di fede.

«7 dicembre 1935.

Oggi compio 28 anni. Non so neanch’io perché annoto gli eventi della mia vita quotidiana. Quel che ho da dire provo a esprimerlo con la pittura. Quel che ho ottenuto agli occhi dei miei colleghi e del pubblico lo devo al mio lavoro. Vorrei continuare a vivere con serenità ed equilibrio, seguendo una strada che mi è ormai quasi del tutto chiara, al fianco della mia affettuosa e comprensiva compagna.» 5 A volte gli capita di non scrivere niente per mesi o addirittura per anni, altre volte annota per molte settimane di seguito le sue impressioni e gli avvenimenti della sua vita. Il diario dimostra in maniera inequivocabile che la pittura riempiva del tutto la sua esistenza.

«Per raggiungere certi risultati non facciamo altro che lavorare, spinti da un’esigenza interiore, con sincerità, non ci occupiamo di politica, se abbiamo un po’ di soldi li spendiamo per comprare del materiale, e - se riusciamo a esporre - non è perché abbiamo sgomitato, ma perché abbiamo delle opere di buona qualità e ci abbiamo lavorato a sufficienza.»

Mentre lotta con i problemi quotidiani, è sempre più interessato ad ampliare le dimensioni della realtà e a comprendere il significato segreto degli oggetti.

«21 dicembre 1935.

Ho trascorso alcuni giorni nella mia città natale. Mentre guardavo i vecchi mobili, la libreria e il portapipe di mio nonno, i vecchi candelabri e gli specchi, ogni cosa ha evocato in me un’immagine. Pure in passato certi oggetti mi hanno spinto a mettermi al lavoro. Ognuno di essi è circondato da un’atmosfera unica ed è legato ai miei ricordi. Negli ultimi tempi mi interessa proiettare sulla tela questi ricordi. Definisco questa mia aspirazione ‚espressionismo associativo’.

Secondo me l’unico modo per dare qualcosa di nuovo è rendere con sincerità le immagini che vivono dentro di noi. Ambisco a proiettare sulla tela dei sentimenti che sono solo miei eppure appartengono a tutti. Non voglio dipingere qualcosa, ma addensare sulla tela l’insieme dei ricordi associati all’oggetto, alla figura, così che il contenuto spirituale sia quel qualcosa in più che lo distingue da ogni altro quadro. Vorrei infondere un certo carattere spirituale a ogni mia opera.» Ámos mostra un crescente interesse per la proiezione iconica di ricordi e sogni. In «Davanti allo specchio della mia bisnonna» gli avi appaiono come macchie sbiadite, fluttuanti, la forza della famiglia che aggrega le varie generazioni, l’eterna continuità della vita. Rappresentando simultaneamente presente e passato spezza la tradizionale unità di spazio e tempo del quadro.

«Secondo me non basta dipingere gli oggetti, le figure o i paesaggi come meri motivi, il pittore deve proiettare attraverso la sua visione soggettiva l’anima di questi oggetti vivi seppure inanimati, ossia l’effetto che esercitano sul loro ambiente. È sempre più interessato alla proiezione iconica della memoria e del sogno. Nei suoi dipinti il sogno è la manifestazione dei desideri. Il subconscio non si disintegra in frammenti. Realtà e sogno si uniscono perché la realtà è elevata a un livello mitico. Per lui il sogno rappresenta la liberazione dalle circostanze apparentemente immutabili della veglia, durante il quale può scuotersi di dosso tutti i vincoli. Il protagonista dei suoi sogni è il pittore stesso, che ne è al tempo stesso il regista. Al contrario della pittura surrealista, Ámos non spegne mai la coscienza e l’emozione che legano tra loro le associazioni.

Nei suoi dipinti è nelle situazioni reali della vita che appare il sogno, e Ámos impiega il contenuto associativo di quest’ultimo per ampliare il messaggio contenutistico del quadro.

Nel dipinto Divano verde (1935) all’uomo disteso sul divano appare in sogno il profeta che legge il libro della sapienza e della legge. Ámos integra organicamente nello spazio reale il fenomeno irreale del sogno con i gesti della figura reale. Nel dipinto Sogno dell’uomo che fa danzare l’orso (1937) prende vita la figura giocosamente grottesca dell’artista da fiera paesana. La complessità del sogno si sviluppa in maniera più indiretta nel quadro intitolato Sogno, nel quale alterna l’unitarietà dell’atmosfera con frammenti onirici contrastanti collegati tra loro. Qui il sogno dell’artista non è più proiezione di desideri infantili. Gli oggetti della stanza emanano ancora il senso di protezione che si prova a casa propria, ma nel mondo esterno fuori dalla finestra appaiono segni forieri di pericolo. Ámos si sdoppia. Sulla testa del pittore onirico, creato dall’immaginazione, la corona di spine di Cristo è un presagio di angoscia mortale e di persecuzione.

Insieme alla moglie frequenta regolarmente la biblioteca del Museo di Belle Arti, dove studia le opere di Matisse, Emil Nolde e Chagall. Sulla base di una fotografia pubblicata su un numero della rivista Múlt és Jövő (Passato e futuro) realizza anche un ritratto di Chagall, al quale si sente attratto perché ne condivide la visione del mondo.

«7 ottobre 1937.

Con sforzi sovrumani abbiamo venduto qualche quadro, racimolando un 200 pengő, e con lo sconto per l’esposizione universale siamo partiti. Siamo alloggiati in un ostello per boy-scout; una stanzetta a Passy. La prima impressione di Parigi è che ti sembra di esserci nato ed è lì che vorresti morire. Le vedute sono favolose. Qui ogni cosa si mostra nella sua grandiosità, e ovunque ci si imbatte in esperienze artistiche. In questa esposizione è raccolto il meglio da tutto il mondo.» Ámos dipinge poco durante i 3 mesi a Parigi, preferisce disegnare e raccogliere impressioni.

Dipinge vedute armoniose e liriche di strade e piazze parigine. Ne immortala la vitale e sensuale bellezza e la intreccia a scene oniriche. Anche i colori riflettono questi suoi rari momenti di gioia: il malva, l’ocra e il cinabro sono ravvivati da sprazzi incandescenti di turchese e viola. L’evento saliente del suo soggiorno parigino è l’incontro con Chagall.

«4 ottobre 1937.

Siamo appena tornati da casa di Chagall. Non sappiamo come esprimere la gioia di averlo incontrato di persona, di aver potuto parlare con lui, che tanto amiamo per la sua pittura. È una persona deliziosa, indossava una giubba a righe gialle e nere, una camicia rossastra, pantaloni grigi di lana. Aveva i capelli arruffati, ci ha sorriso coi suoi occhi obliqui e scintillanti e ci ha accolti in una stanza piena di quadri. Erano uno più bello dell’altro. È stato molto contento di guardare i disegni e i quadri che gli avevamo portato. Ho notato in lui un certo entusiasmo. Molti li ha trovati impeccabili. In alcuni ha trovato da ridire sui colori e sull’impostazione. ‚Sie müssen in Parigi leben und arbeiten.’’Dovete venire a vivere e lavorare a Parigi’ ha detto.

Siamo ancora molto giovani. Abbiamo un’eccellente sensibilità. Sull’espressione non ha avuto nulla da eccepire. Ma se lavoreremo a Parigi per un po’ di tempo, ci sarà del tutto chiaro quali sono le nostre mancanze. La sua gentilezza ci ha fatto enorme piacere. Finora l’avevamo ammirato da lontano, ora abbiamo potuto stringergli la mano. Alla fine ci ha congedato dicendosi felice che l’Ungheria produca giovani di così gran talento.»

Imre Ámos era attratto da Chagall per le comuni radici est-europee, la determinazione, l’educazione, la religione, l’introspezione, la ricerca della verità. Nella loro pittura si ritrovano molti motivi comuni. Il loro destino, la loro fede, la loro ars poetica e visione artistica attingono alle stesse fonti. Nonostante gli ambienti diversi, Il potere aggregante della religione, l’esperienza mistica della quotidianità e delle celebrazioni pervase di preghiere e riti hanno dato a entrambi la stessa dirittura morale.

Dalla loro sensibilità per il misticismo deriva che entrambi si accostano al mondo con un impulso emotivo. E mentre la sperimentazione dell’avanguardia artistica europea si concentra soprattutto su problemi formali, Chagall e Ámos sviluppano una visione basata su un sistema di significati simbolici, un universo dotato di leggi proprie, nel quale il mondo umano è caduco e si arricchisce con l’evocazione di significati millenari.

Nell’arte dei due pittori le analogie si possono evidenziare soprattutto nell’enfasi data ai motivi simbolici arcaici. Ma mentre nei quadri di Chagall la gioia di vivere pagana incontra l’estasi interiore, l’uomo si lascia andare nella natura con euforica felicità, Ámos non sa godere avidamente della vita, non conosce questo dinamismo esplosivo. Nei suoi dipinti Chagall crea anche l’apoteosi del mistero e della sfrenatezza dell’amore, nella pittura di Ámos è assente la passione animale e gioiosa: Ámos ha un temperamento più pudico, cela al mondo esterno i suoi sentimenti più intimi.

Chagall ama e sa giocare. Crea spesso situazioni grottesche, nei suoi quadri egli stesso contempla ridendo le stranezze della vita. L’arte di Ámos è concepita su basi puramente emotive, raramente sa liberarsi dalle angosce e dall’oppressione della povertà, delle lotte quotidiane per la sussistenza.

Sulle forme di Chagall ha influito anche il cubismo. Egli divide lo spazio in maniera più audace, inverte con naturalezza il sotto con il sopra. Nei suoi dipinti mette in connessione spazi fiabeschi nei quali non valgono le esperienze dei sensi, che sono al tempo stesso celesti e terreni, reali e surreali; attratto dalla natura magica dello spazio, crea una visione dinamica. Presente, passato e futuro si permeano a vicenda. Anche Ámos spalanca la dimensione temporale del presente, ma non la accelera, a moltiplicarsi non sono gli istanti, ma vuole attingere energia e forza dal tempo concepito nel mito archetipico e collettivo del passato.

Oltre all’incontro con Chagall, l’altra grande esperienza di Ámos è il padiglione spagnolo all’Esposizione Universale di Parigi. L’opera principale della mostra è Guernica di Picasso: una protesta di una forza sconvolgente contro l’eccidio compiuto dal fascismo. 8 Imre Ámos e Margit Anna trascorrono tre mesi a Parigi.

«Non potevamo restare. Eravamo a corto di soldi e siamo dovuti tornare a casa. Molti nostri amici rimasero sorpresi. Là eravamo stranieri. Tutto sembrava così incerto, non si riusciva a capire che cosa stesse accadendo nel mondo. A parole tutti ci incoraggiavano a restare ma nessuno ha pensato ad aiutarci. Decidemmo di ritornare a Pest, lì almeno eravamo a casa. Quando arrivammo a casa, il mondo danzava ormai sul filo del rasoio.»

– ricorda Margit Anna. 9 Tema ricorrente dei suoi dipinti è il mondo hasidico di Nagykalló, i rabbini sognanti, i vecchi servi del tempio e le figure autorevoli dell’Antico Testamento. Il rabbino miracoloso, la saggezza degli anziani, le candele della notte di venerdì, la preghiera di una madre, tutto questo si intreccia con la calura estiva delle strade assolate e le lunghe ombre del crepuscolo. Proiettando i ricordi del sogno e del mito, ricerca nuove strade spirituali e formali.

Il desiderio di spiritualità, la gioia della liberazione dai vincoli materiali erano noti ad Ámos dalle leggende chassidiche, le quali evocano spesso la figura sognante e meditabonda dei rabbini miracolosi e dei cabalisti.

Nel suo dipinto L’inserviente del tempio che racconta favole ai bambini (1938) i bambini ascoltano rapiti, l’inserviente del tempio siede con aria sognante sulla sua poltrona mentre racconta, anche il volto dei piccoli irradia devozione e fede. Ámos enfatizza sullo sfondo il motivo simbolico dello shofar, il cui suono, secondo le dottrine, apre il cielo affinché le preghiere possano giungere direttamente a Dio. Anche Il cabalista (1938) si aggira per le strade con un’espressione estatica sul volto.

Angeli dalle trombe argentee vegliano su di lui. I bambini che lo scherniscono sono i ricordi negativi dell’infanzia di Ámos. I maestri vagabondi vestiti di un lungo caffettano venivano spesso derisi per strada dai monelli.

Nel dipinto Rabbino sognante il reale e il soprannaturale si fondono in un’unità nel primo piano del quadro. Il pellicano e il pesce, i due simboli arcaici del Cristo, vengono ingranditi e proiettati l’uno contro l’altro: ciò mostra chiaramente che, oltre all’ambito della sua religione, Ámos attinge al mondo del mito universale. Allo stesso tempo nel quadro, come semplice segno, nel rosso incandescente della memoria c’è anche il mausoleo di Eizik Taub.

Dopo il viaggio a Parigi, in estate, Imre Ámos trova rifugio a Szentendre dalle aggressioni che minacciano la sua esistenza. Lajos Vajda fu il primo a invitare Ámos a Szentendre nel 1935.

«24 luglio, 1939.

Siamo a Szentendre da cinque settimane. Splendida cittadina traboccante di temi compositi, vecchie e anguste stradine, antichi androni e bellissime chiese malandate che danno a questo luogo una strana atmosfera. La sera le colline si tingono di un blu-viola irreale, le notti di luna sono d’una bellezza unica, quando la luce si riflette fosforescente sui vecchi muri delle chiese. Qui le mie opere acquistano una pienezza mistica.»

Ha immortalato anche in versi la città che tanto amava.

«Polverose rive del Danubio, panchine sonnacchiose,

colpi di remi nell’acqua sciabordante.

Quante volte hanno pesato sul mio cuore solitario,

Sul mio corpo stanco.

Ma verso sera sopra Monostor,

il plenilunio è un gong lucente nel cielo luci velate,

Colori che scorrono sopra la mia fronte.

Città dai molti campanili,

Torno a riposare su pietre nascoste

Offro al vento il mio petto rovente sopra Szentendre.»

Dipinge vedute della città. Sovrappone i motivi, le pareti delle case diventano trasparenti, interni ed esterni si fondono. Le forme sono create da colori e toni splendenti. Ámos eleva Szentendre a città di pace, armonia e luce, sulla quale veglia un angelo giallo.

Dall’immagine obiettiva del paesaggio e della città sviluppa progressivamente la rappresentazione visionaria. Nella luce del crepuscolo tutto si ammanta di mistero.

Nel suo secondo quadro di Szentendre, dipinto dalla collina della chiesa, nell’immagine topograficamente fedele della città il giardino racchiuso da un muro di cinta con una mucca è ancora una parte reale della vita rurale, ma il pope che fluttua nell’aria sopra la città è la proiezione della visione dell’artista. Realtà e immaginazione si fondono organicamente nel dipinto.

Il 12 marzo 1938 le truppe tedesche occupano l’Austria. Con l’Anschluss Hitler annette il paese al Terzo Reich e, dopo l’accordo di Monaco, tocca ai Sudeti. Ámos, che si è sempre tenuto lontano dalla politica, nel suo diario scrive:

«Le ultime settimane sono state tremende. Le voci spaventose si sono per ora placate e speriamo che l’idea della guerra sia stata scacciata. Oppure stanno solo raccogliendo le forze per una guerra ancora più orribile? L’ansia nuoce all’arte.» 10 Colpito da quanto sta avvenendo, Imre Ámos presagisce l’imminente catastrofe storica.

Nel suo dipinto Tomba in fiamme la tomba del rabbino miracoloso di Nagykálló è in fiamme. Il saggio zaddik sparge lacrime di sangue dinanzi al tempio incendiato. Si cerca invano di spegnere il fuoco. Anche se appare il gallo che suona lo shofar, la speranza è sopraffatta dal simbolico bagliore rosso delle fiamme.

In maggio entra in vigore la prima delle leggi razziali, che stabilisce che persone di stirpe ebraica possono occupare al massimo il 20% delle carriere nelle libere professioni intellettuali.

«21 dicembre 1938. È così umiliante vedere come veniamo esclusi da quasi tutti gli ambiti di lavoro. Una sorta di tenebra è calata sugli uomini, sembrano infetti da una specie di bacillo che li rende disumani. Nell’antisemitismo vedono la soluzione di tutti i mali e i governanti, pur sapendo che questo non risolverà i problemi, ficcano la testa sotto la sabbia e promulgano leggi che gettano la gente nella miseria più nera. Stanno scacciando un gruppo di esseri umani dal bastione duramente espugnato della libertà, eguaglianza e fraternità.»

Nel suo diario Imre Ámos segue con amarezza lo sviluppo degli eventi. Le sue annotazioni testimoniano anche le sue lotte interiori e le vicissitudini quotidiane.

«Non lavoro da settimane, viviamo nella più totale incertezza per il nostro futuro. Da mesi nessuno si fa vivo con l’intenzione di comprare qualcosa. Per il momento, giusto per avere il minimo, un po’ di pancetta mattina e sera, stiamo decorando fiaschette per un droghiere in cambio di una manciata di centesimi. Mi sento terribilmente combattuto, la notte mi sveglio e quasi sempre mi dico: ‚Svegliati! Te ne devi andare, questo posto non se ne fa niente del tuo lavoro.’» 11 Nel 1939 devono lasciare la loro stanza in affitto.

«Questo ci ha colto di sorpresa perché pagavamo sempre puntualmente l’affitto e non avevano nessun motivo per sbatterci fuori. Prendiamo tristemente atto di questo segno della morale corrente. Oggi, quando stati e popoli periscono a causa della violenza, non bisogna mica prendersela tanto se un pittore ebreo si vede togliere da un impiegato non ebreo l’unico regno e luogo di lavoro duramente mantenuto.» 12 La gioia di lavorare dei mesi estivi trascorsi a Szentendre è bruscamente smorzata dai problemi e dalle lotte quotidiane che lo assillano al ritorno a Budapest.

«30 settembre 1939.

Non abbiamo più un atelier, sono giorni che non riesco a guardare le mie cose imballate e accatastate. Io, che non so stare in ozio, siedo inerte in una stanza al pianterreno così buia che quando esco resto abbagliato dalla luce e non vedo soluzioni...

Me ne sto qui in una stanza gelida, ho il raffreddore. Dopo 4 anni con il riscaldamento, mi sono disabituato al freddo. Ora devo abituarmi di nuovo, ma non è questo che conta, perché quando fa freddo puoi infagottarti nei tuoi stracci, ma non puoi evitare il gelo che ti avvolge l’anima a causa dell’atmosfera e della barbara persecuzione.

Sono sei settimane che non lavoro. Non abbiamo una stanza tutta per noi e non ce la faccio a decidermi a tirare fuori i rotoli da dietro la stufa e l’armadio. Cosa dovrei dipingere, se anche avessi dove lavorare?» 13 10./ Diario, 9 novembre 1938.

Nella primavera del 1940, in una stanzetta buia, Ámos disegna e poi realizza una serie di 14 incisioni su linoleum intitolata „Festività”. Festività ebraiche, cerimonieche rievocano gioie e dolori della storia e che hanno scandito il ritmo della vita per secoli. Negli anni della sua persecuzione Ámos vuole dare forza morale facendo rivivere le tradizioni festive.

Nell’estate del 1940, trascorrono 3 mesi a Szentendre. Ma i preparativi bellici raggiungono presto anche la cittadina sul Danubio.

«10 luglio 1940.

Davanti al portone sento gridare ordini e un pestare di scarponi. Manci dice che sono i vecchi soldati che si esercitano. Non è certo un’atmosfera serena e ispirante per lavorare. È curioso che io stia lavorando a un quadro con un pittore in estasi dentro una casa in fiamme. (Pittore davanti a una casa in fiamme) l’unico elemento rasserenante del quadro è l’angelo sdraiato sul tetto, incurante delle fiamme. Sembra quasi che a suggerirmi il quadro sia ciò che accade davanti al portone.”

Durante i mesi a Szentendre leva una vibrante protesta contro la guerra realizzando disegni a china di drammatica potenza, Soppesato, Ritratto della moglie dell’artista – Musa II, Tempi bui) Settembre 1940: Ámos riceve la prima chiamata al servizio di lavoro obbligatorio nella compagnia 201/32. Viene portato prima a Nagykáta, poi a Balatonaliga.

Descrive le sue condizioni fisiche e spirituali nelle cartoline che spedisce alla moglie dal campo di lavoro.

«7 ottobre 1940.

Mia cara, siamo appena arrivati a Balatonaliga. Avrei voluto vedere il Balaton per la prima volta insieme a te, ma date le circostanze mi perdonerai se sono qui da solo. Ha ragione chi ne parla così bene, onde di un verde, di un rosa e di un azzurro meraviglioso, come quelle del mare.»

Dopo giorni di lavoro sfiancante la domenica dipinge acquerelli del Balaton, dei desolati giardini autunnali, delle strade.

Mentre posa traversine per costruire binari, la pittura gli fa dimenticare per un po’ la sua condizione di asservimento. Le sue liriche immagini del Balaton nascono tra una marcia forzata e l’altra.

«Giaccio esausto dopo una ‚passeggiatina’. Una marcia di punizione di venti chilometri.

Abbiamo marciato tutto il giorno, due villaggi e ritorno. Ogni tanto ci gridavano ‚A cuccia!’.» 14 «La lunga panca della latrina,

ci stiamo seduti in sette.

Il tetto è fatto di stecchi secchi,

la pioggia mi batte sul culo.»

Il 12 gennaio del 1941 rievoca così il servizio di lavoro obbligatorio: «Il 13 dicembre 1940 sono tornato a casa dal servizio obbligatorio. Ho passato quasi tre mesi di duro lavoro fisico. La mattina le dita mi fanno ancora male. Forse mi sono venuti i reumatismi spingendo vagoni gelidi e sollevando binari e traversine. Non sono delicato, ero un ragazzo di campagna, abituato a maneggiare la vanga e il badile, anche se non tanto quanto laggiù. ...Ma la cosa per me più triste è che abbiamo rubato il pane agli sterratori e io ho dovuto abbandonare tavolozza e pennelli, e non credo di aver servito di più la patria con il lavoro fisico - e dire che non mi sono mai tirato indietro - che non con la pittura.»

Nel gennaio 1941 affittarono una stanza luminosa in piazza Hunyadi che usarono come atelier. Ámos si rimette al lavoro con rinnovata energia. Di fronte alle forze tremende del fascismo, per lui l’unico atteggiamento possibile è la resistenza spirituale, la protesta attraverso le sue opere. Nei suoi disegni e dipinti ci manda avvertimenti di una forza profetica. Nell’anno in cui scoppia la guerra il suo stile muta sotto l’influsso diretto delle circostanze storiche. Nei tempi di crisi trova nei simboli la fonte mitica e arcaica per esprimere il dramma della sua patria e dell’Europa. Con la laconicità e l’inequivocabilità dei simboli rende testimonianza sul mondo e su se stesso, sul disfacimento dei valori morali, sulla solitudine dell’essere umano alla mercé della storia, sulla sua umiliazione, sulle sue angosce e paure, sull’inquietudine interiore di chi è bandito dalla società.

Mutano i suoi mezzi espressivi. Definisce le forme con contorni potenti. Rispetto ai toni argentei e pastellati dei suoi primi dipinti, ora usa colori forti, rossi incandescenti e blu intensi.

Di frequente dipinge se stesso. Per lui l’autoritratto è un modo per rivelare se stesso, per mostrare il suo io. Si circonda di motivi dal significato simbolico: enfatizza il suo io sognatore e mitopoietico. Nel suo dipinto Il pittore (1939) la candela e la colomba della pace, poste al centro della composizione, annunciano la venuta di una nuova epoca di purezza. Il quadro è costruito su intensi contrasti cromatici: il cobalto iridescente del cielo ritorna in una sfumatura più intensa sul volto del pittore, nella finestra e sulla tovaglia. I contrasti tra colori caldi e freddi non si distinguono tra loro, ogni superficie è spezzata dalla tinta complementare del dato colore.

In alcuni ritratti doppi immortala l’amore che lo lega a sua moglie e il loro solido rapporto.

Per lui l’autoritratto è un modo di aprirsi, di presentare il proprio io. Raccoglie intorno a sé motivi caratteristici del suo mondo. Nel quadro intitolato Aspettando l’alba (1939), dietro la coppia di pittori immersa in un sonno pacifico, il gallo e il ramo verdeggiante salutano la venuta del futuro sperato, di un mondo umano e libero.

Uno dei motivi ricorrenti del suo sistema visionario è l’angelo: nelle sue visioni svolge un ruolo importante quanto nella poesia del suo compagno di sventura, Miklós Radnóti.

«Nel mio cuore finora tante rabbie nascoste

covavano come semi bruni nel torsolo di una mela,

e sapevo che un angelo mi scortava con la spada in mano,

mi seguiva, mi sorvegliava e mi difendeva in caso di bisogno.» 16 L’angelo nei quadri di Ámos è il custode del suo passato e della sua infanzia che lo veglia ora dalla cima dell’orologio, ora dietro di lui. Coi simboli sovrapposti nei suoi disegni egli protesta contro la guerra e i tempi che minacciano la sua esistenza personale.

Questa breve fase creativa è interrotta in aprile da un’altra chiamata al servizio di lavoro.

Lavora per 3 mesi alla costruzione di strade a Aszód, Zombor, Hercegszántó, Bezda, Bereg e Doroszló...

«Adesso stiamo costruendo strade... In piedi dalle 6 del mattino fino alle 8 di sera non è poco. Vorrei tanto dormire su un letto normale e non su un pagliericcio.» 17 Viene congedato alla fine di giugno. Durante l’estate lavora a Szentendre. In autunno continua la sua serie Tempi bui. Nella serie di dipinti realizzati tra il 1938 e il 1944 formula con potenza drammatica le sue visioni storiche. Nelle sue visioni apocalittiche proietta ai nostri occhi le devastazioni della guerra. Il pittore, il testimone dei tempi bui, è minacciato da mille pericoli, ma nei suoi quadri c’è anche il simbolo della speranza.

Un motivo ricorrente nei suoi dipinti è l’albero spezzato. Nella tradizione ebraica e cristiana l’albero è simbolo della vita, del bene e della sapienza. Nel dipinto a olio intitolato Guerra il pittore e la sua compagna sono legati da una fune all’albero inaridito.

I tizzoni in fiamme rappresentano l’Europa, la figura femminile solitaria è il presagio del lutto a venire. Ma dal ramo destro dell’albero spunta un piccolo germoglio, segno della speranza del pittore e della venuta di un nuovo mondo.

Viene nuovamente richiamato nel marzo 1942. La sua compagnia è inviata al fronte russo. La speranza di tornare a casa e la sua fede nell’uomo lo aiutano a superare gli stenti fisici e morali. Disegna e scrive poesie su carta straccia e cortecce di betulla.

Una guardia distrugge i suoi disegni.

A Korosten, nel 1943, si ammala di polmonite bilaterale e tifo petecchiale. Giace per giorni tra la vita e la morte su un pagliericcio in un casolare ucraino. Il 20 marzo scrive una lettera alla moglie che però non spedirà.

«Da giorni giaccio nel mio alloggio con la febbre altissima. Ho i piedi distrutti dal tanto camminare. Ogni giorno prego che il Signore mi conceda di poter tornare a casa, per inginocchiarmi sulla tomba di mia madre e baciare il viso della mia amata.»

Il 24 giugno 1943, dopo 14 mesi viene finalmente congedato.

«Mi resta il ricordo di giorni tremendi, una ritirata su strade sterrate a meno 35-40 gradi... Credo che, oltre all’aiuto di Dio, a farmi superare la malattia sia stato il desiderio immenso di tornare da mia moglie.» 18 «20 agosto 1943.

Faccio fatica a ritrovare me stesso. Guardo i miei lavori come un estraneo. Nei giorni che ho vissuto mi sono reso conto di molte cose, quel che finora ritenevo importante è diventato insignificante e quel che prima non degnavo d’attenzione ha acquistato significato. Per il momento faccio solo grafica, il bianco e nero con la sua laconicità esprime alla perfezione i miei sentimenti attuali», scrive nel suo diario il 20 agosto del 1943.

Consapevole della totale incertezza del futuro, Ámos lavora come un ossesso. Nei suoi disegni e nei suoi quadri a tempera, densi come ballate, egli esprime le sue esperienze sconvolgenti, le sue angosce, le sue lotte interiori, ma talvolta anche la fede che ripone in un futuro migliore. In queste opere grafiche si leva la voce di un umanista che teme la distruzione dei valori umani, ma crede al tempo stesso nella vittoria della giustizia e della pace. Crea le sue composizioni ricorrendo a elementi simbolici. Cessa l’unità di spazio e tempo, gli oggetti si staccano dal loro ambiente consueto e si arricchiscono di nuovi contenuti semantici in nuovi contesti.

Nei suoi disegni il Bene e il Male combattono l’uno contro l’altro. I segni della distruzione, del fascismo e della guerra sono il fuoco, il coltello, l’ascia, l’accetta, la sega, gli stivali, gli scarponi, la fune, il demone, il mostro, il serpente; ad essi si contrappongono la coppia abbracciata, il fiore, il ramo coperto di foglie, il pane, il libro, la colomba, il violino, l’angelo custode, i motivi della casa, che sono invece i segni dell’attesa di un futuro migliore – il gallo che annuncia la nuova vita, la chiave che apre i segreti, lo specchio che rivela la verità, la scala che collega la terra al cielo la luce della candela che scaccia la malvagità sono altri emblemi che integrano l’inventario simbolico straordinariamente ricco del pittore.

La forza artistica di Ámos risiede nell’associazione dei simboli. Lega tra loro i segni in modo che il significato da essi veicolato risulti ancora più efficace e potente. Motivi apparentemente distanti tra loro, che nella realtà della vita non si manifestano mai insieme, si proiettano simultaneamente l’uno contro l’altro in un accostamento associativo, dando vita a una nuova qualità formale. Nei disegni sentimento e ragione si uniscono con consapevolezza. Il pittore teme per i valori umani, mette in salvo l’eredità del passato, usa la Bibbia come fonte, sogna un futuro libero mentre protesta contro la violenza con moltiplicata energia.

Il 19 marzo 1944 le truppe di Hitler invadono l’Ungheria. In primavera inizia la deportazione degli ebrei delle province.

«21 marzo 1944.

Ci attendono giorni duri e prove difficili. La guerra è giunta in territorio ungherese. Non possiamo sapere che cosa accadrà. Confidiamo in Dio e guardiamo al futuro con animo forte e coscienza limpida. Finora abbiamo fatto tutto il possibile per la patria e per l’umanità.

Credo che i nostri stenti purificheranno la nostra anima e, qualunque cosa ci accada, posso affermare che abbiamo vissuto con sincerità e onestà. Come artista e come uomo.

Dio mi conceda di poter continuare queste mie annotazioni in pace, dopo che gli animi si saranno completamente placati.» È come se Ámos non voglia rendersi conto che la sua libertà è a rischio. Nelle sue visioni sconvolgenti perdura il ricordo del servizio obbligatorio in Ucraina.

Nell’aprile del 1944 realizza 12 grandi disegni a china sul tema dell’Apocalisse. Identifica la visione apocalittica di San Giovanni con la sua epoca.

«Come mi fui voltato, vidi sette candelabri d’oro e, in mezzo ai sette candelabri, uno simile a un figlio d’uomo, vestito con una veste lunga fino ai piedi e cinto di una cintura d’oro all’altezza del petto. Il capo e i capelli erano bianchi come lana candida, come neve; i suoi occhi erano come fiamma di fuoco; i suoi piedi erano simili a bronzo incandescente, arroventato in una fornace, e la sua voce era come il fragore di grandi acque. Nella sua mano destra teneva sette stelle; dalla sua bocca usciva una spada a due tagli, affilata, e il suo volto era come il sole quando risplende in tutta la sua forza.»

Così Giovanni descrive la figura di Cristo. Giovanni, l’autore dell’Apocalisse, annotò le sue visioni intorno al 95 d.C. durante il suo esilio sull’isola di Patmos. Si era ribellato alla persecuzione dei cristiani da parte di Domiziano e, con la sua opera, voleva incitare le 7 chiese dell’Asia Minore a resistere e a non abbandonare la fede.

Nella sua serie Ámos si identifica con Giovanni che visse la catastrofe del mondo. Anche lui sta lottando contro i demoni della storia. Partecipa alla visione con il suo personale tormento. Mentre Ámos intuisce la sua morte imminente nel suo diario, nelle poesie e nelle lettere, nell’Apocalisse annuncia la venuta della verità.

«Vidi poi un nuovo cielo e una nuova terra ... la nuova Gerusalemme scendere dal cielo, da Dio, ... pronta come una sposa adorna per il suo sposo.» Ámos identifica la terra di Canaan con il Calvario di Szentendre. I battenti del cancello sono spalancati per accogliere tutti. Il crocifisso è sostituito dall’albero della vita. I suoi rami sono carichi di frutti, simbolo della speranza di Ámos per il futuro.

Mentre Ámos illustra la Bibbia, gli abitanti ebrei della sua città natale, tra cui suo zio, sua zia e i suoi fratellastri, vengono deportati. Ámos è profondamente scosso dalla sorte toccata ai suoi parenti e ai suoi amici di Nagykálló. Compara le sue sofferenze a quelle del Cristo crocifisso. Nel suo disegno a china Tempi terribili pone una corona di spine sulla propria testa, intreccia ancora le mani in un gesto implorante e, con lo sguardo, prende dolorosamente congedo dalla vita.

A fine maggio del 1944 viene richiamato in servizio. Lavora alle ferrovie prima a Jászberény, poi a Szolnok. Le cartoline spedite alla moglie non rivelano niente della sua situazione.

Gli uomini costretti al servizio di lavoro non potevano scrivere a mano sulle cartoline prestampate.

In agosto compra un quaderno a spirale di 60 fogli e ne riempie 46 di disegni a inchiostro blu. Il Libro dei disegni di Szolnok sarà l’epilogo dell’arte di Ámos.

19./San Giovanni: Apocalisse, I.12-16

Tra le umiliazioni subite dai prigionieri del lager Ámos rievoca la pace e l’amore. Questi disegni nati tra una marcia forzata e l’altra sono confessioni sulla sua compagna. Ma l’armonia desiderata è interrotta da visioni tormentate, dalle immagini della guerra. Tra città in fiamme e la devastazione della morte l’artista formula la sua missione.

Si rivolge al Cristo. Attualizza la Bibbia in maniera inequivocabile: la scure conficcata nel legno della croce ha una croce uncinata. Dietro le figure piangenti e il cadavere, una mano maschile stretta in un pugno minaccia gli assassini con un crocifisso.

Nell’ottobre 1944 viene portato a Budapest. Mentre alla radio risuonava il giuramento di Ferenc Szálasi, il primo ministro, a duce della nazione, Margit Anna incontrava Ámos per l’ultima volta nel cortile della caserma di via Lehel. Fu allora che Ámos consegnò alla moglie il quaderno dalla copertina a quadri con gli ultimi disegni nati durante il servizio a Szolnok. Ámos fu portato alla frontiera austriaca. Lì la sua compagnia dovette cantare l’inno nazionale, poi furono consegnati ai tedeschi. Non fece mai ritorno dal campo di concentramento di Ohrdruf.

Fino all’attimo estremo della sua vita “ha scritto segni nel cielo”. Anche nella certezza della morte confidava nella possibilità di purificazione dell’uomo, aspettava la venuta di una nuova epoca piena di fede. Nelle ultime righe del suo diario risuona l’ultimo desiderio di questo artista che ha saputo “affratellarsi” con il suo popolo:

«Quando arriverà finalmente l’uomo al punto di vivere senza violenza, senza uccidere, nell’amore vero? Senza odio, apprezzando chi ama la pace e redimendo le anime traviate da influenze nefaste?»

Ámos Imre életrajza

1907. december 7-én született Nagykállón, Szabolcs megyében Ungár Imre néven. Édesapja Ungár Zsigmond kiskereskedő, édesanyja Liszer Paula.

1912. Meghal édesapja. Édesanyjával nagyapja, Liszer Adolf tanító és talmudmagyarázó házába költözik, itt tölti gyerekkorát.

1925. A Nagykállói Magyar Királyi Főgimnáziumban érettségizik jeles eredménnyel.

Budapestre megy, a Láng Ezüstgyárban dolgozik mint ezüstöző és festő.

1926-29. A Műegyetem Általános Mérnöki karán tanul.

1929. Felveszik a Budapesti Képzőművészeti Főiskola festő szakára. Mestere Rudnay Gyula.

1930. Kreisl Béla magániskolájában megismerkedik Anna Margittal, akiben életre szóló barátot, társat talál.

1931-34. Minden évben részt vesz a Szinyei Társaság Tavaszi Szalon kiállításain.

1934. Hivatalosan felveszi az Ámos nevet.

1935. áprilisban az Ernst Múzeum CLII. Csoportkiállításán bemutatja festményeit, május 20-án feleségül veszi Anna Margit festőnőt.

Befejezi tanulmányait a Képzőművészeti Főiskolán.

Nyáron először látogat Szentendrére.

1936. Anna Margittal közösen kiállítása nyílik az Ernst Múzeumban (Nemzeti Szalon CLXI. Csoportkiállítás).

1943. Ukrajnában kétoldali tüdőgyulladást, majd flekktífuszt kap.

14 hónap után júniusban végre hazatérhet.

1944. március-áprilisban rajzolja 12 lapból álló sorozatát, az Apokalipszist.

Június 1-jén ismét munkaszolgálatra hívják. Jászberénybe, majd Szolnokra viszik.

Szolnokon egy kockás füzetbe rajzolja megrendítő látomásait.

Októberben Budapestre szállítják. A Lehel úti kaszárnyában találkozik feleségével, Anna Margittal és átadja a kockás füzetbe rajzolt utolsó műveit, a „Szolnoki vázlatkönyvet.”

Novemberben százada elindul az osztrák határ fele.

A türingiai Ohrdruf-Nord koncentrációs táborból soha nem tért vissza.

His father is a shopkeeper by the name of Zsigmond Ungár, his mother is Paula Liszer.

1912 His father dies. He and his mother move into his grandfather’s house, a teacher and Talmudist called Adolf Liszer, where he spends his childhood years.

1925 Graduates from Nagykálló Grammar School with excellent grades, moves to Budapest, where he works at the Láng Silver Works as a silverer and painter.

1926-29 Studies Engineering at Budapest University of Technology.
