From the Bishop of Taunton The fullness of life now I was struck by an article by Janet StreetPorter in the Independent on Sunday which was titled, ‘Better a full life than an endless one’. She was commenting on some new research being funded by a group of technology billionaires, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook being one of them, who were looking into the possibility of extending human life. In her classically direct style she concludes, “I can see no reason to extend my life beyond what is normal and have no intention of copying Mr Zuckerberg and turning into a wrinkly 125 year old reliant on gadgets and supplements to get me through my dreary day.” We are in the Easter season and there is always a temptation to consider eternal life as the promise of some kind of endless life in the future, but the gospel of John in particular is keen to emphasise that the promise of Easter is not fullness of life in the future, but fullness of life NOW. Of course that is not simply a selfish hope that my life will be full, but rather a gospel imperative that those who believe in the Easter story should work and pray for fullness of life for all humankind, not least amongst the poor and the dispossessed. A native Indian tribe in North America has a tradition. At the end of each day, each member of the tribe is invited to collect a stone – a white stone if it has been a good day and a black stone if it has been a bad day.

When they die the stones are poured out over their body. If there are more white stones than black stones the whole community celebrates. If it is the other way round everyone goes home. May those of us who believe the Easter story live our lives to the full, not just for ourselves but for the welfare of all humankind, so that the number of white stones will always overflow into celebration. +Peter Taunton

Folly Field

The picture on the front cover this month shows the new plaque celebrating the registration of our playing field with Fields in Trust as a QE II Field. The purpose of the Trust (set up by HRH Prince William in celebration of his grandmother’s Jubilee) is to protect playing fields in perpetuity. The field was already protected by being a registered charity but the new trust deed will add to that protection and will help with achieving grants should we want to improve facilities in the future. The name given to the field has not been changed but is now even longer! It’s full title is: The Wynne Willson War Memorial Recreation Ground, A QEII Field but I suspect most people will still refer to it as The Folly Field. Anyone seeking further explanation can have their questions answered at the Annual Parish Meeting on 15 April. Stan Cherry, for Bathford Parish Council.

QUIZ NIGHT

at the Parish Hall

Members of the RBL in Bathford are currently compiling notes on the development of the Legion Branch here, and especially the development of the RBL Club. Does any Bathford Bulletin reader remember the building of the RBL Club premises in 1969 and 1970? How was the money raised? We have written records, but they are old, faded and may not tell the complete story. We are keen to record the RBL history before local residents' memories are lost. If any Bulletin readers can recall the building of the Club, or have any relevant papers or photographs, we would be grateful for their help. Please contact Kenneth McLeod (Hon. President) on 859319 or by email to kjm@kjmcleod.plus.com Our very own Bathford Village Choir will be starting on Thursday 25 April at 7:45pm in the Parish Rooms. Happiness is singing in the choir. Do come along and join us.

Filmed locally, Freshford plays the village of Titfield, and Monkton Combe the station. Do come along and join us for an enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment, followed by tea and cakes.
