2020 started with great fanfare as we prepared to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Housing First MN Foundation. We had dreams, goals, aspirations and celebrations to plan. And then. COVID-19. The Foundation turned on a dime, and under the leadership of Donnie Brown, accomplished more than we could have imagined was possible.

The Foundation stayed focused on the work of building futures through housing by continuing to build new homes, expanding our developing partnerships in the community and continuing to raise and use our funds to build and remodel worthy projects.

In celebrating our 25th anniversary, the Foundation is proud to report a total of 56 completed community build projects; 176 shelter beds and 89,268 square feet of dignified housing since its inception. This year the Foundation had great fundraising and build project momentum. Our fundraising efforts are strong due to an increase in grants, and corporate and individual contributions. We have more build projects in the pipeline than ever before. Of course, we couldn’t reach our fundraising goals without the support of our sponsors who stuck by us through the pandemic.

The Foundation is in good financial health. Our reserves are healthy, and our project budget has increased in an effort to meet the housing and partnership demand in our community. With a strategic plan in place, several projects in the pipeline, a successful virtual Gala and Give to the Max Day, we closed out 2020 strongly, and we are well-positioned for an impactful 2021. While we saw a decrease in event revenue, due to the pandemic, we continued to drive forward, completing several life-changing projects.

One of these was completing our fourth Housing for Heroes project, which provides transitional housing for veterans without a home. In October, construction began on our fifth Housing for Heroes build project in North Minneapolis to be completed early next year. Thank you build partner Lennar and trade partners for your invaluable commitment and contributions.

We plan to construct two more Housing for Heroes builds in 2021 along with up to 10 apartment units in need of remodeling. We have commitments lined up from 3 build partners and are excited to work in collaboration with Avivo to provide safe and updated apartments for their program participants to live as a family during their journey through rehabilitation.

This year turned out completely differently than what I envisioned at the start, and I am proud to have participated in a 25th anniversary year that saw growth and perseverance by staff and volunteers alike on our Housing First Minnesota Foundation Board. This wild ride is not over yet, but we have proven we can rise to the occasion and continue to do life changing work in our communities, and to effectively partner to build safe housing for Minnesotans in need. Thank you.
