Camp SUN-sational this summer! We have the hottest camp in town for kids who will start in Kindergarten through 6th grade this fall at Camp SUN-sational. Daily activities include games, crafts, local field trips, in-house entertainment and swimming.

A Message from Our Director Dear Residents: It’s spring and we are all excited to start something new. There are many exciting changes coming to the District this year. A $2.8 million grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) was awarded to the Batavia Park District to help fund renovations for the future Patrick J. Callahan Community Center at 150 Houston St. in downtown Batavia. The Park District purchased the 12,420 square foot building in 2021 with the goal to transform it into a community center to increase the District’s indoor recreation space. The Batavia Historical Society donated $430,000 toward the acquisition of the building so the District can add a museum lab, a makers space and additional collections space.

The Park Board Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers. The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. The center’s other amenities include a new home for Batavia Access Television, community room, an active older adult multi-purpose room, enrichment room and administrative spaces. The facility will become ADA accessible with an elevator and ramps. The future plans will address the changing needs and trends of our community. We are excited about this project because it will use our reserves and capital budget to pay for construction without increasing the tax rate. The Callahan Community Center is slated to open in 2025. Pickleball is all the rage, and the Park District has something special in store for all of you who can’t get enough of it! We will be constructing new pickleball courts at West Main Community Park, demolishing the multi-sports court next to Main Street and replacing it with eight pickleball courts to allow for tournament and recreation play. The pickleball courts are slated for completion by fall of this year. In the meantime, drop in for open gym pickleball at the Civic Center on weekdays for $3. More information is available on page 55. And, we are hosting a spring break tournament on March 25 in the Civic Center Gym. Stay tuned to social media and our website for information on summer lessons, leagues and tournaments. I’m bursting at the seams to introduce Batavia’s newest event called “Batavia Uncorked; A Casual Wine Event.” This is for you vino lovers! You’ll be able to sample a wide array of wines along with food and live music at Batavia Riverwalk. The event is being held on Saturday, June 8 from 1–4 p.m. Only 500 tickets will be sold so act quickly! Check out page 9 for the juicy details. Take time for fun this spring! All the best,

Spring Break With Us! We have a ton of engaging fun planned for March 25-29. We have open gym, a spring break camp or Klub Fun to entertain and exercise young ones. Adults can get a break too by taking a drop-in yoga or fitness class.

Young chess players will delight in a spring break session focused on strategy and skill. Beginners and seasoned players will learn from an experienced chess coach. Sign your child up now for Chess Scholars Spring Break. Turn to page 40 for registration info.

Did you know Batavia Park District has 17 miles of trails, 42 parks and 26 playgrounds? Check our map on page 82 and pick a park or trail that’s new to you. It’s a great way to venture out and discover a new favorite place to play.

Join the Klub Klub Fun is the perfect way to provide entertainment and socialization for kids ages 5-11. The program runs all day and includes fields trips, gym time, special guests and an afternoon snack. Please register your children in advance! See page 21 for more details.

Shoot Hoops at Youth Basketball Open Gym Drop in to the Civic Center for some sporty time for your youngsters at our youth basketball open gym from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 25-28. Cost is $3 per player per day. Kids ages 12 and under need to be accompanied by an adult. Admission is free for adults.

Drop In for a Yoga or Fitness Class Schedule some “me time” during spring break. Recharge, relax or energize by dropping into a yoga class for $13 or a fitness variety class for $7 per visit. Check our class offerings on the fitness pages beginning on page 44.

Learn about Batavia’s History Batavia Depot Museum’s spring exhibit “Markets and Meals” gives insight into how residents gathered food and the evolution of general stores ad grocery stores to big box chains. See historic photos, artifacts and stories, plus kids will get handson experience in the interactive play space. While you’re there, be sure to browse the permanent exhibits as well as the caboose and bank exhibits. See page 69 for museum hours.

Storytelling Presentation PechaKucha Night

Ages 9–12

Ages 21+ Food and beverages available for purchase PechaKucha Nights are informal, fun gatherings where creative people get together and share their ideas, works, thoughts—just about anything—in the PechaKucha 20x20 format.

Tweens will receive a glow stick, and if you find the Golden egg you will receive a special prize. Bring your own flashlight and bag to collect eggs. Please preregister for this event as space is limited.

Egg Dash All ages Enjoy an Easter surprise from the comfort of your home! One of our friendly characters will hide eggs, filled with small treats and candy, in your front yard. Register only one family member per household. The Easter treats will be delivered on Wednesday, March 27, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Fee is $35 per house; only available to Batavia Park District residents.

Touch a Truck 2024 All ages Bring your children to discover a variety of local vehicles up close. Touch-a-Truck will be held in the Eastside Community Center parking lot, 14 N. Van Buren St. At past events, the Batavia Park District’s trolley, a fire truck, police car, bus, tow truck, tractors and more have made appearances! Come explore! Registration is not necessary, but parent supervision is required. From 10–10:45 a.m., this event will become sensory friendly, so no honking, please.

Easter Egg Hunt Ages 2–8 All little bunnies are invited to hop on over for the annual Easter Egg Hunt! Be sure to see the Easter Bunny and bring a basket to hold all the goodies you find.

Night at the Museum – Earth Hour All ages Have you ever wished you could see what happens at the museum after dark? This is your chance! We’ll be joining people across the country as we turn off the lights and electronic entertainment for Earth Hour. Visit us for a special flashlight tour and learn how people of the past had fun without electricity at this night time experience.

Professional genealogy sleuth Tina Beaird will share her tips for gathering and protecting family history for future generations. This Preservation Week program is hosted by the Batavia Public Library.

Batavia Uncorked New Event! A Casual Wine Event Ages 21+

Saturday, June 8, 1–4 p.m. Peg Bond Center, 151 N. Island Ave. Vino lovers, this event is for you! Sample a wide variety of wines at this laid-back casual event. Enjoy a variety of unique wine along with food, live music and the relaxed ambiance of The Riverwalk. Tickets are $25 per person and $10 for designated drivers. On May 24, the ticket price increases to $30.

Get your tickets now! Tickets include entry to the event, three hours of wine tasting of 10-one ounce samples and a commemorative glass. Only 500 tickets will be sold. Don’t miss out! Get your tickets today at bataviaparks.org or at the Civic Center or Eastside Community Center. Attendees and ticket purchasers must be 21 years or older and present a valid, state-issued ID card at the time of check-in. Last call is at 4:30 p.m. and the last pour is at 4:45 p.m. No one under age 21 will be allowed to enter the festival. Pets are not permitted. Save the Date! Pints by the Pond a Craft Beer Festival Ages 21+ Saturday, Sept. 21 Peg Bond Center, 151 N. Island Ave. If you love sampling good beer, gather your friends for Pints by the Pond, Batavia’s outdoor craft beer festival now in its third year! Sample unique beers from more than a dozen local breweries. Tickets go on sale Monday, June 3.

Camp SUN-sational Batavia Park District’s Camp SUN-sational is summertime fun that your children do not want to miss. The program is for kids entering kindergarten through 6th grade in the fall. Activities include games, crafts activities, theme days, local field trips, in-house entertainment, and swimming. All participants are required to wear closed-toed shoes (no sandals) and bring a sack lunch and a water bottle each day. Extended-hour participants are picked up onsite. Field trips are included in the fee. No refunds will be issued for this program. The Batavia Park District is dedicated to providing a safe and fun summer camp experience. Camp SUN-sational will not meet on Monday, May 27 and Thursday, July 4. Locations: G rades K-4, Eastside Community Center, 14 N. Van Buren St. Grades 5-6: Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St.

Ages 5–6 This class builds upon art skills using different mediums and art styles such as abstract, mixed media, realistic and impressionism. All will be explained on their developmental level. Visuals and books are used to support each project. The mediums covered include watercolor, tempera paint and sticks, chalk and oil pastels along with art markers. Nature like rocks, leaves, sticks and dried flowers also may be used. All supplies are included. We will study the work of artist Georgia O’Keefe. Instructor: Christine Crosby

Enjoy an eight-week session with an experienced instructor guiding you and your child(ren) as you sing, dance, move, laugh, play instruments and more! Each session introduces a new song collection. Tuition includes a CD and digital download of the music we use in class, an illustrated songbook and the Music Together newsletter. New Horizons Preschool is a program of the Batavia Park District that was founded in 1996 to provide young children with the skills and experiences that will help them thrive in Kindergarten and beyond. New Horizons offers a unique experience of providing an opportunity for social and emotional growth through a play-based experience. Building selfesteem and confidence is the base of our curriculum, allowing the children to be successful. This curriculum sets us apart from other area preschools. A typical day may include dress-up, reading books, science experiments, building fun objects, puzzles, crafts and music, plus play time outside on our own playground or indoors in our own gym. Students benefit from these experiences because they gain skills in socialization, fine and large motor skills, as well as cognitive development, plus they have fun while doing it. We nurture independent, creative thinkers.

Registration for the 2024-2025 School Year Parents may register their children online at bataviaparks.org or in person at the Civic Center or Eastside Community Center. A $20 nonrefundable registration fee and the correct deposit are due at the time of registration. Children must be potty trained to register for New Horizons. Pull-Ups-style training pants only are permissible in our Young 3s class. In-district registration begins on Feb. 5; out-of-district registration begins March 4.

Monthly Fees & Times for School Year 2024-2025 Monthly payments are due the first day of the month, September through May. A $10 late fee will be assessed after the 1st of the month. The New Horizons school year runs from early September to the end of May. If snow days are used during the school year, those days will not be made up. Beginning Aug. 1, 2024, a 50% refund will be provided to parents who decide to drop after registration.

Kids’ Club Before & After School Care Program Kids’ Club for Kindergarten – Grade 5 This dynamic and successful program provides before- and after-school activities that are enriching and recreational in a well-supervised setting. Daily activities can include gym activities, science, arts and crafts, and homework time. This program will run in conjunction with the school calendar.

Klub Fun Days off School Program Klub Fun Grades K–5 Looking for someplace to go and something to do on school days off? Look no further! Klub Fun is a restructured recreational program that includes field trips, indoor special events, special guests, gym time, craft activities, and an afternoon snack. All your fun is included in the fee so be ready to have a blast! There is no transportation provided on school days off. Be sure to wear comfortable clothing, closed toe shoes, and bring a sack lunch. Klub Fun withdrawals close seven business days prior to the Klub Fun day or the first Klub Fun day of a break. Join us for the 6U spring softball league! All teams will practice for a half-hour and play their game immediately afterward. A uniform top, visor and socks will be provided for each player. The league will use a tee similar to a traditional tee-ball. All girls must bring their own glove, and any kind of athletic shoe may be worn. Volunteer coaches are needed.

Designed to introduce the game of lacrosse fundamentals to our youngest athletes. We will build a solid foundation, increase basic skills and develop a passion for the game through a progressive series of drills and games. No long-term commitments and no equipment needed. Lacrosse stick suggested but not required.

Girls Softball 8U-14U

Location: James O. Breen Community Park Lacrosse Fields in St. Charles.

Ages 14 Improve your skills, make new friends and play ball! This league is played with Geneva and Sugar Grove Park Districts and will require some travel for games. For the 10U, 12U, and 14U teams, the season will conclude with a single game elimination playoff. Please provide a jersey and pant size as well as what school your child attends at registration.

Instructor: River City Lacrosse

• Registration deadline is March 15, 2024. • Players will receive a full uniform; top, pants, visor and socks. • After the deadline, you will be waitlisted and only placed on a team if numbers allow. • Practices begin early April, weather pending. The Accelerators Running Club is a developmental and competitive program that teaches athletes about the structure of track and field. Athletes will have the opportunity to compete in several track meets. The practices will cover drills, form and fitness training.

Soccer League Ages 3–4 and 5–6 This developmental league introduces young players to the game of soccer, including soccer skills, fundamentals and playing on a team. This is a one-day-per-week commitment as teams will practice for half an hour and then play their games immediately after they practice. There will not be goal keepers, and all players will play at least half the game. Players will receive a jersey for the season. Shin guards are required. Volunteer coaches are needed. Shotokan Karate Pre-Karate Ages 4–6 In our pre-karate safety classes, young children develop flexibility, strength and coordination in fun, yet disciplined activities. This program is specifically designed for growing minds and bodies. Class will not meet May 27

Karate Ages 7+ Youth karate classes will put children in touch with their bodies and offers a good mix of strength training, with cardiovascular and flexibility exercises. Increase coordination, agility and poise, as well as learning lasting personal safety skills. All will benefit from the mental stimulation of learning the choreographed moves of the kata and the discipline of conforming to the class rules. Parent/child classes are a great way to spend quality time with your child, while conditioning muscles, developing coordination and improving cardiovascular fitness.

What to Wear to Karate Class Students should wear loose-fitting clothing and a white T-shirt to the first class. The instructor will hand out forms for purchasing a uniform (Gi). Cost is $59, which includes the white pants, top, belt and patch. The uniform is not mandatory, but most students will want to train in it.

Jr Basketball

Age 3–4

This instructional program teaches the basic skills of basketball while making sure all players stay active and engaged. We will work on dribbling with both hands, passing and shooting techniques and understanding basic offense and defense techniques. As players learn the basic mechanics and build confidence, we’ll add larger challenges as we progress. Please bring a water bottle.

Learn soccer the All Star way with drills hidden in fun games and association techniques that get down to the player’s level. We will cover simple foot skills, dribbling, passing, shooting, basic rules and work on spreading the field. Please bring a water bottle, shin guards and size 4 soccer ball.

Basketball Skills Age 6–8 Individual skills and team play will be focused on in this program. Speed and agility will enhance each player’s ability to get up and down the court quickly, generate rapid change of direction and create explosion to the basket. Ball handling, proper shooting technique, footwork and defensive/ offensive strategies will be covered. Please bring a water bottle.

Soccer Skills Age 5–7 Improve your soccer game with speed and agility drills, allowing for more powerful shots, increased range on the field and efficient change of direction. All basic skills of dribbling, shooting, passing and spacing will be covered. Please bring shin guards, a size 4 soccer ball and a water bottle.

Jr T-Ball Age 3–4 Mechanics and hand-eye coordination are the keys to early success in T-ball. Players in this program will be more confident in this active class. We’ll work on the proper mechanics of catching, throwing, fielding, base running and batting. Players will be moving and learning even when in the dugout! Please bring a water bottle and glove.

T-Ball League Age 3–4 Throwing, fielding, base-running, and batting will be the focus of this introductory league. Every player will get the opportunity to play each position as the teams are kept small. Each player will receive a team hat and jersey. Please bring your own glove and water bottle.

Age 6–8

Children will be introduced to the proper basic mechanics, know-how and course etiquette at an early age. This class will include basic swing practice, understanding the clubs, safety rules and playing a small sided course. Please bring a water bottle; if you have your own clubs, please bring them.

Learn how to better your running form while also increasing speed and endurance. Participants will learn the basics of track and field, such as sprinting, distance running, high and long jump. Enjoy games that will help teach form.

Jr. All Star All Sports Age 3–4 This class is for the all-around athlete who wants to take a shot at different sports! We will focus on a new sport each class, including baseball, football, floor hockey, soccer, basketball and more! Learn the basic rules and mechanics all while we play games that keeps everyone moving. There’s no reason to pick a sport when you can play them all.

Jr. Parent Tot Sports Age 2–3 This program is a great opportunity for a parent and child to bond and have fun together while learning a variety of sports. Participants will improve simple motor skills such as catching, throwing, batting, shooting, passing, running and hand-eye coordination. Sports played may include soccer, basketball, hockey, T-ball and football.

Track Stars Skills Age 9–12 Increase speed and endurance while also bettering your running form! Participants will learn the basics of track and field, such as sprinting, distance running, high and long jump. Games will be used to learn form and train.

Speed & Agility Skills Age 9–12 Perform at the top of your game! In this course we will cover acceleration, deceleration, core training and endurance training.

Cheer Lessons

What to Wear to Class

Ages 5–7

Cheer Lessons: Wear athletic attire and lace-up tennis shoes (required). Hair should be tied back and out of the face.

This is a noncompetitive class. Athletes will learn facial expressions, arm motions, vocals, jumps, flexibility, strength, tumbling, stunting and poms. A pep assembly will be held the last day of class.

Tumbling: Wear a leotard or fitted athletic attire. No jeans or baggy clothing. Hair should be tied back and out the face.

Tumbling – Level 1 Age 5–7 Level 1 is for a new tumbler to learn forward and backward rolls, cartwheels, backbends, roundoffs and more.

Don’t forget to bring a water bottle!

Tumbling – Level 2 Ages 8–12 Level 2 is for a tumbler who has completed Level 1 or has a tumbling background. In this class, the tumbler will learn back walkovers, front walkovers and the beginning stages of front and back handsprings.

Tutu Tiny, Tutu Cute & Tutu Fun Ballet and Tutu Tap

Dance Class Helpful Tips Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “Tutu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.”

Ages 2.5–5 Tutu Tiny, Cute and Fun Ballet, and Tutu Tap are introductory-level classes built around fun, recognizable children’s music and props to learn basic directions, terms, positions and more. Young ballet and tap dancers gain social and listening skills, confidence and expression, as well as physical development and coordination.

Dance Attire: Please wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion. No denim is allowed. Most dancers are comfortable in leotards/tights or leggings.

Beginner Ballet Ages 2–2.5 Students learn the beautiful art of ballet in a fun, yet professional environment. Through movement and terminology, students learn grace, improve coordination and flexibility and develop confidence. Ballet 1 is for children new to dance through beginners. Leotard, tights, hair in a pony tail or bun, and leather ballet shoes with ties cut off are required.

Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations. Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation!

Me & My Grown Up Ages 2–2.5 This class is for the first-time dancer with their favorite adult by their side, to learn and promote class expectations, confidence and explore dance.

Cooking Springtime Sweets and Treats

Dessert Look-Alike Class Ages 7+

Ages 3–12

Giving a nod to a popular TV show, we will transform two cupcakes to look like main entrees. Each student will make a cheeseburger cupcake and a spaghetti and meatballs cupcake. Students will learn how to make cupcakes from scratch and how to color frosting and fill pastry bags. They will learn the decorating techniques to make the cupcakes look like something else.

Join us for this yummy class. Each child will use their creative skills to create an entire tray of special cookies and cupcakes. The class will include a baker’s hat for your child to decorate, a variety of frosting colors and a wide array of sprinkles and toppings. We will then add a candy border for a special masterpiece. Each child will go home with enough goodies to feed the entire family. This is a perfect class for anyone who loves sweets. Age 3-5 must have an adult.

Join a registered dietitian for a garden-toplate cooking experience that will entice young chefs to whip up some tasty sliders with fresh herbs, and swirl in fresh fruit to a yummy frozen dessert. Bring your friends to cook and share in the delicious meal after class. Use of aprons, kids’ knives and cutting boards and food for two recipes are included with class fee. You will explore the proper ways to groom, tack and handle horses. Lessons will be held in an indoor arena during inclement weather. First day of class is orientation and groundwork. Make-up class held at the end of the six weeks. Riders should wear jeans or Jodhpur pants and hard soled riding or hiking boots with a small, low heel. Must have an approved riding helmet or bicycle helmet to ride.

Learning a second language can open a world of possibilities for your child. In this class, students will embark on their Spanish language journey, learning conversational Spanish and some Spanish grammar, reading and writing skills through interactive, engaging and fun activities.

Spring 2024 Productions

Ages 5–7 Recommended for new or beginning acting students who want to participate in the next play or musical, Beginning Acting covers the fundamentals of acting through sensory, observation and relaxation exercises and games. Beginning actors will learn and practice good habits of basic stage movement, blocking and body work in order to learn to move and act with purpose. This class will provide actors with the groundwork to take the stage with confidence and culminates with a fun mini showcase on the last day of class.

“Little Mermaid” Ages 5–16 Journey “under the sea” with Ariel and her aquatic friends in Disney’s The Little Mermaid JR., adapted from Disney’s Broadway production and the motion picture (featuring the popular Academy Award-winning music and delightfully charming book and lyrics). Based on one of Hans Christian Andersen’s most beloved stories, it is an enchanting look at the sacrifices we all make for love and acceptance. ACT 2: Acting in Performance

Ages 7–14 Recommended for students who currently are in or who are planning to participate in a play or musical production, this class focuses on meeting the needs of each actor, and working to get to the next level of performing for an audience. Through learning and application of techniques, we will work on setting each actor’s goals and finding and fixing performance gaps through individualized coaching on techniques and methods for performance. The second half hour will focus on extension of the craft by digging deeper into character work, objectives, relationships and putting the words to action to develop a scene or monologue that engages the audience in the world of the character. This class concludes with a monologue showcase on the last day of class.

Magic Tree House: Pirates Past Noon Kids Ages 5–12 Two siblings, Jack and Annie, visit the magic tree house on a dreary, rainy day. They find a book about where the sun shines and the waves crash, so they wish to travel to this tropical place. Magically, they are transported to the 18thcentury Caribbean, in the time of pirates! The siblings meet Captain Bones, a mean old pirate who captures and forces them to help him find buried treasure. It’s up to Jack and Annie to find their way back to the tree house and make their way home. Ages 16+ A Master Gardener from the University of Illinois Extension Program will teach how resilient gardeners deal with unpredictable issues to produce food using sustainable gardening techniques. Learn concepts such as watering, soil, fertility, seed selection, seed saving and harvesting and storage.

Hikes Cave Hike All ages w/adult Join us for a guided hike to the only cave in the Chicagoland region! Learn what makes our cave so unique before taking home a piece of geologic history for yourself. Children must be accompanied by a registered adult. Dress for the weather, hikes go rain or shine! Staff

Ages 2–5 w/adult Introduce your child to the amazing plants and animals of springtime. We’ll explore the woodland, soil, and prairie through hands-on activities, play, stories, or singing songs, in addition to a simple craft. Dress for being outside and possibly getting messy as this class is primarily outdoors. Week 1: Woodland Springtime Babies Discover who’s waking up in the woodland through a discovery walk and outdoor activities. Week 2: Hidden Insects Your child will learn what lives in the soil by going on a bug hunt! We will then build a bug hotel for the critters. Week 3: Prairie Plants and Pollinators Encourage your child’s curiosity through exploring the prairie and learning about bees and butterflies.

Bookworm Wednesdays Ages 2–5 w/adult

Earth Hour Illuminated Hike All ages w/adult Join the world as we partake in one big, iconic action – turning off the lights! Show love for the Earth by powering down the lights and electronics and enjoying time outdoors or with others. The trail will be lit with solar-powered lanterns for exploring the outdoors at night. Campfire and marshmallows included! All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Come to the nature center and listen to an exciting nature-themed story! Each meeting will feature a different book, simple craft and may even include a short hike or a special animal visitor. Put your bird-brains to work to design, build your best birdhouse and submit your avian abode in this creative competition in time for Illinois’ Spring Bird Count. Work as a family or on your own to decorate it with recycled materials. All submissions will be on display for voting at the nature center and winners will be announced in multiple categories. Fee covers one birdhouse kit, a packet including guidelines and additional resources. Please submit all birdhouses to the nature center on May 4.

Watch the progression of the last solar eclipse viewable in Illinois for the next 20 years. Bring your lunch and we’ll take care of dessert. Activities, treat bags and viewing glasses will be provided for all who register.

Family Campfire! All ages w/adult Relax around the campfire and hear some legends and go on a short night hike to explore the woods before sitting down to roast your own marshmallows! All children must be accompanied by a registered adult.

Brilliant Buds Ages 2–5 w/adult Join us in discovering the brilliant colors and smells of spring flowers while on an adventure in the woodland. The museum is in a restored Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad station, which was built in 1854 and recognized in 1979 for its uniqueness by the National Register of Historic Places. Spring Exhibit | March 1-July 21 Markets and Meals Batavia’s got to eat! This exhibit explores the essential role grocers, butchers and bakers have played in the health of Batavia from the city’s early days of general stores to today’s big box retailers. With intriguing artifacts, an interactive play space, photos and stories, museum visitors will learn more about the stores that have kept Batavia fed. Visitors will also learn how fragile our food systems can be and how Batavians have helped each other weather times of want. When America mobilized for the war effort in the 1940s, ration books and Victory Gardens helped ensure there was enough for all. Small grocers extended credit and churches organized mutual aid. Find out how Batavians today are fighting food insecurity in our own backyard.

Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry now owned by the Batavia Park District. It has been used as a swimming facility since 1920. It features a sandbottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet, which includes islands, slides, and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables.

Memorial Program Celebrate and commemorate a loved one’s life or express sympathy or condolences for the loss of a friend or family member with a memorial tree or bench. The District offers several options to memorialize your loved one or to mark a special date or occasion. Placement along the Batavia Riverwalk is no longer an option for a memorial bench or tree due to spatial limitations.

Memorial Trees

Memorial trees leave a lasting legacy, which will grow stronger and blossom year after year. Trees are planted twice a year (spring and fall). The cost for a Memorial Tree is $800, and includes the tree, stone marker, and installation. Please visit bataviaparks.org for a full list of available trees.

Memorial Benches

Memorial benches add beauty to a park and provide a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy as they relax in their surroundings. The cost for a 4-foot bench is $2,550, and a 6-foot bench is $3,000, which includes the bench, plaque, and installation.

Batavia Park District Pet Memorial Program The Batavia Park District recognizes that many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Commemorate the life of your beloved pet by purchasing a brick or agility equipment through the District’s Pet Memorial Program. • Kids’ Club, Klub Fun, New Horizons and Camp SUN-sational participants are subject to different terms of refund and withdrawal policy. See parents’ manuals or description for more information.

NSF Checks

• Please allow two weeks to receive refunds. Refunds will be applied to any outstanding balance owed on any programs or activities.

Checks returned for non-sufficient funds will be assessed a $20 service fee.

Program Refund Policy Refunds will be considered for the following reasons: • Class cancellations/Park District closings will result in a refund that will be mailed to the person who was enrolled in the class unless the participant is a minor, the refund will go to the parent/guardian who signs the registration form. If you wish to apply this refund to another class, you must notify the Park District immediately. • Refund requests received 5 business days before the first class meeting will be accepted, less a service charge. If application is received less than 5 business days prior to start of program and it causes enrollment to fall below minimum and the spot cannot be filled; no refund will be given. • Refund requests received after the second meeting of the program will not receive a refund with the exception of a written medical excuse prior to completion of the program. A $5 service charge and program supply costs will be deducted from the amount of refund for each program, including medical reasons. Medical excuses will result in a pro-rated refund based upon the number of classes held prior to the date listed on the physician’s excuse. If program falls below the minimum required and the spot cannot be filled, no refund will be given. • Applications for refunds for one-day programs (with the exception of Klub Fun) must be submitted 5 business days prior to class starting in order to receive a refund. Refunds will not be accepted after the class has ended. • All refunds will be issued in the form of how payment was originally made when a refund application is approved before the class starts. Checks are processed by the Batavia Park District front office bi-monthly and sent via mail. • All refunds applied for are subject to a $5 service charge. Instances where fees are $10 or less, the service charge will be based on 10%.

Inclement Weather Policy For program and event updates or cancellations, please visit bataviaparks.org/rainout. The umpires or instructors decide the status of play after program starts. They will base their decisions on the field conditions and the likelihood of rain or thunder.

Out-of-District Fee Policy The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the Park District via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the Park District in 1969. A copy of a map showing the Park District boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the Park District Administrative Offices. Persons living outside the Park District boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers Electronic signature readers eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader captures your signature and confirms that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration is not affected.

Program Cancellations The Park District reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and change instructors. Programs not meeting the minimum registration will be canceled, and refunds will be issued in the form of a check. Cancellation decisions will be made one week in advance of the beginning of the program in most cases. All participants in canceled classes will be notified by Park District staff and will receive a full refund.

The Batavia Park District staff makes every effort to prepare our Fun Guides as accurately as possible. Due to the large amount of information available in the seasonal guides, errors after publication may occur. We will attempt to keep information on our website as current as possible. We apologize for any errors and thank you for your patience and understanding when these situations arise.

Waiting List Many of our classes have registration limits due to facility space and staff limitations, therefore we cannot always guarantee you will be enrolled in the class of your choice. The Park District maintains waiting lists for classes that have reached their maximum registration and encourages everyone to be placed on a waiting list. We will open additional classes whenever possible. Instructors and leaders are not allowed to accept any registrations and are not allowed to give authorization for more people to register than the listed maximum. Your cooperation is appreciated. Registration deadlines have been set for each class. Please register prior to registration deadline. We try to establish class status at least one week prior to starting dates. Please register at least one week prior to class unless designated otherwise.

Code of Conduct The Batavia Park District is committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for participants in recreation programs. Participants are expected to adhere to fair and safe conduct guidelines. These guidelines apply to the safety of participants, the general public, employees and volunteers of the Batavia Park District. A safe environment is where participants, staff, volunteers and the general public are free from physical harm. It is anticipated that some participants may require assistance to participate in the recreation program. This assistance may include accommodations, which will assist participants with unusual behaviors in order to maintain a safe environment for all. The following actions are prohibited at Batavia Park District facilities and parks: • Hitting, kicking or throwing objects. • Inappropriate sexual touching. • Creating a risk of contagion or illness, whether intentional or not. • Bringing a weapon to a program or activity or acting in a manner which exposes the participant or others to danger. • Extreme verbal abuse. • Fighting.

Scholarship Program The Batavia Park District Board of Commissioners and staff believe in providing program scholarship opportunities to residents with financial limitations. Park District residents are invited to complete the Scholarship Application, attach the required documents, and return to the Civic Center office at 327 Wilson St. For a list of qualifying programs, please visit bataviaparks.org.

Good Time Guarantee

At Batavia Park District, we are committed to providing the public with high quality recreation programs. Our residents are important to us and we feel they deserve quality at all times. We are so conﬁdent that our recreation programs provide high quality and enjoyment that we are backing it with a policy called the “Good Time Guarantee.”

Our promise and policy is as follows: The Batavia Park District will give you a full refund if requested by the beginning of the third class if you are unsatisﬁed with the quality of instruction, your child’s inability to adapt emotionally in the class, or the skill level is not appropriate for the participant.

Guidelines • Participant must attend the first two classes of the program. • Policy applies to recreation programs only. A recreation class is defined as a program where Park District personnel teach activities or skills over a period of six or more classes. This policy does not apply to Quarry passes, special events, trips, New Horizons Preschool, Day/ Sport Camps, Kids’ Club and Klub Fun and Youth/Adult Leagues. • The “Good Time Guarantee” refund form must be filled out appropriately and received prior to the third class meeting. Forms are available at the Recreation offices. The park district will not fax, mail or e-mail copies. Upon receiving your completed form before the third class, we will process a full refund of your paid fees.
