A Message from

Our Executive Director

Dear Residents:

One of the many things I love about leading a parks and recreation agency is that our team and Board are in constant motion – we have a forward-thinking mindset, always embracing innovation and navigating change as we work together to provide you with experiences to enrich your quality of life. This summer is no exception!

It’s hard to believe that it’s almost time to sink your toes into the sand at the Hall Quarry Beach. Join us for opening day on May 27. Be sure to check out page 24 for our special events at the beach, including our popular Wacky Water Olympics, Christmas in July, and So Long Summer Swim, which wraps up our Quarry season.

After a decade hiatus, is the Windmill Whirl 5K Run returns to the lineup of events at Windmill City Festival. The race starts at 10 a.m. on July 9 and takes runners through a certified course on the Fox River Trail. Register early to receive a limited-edition t-shirt. Runners ages 21 and older have the option of partaking in a post-race beer from a local brewery. See page 10 for details.

On March 21, the Batavia Park Board voted unanimously to name the future community center at 150 Houston Street, the “Patrick J. Callahan Community Center,” in honor of Board President Pat Callahan who has served on the District’s board for 25 years and as Board President since 2005. Under his guidance, the Park District has added more than 200 acres of land and created neighborhood parks within walking distance of every Batavia resident. Pat is a true leader and visionary. Under his guidance, we have upgraded parks, flagship facilities like the Hall Quarry Beach and recreational programs all while experiencing the largest growth period in the District’s history. He is very deserving of this honor.

MISSION STATEMENT

Committed to providing fun, safe, and innovative open space and recreational opportunities that will enrich the quality of life for our residents.

The Park Board

Your Park Board is composed of five, nonpaid commissioners selected by you to serve varying terms. The Board is primarily a policy-making body that reflects the needs and interests of all taxpayers.

The Park Board meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Civic Center, 327 W. Wilson St., at 7:00 pm.

Please feel welcome to attend.

I am bursting at the seams to inform you that the Batavia Park District is a recipient of an Open Space Land Acquisition Grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. We will receive $600,000 to fund a refreshed master plan for the Clark Island Recreation Area. Within the next year-and-a-half, you will get to experience an outdoor fitness court, new skate park, bike pump track, a Monarch wayfinding station and a fishing station made of bedrock and limestone. Exciting times ahead!

It is my greatest hope that this Fun Guide inspires you to pick up a new hobby, soak up the sounds and sights of nature, or simply take a stroll at your neighborhood park or trail. We have something for all ages!

All the best,

Hall Quarry Beach

The Story of Hall Quarry Beach

Hall Quarry Beach is an award-winning facility of the Batavia Park District!

Hall Quarry Beach occupies a former stone quarry now owned by the Batavia Park District. It has been used as a swimming facility since 1920. The story began over 150 years ago in 1842, when a limestone quarry was opened on the west end of town and Batavia received the name “Rock City.” By 1860, nine quarries were in operation, and one of these quarries sat on an acre of property along the Fox River. More than 150 men mined limestone from the quarry until it was so deep and wide that water began permeating up through the floor of the site. Soon enough, six ponds were formed that fondly were known as “old swimming holes.”

By 1920, the Quarry was purchased by Frederick Beach. Beach donated the Quarry to Batavia Township, and they converted the six ponds into one swimming area. This area was named the Frederick H. Beach Park and Pool. Fast forward to 1969, when the Batavia Park District formed and the property was then transferred to the Park District and later renamed. Today Hall Quarry Beach features a sand-bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet, which includes islands, slides, and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables, as well. Come visit the beach that Batavia built!.

Dance

The goal of the Batavia Park District dance program is to help all dancers improve grace and flexibility while introducing them to the beauty and benefits of dance.

Jazz/Contemporary Ages 8+

This class will be very expressive with elements of modern, jazz, lyrical, and ballet while striving to connect the mind and body through fluid dance movements. Jazz shoes or ballet shoes can be worn for this class while at times we will be dancing barefoot. Contemporary entails some fun floor work and dancers will learn some basic partner skills and lifts!

Jazz Ages 6+

Jazz dance introduces participants to new rhythms, steps, and movements in a fun and exciting atmosphere that will increase flexibility and strength. We will focus on Jazz and some ballet technique. Dance attire and jazz shoes required. No street clothes. Please pull hair back into a ponytail or bun.

Dance Class Helpful Tips

Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “Tutu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.”

Dance Attire: Please wear clothing that allows for a full range of motion. No denim is allowed. Most dancers are comfortable in leotards/tights or leggings.

Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations.

Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation!

New Puppy Introduction

Puppy ages 4 to 8 months

Have you recently added a new furry family member? Congratulations! Get your new addition started on the right paw by learning how to help your puppy adapt to their new family life. You’ll learn how to communicate with your pup in a way they’ll understand. We’ll go over what to do about jumping and nipping, along with learning some of the basic cues like sit and stay. Your puppy will also get a chance for some important, beneficial socialization or playtime with classmates while you watch and learn. It is important to learn when play is appropriate and what to do if it’s not.

3-10 puppies per class

Puppy Socialization

Puppy ages 4 months +

Socialization is the key to helping a new puppy grow up happy and healthy. In this class, you will learn how to help properly introduce your puppy to all the new people and things they will encounter in their young lives. Topics covered will include things such as children, items on wheels, medical/vet equipment, and other things that puppies find scary. While your puppies get a chance to interact with each other, we will go over what appropriate play is and what to do if it’s not.

3-8 puppies per class

Intro to Obedience (Level 2)

Puppy ages 5 months +

Get your dog started on the right paw with general obedience skills that all dogs (and humans) should know! This class will lay the foundations of training by teaching you, the owner, the principles of dog training, how to easily communicate with your dog, how to increase difficulty of commands once your dog starts to understand them and much more. We will work on engagement with your dog, teach them the “place” command and begin practicing the foundations for loose leash walking.

4-10 dogs per class

Beginner Obedience (Level 3)

Puppy ages 5 months +

This class will build off of Intro to Obedience, practicing engagement, the “place” command and loose leash walking while also adding in sit-stay, down-stay, and recall. We will work on increasing your dog’s focus and continue to improve their skills by practicing longer durations of each cue and adding in more distractions.

4-12 dogs per class.

Intro to Agility (Level 1)

Puppy ages 6 months +

For puppies and first-timers! Learn the fundamentals of agility and how to encourage your dog through simple obstacles while developing primary skills, confidence, and enthusiasm. Agility is a great way to bond with your dog and enhance their listening skills while also getting out their extra energy! This class is perfect for those that want to test the water while enjoying fun exercise with their dog.

Trick Training for Fun

Puppy ages 6 months+

Join us for an hour of fun with your furry friend! No pressure, no stress, no anxiety. Just fun! This class is all about teaching your dog some fun tricks. And the best part is, we’ll work on whatever tricks you choose! We’ll supply a list to help you choose what you’d like to do, or you can come with some ideas of you own. Anything goes! We’ll spend the hour seeing what our dogs can do and having a blast making it happen.

4-8 dogs per class

The “Place” Command (Teaching Stay)

Puppy ages 6+

Is it difficult to keep your dog under control when guests come to your door? Do you wish your dog could be in one spot (away from your feet!) while you make or eat dinner? The place command is perfect for these situations, and many more! In this class, you will learn how to train your dog to stay in one defined area (place) until he or she is released. You will practice this skill with your dog in a structured way and receive a hand out of the process so you can repeat it at home, or anywhere else.

Human End of the Leash

Ages 18+

This class is for everyone who struggles with a pup that thinks—or actually does!—run their house. It’s all about how establishing leadership and demonstrating to your dog that the humans in the pack are the ones to follow and will help lead to a better behaved dog. You’ll learn how and why leadership is key to a well-balanced canine family member. By employing these methods, you’ll get control back and begin to see behavioral issues diminish or even disappear. Learn simple things to do to show your dog that you’re the leader of the pack so s/he doesn’t need to be. Please leave your pups at home for this class.

Prong Collar/E-Collar 101

Ages 18+

Have you considered using a prong collar or an e-collar on your dog? Would you like to learn more about the pros and cons of training your dog with these collars? Or, are you unfamiliar with or against using these collars altogether? There will be time to ask questions about anything and everything related to these collars. Please leave your pups at home for this class.

Batavia Park District Memorial Program

Celebrate and commemorate a loved one’s life or express sympathy or condolences for the loss of a friend or family member with a memorial tree or bench. The District offers several options to memorialize your loved one or to mark a special date or occasion. Placement along the Batavia Riverwalk is no longer an option for a memorial bench or tree due to spatial limitations.

Memorial Trees

Memorial trees leave a lasting legacy, which will grow stronger and blossom year after year. Trees are planted twice a year (spring and fall). The cost for a Memorial Tree is $800, and includes the tree, stone marker, and installation. Please visit bataviaparks.org for a full list of available trees.

Memorial Benches

Memorial benches add beauty to a park and provide a useful amenity for patrons to enjoy as they relax in their surroundings. The cost for a 4-foot bench is $2,550, and a 6-foot bench is $3,000, which includes the bench, plaque, and installation.

Batavia Park District Pet Memorial Program

The Batavia Park District recognizes that many people consider their pets to be part of their family. Commemorate the life of your beloved pet by purchasing a brick or agility equipment through the District’s Pet Memorial Program. The cost for a pet brick is $200.

• Memorial Bricks

• Memorial Benches

• Agility Equipment

The District has selected several agility pieces that can be purchased through the Pet Memorial Program.

For more information on how to purchase a memorial item, please call 630-879-5235.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Program Cancellations

The Park District reserves the right to cancel, postpone, or combine classes and change instructors. Programs not meeting the minimum registration will be canceled, and refunds will be issued in the form of a check.

Cancellation decisions will be made one week in advance of the beginning of the program in most cases. All participants in canceled classes will be notified by Park District staff and will receive a full refund.

Class Transfers

If you wish to transfer to a different class, please bring $5 per transfer to the Park District and complete a Transfer Form during business hours.

Waiting List

Many of our classes have registration limits due to facility space and staff limitations, therefore we cannot always guarantee you will be enrolled in the class of your choice. The Park District maintains waiting lists for classes that have reached their maximum registration and encourages everyone to be placed on a waiting list. We will open additional classes whenever possible.

Instructors and leaders are not allowed to accept any registrations and are not allowed to give authorization for more people to register than the listed maximum. Your cooperation is appreciated. Registration deadlines have been set for each class. Please register prior to registration deadline. We try to establish class status at least one week prior to starting dates. Please register at least one week prior to class unless designated otherwise.

Important Information

The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. However, participants and parents/guardians of minors registering for the program/activity must recognize that there is an inherent risk of injury when choosing to participate in any activities.

You are solely responsible for determining if you or your minor child/ward are physically fit and/or adequately skilled for recreational activities. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk

Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Despite careful and proper preparation, instruction, medical advice, conditioning and equipment, there is still a risk of serious injury when participating in any recreational activity. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

Waiver and Release of All Claims and Assumption of Risk

Please read this form carefully and be aware that in signing up and participating in the Program(s), you will be expressly assuming the risk and legal liability and waiving and releasing all claims for injuries, damages or loss which you or your minor child/ward might sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with and associated with the program(s)/ activity(ies) (including transportation services, when provided).

I recognize and acknowledge that there are certain risk of physical injury to participants in the program(s)/activity(ies), and I voluntarily agree to assume the full risk of any injuries, damages or loss, regardless of severity that my minor child/ward or I may sustain as a result of participating in any and all activities connected with or associated with the program(s)/activity(ies). I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Park District, including its official, agents, volunteers and employees (hereinafter collectively referred as “Parties”).

I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the parties from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me to my minor child/ ward in any way associated with the programs(s)/ activity(ies).

I acknowledge I (or my minor child/ward) will abide by local, state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19, as well as facility/program policies, rules, safety directives, etc. I acknowledge if I (or my minor child/ ward) fail to abide by these, my access to Batavia Park District facilities and programs may be revoked at any time and at the Batavia Park District’s sole discretion. I acknowledge and agree federal, state and local guidelines regarding COVID-19 are subject to change and the Batavia Park District may, at its sole discretion, revoke the effectiveness of this document to manage facility capacity, participation in programming and/or use of facilities as well as safety.

I have read and fully understand the above important information, warning of risk, assumption of risk and waiver and release of all claims. If registering on-line or via fax, my on-line or facsimile signature shall substitute for and have the same legal effect as the original for signature.

I understand that my child/ward or I may be photographed or videotaped while participating in a Park District program. I give permission for photos and video images of my child/ward or me to be used to promote the Park District’s recreation programs. Such photos and video images remain the property of the Park District.
