Dear Residents: The Batavia community is known for its innovation and for being one of the most creative and picturesque areas in the state. The birth of Batavia’s iconic Peace Bridge began when local business owner and lifelong Batavia resident Craig Foltos proposed the concept to the Park Board in 2008. Craig donated the original 12-foot tall wooden “Peace on Earth” letters. Lighting was added to the pedestrian bridge in 2015, a donation valued at over $10,000. Recently, the Park Board came to a consensus to keep the message up year-round. With that in mind, the original wooden letters are marking their 14th anniversary and are in dire need of replacement.

A Message from Our Executive Director

The Batavia Parks Foundation, under the leadership of Britta McKenna, has stepped up to the plate with Craig Foltos to lead community fundraising efforts to replace the wooden letters with permanent, sustainable materials featuring LED lighting year round. The community fundraising goal is to raise $50,000 with a target date of fall 2023. How can you help contribute to the cause? There are three ways: 1) Purchase a “Play it Forward” ticket with benefits that are two-fold: the front is a raffle ticket with a chance to win one of ten great prizes in a drawing taking place at the Pints by the Pond craft beer festival; the back of the ticket serves as discount card valued at over $50 in discounts at local ‘play partners’; 2) Make a financial gift to the “Peace on Earth” campaign, and 3) Donate as a major donor or a project sponsor. Additional information can be located on page 5 of this fun guide. The spirit of innovation is woven like a tapestry in every recreational program, project or event we plan, design and implement. We are thrilled to introduce a new craft beer festival “Pints by the Pond” on Saturday, September 24th from 2 to 5 p.m. This festival will take place at the Batavia Riverwalk and will feature over a dozen local breweries. Popular food trucks, lively main stage entertainment, and a competitive bags tournament will also complement the event. Tickets include entry to the festival, and 20, 3-ounce samples of craft beer donned in a commemorative glass for you to keep. For craft beer connoisseurs, a limited number of VIP tickets will be sold which include access to the festival an hour earlier (at 1 p.m.) to get first dibs on ice cold craft beer. A special “designated driver” ticket also will be sold, which includes entry to the festival and access to unlimited water or soda. Check out more details on page 7. This fall, we encourage you to experience a Batavia park you haven’t visited before! All the best,

Allison Niemela, CPRP Executive Director

DANC E

Dance Class Helpful Tips Tutu Tote: Dance shoes can be expensive, especially with growing feet! Please consider donating your “Tutu Tight” dance shoes to the “Tutu Tight Tote.” This container will remain in the dance room. When your dance shoes become “TuTu” tight, place them in the tote and hopefully a pair inside will fit your dancer. There is no exchange of money. Simply donate “tight” and hopefully find “just right.” Visitors: Thank you for respecting our NO VISITORS policy. We love our fan club, but visitors pull a dancer’s focus from the instructor. In addition, students feel uncomfortable to learn with other parents (strangers) in the room. Thank you for your cooperation! Dance Shoes: Dance shoe requirements are noted for each class. You may wait until the week after class begins (Week No. 2) to purchase shoes in the event that a class is canceled. Although we never want to cancel a class, low enrollment may cause class cancellations.

NEW!

Please wear long sleeves, long pants and closed-toed shoes. After our time at the studio, we will enjoy a late lunch at Gale Street Inn where you can order off the menu and pay on your own. policies

• A ll refunds will be issued in the form of a check when a refund application is approved before the class starts. Checks are processed by the Batavia Park District front office bi-monthly and sent via mail.

Nonresident Fee Policy The Batavia Park District residents make a significant contribution to the operation of the park district via property taxes. The boundaries were established with the formation of the park district in 1969. A copy of a map showing the park district boundaries is printed in the brochure and available at the park district office. Persons living outside the park district boundaries may be required to pay an additional fee to register for programs.

Electronic Signature Readers: Electronic signature readers have been installed, which will eliminate the need for you to complete a paper form every time you register. The electronic reader will capture your signature and confirm that you’ve agreed to the liability waiver and release of all claims. Signatures will stay on file for 12 months, and after that time you will simply stop in to sign the waiver again. If you are a regular phone-in customer, we will need to capture your signature in person in order for you to do subsequent registrations by phone. Online registration will not be affected by this new procedure.

batavia park district waiver and release of all claims Important Information The Batavia Park District (the “Park District”) is committed to conducting its recreation programs and activities in a safe manner and holds the safety of participants in high regard. The Park District continually strives to reduce such risks and insists that all participants follow safety rules and instructions that are designed to protect the participant’s safety. It is always advisable, especially if the participant is pregnant, disabled in any way or recently suffered an illness, injury or impairment, to consult a physician before undertaking any physical activity.

Warning of Risk Recreational activities are intended to challenge and engage the physical, mental and emotional resources of each participant. Depending on the particular activity, certain risks and dangers may exist due to inclement weather, slips and falls, poor skill level or conditioning, carelessness, horseplay, unsportsmanlike conduct, lack of safety equipment, inadequate or defective equipment, failure in supervision and instruction or officiating, and premises defects. It is impossible for the Park District to guarantee absolute safety.

I further agree to waive and relinquish all claims I or my minor child/ward may have (accrue to me or my child/ward) as a result of participating in this program/activity against the Park District, including its official, agents, volunteers and employees (hereinafter collectively referred as “Parties”). I do hereby fully release and forever discharge the parties from any and all claims for injuries, damages, or loss that my minor child/ward or I may have or which may accrue to me to my minor child/ ward in any way associated with the programs(s)/ activity(ies). I acknowledge I (or my minor child/ward) will abide by local, state and federal guidelines regarding COVID-19, as well as facility/program policies, rules, safety directives, etc. I acknowledge if I (or my minor child/ ward) fail to abide by these, my access to Batavia Park District facilities and programs may be revoked at any time and at the Batavia Park District’s sole discretion. I acknowledge and agree federal, state and local guidelines regarding COVID-19 are subject to change and the Batavia Park District may, at its sole discretion, revoke the effectiveness of this document to manage facility capacity, participation in programming and/or use of facilities as well as safety.
