STEP COMPLEX

ACADEMIC | SPRING 2024 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN VIII

PROFESSOR BRIANA JOHNSON ORLANDO, FLORIDA

The Step Complex is a step towards a brighter future for the foster youth of Orlando, the project program being interconnected and dependent on a series of well alligned events for success, ensuring that the youth don’t succumb to negative statistics.

Research shows that two years after aging out of the foster care system at eighteen, forty percent are homeless and forty percent end up incarcerated. To mitigate that, the step complex offers affordable housing, with apartments raging in square footage and amenities.

The program integrates a strong edge, sharing earth-like qualities with the existing Aurelian wall, framing a ceremonial body of water. Carved connections link the religious landmarks, while layering upon the body of water creates reflective spaces , and therefore converging the primary program with the urban fabric of the site.

MODERN MONASTERY

ACADEMIC | FALL 2023 ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN VII

VIA UF STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM PROFESSOR PETER SPROWLS ROME, ITALY

The Modern Monestary integrates traditional spiritual practices into a contemporary setting, while highlighting the importance of Rome as a spiritual and historical center. A programmatic response to the lack of spaces that serve the journey of the pilgrim.

WEST GATE

The existing West Gate of Port San Giovanni is celebrated and preserved to continue serving the pilgrims, by acting as the main entry way for the Modern Monastery. Pulling the pilgrims into their primary spaces: the pilgrim center, containing a restaurant and resource center catered for pilgrims, and the attached hostel housing. The program provides multiple spaces for reflection and gathering throughout the journey of the pilgrim. EAST GATE
11
The East Gate, Port per La Gente fosters static experiences for locals amid the park, providing congregation spaces alongside facilities for pilgrims. It is focused on bringing together locals and residents within the context of the existing park of the site and its surroundings. Supplying this group with a space of congregation among a series of spaces catering to the incoming pilgrims.

Between the center of the program and the center of the cleansing pools, the central pavilion and solace gardens serve a relationship between supplying the physical and spiritual needs for pilgrims. While the central pavilion may provide in the physical aspects, by providing access to goods and social connections, the solace gardens help provide spiritual growth and reinforcement for pilgrims as they continue their journey. By illustrating the cleansing pool as the connection between these central points, one travels along this axis, traversing from the communal vibrancy of the central pavilion to the quiet introspection of the Solace Gardens.

This central pavilion is conceived not only as a commercial center but as a vibrant point where the spiritual and secular aspects of community life intersect harmoniously.
