You Own It!

Co-op Board Elections & Wooden Nickel Survey The biggest difference between your Co-op and a buying club is that you own it! Make your voice heard by voting for Board of Directors and the Wooden Nickel Program. Attend the Annual Co-op Owner Meeting & Potluck. Better yet, consider running for the Co-op Board of Directors. Here’s what you need to know to get involved this spring!

Basics Co-op Board of Directors Your cooperative is governed by an elected volunteer Board of Directors made up of 5 Basics Co-op Owners. Any Owner with an active membership (fully vested or up to date on installments) and an interest in more directly influencing the Co-op is encouraged to apply. Three seats are up for election this year. Board members commit to an approximately two-hour meeting every other month, for two year terms beginning in June. Each Board member has an equal vote on issues that come before them, although roles such as President, Treasurer and Secretary are also determined annually.

Most Board activities fall into three categories: Policy – The Board interprets and refines the mission and goals of the Co-op, then helps establish policies to advance them. Long-Term Planning- The Board employs an accounting firm and legal counsel, engages in long-range financial planning and must approve any major plans or commitments. Supervision – The Board hires and supervises the General Manager.
