4 PREFACE Welcome to the MODUS Museum! Here, we don’t only offer a space to interact with art works but also a space to collaborate with the other visitors. MODUS Museum cares about the production process of the artworks therefore it also provides spaces for production and sharing.

In the Cookbook, there are several examples of atelier infills to be built. However, keep in mind that this is not an instruction book but it is a cookbook. Therefore the examples given are open to improvisation and there to give a direction towards how to create alternative spaces for production; be it a music, sculpture, painting atelier, or a small exhibition gallery. Please use the recipes of ateliers as real recipes which are open to improvisation and spontaneous yet safe solutions.

So the cookbook is only a trigger to reveal the abundant possibilities of Tarwewijk combining art and public with the choreographies of production.

In order to give an insight to the duration of the building choreography, timing of the proposed atelier infills are provided as above. It indicates approximately how long would it take to build an atelier space according to the demands and materials.

In Rotterdam, where we all use Buienradar to check the weather hour by hour, it is important to indicate the type of the galleries regarding the building physics. Therefore in the cookbook, each type of atelier infills have various types of building physics regarding the wind and water. Wind and waterproof ateliers are indicated as closed ateliers where the construction time is also longer due to application of more layers. In each case, the symbols are indicated at the bottom of the page.

Make sure that the structure is safe. Do not leave children unattended. The suggested examples are open to improvisation with other tools and materials. If you can’t find the materials and tools referred to in the cookbook, feel free to find and use similar ones.

There are formal and informal structures at the museum, which indicates what to alternate and what to leave as its existing condition.

Infrastructural elements such as the circulation elements, canopies and the prosthesis are the formal structures. Formal structures enable the building process by offering a scaffolding.

Whereas site offers informal structures as well, to alternate.

13 Material Re-use The materials are provided by the consultation office from the material storage. With this approach, re-use of materials becomes possible. The materials used to build the atelier infills should be demounted in order to place them to the storage for future use!

Stabilize the flooring material onto the existing grid. Remember to be cautious if you are on the 1st&2nd floor!

Nail down the upper flooring element.

Add timber joists onto the flooring element. Fill the inbetween space with an insulation material.

Add structural elements - in this case timber joists are used.

Void spaces of the pallets can be used for: integrated lighting, ventilation space, lookthrough or insulation space. Tie the pallets together.

Apply the exterior layers and cladding.

Insert the opening elements, windows, doors etc.

Apply the finishing touch, paint can be applied on interior and exterior surfaces. Other custom variations can be applied as well.

Place timber joist in between the grid.

Place structural elements and create a wooden frame. Leave space for openings.

Add the flooring elements onto timber joists.

Add the rainscreen system and bolt the system onto structural elements.

Insert weathering membranes and insulation as indicated.

Apply exterior cladding with small timber joists. Insert windows and doors to openings.

Close all the openings -including top surface on timber joists- for better wind and waterproofing.

Some grids have x-bracings for stability. It might allow different variations of space as well. Place prefabricated timber hollow core flooring onto the grid.

Use existing bricks and use brıcklaying method to build the walls.

Buckle the textile to steel bar to create an entrance for the atelier.

To stable the bricks, use cement and mortar mix and apply it to the surface of the brick.

Cover one side with the metal mesh by attaching it to the structure with screws. This also works as a railing.

Put the textile roll on top of the atelier for sheltering. Tie the bar of the textile with side bars.

Lastly, put the transparent corrugated plexiglass on the front.

Stable it with steel profiles to the timber deck and the top bar.

Place steel deck in between the grid.

Add the flooring elements onto the steel deck. Stable them with bolts.

Stable A, B and C to the grid with bolts. Tie the two metal bars with the B and C to form the railing. Square lashing is shown as an example.

Apply the textile to the scaffolding.

Attach it to the steel deck by tying the rope to the bolts.

Insert accessories such as textiles and lighting to customize the atelier.

Place steel deck in between the grid.

Insert the metal mesh railing to the steel deck by using bolts.

Place used tires on the deck to create sitting places. Insert soil in th hollows of the tire to create a

foundation for bamboo sticks. Feel free to add some seeds too!

Bury the ends of the bamboo sticks to soil. Paste refractive concave surfaces on top of the sticks. Feel free to light it up!
