Bartow blooms with art at annual festival
Bartow is where our history comes to life . . . and art. Each year dozens of community volunteers transform Downtown Bartow into a bustling center of compact, streetside art galleries called the Bloomin’ Arts Festival. This is the 44th year for the two-day festival, which also offers quilt, garden and car shows, a bike ride, live entertainment and lots of food, including Food Truck Crazy. The Bloomin’ Arts Committee, supported by businesses, community groups and lots of volunteers, plans the event each year. Michell Githens and Lara Frederickson are co-chairs. The event is presented by Frost Van den Boom P.A. and hosted by the Bartow Art Guild, City of Bartow, Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce and Mainstreet Bartow, Inc. Bloomin’ Arts 2015 takes place Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8, along several blocks from Broadway to Florida Avenue, and from Davidson Street to Summerlin. Festival hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. The Flower Show runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sunday in the Main Street Bartow office at the corner of South Central Avenue and Summerlin Street. The quilt show is also indoors, in the Polk County History Center housed in the Historic Courthouse, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. both days. The Bloomin’ Arts Festival Quilt Show is a non-juried show, displaying new quilts and family heirlooms. Classic cars and trucks along Broadway are a different kind of art. Colorful and shiny, they draw lots of attention. This year’s show, presented by Victory Lane, will be on Saturday, and entrants will have the chance to win plenty of door prizes and trophies.

A new feature to Bloomin’ Arts this year is the RV Show, presented by Camping World, the nation’s largest RV and outdoor retailer. The show is on Sunday, March 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More than 80 artists are expected to show sculpture, pottery, photography, paintings, woodwork, glass and other arts. A number of awards and cash prizes are presented. Polk County students from elementary through high school also show their artwork. One school will win the Best Display Award of $100 with a ribbon to be awarded to the art teacher. High schools and colleges have been invited to compete for monetary awards of $1,140. Children will also find an art tent, sponsored by Community Southern Bank and Mosaic, where they can be creative, have their faces painted, and get temporary tattoos. Providing live entertainment are Tom Mizell of Bartow, playing a variety of music on the harmonica; Union Academy Bluegrass and Jazz Bands; and Dennis Croom of Bartow. Cyclists will be at Fort Blount Park for the 7:00 a.m. Bloomin’ Bike Ride registration and breakfast on Saturday. Line-up and drawing for the Artistic Motion Award is at 7:50 at Fort Blount Park. Riders in the 37- and 65-mile Tow Tours line up at 8:00 a.m., while the 16-mile Family Fun Ride starts at 8:15 a.m. A part of the proceeds for the rides go for providing new bikes for kids who can’t afford one. The Power Pedalers program has given more than 100 bikes to kids. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. Guest speaker is Edward M. Kobel, President/COO of DeBartolo Development. Kobel is responsible for the company’s strategy, execution and capitalization. With a “customer and a community comes first” philosophy, Kobel leads a team that has created a nationwide real estate investment platform that spans from Hawaii to Florida. Kobel is the Chairman of LIFEWORK Leadership, a leadership development program that provides ethical leadership training for business and community leaders. He serves on the Board of Directors for Faith Tampa Bay, an organization working to meet the transformation needs of the Tampa Bay area. And in 2009, he was awarded the Community Involvement Award for his efforts as Chairman of the Super Bowl Breakfast, an official National Football League event with Athletes in Action. Bartow City Manager George Long’s “State of the City” Address Coming Up

The event will feature a lunch for $10, but everyone is welcome to come in and hear the city manager’s address at no cost. Doors open at 11:15 a.m., with seats available on a first come, first served basis. The serving line for lunch begins at 11:30 a.m.; and Long will begin the presentation at noon. A native of Ohio, Long has been a Florida resident throughout his public service career which spans 38 years. Beginning as a firefighter in Temple Terrace, Florida, he progressed through the ranks, serving as both a fire lieutenant and assistant fire chief. In 1981, Long relocated to Lake Park, Florida, to become its fire chief. Long served the city in a number of capacities, including five years as its city manager. In 1994, Long relocated to accept appointment as county administrator for Okeechobee County, Florida. While there, he became one of the first 200 professional administrators in the US to receive the ICMA credentialed manager (CM) designation. Following 13 years of service with the county, Long relocated once again to Bartow, where he’s served as city manager since 2008. St. Pat’s Unparade is a longstanding untradition
The “Citrus Cinderellas” have been a part of the parade since its inception. Becoming a Cinderella is no easy task and there are a lot of Cinderella wannabes out there, such as the newcomers, the “Big Arsh Potater Queens.”
From its modest beginnings, now lost in the mists of time, Bartow’s St. Patrick’s Day Unparade has grown (de-evolved?) into a legendary fiesta attended by dozens of people who are Irish, or belly dancers, for a day. Rarely held on St. Patrick’s Day, this year is no exception. Combined with Main Street Bartow’s Friday Fest, the extravaganza is on March 20. The untraditional Unparade is becoming popular, it’s growing, and the large gaps between parade watchers are getting smaller. The ever-popular and beautiful Citrus Cinderellas – the queens of the parade, will be reigning; the Mutt Strutt, (which replaced the dyedgreen pig banned by a well known animal rights organization), will be strutting; and the small “fries” wannabe Citrus Cinderellas, the “Big Arsh Potater Queens,” whose motto is: “I think, therefore I Yam,” will have a float driven by the Spudly Prince of Tuberville. Some say Bartow’s King Commentater, S.L. Frisbie, will sit upon his throne aboard the spudly float, and it can be noted that many along the parade route not only recognize him as the Liege of the Potater Queens, but also of the entire Unparade itself. It was S.L. and a handful of other civic-minded Bartowans who began the Unparade those many years ago. Anyone who wants to be in the Unparade should be appropriately attired in shades of green or other Irish colors, and be somewhat wacky. Speaking of wacky, the St. Patrick’s Day Unparade usually features belly dancers, who also perform at Friday Fest. And lately, a large number of shamrock-festooned golfcarts and bicycles have joined the festivities. The Uparade starts around 5:30 p.m.-ish at Nye Jordan Park, meanders up South Oak Avenue to Main Street, and heads east to Friday Fest on Central and Main. After the Unparade, stick around for all kinds of Irish delights – green beverages, music and dancing in the street, plus the Irish car show and kids activities. Traditional sponsor Lilly, O’Toole & Brown, LLP, returns this year as Friday Fest sponsor for March.

The Just Say No parade and Rally is set for Tuesday, May 5, with the parade beginning at 9:00 a.m. on First Avenue and Main Street. The parade turns south on Broadway and continues on to Bartow High School. Come out and watch your local fifth graders “Say No To Drugs,” and cheer them on! Following the parade, a Just Say No Rally will be held at Bartow High School.

Spirit of Bartow Awards The May joint civic club luncheon, the Annual Spirit of Bartow Awards, is set for Thursday, May 14, 2015, at the Bartow Civic Center, where individuals and/or groups will be honored for their contributions to the Bartow community and whose accomplishments made a positive impact on the area’s quality of life. Awards will also be presented to the Bartow Chamber Diplomats, a special group of volunteers who donate their time to operating the Chamber’s Visitors and Welcome Center. Some Diplomats work in the front office, while others continue to help with the newsletter, special projects and events. The event, including lunch, is $10. Watson Clinic and the Center for Cancer Care and Research are luncheon sponsors. The serving line opens at 11:45 a.m., and the program begins at noon.
