SPRING 2017

Taking Care of

Business

We have all heard the saying, “Jack of all trades, master of none,” well that does not hold true for Carla Meeks. She is most definitely a “Jack of all trades,” and has mastered them all.

Never one to be idle, in 2005 Carla received her mortgage broker’s license, and in 2006 obtained her real estate license. She began her career in real estate at Exit Realty that same year.

Born at Bartow Memorial Hospital to Ruth and Malcolm Johnson, Carla has been a lifelong resident of Bartow. She is a graduate of Bartow High School, Polk Community College (Polk State College) and Florida Southern College. She graduated in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, with a concentration in Personnel and Marketing.

On September 3, 2010, Robert and Sean Harper opened WebPro Realty and Carla was one of the first to be hired, finding her niche’. Although Carla realizes that she is a small fish in a large pond of realtors, she has excelled in her field being one of the top producers in Polk County. She has found her passion, and prides herself in having an exceptional work ethic being honest, knowledgeable, trustworthy and dependable.

Always ambitious, Carla worked a number of part time jobs during her high school and college years. She excelled at all of them.

No matter what the need may be, Carla handles all areas of real estate. If you want to downsize, upsize, buy investment property, or are a first time home buyer, Carla does it all. Her goal is to put her clients in the home that is right for them, filling their needs, while getting them the best deal. Her tag line is “I am NOT JUST A REALTOR BUT YOUR REALTOR.” Carla holds true to her statement and she will prove it! There have been times when she has chosen to walk away from a deal that she felt was not in the best interest of her client, and shares with them truthfully the reasons why. Carla says, “I have to face these people. I may run into them on the street sometime. I want them to say thank you.”

Her very first job was in the banking industry at Florida National Bank. Next she worked at Smilin’ Jacks Grocery Store in downtown Bartow. Other jobs during this time, included working as a dental assistant for Dr. Gary Joyner. After leaving Dr. Joyner’s practice, she went on to work for Dr. Billy B. Brown as a dental assistant and helped manage his front desk in the evening. She worked for the Frisbie family at The Polk County Democrat in the classified ads department. During this time at the age of 16, she became a Mary Kay consultant. That part-time career lasted 20 years. In 1981, Carla married her high school sweetheart, Mark Meeks, and in 1982, began her first full time job. She accepted a position at Citrus and Chemical Bank, which she called a great experience. She left the bank in 1984 in order to open Rainbow Pool and Patio along with her husband and parents. The four owned and operated that business for two years. After leaving the pool business, Carla spent the next 13 years working for the State of Florida in the Child Abuse and Child Care Licensing Departments. Although she said that working child abuse cases was rewarding, it was also very heartbreaking. Working in the Child Care Licensing Department, inspecting child care centers, Carla had an idea. Having a love of children, why not open her very own child care center. So, in 1996 with her mother as her partner, the Best Academy was born. Stepping it up a notch, the academy was not just a day care center, but an educational center. Carla says “we were on the cutting edge of technology at that time, rather than being babysitters, we educated.” Carla and her mom owned and operated the Best Academy for 10 years. Having a strong background in business management and an entrepreneurial heart, Carla has also owned two Fantastic Sams Salons – one in Clermont and one in Fish Hawk. Both were very successful businesses.

In addition to her work, Carla is a member of several organizations including: Bartow Crickette Club, American Business Women’s Association, Lakeland Board of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, Multiple Listing Service (MLS), International Women’s Leadership Association, Bartow Chamber of Commerce, Lakeland Area Chamber of Commerce, Winter Haven Chamber of Commerce and the Mulberry Chamber of Commerce, along with her life-time membership at Main Street Baptist Church. In addition, she is involved with the George W. Harris Runaway Shelter, the Church Service Center, ASPCA and the Bartow Bloomin’ Arts Committee. In her spare time, Carla enjoys spending time with her family, which in addition to her husband Mark, includes son Lenton (Heather), daughter Katelyn and her grandchildren Madison, who is five years old, and newborn Mayven. She also enjoys traveling with Mark in their travel trailer. A few of her favorite vacation spots are Cedar Key, St. Augustine and Gainesville. To quote Carla, “I have had a good and interesting life and have been so blessed. Whatever we have started, we have started from scratch and have been successful. We have raised a wonderful family and live in a great community.” Always up for a new adventure, we never know where we will see Carla next! ♦

SPRING 2017

Bartow Blooms with Talent at Annual Art Festival Who could have imagined 46 years ago, that when several members of the Bartow Art Guild staged what was then the Spring Arts Show, it would evolve and expand into the annual Bloomin’ Arts Festival. This annual event is sponsored by the Frost Van den Boom law firm, and takes place March 4-5 of this year; a show featuring artists whose works represent a wide variety of mediums, a car show and the Bloomin’ Bike Ride. This annual event is a partnership between the Bartow Art Guild and The Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce and is joined by Main Street Bartow and the City of Bartow, said co-chair Michell Githens, who joined the Committee in 2007 following an invitation from Pat Crisman. Over the years, the popularity of the event has grown, from the number of artists who participate to attendees. “At one point we had as many as 140 or so artists,” she said. The peak was hit in the late 1980s-early 1990s. Even when the economy softened, interest and attendance maintained. Githens said she expected between 120-130 artists this year. Participating in the Bloomin’ Arts Festival holds a special place for many of the artists. “We always have a core number of artists apply with us each year,” she said. “They really have become like family.” That extends to the thousands of people who attend. “When people in Bartow tell them, ‘Hey, we’re glad you’re here,’ they really mean it - and that’s how we want it to be,” she said. While a some of the artists reside in Florida, a number of them come from out of state. Githens recalled at last year’s

SPRING 2017

event, one of the most popular artists was from Oklahoma who works with glass. From the second week in January to early May, multiple art shows take place, yet there is not much, if any, conflict with the Bloomin’ Arts Festival. The only major scheduling “conflict” - if even that’s the right word to use - comes from Gasparilla, in Tampa. However, this year that city’s major event already was held. Locally, that is not the situation, as a spirit of cooperation exists among the various art guilds and municipalities. “We do very well coordinating in Polk County, so we don’t step on one another’s toes,” said Githens. Another factor that makes the Bloomin’ Arts Festival stand out is that prices are reasonable. “We know our community and our price points,” she said. “The artists who do best have a variety of prices.” It is not unusual for prices that range from as low as $40 for smaller works of art to as much as $2,000. For artists, it varies as to what sells and it is not unusual for it to fluctuate from day one to day two. Githens again referenced the glass artist from Oklahoma. “On Saturday he sold small pieces. On Sunday, high end.” One of the most popular - and thus demanded - inclusions in the Bloomin’ Arts Festival is the quilt show, which goes on display in the former county courthouse, now the Polk County History Center. Githens was not positive, but believed the quilt show was added to the Bloomin’ Arts Festival in the 1980s, where it has

7

remained a feature. To show how popular it is, Githens said there is one question she and others are constantly asked year in and year out. “The thing we’re asked at the arts show is, where are the quilts?” Githens said. For years the quilt show of the Bloomin’ Arts Festival was under the guidance of Sandy Sewell, who passed away 1½ years ago. Upon her passing, Kat Chinault took over that aspect. “Kat does a great job,” said Githens, who added that Chinault coordinates with quilt shops, sewing shops and the like. When asked about the presence of the car show, she said it was a tradition, but more so, it does complement the art show. It, as well as the Flower Show, brings in people. Also bringing in people is the children’s art tent. “It’s a great opportunity for elementary and middle school students to be recognized for their work,” she said. Middle school and high school students win cash awards, plus some students have actually sold their works. “The whole purpose is to recognize and foster creativity in young people,” she said. While the Bloomin’ Arts Festival serves a number of purposes, there is one that stands out. “The Bloomin’ Arts Festival is a good time for Bartow to shine and to show off our community.” ♦

St. Pat’s Unparade a Long Standing Un-Tradition From its modest beginnings, now lost in the mists of time, Bartow’s St. Patrick’s Day Unparade has grown (de-evolved?) into a legendary fiesta attended by dozens of people who are Irish, or belly dancers, for a day. Rarely held on St. Patrick’s Day, this year is an exception. Combined with Main Street Bartow’s Friday Fest, the extravaganza is on March 17, 2017. The untraditional Unparade is growing, and the large gaps between parade watchers are getting smaller. The ever-popular parade features the Mutt Strutt, (which replaced the dyed-green pig banned by a well known animal rights organization; and the “Big Arsh Potater Queens,” whose motto is: “I think, therefore I Yam,” will have a float driven by the Spudly Prince of Tuberville. Bartow’s King Commentater, S.L. Frisbie, will sit upon his throne aboard the spudly float, and it can be noted that many along the parade route not only recognize him as the Liege of the Potater Queens, but also of the entire Unparade itself. It was S.L. and a handful of other civic-minded Bartowans who began the Unparade those many years ago. Speaking of wacky, the St. Patrick’s Day Unparade usually features belly dancers, who also perform at Friday Fest. And a large number of shamrock-festooned golfcarts and bicycles have joined the festivities. The Uparade starts around 5:30 p.m.-ish at Nye Jordan Park, meanders up South Oak Avenue to Main Street, and heads east to Friday Fest on Central and Main. After the Unparade, stick around for all kinds of Irish delights – green beverages, music and dancing in the street, plus the Irish car show and kids activities. Anyone wishing to be in the Unparade should show up at Nye Jordan Park, 5:00-ish.

Youth/Parent Summit A kids’ mentoring, self-esteem building, all-day program created by the Eastside Positive Action Committee, Inc., is set for Saturday, April 8, at Carver Recreation Center, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The program called YOUTH/PARENT SUMMIT features cookouts, games, entertainment, prizes and giveaway, arts and crafts, guest speakers and celebrities. Skits, breakout sessions, and lots of fun are in store for all school-age children. Children under 12 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Early registration is encouraged. Putting Together a

Better Plan It might sound like an episode from a late 1960s-early 1970s TV episode about trying to “find one’s self,” but it is a serious matter to many attempting to determine just what Bartow is and means. As it stands, for many, Bartow is an unknown quantity. That is about to change. “When we started the Economic Development Council, we began thinking how to market Bartow better,” said Jeff Clark, the executive director of the Greater Bartow Chamber of Commerce. “We decided the time was right to put together a better plan.” That plan is “We Are.” After working with Rob Clancey, who was named to head up the newly created EDC (thus replacing the Committee of 100 – the Chamber’s association of business, civic and government leaders and participants), as well as with Stephen Cox, the executive director of the CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency), a presentation was made to the CRA board last Fall. “The process took three to four months to get to the point that it was ready to present to the CRA,” said Clark. The presentation is two-pronged, starting with a brochure that highlights the many features and aspects of Bartow, from education to the arts to sports, parks and recreation to business opportunities to heritage. The brochure will contain a pocket in the back for other entities besides the CRA and EDC to insert materials specific to each group’s goals and objectives, such as Main Street Bartow and the Chamber. “It continued on page 22

was designed to fill the needs of all organizations,” Clark said. He added the brochures currently are in production. One of the decisions made during the design (and now execution) stage was to use original photography featuring people who live and work in Bartow, instead of stock photos. “It was important to have Bartow people,” said Clark. Mike Potthast, of Potthast Studios in Winter Haven, was contracted. “He has been shooting the past several months at sites and at events.” Most of the shots were candid and only a few had to be set up. There was a proviso, though. There were no instructions from Clark on what Potthast was to shoot. Clark wanted someone with a different eye and vision. “I told Mike, just do it,” he said. The effect Clark was hoping to create was achieved. “He shot things from a whole different

The other aspect of “We Are” will be more public. Anyone strolling the streets of downtown and adjacent neighborhoods will notice new banners hanging from street lamps. The previous banners highlighted various aspects of life in Bartow, but not to the extent these new ones. Altogether there are 28 different banner designs in a variety of colors, graphics and descriptions and are found on Main Street, Broadway Ave., Polk Street, L.B. Brown Blvd. and MLK Blvd. They total 200 banners. Those are not the only projects underway. “We’re also producing a new city map and reworking our website to integrate with the banners,” said Clark. The EDC was the catalyst for this marketing venture, because the first thing the EDC needed was marketing materials. ® Registered trademark, Ashland or its subsidiaries, registered in various countries ™ Trademark, Ashland or its subsidiaries, registered in various countries / ©2016, Ashland AD-11014.5

perspective than I would ever have thought.”

EDC Director Clancey took an extended road trip to visit different county seats in the Southeastern United States that were comparable to the demographics of Bartow; and spoke to a variety of officials to find out what worked (and didn’t) for them concerning economic development. This information was helpful in designing the new project. “What we’re trying to do is tell our story,” said Clark, “who we are as a city.”

Hence the theme: “We Are.” Clark said it is not complicated and easy to understand; a tool to attract visitors and businesses to locate in Bartow. Having the ability to implement this initiative has been the result of a long-standing partnership between the CRA and the Chamber. Both organizations have pooled their resources: the CRA has provided funding, and the Chamber has donated creative and production services at no charge to the project. The CRA has been very supportive of the shared vision of a bold new look for the city. The campaign is also very much about civic pride. The descriptive words on the street banners reflect positive facets of what makes up the spirit of Bartow. “It’s who we are.” Clark said. ♦
