Highly Experienced Robotic Surgeon
Serving Patients in Our Community Picture this: You’re in an operating room and about to undergo a surgical procedure. Dr. Anthony Zappia Standing by your bedside is a robot with numerous mechanical arms that are equipped with a 3-D scope camera and a variety of surgical tools. It might seem like a concept out of a science fiction novel, but it’s actually one of the most exciting breakthroughs the healthcare industry has witnessed in recent times. Just ask Dr. Anthony Zappia, a board-certified surgeon who has performed well over 500 procedures utilizing the technology, a statistic that distinguishes him as the most experienced practitioner of robotic surgery in our community and among the top five in the entire Tampa Bay region. “This technology is a significant game changer for advancing surgical technique and improving patient outcomes,” Dr. Zappia says. “Procedures that normally required large or multiple incisions can now be performed through an opening that’s the diameter of a dime.” This minimally invasive approach not only results in smaller incisions, but virtually no scarring and a faster recovery time as well. The surgeon remains in complete control of the robot’s actions at all times, and navigates each step of the surgery from a nearby console, while observing the procedure in high resolution. Guided by the surgeon’s movements, the robotic system performs with pinpoint precision. Dr. Zappia utilizes this technology to perform a host of procedures, including: – Hiatal, Inguinal and Ventral Hernia Repair – Hernias affect a large number of Americans, and some cases can result in severe complications if left untreated. For years, patients have feared the highly invasive incisions and slow periods of recovery associated with the traditional surgical solutions for hernia repair. Robotic techniques eliminate these drawbacks with smaller incisions and speedier healing process. – Single Site Gall Bladder Removal – Patients who experience frequent gallstones or other issues related to the gallbladder often suffer from

great discomfort and a compromised quality of life. Gallbladder removal surgery, otherwise known as a cholecystectomy, can eliminate these issues and provide much needed relief. Dr. Zappia performs this procedure through a single tiny incision around the navel. Patients have reported little to no pain following the procedure, and a fast return to their normal daily activities. – Nissen Fundoplication – If your acid reflux cannot be contained through medication or lifestyle changes alone, then your doctor might recommend you undergo surgery. Robotic surgery can correct your condition by repairing the passageway from your esophagus to your

stomach through small dime-sized incisions. This represents a significant improvement over traditional laparoscopic techniques. – Colon Surgery – The da Vinci® surgical robot has also revolutionized both benign and malignant colorectal surgery. This includes diverticular disease, IBD, rectal prolapse and cancers. For qualified patients, Dr. Zappia can remove the diseased region and reattach both ends of the healthy organ tissue using the smallest of incisions. – S plenectomy – Patients with hematologic disorders or masses of the spleen may require removal of this organ. This can be done safely with robotic assistance through small incisions. “The ability to perform these complex procedures in a minimally invasive manner has proven transformative,” Dr. Zappia observes. “It’s remarkable to witness patients as they enjoy a much higher quality of life without the painful and tedious recoveries that have historically resulted from these surgeries.” Dr. Zappia performs a variety of general surgeries without the use of the robot as well, and his minimally invasive approach to these procedures has proven equally satisfying to his patients. The procedures include, but are not limited to: Thyroidectomy, Anal Surgery, Skin Lesion/Cyst Excision, Pilonidal Cystectomy, Portacath Placement, Laparoscopic Appendectomy, Lymph Node Biopsy as well as Pediatric Hernia Repair. Dr. Zappia has amassed many years of experience in providing the latest surgical techniques with deeply personalized and attentive plans of treatment. He received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis, IN, MD, and completed his general surgery residency at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. “I am proud to be a member of the Watson Clinic family, and to continue their tradition of offering the most progressive medical technologies and treatments to patients in our community,” he says. While Dr. Zappia counsels patients from his office at the new Watson Clinic Highlands facility at 2300 E County Rd. 540A in south Lakeland, he performs his surgical procedures exclusively from Bartow Regional Medical Center at 2200 Osprey Blvd. in Bartow. Appointments with Dr. Zappia can be scheduled by calling 863-680-7486 or visiting www.WatsonClinic.com/Zappia.

Changing Lives at the Youth Villa In 1957, when two Florida Sheriffs proposed the idea to establish a Ranch to help care for troubled boys, they never imagined how far this simple dream would go. In the beginning, the intention was to reach a handful of at-risk boys, offering them a safe home in which to grow as they worked through daily problems. The goal was to stop the spread of juvenile delinquency and keep children out of jail. Now, following 60 years of growth and expansion, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is a statewide network of residential campuses, youth camping programs and community-based services. To date, the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches has served more than 152,000 boys, girls and their families. As the Boys Ranch grew, the successful mission did not go unnoticed. Praise for the accomplishments of the program began to spread across the state … but something was missing. What about the girls? The need was clear and fortunately, the sister of Pinellas County Sheriff Don Genung had been carefully watching his efforts to help develop the Boys Ranch. After bringing her idea for a girls campus to his attention and with his support, she approached the Sunshine State Women’s Chamber of Commerce to enlist their support to raise money for a “sister” program to the Boys Ranch. The group agreed without hesitation and immediately launched a focused fundraising effort to build a place for rebellious girls. The group’s tenacity and determination quickly paid off. Through the efforts of Polk County Sheriff Monroe Brannen and other community leaders, the Mobil Corporation, City of Bartow, and Polk County officials, an agreement was made for a 99-year lease of more than 125 acres of land at $1 per year. The local community responded in an overwhelmingly positive way by establishing the Youth Villa Classic, now a long-standing golf event that supports the Youth Villa. In 1969, the Sheriffs of Florida formally adopted the idea of establishing the Florida Sheriffs Girls Villa and by 1971, a beautiful piece of property in Bartow formerly known as Peace River Park was secured and soon the new location was overflowing with deserving girls in need of a good, stable home. Over the years, the Youth Villa continued to grow. The name changed along with the needs of the community. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Villa, formerly
known as the Girls Villa, has grown to include both boys and girls, along with a thriving independent living program. The Youth Villa continues to meet and address the needs of the community and the youth of the state of Florida, and in the fall 2018 the Youth Villa will welcome its first students to the Polk Sheriffs Charities Scholarship House. The Scholarship House will be home to 10-12 Youth Ranches scholarship recipients and foster children who are pursuing higher education through trade school or university. These students will have 24 hour access to staff for emotional, personal and collegiate support. Each year, thousands of children turn to the Youth Ranches for assistance. We look forward to helping each one of them meet their personal goals and become lawful, productive citizens. With the support of generous donors, volunteers and staff we will continue to fulfill this commitment to the needy and deserving children of Florida. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches is a charitable, nonprofit organization which was founded by the Florida Sheriffs Association and operates four residential child-care campuses and two Youth Camps. Voluntary contributions are the primary source of funding, especially thoughtful gifts made through special bequests in wills and trusts. The Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranches, Inc. is nationally accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children, Inc. and the American Camp Association. If you would like more information about the Youth Ranches please contact us at 1-800-765-3797 or visit www.youthranches.org.

Bartow Residents & Businesses Reap the Rewards of Solar Power That reduction in the electricity rate portion of your April 2018 utility bill? It’s not a fluke. Nor is it temporary or a random, occasional occurrence. Nor is it going to be the last one, according to Bartow City Manager George Long. All this is thanks to the foresight of city commissioners back in 2010-2011, who gave the okay to go forward with the creation of a solar farm. At the time, in 2010, the city had the first opportunity to bid out a wholesale electricity contract that ultimately was awarded to Orlando Utility Corporation, which took effect Jan. 1, 2011. The contract was for seven years and included a special provision allowing the city to collect up to 10 percent of its energy supply from alternative sources, primarily solar power. It was decided to create a public/private entity, with the latter to construct the solar farm and the city being its sole customer. It was in the sixth year of the contract with OUC when the determination was made that conditions had reached the point that the time was right to go forward. The city received 11 proposals and through the screening process, after having done due diligence, selected Orlando-based NovaSol Energy. According to Long, this was not necessarily looked upon as a cost saving per se, but as a hedge against future rising fuel costs from current sources such as coal, natural gas and, to a limited extent, possibly nuclear. The concept, though, was that savings would be passed along to the city’s customers. When the time rolled around to enter into a new contract with a supplier of energy, which went into effect Jan. 1, 2018 this one a five year contract with both OUC (for the first three years) and Florida Municipal Power Association - the solar facility was completed.
“We have the power the city needs for the next five years,” said Long. He added that another analysis performed sees a reduction from nine to 17 percent for business customers and 9.5 to 13 percent for residents; the higher the level of consumption, the lower the cost. Also, the rate reduction will lead to a reduction in taxes. “I expect we’ll see additional benefits in reduction of costs to consumers.” Via the city’s contract with FMPA, even further solar power will be provided from a solar farm under construction in Poinsett, in Osceola County. Long said it will result in a modest reduction as well. All told, solar energy will constitute an estimated 20 percent of all of Bartow’s energy supply. As a result, the cost to Bartow customers is on average lower than that of the state. Bartow’s cost is $112.61 per 1,000 kilowatt while the state average cost is $113.89. While adding solar energy to the mix is as a hedge against future possible fuel price increases, it’s also important environmentally, said Long, who mentioned concerns about greenhouse gasses, global climate control and the like. Also, solar energy is renewable. But returning to the issue of fuel costs from traditional sources (coal, natural gas, etc.), there is this: “The cost of sunlight doesn’t vary from one week to the next,” said Long. There’s yet another benefit to this and that is, on a per capita basis, Bartow is among the top 10 percent in the nation per energy creation. Not just the county, not just the state, but the entire U.S. (This includes two solar farms in various stages of construction and/or planning for TECO, none of which will be furnished to Bartow.) Also being considered is development of large-capacity energy

New 40-acre solar farm is on Gaskin Road in Bartow. The public / private sector partnership between the city of Bartow and NovaSol Energy makes Bartow the largest provider of solar watts installed per utility customer in Florida.. storage capability. That would open the door to over-generation of solar electricity during sunlight hours for release during nonsunlight hours. Yet it doesn’t stop there. Recently, city commissioners approved a net metering policy. This allows for businesses and home owners to install their own solar panels. While most will not supply all the power a structure needs, it will be a source for further potential savings. If on the chance more energy is created than used from these individual solar devices, the balance of the energy will be purchased by the city. Long said it’s a win-win, an incentive to encourage the use of solar energy. “We’re really pleased to make the progress we have over the last several years,” said Long. “Bartow is doing its part, and then some.”
About the solar farm The solar farm is located on Gaskin Road on 40 acres. It utilized more than 29,000 high efficiency 72 cell solar panels and
string inverters. As a result (at time of installation), it has led to Bartow being ranked number one in terms of solar watts installed per utility customer. It was constructed under the auspices of NovaSol Energy, out of Orlando. “NovaSol Energy is thrilled to work with the City of Bartow to provide renewable, solar energy solutions,” said Haseeb Qadri, president and CEO of NovaSol. The solar facility was constructed by EPC firm Renew Petra and is owned by a third-party investor, Monarch Private Capital. This public-private partnership enabled Bartow to pursue solar power generation without incurring either debt or substantial capital cost. All the electricity output from the solar farm will be supplied to Bartow under a 25-year fixed price contract. This contract will help insulate the city from peaking energy costs and future price increases from traditional fuels used to generate electricity.

Celebrate the Fourth …
Bartow Style!
Bartow’s hometown spirit shines at the annual Fourth of July celebration at Mosaic Park with fireworks, cotton candy and lots of musical entertainment. Each year the Bartow Fourth of July Committee plans an event that is filled with family fun and at the end of the day … fireworks! As usual, the celebration, which will be on Wednesday this
year, kicks off with the Bartow Adult Concert Band’s free patriotic program at 2:30 p.m. at Bartow Civic Center. Opening ceremonies for the Fourth of July celebration are at 4 p.m. and the fun lasts all evening, concluding with fireworks at 9:30 p.m. In between, there’s lots of time for food, carnival fun, live entertainment and catching up with friends and family. Bartow’s unit of the National Guard will return with a display of vehicles and equipment. A moment of reflection for the fallen and the National Anthem will remind us of the meaning of Independence Day. Kiwanis Club Cryin’ Towel Kicks Off Football Season The Bartow Kiwanis Club’s event, the Cryin’ Towel, Thursday, August 2, 2018, 6:00 p.m., kicks off the community football season. The annual event features a “tailgate party”-like reception that includes sausage appetizers and freshly-boiled corn on the cob. “Kickoff” (dinner) starts 7:00 p.m. and features a Texas Cattle Company steak with baked potato and side dish. The program, in which area high school football coaches “cry” about how awful their teams are, begins at 7:30 p.m. Door prizes, a drawing, free beer as well as a cash bar are featured at this fun event. Come hear the “blubbering” coaches and cheer for your favorite teams, all for only $50 per person (must be 21 and older). The event takes place at the Bartow Civic Center. Tickets are available by contacting Frank Johnson at (863) 899-9220. This fundraiser benefits the many Kiwanis Club charitable projects.
