Cathy Parker realized she wanted to be an accountant before she finished high school. She was born and raised in Bartow, Florida, and on December 10, 1972, while still in

high school, she began what would be her life-long career in accounting; with the firm of Johnson & Jennings, CPAs, in Bartow.

Graduating from Bartow High School in 1974, Cathy went on to study at Polk State College; but she already knew what she wanted to do. It was not long after starting with the firm that she was hooked; and she knew she wanted to stay and pursue a career in the accounting field.

She never looked back.

Johnson & Jennings, CPAs amicably split, and Parker continued to work for Richard Johnson until his death in 2000.

It was a very sad time, she said, as Johnson was not only her boss for 28 years, but her mentor and friend.

Parker had several offers from other firms, but was encouraged by former boss, Tom Jennings, and some others to open her own accounting firm. She was able to carry on.

After opening her office in June of 2000, Parker knew it was time to start studying for the very difficult EA exam. Finally, in 2005, she spent two days taking the exam and was informed about a month later that she had passed two portions. While continuing to study to retake the test, the IRS made format and administration changes to the exam that forced her to retake the entire test. In 2006, Parker aced the exam and obtained

her license to operate and as an Enrolled Agent, and from then has maintained her membership in the National Society of Accountants.

An individual may become an Enrolled Agent (EA) by passing a grueling, two-day examination given annually by the IRS. The test covers taxation of individuals, partnerships, corporations, estates and trusts, as well as procedure and ethics. Less than one-third of the individuals taking the exam passed, allowing them to apply for enrollment and subjecting themselves to an extensive background check.

An EA provides tax preparation services, audit and collection representation, tax planning and other financial services to both individual taxpayers and business entities. EAs are tested by the IRS on knowledge of tax law and regulations.

As the only tax professionals so tested, they are federally licensed and able to represent clients nationwide. EAs are bound by a code of ethics and professional conduct; and are required to complete annual continuing education program.

Like attorneys and certified public accountants (CPA’s), they are governed by Treasury Departments in their practice before the IRS. In other words, you have to know your stuff to be an Enrolled Agent.

“We endeavor to end the cycle of poverty in the neighborhoods where we work,” shares Megan Graffam, co-founder of Hope Project International. “Through partnerships, such as the one we have with Ruthelise Anderson of Cruise Planners in Lakeland, we have been able to build 39 homes for families in need, deliver more than 2,400 pounds of aid, provide more than 40,000 meals for hungry children and send more than 100 children to school. We also build homes for families in need in Cristo Rey, Nicaragua, providing the funding and manpower to build, the building materials, and appropriate beds for each home.

arrangements and sufficient food has on the lives of the families that receive each home is life changing. We can build a home for a family in need for just $1000.”

Hope Project International also provides more than 3,000 meals a month for children in need in two separate feeding programs in Nicaragua. The programs are the only source of reliable food source for most of participating children. Pure filtered drinking water is used to prepare the food and provide clean water for these children on a daily basis. The programs currently operate for $750 per month.

And how about education? Hope Project International provides the funding to send children to school in Nicaragua. For only $45, each child that is funded for school receives a uniform, shoes and a backpack full of supplies for the year.

Although most of the work is currently focused in the country of Nicaragua, Hope Project has plans to expand to other areas of the world. They have a strong desire to have more of an impact on our local communities, right here in Polk County. Over the past three years, the program has sponsored an Easter event for economically challenged children in Bartow, provided office equipment to Wahneta Elementary School to help serve the 530+ students and faculty and provided volunteers and clothing donations to the Dream Center of Lakeland, working with at-risk children and youth in Lakeland’s inner city.

Santa On Hand at

Magic on Main

Gather the kids and get ready to see Bartow light up on Friday, November 18, 2016, during the Magic on Main/ Friday Fest event, downtown Bartow, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

At 7:00 p.m. a live band will take a break and the blessing of the City will follow. It was confirmed today that Santa will be on hand to make sure there is enough Christmas Joy to illuminate the City of Bartow for the holiday season.

Children are asked to come help Santa bolster Bartow’s Christmas Spirit of the season during the Magic on Main event, and light up the city.

Bartow’s Christmas Parade is December 9 Entrees are being accepted to participate in Main Street Bartow’s 2016 “Magical Illumination” Christmas Parade on Friday, December 9 at 6:00 p.m.

The parade will begin at Mosaic Park north of the Bartow Civic Center, go north on Broadway Avenue to Main Street, then east to First Avenue, where it will end. Trophies will be awarded for the best floats in six categories: Best School, Church, Government, Business, Non-Profit Adult, and NonProfit Youth, as well as trophies for Best Decorated Car and Best Marching Unit. A nominal entry fee of $20.00 is being charged (no charge for nonprofits). For a $250.00 sponsor fee, the entrant will have prime placement towards the beginning of the parade and receive extra publicity.

Entertainment will be featured for a pre-parade dance party. Following the parade, and Santa will be on hand to visit with the children. Vendors will serve food beginning at 5:00 p.m. in the vicinity of the Polk County History Center, and the downtown restaurants will also be open.

Entrants in the parade are required to have lights on their floats, and no live Santas are allowed, as the real one has already accepted the invitation to attend. As a safety measure, no throwing of candy from the floats will be allowed. Walkers may hand out candy.

Bartow Honors Two on MLK Day Americans honor the life and accomplishments of civil rights hero Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., on a special day each January. In Bartow another African American leader shares the spotlight and a monument at Carver Recreation Center.

On Martin Luther King Day in Bartow two men are honored when the Bartow Deacons & Stewards Alliance presents the annual King-Gause Parade and carnival. George H. Gause was Bartow’s first black city commissioner and mayor, and was the first African American to serve on the Polk County School Board. He also was a businessman and actively involved in the community.

Memories and legacies of both King and Gause will be celebrated in Bartow on Jan. 7, 15 and 16, 2017.

On Jan. 7, the 2017 Herbert Dixon Charity Golf Tournament will take place at the Bartow Golf Course, sponsored by Bartow Deacons and Stewarts Alliance, Inc. The tournament features a 4-man scramble. Tee off time is 8:30 a.m. Golfers will be provided lunch at noon. For more information, contact Carver Young at (863) 533-1207.

A memorial service with guest speaker will be on Sunday, Jan. 15, with the parade on Monday, Jan. 16.

The Historic L. B. Brown House was built in 1892 by Lawrence B. Brown, who was born into slavery in 1856. The construction date of this beautiful little mansion is closely tied to the history of Bartow. Included in the house are several personal artifacts, along with excerpts from Mr. Brown business diary. Lawrence Brown was a self-taught master carpenter and entrepreneur. He became one of the area’s most prominent businessmen, and was named as a “Great Floridian.” The house is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Jeepin’ with Judd Comes to Bartow February 17 Jeepin’ With Judd is a family-friendly Jeep only event to be held on February 17-19, 2017.

Jeepin’ With Judd takes place at Clear Springs Ranch in Bartow, and plans are there will be more than 1000 Jeeps participating in 2017. Main Street Bartow plans to provide a Jumpin’ Jeep party for the community and Jeepin’ participants on Friday, February 17, which will include a live band and other family-friendly entertainment.

The public is invited to join Sheriff Judd, PCSO members, sponsors and vendors at this charity event - all proceeds raised will go to Polk Sheriff’s

Charities, Inc., a non-profit organization created to assist family members of agency members who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and which also helped fund the Polk County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Memorial. The memorial, which was dedicated on January 18, 2011, honors those members of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our safety and freedom.
